> Dear PJ, I have had your e-mail on my computer for a long time. I have many which I have not answered.  I love to talk about the Griggs, and it takes time for me to answer them all.  My husband's mother's maiden name is Griggs.  His line of Griggs were from Davisburg, MI.  His Griggs line starts in England with a George Griggs 1609, which is the grandfather of the Griggs' brothers who settled Griggstown, NJ. Their father is John Griggs born 1635 in England.   They came to Gravesend, Long Island, NY.  Those four brothers, Samuel, Daniel, Benjamin and Thomas did not all stay in Griggstown.  Daniel is our direct line - he lived in Newton, NJ.  We have taken a few trips to NJ and MI to look up our ancestors whereabouts.  It has been a real thrill for us to find their tombstones, and know the vicinities where they lived.  To look in phonebooks - calling all the Griggs' names, inquiring if they are related to the same lines we are-I have looked on the white pages on the internet in the towns where we think they might've lived and then I start calling them at 6AM (CA time - back there it is 9AM) - I tell them they don't know me and we don't know them, but would they be interested in talking to me about genealogy - I have looked on the LDS Family Search.org- I have joined the onelist.com griggs' list - which I see you did - I have met people on the internet - I will give you a few of their addresses.  It is a facisnating hobby.  One that needs patience.  I'm not sure your line is the same as ours, but please contact John Griggs - griggsj@... - he has tons of information on the griggs.  Karnak.com is another good web page, because they do the research free for you.  Ancestors.com isn't as good because you have to pay to get into some of their sites.  Worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com is good.  USgenweb.com is also good. There you type in your state and they have cemetery lists, by each county there are things you can look up and also volunteers in the counties who will do research for you or answer your questions, or direct you to someone who might be able to help you.  Good luck.  Keep me posted if you find anything.  I am sorry it has taken me so long to answer you. Dear Friends,

The plural of Griggs is Griggses, just as the plural of glass is glasses. Ths is especially important to avoid confusion with the name Grigg, of which the plural is Griggs.

Debbie,

You need to include dates or approximate dates of birth, death, marriage,
etc. Who did your grandfather and great grandfather marry, include their
maiden names if you know them. Where in SC did they live. Did your
grandfather have any siblings, if so include their names. Since names are
frequently passed from one generation to the next, this can also help
identify the family. In other words include as much info as you know, in
order for others to be able to identify them and help you.

My Great Grandfather died I believe in 1985 or 1986.
I only knew my great grandmother by great mawmaw. She
died when I was real young. My grandfather married
Elizabeth Sparrow. He had a sister Peggy who married
a Morris she died in 1989, and two brothers Frank and
AJ. Frank died this past March. That is all the
information I really know. I do know that my dads
cousin Monnie died when she was 16 in a car accident.
She broke her neck. They are from Hartsville, SC.
Sorry I did not include this, it is my first time
trying to find out information.

I don't know when your Griggs settled in SC, but Griggs and Sparrow are very
old names in southeastern VA and northeastern NC. The first thing you need
to do is check the census for your area and see if your grandfather or great
grandfather is listed. Keep going back to each successive census to find
who their parents were, who their children were, where they were born. When
you are first starting with so many unknowns as you have the census is the
best place to start. Also write to the state and request the birth and
death certificates for each of your ancestors. That will give you a wealth
of information. There will be a fee for each document you request. Check
the courthouse in the county where they resided for wills, land records,
etc. Most people in the courthouse will be helpful.

Good luck,

Jean

Doris,

I am NOT the list manager, just another member of the list. I have just
received six messages from you to the list trying to unsubscribe. It is
very simple if you go onelist.com and click on "help" in the upper right
hand corner and "read" the directions to unsubscribe. Since you seem unable
to do that, I have copied them for you and pasted to this message:

How do I unsubscribe from a group?
       To unsubscribe on the Web:
1.. Sign in to Yahoo! Groups and go to the My Groups page.
2.. Click on the Edit Message Settings link at the top of the page.
3.. Look for the group you wish to unsubscribe from, and select
Unsubscribe from the pull-down list on the right.
4.. Click Update to save your changes. The group will no longer be
listed on the My Groups page, and you will no longer receive messages.
       To unsubscribe via email:
From your email program, send a blank message to:

       groupname-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

Make sure to replace "groupname" with the actual name of the group
(e.g., pastry_chefs-subscribe@yahoogroups.com).

Hi-
I started our family tree many years ago, but have hit many road blocks on
my father's side--the Griggses. I thought maybe I would turn to your group
and see if I can find some missing pieces.

My name is Jennifer (Griggs) Hocker. I live in Indiana. My father came from
a family of 14 brothers and sisters, most of whom live in this area. His
father and mother (Aubrey Wetzel Griggs and Margeurite Townsend) come from
Kentucky. We know names of some of my grandfather's brothers and sisters,
but there aren't very many still alive who know more than that.

Does anyone know where I might go from here or are there any ties any of you
have to Griggs from Kentucky? I know they were in NC? perhaps before
Kentucky? The furthest back I have gotten in the early 1800's.

sigh.

Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jennifer
