Ah, a fellow tinkerer. Best of luck and remember, it's not the finished
product, it's the process of creating that is fun.

Phil,
The case will (if needed) be machined after full weld.
I will do a full measure of it when I have welded some more.
The goal is to use as little out of garage help as possible,
and of course as little dollars as possible.
This engine will never be put in an aeroplane.
If it stays together longer than 15min running time,
I will consider putting it in a bike frame.
The engine will use 1600VW cylinders, pistons and heads, I have already got all
the VW parts needed, and sawed a couple of heads apart. So far I have spent $30
on parts...

Joakim,
This looks really interesting. If this is the final crankcase and
not just a mock-up, I wonder if the final machining should be done AFTER
the full weld? What can you tell us about this project?

The nature of a "Master Rod" Radial is that each piston "sees" a
different crank center and thus a different deck height.

The variation in deck height is fixed by the master-rod/link-rod geometry.  There are several ways to accomplish this compensation, but this seemed to be the simplest of them.

I thought about them but I don't believe there are enough fins (cooling surface)
around the exhaust port. They probably work OK in a drag bug with forced air
cooling but I would not trust them to live for very long in an airplane.

Hi all
Yes would probably work fine but the diamiter of the engine would be increase more than i would like. Side valve engines work just fine.

I haven't purchased plans yet so I can't look up dimensional conflicts or required modifications.

J,
Your situation is no different than all of ours and for that matter
Jack's as well. But if you are serious about such a large undertaking,
the information in the plans will be invaluable. Under the best of
circumstances, you will be at it for years. Amortizing the cost of the
plans over that time makes it seem like a deal. I have been collecting
information about radials for years and have yet to collect a tenth of

I am considering the 7cyl. plans, but to be honest...
my engine is turning out to be a bit different than the HCI.
I am planning on putting it in a bike frame, kinda like the 'jesse james' radial
hell bike, wich has a rotec 7cyl. engine.

The axle dimension question was a 'quickie', due to the fact that I stumbled
over a 69mm stroke crank on a swap... (hirth), but I guess the
axles on the hirth are just too weak (25mm).

My engine will have the cam in front of the engine, and 'power outlet' on the
rear, along with pumps, starter and distr.

It will also be built on a very small budget, and with most work done by me or
my close friends.

The housing will be welded up of aluminium 13mm thick plates.

Best regards, Jocke

You gave joakim good advise Phil. This is not a good place for guesswork.
Makeing some progress on my 180. Looking to scrounge up a nice round chunk of
4130 for the alternate one piece crankshaft. Could be a bit of a challenge.

Jason, keep trying, you will succeed.
Any doubts I may have had went away once I got time to look over the plans.
I have plans for the 180 and they are good enough for me with zero experience to figure it out.

Jack is often heard here. I keep hearing this complaint and don't

Jack! You got your ears on?

In any case, at the price of the plans and with the level of knowledge
it took to build them, if Missouri fell into the fault line tomorrow,
you would be money ahead.

We used a titanium-sputter process for the Ford engine.  It was a secret process, and we were never to know the outcome.

A second advantage is clearance (expansion room) which would make a tighter engine.  Soo... let us know how you like them!

How much?
