Andy invited me to join the group!
I'm located in Morgan Hill, and just starting out.
I've got a 2001 Mits WS65857 and Tosh Pro 6200 DVD,
with the audio going through my home stereo component
sound-surround system. This week I will be adding HD
with a DISH6000 system and OTA antenna for the local
San Francisco HD feeds.
I see that one of my good buddies, R8der(Chris) who has
already been helping me out is here. I'm sure I'll have
lots of questions, and look forward to sharing info and
getting advice from you pros in the Bay Area!

Alright Mark....welcome! I certainly hope the OTA antenna works for
you. Chuck Bernard tried the same antenna I have (Channel Master 7'
parascope) and he couldn't pull in anything from his location...but I
believe he's further south than you are. If you need to get that 7'
parascope antenna, he said he returned it to a store in San Jose....I
can find out for you which store. Good luck!
Chris
This is my first post to this group, so I hope I am doing this correctly.
I bought a mitsubishi sr-hd400 receiver today at Frys. I was very surprised
to see them in stock, as the good guys has a waiting list of 750 people and
the salesman said I could sign up and get it around the end of march. There
were still about six of them left as of Saturday night at the fry's in
Fremont.
Shawn
I think that whoever you talked to at Good Guys might have been misinformed. I
checked the San Jose GG a couple of days ago for the Panasonic, and the guy I
talked to said that they were still backordered for the Panasonic, but he could
get me a Mitsubishi right away.
Also, there were 4 or 5 of the Mitsubishi boxes at the Santa Clara Frys a couple
of days ago.

I finally joined the ranks of the HD-priviledged yesterday!
Got a DISH6000 with OTA module...used a Channelmaster UHF antenna
on a 35' mast, and I'm getting the local SF HD feeds at about
65-75% signal strength from Morgan Hill! KPIX seems to be the
strongest station, then KGO, then KRON, which dropped quite
a bit during last night's Leno show.
I see that there are some 480p broadcasts on FOX....
Do we have a FOX digital affiliate here (KTVU?) And other than
occasional KQED broadcasts, are there any other HD OTA stations
out of SF or San Jose?
Hi Mark,
I'm on the Sunnyvale/Santa Clara border and am getting KPIX/CBS and
KGO/ABC like you with my 6000 and radio shack roof mount antenna, but not
KRON! You are very lucky to be that far south getting KRON!
I am also getting KBHK/UPN on 45, KBWB/WB on 19, and KQED/PBS on 30
Local SJ digital that I get are KNTV 12, and KICU 52
KTVU/FOX is on 56, but for some reason, like KPIX/57, I just can't lock it.
Need a bigger antenna, re-pointing (will try when summer gets here!), or
bigger in-line amp, have 26db gain right now.
Most of my HD watching is HBO HD, some SHO HD, but the OTA card is
definitely a good deal. I watch everything in HD mode, and use the "#" key
for aspect changing, but I also have SD routed to the TV just for comparison
watching in 480p. I have the 56" panasonic that does 720p mode native, as
well as 1080i mode.

Actually, after playing with it for two days now, I don't really
seem to get KRON at an acceptable level. I've tried watching Leno
twice now, and the signal will go from 0 to about 60 for a second or
two, and then drop to zero again, etc.... not enough to hold a
picture, and barely enough to lock the signal. I was thinking about
having the OTA antenna raised from 35 to 40 feet to see if that
helped, but maybe KRON is just a weak station. Does anyone have any
further info, or should I just give up on KRON?

I'm getting those too, and the signals are pretty strong. But some
stations have a picture, and others don't, even with a strong signal.
Is that normal?

I'll try out 56 tonight and see what happens.

I think I have a good antenna with amp and rotor; I just don't know if
it's up high enough. BTW, is there any such thing as being too high?

I have a similar setup, except that I'm going from the 6000 through my
S-VHS VCR. As far as DISH HD programming, I'm disappointed that the
East Coast HBO/SHO feeds are very rarely in HD during normal West
Coast viewing times, and the HD PPV movie hasn't changed and isn't
available. I just found out about the "#" key last night, although
that is still limited....the HD/digital channels will not expand at
all, and my TV's aspect adjustment is inoperable with the DISH in HD
mode. I see that the DISH menu has a new button for changing aspect
ratio to 16:9, but it is not yet functional. When is the next software
update???

Yeah, R8der almost sold me on the Panasonic just for that reason,
but there seemed to be too many little problems with it, so I opted
for the Mits with 1080i.

Mark,
Do you what the model number of your antenna is?
I upgraded antennas from a decent one to an excellent one and it made a
WORLD of difference. Let me know the model number of the antenna as
well as the make/model of your UHF amp.

I have all that info at home, although the professional
installer that helped me said it was the best antenna for HD in my
area, but I don't know how he determined that or the mounting height.
I have a call in to him now to check on all this.
I'll get back to you!
Thanks!

After further checking, I believe I have the ChannelMaster
Model 4248 (UHF Diamond Quantum) with a 0064C(?) amp (and rotor)
affixed to a 35' mast. CM says this has a 45 mile range, but I'm
about 65 miles from Sutro.
After talking with the technician, I figure I have two choices to
try to improve OTA reception: raise the current antenna (I can go up
to 42' high), or upgrade to the CM Para-Scope antenna, model 4251,
which is their deepest fringe model (60+ mile range).
Or....just assume that I currently have the best possible setup for my
location.
Thoughts? Advice?

Wow....like two ships passing in the night. You must have been writing this
when I wrote my reply...;-)
You would definitely benefit from the 4251, as it has better gain than the
4248. I'd also go with a Channel Master mast mounted pre-amp, UHF only,
model #7775. That is my exact setup. Not sure if its too late to have him
switch these out or not....but I do know the 4251 is hard to get a hold of
since UPS won't ship it.
What is interesting about the 4251 in Livermore, is just a very small twitch
of the rotor can make all the difference in channel reception. Don't let
anybody tell you exact antenna postion isn't necessary....because for fringe
areas its very important.

Well, if its not the Channel Master 4251, its not the best. Perhaps he felt
it was not wise to mount the 4251 on a 35' pole....I have mine on a 5 foot
pole and even then it gets some serious swaying during a heavy wind. I'm
willing to bet its the 4248, which is good....but its not the best.

So....you *do* believe I can improve my OTA reception even
further with the upgrade, huh?

I cannot definitively state that it will improve your reception...only
that I think it will. Its more of a deep fringe solution, although the
4248 is still an excellent antenna...and is the choice of most HDTV
enthusiasts.
I have not personally tried the 4248....I've just done a bit of reading
in the newsgroups of those having problems in deep fringe areas...and
the 4251 is what saved several from having to live without HD.

Hi Mark,
Yes, there are some intermittent outages with KNTV and KICU lately. I
think the KNTV ones may be related to a 6000 firmware issue that is to be
resolved in some future SW download. Also, when getting to some stations
you'll have a delay with "generating subchannels" for 30 seconds or so, this
and random 6000 turn-offs when tuning to digital OTA stations are known
issues with DISH and are hoped to be fixed in some future SW download.
KBWB and KBHK seem to have a lot of upconverted material, but KQED (PBS)
weekly and of course the major networks during prime time have a lot of
native 480/720p and 1080i material in 16:9 format.
I'll probably move to an even larger antenna and better pre-amp by
summertime.

Thanks for the info, Chris! I'm still waiting to hear back from
my antenna guy about the 4251, but I think we'd have to build a
whole new mast tower. Otherwise, I'm thinking of just raising the
4248 another 10'. After playing with the reception all weekend, I'm
able to get KPIX, KGO, KTVU(FOX), KQED, KBHK, KBWB, KICU, all at a
range of 65%-80%. The only feed I seem unable to lock in on is KRON.
But on 1/1/2002 NBC moves from KRON to KNTV, which is out of San Jose,
and gives me a 85% signal strength, so I think I'm pretty well set!

Yep, I'm already seeing plenty of that, but I knew to expect these
issues. What's bizarre is the way DISH decides on local digital
channel names and numbers. Plus sometimes it generates 1-2
subchannels, and other times it will generate up to 50 subchannels!
It seems to do this the most with KGO. And after it generates the sub
channels, they disappear from my Favorites list and I have to re-input
them. DISH definitely has some tweaking to do!

Sunday night was full of 480p/720p/1080i programming, from the CBS and
ABC movies and FOX/PBS shows, to the DISH HD HBO/SHO channnels (HBOs
"Sopranos" looked incredible!) I'm finding that the various HD
schedules don't list everything....you just kinda have to surf to see
what's actually on in HD at any given time.

Actually that is a problem with the broadcaster, not the 6000, you will find
that when KGO settles on what they want to be called, so will your 6000. It
used to only happen when KGO was about to go HD that they would ramp up
their ID info as well, but they have been pretty uncoordinated. When they
broadcast Courage Under Fire last week the audio for the half-hour before
was all just the network guys talking and syncing levels and suff, but the
picture was that quizshow. PBS does the same thing when they broadcast HD,
and you just go BACK into your Favorites list and re-check their current
name.
What I am upset about is the lack of a local program guide. I hate tuning
to the local channels only to find NO information where the DirecTV guys get
listings of what they are seeing. It means that I can't record a show just
by clicking on it with the 6000. Irk!
> I'm finding that the various HD
> schedules don't list everything....you just kinda have to surf to see

I recommend TV.excite.com. It takes a little tweaking to get all your
channels the way you see them between your dish network and your broadcast
channels, but it is extremely possible and EVERYTHING that is in HD shows as
being in HD. Unfortunately they don't list things in 480p as such, yet.
Also remember that if you go to:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HDTV-in-SFbay/calendar
I maintain a list of what's on using LOCAL time, unlike the eTown list that
always gives you shows in Eastcoast time. I combine the listings of what
comes from eTown, CBS, PBS, ABC, HBO and confirm many with the Excite guide.
I don't do showtime yet, because I don't subscribe, but if someone else
wanted to take the responsibility it's not that time consuming and I could
show you how. I also have not been totally successful in finding all the
CBS sports that is in HD, usually just on Saturday and Sunday mornings, but
they don't show it anywhere in particular, you just have to surf and see.

Yep, I've been using it for years as part of my Excite Personal Start

Nice job -- Thanks! But since it lacks the DISH HD Showtime

Funny....all the CBS prime-time listings tonight (Monday) do NOT
specify that they are in HD, unless you click on the TV show title.
They were all listed as HD last week.
Is it just my guide, or you are seeing the same thing?

Yes, the CBS guide to HDTV is only from 8 to 11 every night a week in
advance. So outside those times you have to find it elsewhere, like the
Sony page lists the PGA Open, Superbowl.com, etc...
All the guides I use have links to them at:

I guess it depends on the week, they may be trying to save space, I have
noticed however that the 1/2 hour listings don't always have HDTV listed,
but the hour long ones do. What I find even more curious is the LBX
listing, what does that mean? I have only seen it on KTEH which is NOT
digital yet. When you tune it it claims to be about to show you something
widescreen but it's not enhanced in anyway other than having black at the
top and bottom of the screen.

As you know, it most likely means "letterboxed", but if you say it's

Yes, before the superbowl there was some golf on that didn't list there,
infact that list looks the same as it did during this golf game I saw.

With most of the HD programming being on CBS, I'm tending

Oh, My, Gawd
I had seen this before, but I have NEVER seen this like it is going

only true on the Dish 6000 or are other people seeing this?
Sorry for my earlier post saying this is normal, I have only seen it

With my DISH6000, KGO is the only channel out of all the local digital
channels that does this. I have to reset it every single time I invoke
it -- and it disappears from my Favorites list after each subchannel
generation. I've also noticed that sometimes it will generate a 7/7
identifier, and other times it will generate 24/7-KGO, which seems
to be the correct one. In either case, I still get a picture.
I have the same exact problem Randy describes below.

After complaining about it since I got my HDTV KBWB has finally
decided to go to a normal aspect ratio, they had been stretching the
image to the full 16x9, perhaps zooming a little, but everyone was
quite fat. Or voluptous if you are watching the Nikki show.
But I just tuned into the news and everyone looks GREAT!
Thanks KBWB!
