Wm Shatner interviews Rush Limbaugh on his hearing loss (radio show excerpt).  Rush has bilateral implants:

SHATNER:  You know, we have something else in common besides passion and cigars and planes and things like that.  I was on the beach one year, walking along the beach, and I thought I heard the hiss of the waves crashing on the -- coming on the sand and then that hiss that the wave makes when it goes back out to sea 'til I realized it was a calm day and there was no hiss.  The hiss was in my head, and it got louder.  And I thought, "This is horrible."  I went looking for help, couldn't find any help, and I became close to suicidal.  I had tinnitus.  I went searching everywhere.  I went to the House Institute, the old man, Dr. House --

RUSH:  John House.

SHATNER:  -- John, and we sat and cried, tears were in our eyes, because he had tinnitus, too, and I had tinnitus, and we were talking about never hearing a quiet night again.  Then I thought about you.  One day you can't hear.  What was going on in your head?

RUSH:  Well, it first started out without fear because I just started losing my hearing in my left ear first.  So I went to a doctor, ear, nose, and throat, took my history, and said, "Ah, you got hearing loss in your family.  Not total deafness, but you've got hearing loss in your family.  Ah, this is normal.  It's starting a little early for you, but we got it handled."  Every week 10% more would be lost --

SHATNER:  Every week?

RUSH:  Every week I was losing 10% more hearing in this left ear, and then the right ear started soon after that.

SHATNER:  Did you have a ringing at all?

RUSH:  Yeah, I've got tinnitus in both ears --

SHATNER:  How bad?

RUSH:  It's not constant.  It comes and goes.  The tinnitus in my right ear, when it's bad, I think I'm listening to a bunch of monks doing a Gregorian chant, and it's as clear as a bell.  The tinnitus in this ear, which the inner ear has been removed for my cochlear implant, is just a low hum, which has the effect of making people sound like this.  It takes all the highs out and adds a bunch of bass.  But that, again, it's cyclical.  I don't have any of that right now in either ear.  I'm not experiencing it.  It comes and goes.  But the hearing loss, they tried everything to save it. It was an autoimmune attack, autoimmune inner ear disease.  And so they gave me a bunch of chemotherapy drugs to slow down the immune system, and I was getting scared because this is my career, and it's the end of it.  I had never heard of a cochlear implant.  They told me about an implant, how it works, and they were very supportive: "Your career will be saved.  We'll at least be able to get you where you can talk to somebody.  You'll never recognize music that you haven't heard before, and you're going to have difficulty hearing in multi-voice, loud environments.  But you're going to be able to be in contact with your environment.  You're going to hear the waves on the ocean.  It's going to sound like static to you on a radio, but you're going to hear it."  The worst part was I had to wait for a month after I totally became deaf for the surgery because I had an infection, a viral infection.  They couldn't do the surgery while that happened.  So I did my radio show with a court reporter doing stenography on the phone callers for a month, just trying to manage my voice by the memory of the way it felt --

SHATNER:  I was going to say, could you hear yourself?

RUSH:  No, I could not hear myself.

SHATNER:  Wait a minute.  You can only feel this vibrating and --

RUSH:  I could only feel it.

SHATNER:  -- you couldn't hear yourself?

RUSH:  No, a hundred percent totally deaf.  And everybody, it was noticeable.  I was doing my best to speak normally, but they assured me you cannot.

SHATNER:  Were you terrified in the moment you realized you were going to go deaf?

RUSH:  I didn't think so, but the doctors at House told me I was scared to death.  They told me.  One of my character traits, as I perceive myself, is I'm a profound literalist.  What is, is.  And feeling bad about it and getting scared wasn't going to change it.  I'm sure I went through shock, and I'm sure I went through fear 'til I learned about the implant.  Once I learned about the implant, I was strangely confident.  I mean I looked at it as a challenge.

Hi Ruth:

Thank you for posting this. A friend sent me this article in the mail and I got it yesterday. It’s a great one. First of all this woman is BRILLIANT: “I didn't care that much until I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine with a degree in medical genetics. In addition to being deaf, at 13 years old I was much younger than my fellow students and I felt isolated. I did not feel like a complete person.”

Rehabilitation for CI surgery for those born profoundly deaf is such a long-term commitment. Their brain has no history of sound to build on! Most of us who were born with good hearing and went deaf just have no idea of all the work involved. This article helps explain some of those issue.

I highly recommend reading it. Thanks! Alicia

Dr. Luxford at HEI is mentioned, and there's several interesting sidebar articles about CIs as well.  For those who might want to see an actual newspaper, it's on page L1 in the Health L.A. Life section. I can bring it to the holiday party for those who want to read it in entirety.

Greetings to all on this post Thanksgiving weekend:

I was recently contacted by Han Li, a student in the UCLA Business School,
about a project she and some other students are working on. Someone has
invented some eyeglasses to wear in a movie theatre that allows the person
to see captioning (similar to the concept of 3-D glasses); people who don't
wear the glasses don't see the captioning. The students want to conduct some
focus groups with deaf and hard-of-hearing people to get an idea of what
they think of this new technology.

I am writing to present an exciting opportunity to participate in our focus
group. We are graduate students at the UCLA business school working on a
technology that provides a new and innovative way to display captioning in
movie theaters, which we believe will create an enhanced movie-going
experience for diverse audiences.

The purpose of the focus group is to experience the technology and give us
feedback. The focus group will include a brief presentation, a survey and a
Q&A session and last approximately 2 hours. Light refreshments will be
provided and randomly selected participants will receive a prize at the end.

We would greatly appreciate your help and participation in our focus group.

I know everyone is getting ready for Thanksgiving but I wanted to make sure don't forget ut our next fun event,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the HLA-LA Annual Holiday Party on December 12th, from 6-10pm.

This year Grace Tiessen has graciously offered to open her home to us and will be providing the main course for our wonderful dinner. The address is 714 Prospect Blvd, Pasadena....right up the hill from the Rose Bowl.  Here's the Mapquest link:

We are asking everyone to contribute with either an appetizer or dessert.  The chapter will be providing the drinks including some beer and wine but you are welcome to bring your own too if you'd like.  In addition, we are asking all guests to share their good fortune by bringing canned food items that will be donated to the local food pantry.

What Holiday Party would be complete without our White Elephant Gift Exchange?  Hilarity always ensues as we share our treasured items!!  Start going through the closets, garage and attic and finally get rid of that "Whatjamacallit" that Aunt Rose gave you (you can tell her that you unfortunately dropped it) and give it a new home.  Bring your item wrapped in something Eco-friendly like a paper bag or Sunday Funnies and be 100% Green.

If you didn't sign up at our meeting last Saturday, please let me know by December 5th if you plan to attend so we can give Grace a head-count. You don't want to miss the fun!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and see you on December 12th!

Pat

Dear HLAA Chapter coordinators,

My name is Julie Verhoff and I am a research audiologist in the Communication Neuroscience laboratory at the House Ear Institute. I was wondering if you would be willing to pass along our information to your members.

We are searching for adult cochlear implant users between the ages of 18 and 55 who were either born deaf or lost their hearing before the age of four. We would like to invite these individuals to participate in a research study that is investigating whether short-term word training can improve speech recognition performance. Attached is a flyer with a brief description of the individuals that we are searching for to participate in our training experiment.

Participants will be asked to complete a few screening tests (e.g., vision, hearing, lipreading, vocabulary, handedness, and non-verbal ability) prior to the first training session. Participation in this experiment requires approximately five hours and is divided between two separate days. The screening tests and training sessions are administered at our facility in the House Ear Institute. Arrangements can be made to complete the screening and testing during the week, on the weekends, and in the evenings. Compensation for the study is $12 per hour and reimbursement for gas ($0.55 per mile) to and from your home address. The training involves watching a visual presentation on a video monitor, and/or listening to speech sounds while responding to the stimuli using a computer mouse.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best Regards,

Dr. Verhoff

Thank you for sharing this Georgia.  Marlee certainly articulated what so many of us have experienced.  It's also nice to know that HLAA National represented us at the same FCC Hearing.
Hopefully we'll seem some progress in the "fight" to ensure that captioning is available on the Internet.

Greetings,

I thought this was important to pass along.  Santa Monica had a police officer come speak to the group, but he learned more from us, than we did from him.  You can get a visor card (or create one of your own)…. Also a good thing for the Hearing Loss 101 Survival kit that we have all been talking about.

Those of you with law enforcement officers in your family should also pass this along.

Dear Leaders,

Thirty years ago this month the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) was founded to bring attention to hearing loss.

At that time many people were skeptical that people with hearing loss could organize, since we were dispersed among the general population, in all walks of life, different socio-economic situations, and little in common but our hearing loss. What we had in common were communication needs that were not understood or taken into consideration at the policy level or even at home in the family environment. We were alone seeking help in coping with the daily challenges of hearing loss.

Fast Forward to 2009 – HLAA’s 30th Anniversary

Have we proved the skeptics wrong who said that people with hearing loss could not organize to effect change? Yes, we have! HLAA has pushed for laws allowing people with hearing loss to fully participate in society, our successes now require:

* Landline and cell phone to be compatible with hearing aids and cochlear implants.
* Television programs are captioned,
* Theaters and other public places must install assistive listening systems, and
* Courtrooms and classrooms must be made accessible.

Our advocacy work has resulted in two major milestones:

* Establishment of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIH), and
* Introduction of assistive listening devices to Americans during the 1981 White House Conference on Aging.

HLAA continues to influence policy for affordable products and services that make our world hearing and communication friendly. And daily, for 30 years, HLAA has helped real people with real problems.

The work of HLAA for 30 years has only been possible because YOU believe in the work we do and support us.

November is an important time for our organization. It is the time that we reflect on our past accomplishments and look forward to the future, and take pride in being the Hearing Loss Association of America. It is also the time when our Chapters from across the country celebrate Founders Day and assist in raising funds for the Chapter Development Office so that is can provide the ongoing support it provides to over 200 Chapters across the country and the new ones that form each month.

With your ongoing support the Chapter Development Office has been successfully able to:

* Launch a Wiki – a comprehensive HLAA website providing leadership support and information materials - http://www.hlaaleaderswiki.org,
* Reintroduce Chapter Development workshops at the HLAA Convention.
* Provided monthly web chats for Chapters.

In 2010 we plan to continue our efforts and:

* Hold a Leadership Training Workshop in Bethesda,
* Expand and improve Chapter/Leadership workshops at the Convention,
* Improve the accessibility of Chapter related monthly web chats.

Together we ask your Chapter to give a gift to HLAA to honor our past, but even more importantly, to ensure our future.

Please give whatever you can so that together we can be a part of a shining future for people with hearing loss. Help keep HLAA vibrant and keep proving the skeptics wrong who said 30 years ago that people with hearing loss can’t organize.

We can and together we are!

Sincerely,

Toni Barrient

Hi Dan,

We are conducting focus groups for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals for the IRS to determine how the IRS could provide better assistance to this population.  We would love to get your help in reaching out to the Los Angeles area deaf and hard of hearing communities.  The focus groups are on Wednesday, November 18, 2009  in Santa Monica.

This is a great opportunity for people to provide their input and feedback to a major government agency.  If possible, please distribute the attached recruitment flyer as broadly as possible so many people become aware of this opportunity.  Feel free to email it, post it, hand out copies, or distribute in any manner that makes sense to you.

We would greatly appreciate your support with this project.  We may follow up with a phone call to see if you have any questions or comments for us, or please feel free to contact me.

Thank you!

-Julia

I realize what we have raised was small potatoes as compared to HLAA-LA. But, every penny helps.

The next time the walk event comes back to Long Beach, we'll be more prepared. We've never done walks or fundraising work before, and we'll be observing all that happens on Sunday.

See you all then.

Dear Dan,
Dear Friends and Family,

I have decided to participate in the Walk4Hearing. Why don't you join my team? The more people the merrier, and the better for the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA). We need people like you on my team.

Participating in an event that raises money for HLAA may touch your life in some way. Think about the ways that hearing loss has impacted you and those around you. The money we raise will go to HLAA at the national and local levels to fund outreach and awareness programs. We need your support, so please do anything you can, join my team, register as an individual or make a donation on my behalf.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the Walk4Hearing event!

Dear Dan,
Dear Friends and Family,

I have decided to participate in the Walk4Hearing. Why don't you join my team? The more people the merrier, and the better for the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA). We need people like you on my team.

Participating in an event that raises money for HLAA may touch your life in some way. Think about the ways that hearing loss has impacted you and those around you. The money we raise will go to HLAA at the national and local levels to fund outreach and awareness programs. We need your support, so please do anything you can, join my team, register as an individual or make a donation on my behalf.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the Walk4Hearing event!

hi,
I think you are doing human trials, at least with children (see the web

Hello Everyone,
HLAA is very excited about the upcoming Long Beach Walk4Hearing on Sunday, November 8th at Long Beach Marina. This is the last Walk4Hearing for 2009, but certainly not the least. We know that November 8th, will be a terrific day, enjoyed by everyone including individuals with hearing loss, families, friends, co workers and caring professionals.
Now go check www.walk4hearing.org. As of right now, you have $13,272 which is great. Let's aim to hit the $15,000 mark really soon. How can you do that? By sending out blast emails and doing a personal letter writing campaign to family and friends to sponsor you. The more you let people about about your walking and raising money for an important cause, the more you're raising awareness about people with hearing loss.
As of today, we have 19 teams registered. If you know anyone that plans to have a team, please encourage him or her to go online and form a team and fundraise for this very important cause. It is important to keep in mind, the more teams we have, the more people we have. The more people we have, the more money we raise and the more awareness about hearing loss we create.
Now go check out the teams that have raised the most money so far:
Los Angeles Stars  $4,283
Hear YA Now  $1,741
Valley Sunshine  $1,208
This is just terrific and keep up the great work. In additon to top teams, we have top walkers that should be recognized:
Nanci Link-Ellis  $1,475
Bernie Marks (actually is on 2 teams)  $1,000
Wendi Washington   $775
Sherry Shuster $658
Keep up the great work! If you have any questions, please free to contact me.

Good Day to all of my SoCA leaders….

Today is October 20th which means the Walk4Hearing clock is winding down – we are 19 days away from the Long Beach Marina event!  In the meantime, while everyone has been getting excited and building momentum, several of our SoCA members have been garnering some press and getting the word about hearing loss out there:

The Long Beach Grunion Gazette did a feature story on Gail Morrison of the HLA Long Beach/Lakewood Chapter that came out last Thursday.  You may view it at www.gazettes.com.  Scroll down on the first page to "Belmont Shore Resident Deals with Hearing Loss" and there she is – terrific!

HLA-LA Chapter member Dana Sunderland was the subject of another article on hearing loss written by her very talented son, Ryan ZumMallen  who is the managing editor of the Long Beach Post complete with our footprint logo next to the article. Oct 13th edition   http://www.lbpost.com/ryan/6886

And last, but certainly not least, our own Rhianon Guitterez of the Orange County Chapter added another award to her repertoire by winning Best Documentary Short for her film, “When I’m Not Alone” at the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival.  You can check it out by going to her website http://www.rhianongfilms.com/When_Im_Not_Alone/HOME.html -

There will be a local screening in LA at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood as part of the Artivist Film Festival December 1 – 5.   I will make sure that Rhi gets the info out to us.

Congratulations to all!   Have some news, awards or events that you’d like everyone to know about?  Just shoot me an email.  I am off to Hawaii tomorrow and back on Monday.  Of course, computer, cell and text (Linkeellis@... ) will all be fired up and working.  Gotta love technology!

Keep those dollars coming.  So far, I’m in the lead for the LA Stars fundraising…J so someone has to beat me.

Have a great day!
