  From HDTV Magazine:

WASHINGTON-January 31, 2007-The majority of U.S. households that receive
their television signals over the air are still unaware of the digital
TV transition even though an estimated 22 million over-the-air homes
need to make some kind of digital decision by February 17, 2009,
according to a Association of Public Television Stations (APTS) survey.

The bulk of the survey participants-61 percent-had no idea that the DTV
transition was taking place. Ten percent said they had limited
awareness, while 25 percent said they were somewhat aware or very aware.
While some respondents were aware of the digital transition, 53 percent
had no idea when analog transmissions were scheduled to be turned off.

You're probably too far for an indoor antenna. I'm in south San Jose and
tried a Zenith Silver Sensor on the second floor and still had absolutely
no luck picking up anything.

Your point is valid and I'll also mention that the HD LIL from
DirecTV is a further transcoding of the MPEG2 ATSC signal to MPEG4.
There was wishful thinking that they could have re-coded the 45MB/s
signal from the network to MPEG4 but I think the logistics of doing
that and inserting local content (i.e. advertising) was not
practical.

I’m always happy to have a new HD channel, but does A&E HD have anything to offer other than reruns of cancelled network TV shows, and 5 year old episodes of American Justice?

I guess there was a reason I stopped watching A&E a while ago.  Not really a whole lot of content on there.

If your Tivo still has Lifetime service, it has value. Any Tivo
without Lifetime is worthless on the used market.

Tivo no longer offers Lifetime service for newly purchased units.
However, they do allow you to transfer Lifetime from an old unit to a
new Series 3 HD unit for a $199 fee. The old unit gets 1 year free
service.

There, I managed to make the thread on-topic again.

They extended the Lifetime transfer offer, but I'm not sure how long.

I should better qualify the statement I made earlier. Any *Series 1
or 2* Tivo without Lifetime is worthless on the used market. The
Series 3 HD units are rather expensive, and are not subsidized by Tivo
the way current Series 2 units are. You can basically get a new
Series 2 for free from Tivo at this point.

I went with Astound which actually has more channels than D*. No way I'm giving
them a 2 year commitment.

The comcast program guide shows survivor as being in HD (for the first
time ever). I'm not sure if the promos were HD, but they were 16:9.

However tonight's episode, at least on comcast channel 705(KPIXHD), is
4:3 SD, stereo.

Is anyone seeing an HD version OTA, via satellite, or from another
network affiliate? Does anyone know if this season was even shot in
HD? Is the marketing false, or did someone forget to "flip the switch"
when they broadcast it?
