This is one of those production practices that is a fairly well guarded secret so you may have issues finding journal literature. WSU and OSU put out a few publications but not much. In general the plant will want 90% of its nitrogen in about a 6-8 week window. Adding nitrogen after flowering will not improve flower size or yield. Volume depends on soil type and plant age. But I can tell you that most of the N in milorganite is not readily available and will require modification in the soil before the plant can use it. This takes weeks to months...
Hops on use Nitrate (NO3-) nitrogen whereas most of the nitrogen in milorganite is Ammonium (NH4+). See the latest issue of our newsletter "All Hopped Up" on our website for more information on feeding and watering. There is an article in the June issue called "Are You Starving Your Plants?"

Subject: [Grow-Hops] Fertilizer schedule
Can anyone cite an authority on the best times in the
flowering cycle to feed, or withold, fertilizer? I've been
feeding a handful of Milorganite to each hill, every 3 - 4
weeks, and I wonder if there's a more economical and
effective schedule, particularly with reference to the times
of forming laterals and setting burrs.
