This group is for AP moms who have one or more high-needs child, and who would like to connect with other moms of HN children for support and advice.
Our focus here will be mainly taken from the following books:
THE FUSSY BABY BOOK by Dr. William Sears
LIVING WITH THE ACTIVE ALERT CHILD by L.S. Budd
RAISING YOUR SPIRITED CHILD (book and workbook) by M.S. Kurcinka
Parenting practices include, but are not limited to:
breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding, babywearing, co-sleeping, and limited mother/child separation in the early years (pre-Kindergarden); co-sleeping and limited separation, among other practices in older children.
Characteristics of a HN child may include:
(for infants) intense, hyperactive, draining, feeds frequently, demanding, awakens frequently, unsatisfied, unpredictable (no natural schedule or rhythm), supersensitive, uncuddly, not a self-soother, extremely seperation sensitive.
For older children, same as above and/or persistent, resists changes in environment or routine (not adaptable), perceptive, easily distractible, extremely energetic, forms strong and lasting first reactions, rapid and strong mood swings, sensitivity to textures (food and clothing), and outward appearance doesn't match internal mood.
This is a list mainly for moms who know that their child does *not* have ADD or ADHD, but it may be suggested by doctors or family often. Our HN children just need MORE and we, as mothers, may find it challenging to meet their needs. One thing to keep in mind is that the traits we find challenging in our children are often the same ones that we admire in other adults!
