Someone told me that Comcast HD is 480p only, or that there was some
other sort of data limiting used by Comcast to fit it through the
pipe - is this true?

Glad everyone enjoyed themselves, and hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

I can't make it a habit of answering questions about the product, as
it is still in development. The meeting last week was a special
event. ;)

I did want to clarify the 'output' question, as I know it was a bit
confusing at the meeting (sorry about that). As Hong states, the HDMI
and component outs are mutually exclusive...you choose one or the
other, not both.

The composite and S-Video outputs are only available in 480i mode.

Someone pointed out that simultaneous output would be needed in order
to back things up to a standard def vcr. This is supported by using
the remote to switch to 480i mode. In that mode you can have S-Video,
composite, and either HDMI or component outs.

Cheers,

That's totally wrong. Comcast passes on whatever resolution the station is
broadcasting in (1080i or 720p). And from what I've read in this group and on
the AVS, Comcast does not do any compression from their end, where as DirecTV is
known to sometimes "overly" compress their HD channels.

Comcast isn't simply passing through the network feeds, that much is
certain. I don't know where the additional compression is taking place,
but if it's not at Comcast then the affiliate is doing something with
the feed before it gets to Comcast. There is a significant difference
between the network feeds and what I'm seeing on Comcast, even at 720p.

If the upcoming HDTIVO has four tuners but can only use two at a time
what the point in having four? I would at the very lest expect to be
able to use any three at a time:

1. Record dbs
2. Record OTA
3. Watch OTA or dbs

Or did I misunderstand what was said?

There may be some compression being applied but while I watched parts
of a Harry Potter movie on HBO last night it looked and sounded great.
I was especially impressed by the sound as I was curious as to how
well the Comcast box would handle 5.1 material. I wish I could a-b the
Comcast feed with the Directv feed but Directv sends the east coast
feed of HBO-HD while the Comcast is west coast. While watching Alias
it didn't seem the picture was as detailed as it should have been
although on close-ups it was great. It's almost like some of it was
shot in HD and some in scaled SD.

You have an option to set up the DTC5100 to output all non HD as 480p
if you want.
I'm not sure where you got the 480p only. The HD offerings I get are
at 1080i.

You mis-understand. There are two different types of tuners. two for
Directv and two for OTA and you can record two programs at the same time from
any combination of the four tuners. The HDTivo is basically the same as a
regular Tivo except they have added HD capability. They have not added the
capability of recording three channels at once just two like the other
Tivos. If you need to record more than two programs at one time then you
need 2 Tivo units.

There's another point people not familiar with TiVo may not understand. When the
two active tuners are recording, a previously recorded show can also be watched.
It's not being tuned, just being decoded. A virtual third tuner of sorts. It can
be hard to catch up to what's recorded at that rate. ;-) Heck, I have about
10hour waiting for me right now.

My current series 1 becomes slow to respond to commands with this scenario. But
is completely usable.

Comcast gets the exact same signal that is feeding the KGO channel 24
transmitter. They're definitely playing with the feed though, because
they're removing 7.2 (and 7.3 when it's on there).

Then Comcast is doing something negative with the feed before they send
it out. The signal looks worse via Comcast than it does from the local
ABC from Sac. I don't normally watch KGO unless the Sac affiliate is
having problems, but I turned it on last week and it looked fine. The
Comcast version always has some pixelization.....and to my trained eye
it's nearly unwatchable. Those of us who have been watching before
multicasting was a gleam in the network executives eyes aren't going to
like the future PQ.....it seems to constantly be eroding.

We stopped by a retailer last weekend, and they implied that if you get the SD feed for locals from NY or LA, then you will get the HD versions. Is that true?

As I read the FCC and their bylaws, there's a rule
about antennas over a meter in diameter.  The 4228 is
just over that.

I'm in the South Bay, about 40-50 miles from Sutro,
with a cluster of tall buildings (over 10 stories) in
my path to Sutro.

But I'm not just talking about reception.  The last
couple of football games, there were apparently
problems on OTA and yet, it was flawless on Comcast.

No the only premium on D* for me is HBO, which gets me
HBO-HD.  However, I do get Showtime HD on Comcast (for
however long that might be).

The 4 HD channels for $11 a month is a lousy deal, at
least for someone who'd only watch ESPN HD regularly.

Now if they added at least Bravo HD and a couple of
other cable HD channels (whichever those may be), then
I might entertain it.  If they added locals in HD or
at least the national feeds of all the broadcast
networks (including Fox, WB and even UPN), then it
would be a no-brainer.

Both cable and satellite services could be offering
way more HD content and services.  With HD Tivo, D*
will have a leg up.  But although HDTV owners have
taken to OTA, I think it's a bigger bar than people
might realize because people who've been paying for
cable or satellite for many years just aren't in the
mindset of OTA.

D* would have a much more compelling HDTV offering if
they could offer a one-stop service for HD content and
PVR, all though a simple installation.  The way they
do with SD content.  If and when HDTV becomes a bigger
market force, maybe they'll look harder at using the
new bandwidth which is supposedly coming online for HD content.

I'm scheduled for a Comcast tech to "install" my HDTV box next Tuesday.
I'm a little tight on space, and the setup guide makes a big deal about
this box having enough airspace around it, but it doesn't give the box's
dimensions.

Would somebody who has one please measure the height (with feet) and
width and let me know? That way I can be ready when the tech shows up.

I read somewhere that the typical scenerio for delivering HD via
cable is to limit the original stream slightly. Cable uses QAM
streams which has a bandwidth of around 33Mbit/sec(I'm not sure of
the exact numbers but it's around 30Mb/s). The OTA signal can go
upto 19.2Mbit/s. At that rate only one HD OTA stream can fit in a
QAM stream. So to get 2 OTA streams on one QAM stream, they limit
the bandwith to around 15Mbit/s. Supposely, in reality the OTA
stream rarely goes above 15Mb/s.

I can't remember where I say the article but a search of google
should turn it up.

Cheers,
Jason

Mine gets red hot. I have to unplug it to cool it down, which I do when I leave for a day or more  To not loose the guide, I have to leave the cabinets doors open when it is plugged in (although turned "off") all day when everything else is off. Unit really needs a fan, but that would be noisy.  What you really want is the DVR box (DTC-6802). Ask about that with the tech, see if he has seen any? We would love to know.

I wonder if this problem is specific to your area or
your head-end. I have yet to see anything other than
the once in a blue moon bit of pixelization on KGO or
any of the other HD channels provided by comcast (save
for the Green Bay MNF game, which was a local
problem). The exception was a period of about a week
and a half where I had relatively frequent drop-outs -
but that seems to have been corrected.

When you say "red hot" can you clarify that in relative terms? I have
had mine about a week or so and it does not get any warmer than any
other piece of AV equipment. I put a laser temp gun on it and at the
area where the power supply is it reads about 97-98 degrees. Every
other spot has a cooler reading. And I leave mine on 24/7. I think
these boxes are really "on" all the time anyway, when you power it off
I think it just shuts down the front display.

You might have a bad power supply..

Here in Sacramento, you get all HD basic channels with just standard basic
and the HD box rental. The only things you don't get are HBO and
Showtime, which require a sub to their respective packages.

With basic cable at 15.82 in Santa Rosa and 5.00 for the HD I get:

KGO on 184
KNTV on 184
ESPN on 193
SHO on 198
HBO on 197
KQED on 188

And 4 other KQED transmissions in SD. No INHD

How big is your display Tim?  I can detect the most minimal macroblocking.....stuff others who are watching can't see even when I point it out.  Trust me, there is macroblocking on every ABC show via Comcast......stuff I do NOT see via OTA.  Granted, it's not there during static images.....just camera pans and fast motion across the screen.  Monday Night Football is ALWAYS a mess via Comcast.

My unit gets hot....but "red hot"?  My unit is stashed away in an enclosed cabinet, on top of a stack of other equipment....with a CD organizer filled with DVD-A's on top.  I have small wooden blocks holding the CD organizer up, but even with that minimal clearance it doesn't overheat.

I'm thinking you might have a bad unit if it gets that hot.  I just checked mine and it's been off all day (but plugged in) and it's barely warm.

Mine doesn't get hot, either. Sounds like maybe Alan's unit is out of
spec.

There are several information-filled files about this unit at

I get the same in Pleasanton.
I added the first tier of digital for $10 more which added the 2 INHD channels. I wish I didn't do that.
I am afraid if I try to go back to basic plus the $5 HDTV deal I will loose the SHO and HBO.
