1.
Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents
will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is
all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never
blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
18.. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to
you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an
answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save
it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
25. Frame every so-called disaster with these words ''In five years, will this
matter?"
26. Always choose life.
27. Forgive everyone everything.
28. What other people think of you is none of your business.
29. Time heals almost everything. Give time, time.
30. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
31. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
32. Believe in miracles.
33. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or
didn't do.
34. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
35. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.
36. Your children get only one childhood.
37. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
38. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
39. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab
ours back.
40. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
41. The best is yet to come.
42. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
43. Yield.
44. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.
It's
estimated 93% won't forward this. If you are one of the 7% who will, forward
this with the title '7%'. I'm in the 7%. Remember that I will always share my

My apologies for the late notice. The change of the Board and abrupt changes of
personnel have led to unanticipated goofs, for which I am entirely at fault.
That said, we have a terrific meeting planned with Tina Scherr of Pure Water San
Diego presenting. Here's her intro:
We are and environmentally friendly drinking water solution provider in the
business to business realm. Some of our nationwide customers include Ross Dress
for Less, Nike, and 200 of the fortune 500 companies. We essentially help
companies decrease their carbon footprint by eliminating bottled water through
providing them with the best quality, most technologically advanced water
purification system on the market.
We essentially help companies go green by eliminating the need for bottled water
and reducing the use of all the other resources required to provide it.
In the presentation I'll also be talking about the environmental and health
effects of drinking from plastic bottles. Give some examples of decreasing
clients carbon footprint, cost savings. Also will be explaining the advanced
sustainable technology of our systems….
See you there!

Are there any eco-friendly Christmas trees available in our area? Or an
alternative of some sort to keep the holiday spirit going, w/o leaving a big

The Obama administration must take a stronger position
in Copenhagen to rein in global warming pollution. Click here to take action.
For
the next two weeks, representatives from 192 countries including more
than 100 heads of state, along with non-profit and governmental
organizations, will work to move forward the United Nation's Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)—a comprehensive international
agreement to drive down global warming pollution and help avoid the
worst effects of climate change.
The Union of
Concerned Scientists has a critical role to play at this meeting. As
decisions about how to reduce global warming pollution are being made,
UCS experts will be there to ensure the final agreement includes
innovative, practical solutions that are based on the best available
science.
President Obama will be going to Copenhagen later in the
meeting to present the U.S. position and to be there in person with
other world leaders to seal the deal. Early reports indicate that he
will announce that by 2020, the United States will reduce our global
warming emissions in the range of 17 percent below 2005 levels. This is not enough.
While this is similar to the emissions reduction target in the climate
and energy bill passed by the House of Representatives in June, the
Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved a higher, 20
percent reduction target in November. President Obama should announce that he will
work to ensure any climate and energy legislation passed by the United
States includes the stronger, 20 percent emissions reduction target.
In addition the president should also push for strong international
policies to reduce tropical deforestation, which currently accounts for
about 15 percent of global heat-trapping emissions.
To achieve the
ambitious, scientifically-accurate, and binding climate agreement that
the world needs, the United States must make a stronger commitment to
reducing global warming pollution.

Greetings Green Business supporters-
The Monthly SDGBN General mebership meeting will be held this Wednesday,
November 18th at 8:00am at the city's Ridgehaven building in Kearney Mesa
(Details below).
This month we are excited to introduce a new format that will include breakaway
roundtable groups. In lieu of member presentations, members will organize into
small groups based on categories determined by attendee preferences. Within
these groups, members will be able to network in a more personal venue and
approach targeted markets and industries with a more focused eye.
The idea behind this approach is to allow groups of members to benefit from each
others' ideas with greater accuracy by allowing members to better focus their
networking efforts.
It's a new format for us and we're sure that attendees will find it beneficial.
Focusing networking efforts more deliberately and accurately is the name of the
game. We hope to see you there!

Here is a Webinar on risk management in farming. Some of you may have an
interest. I am not certain if the speakers will address sustainable farming, a
hot topic with our group. Should be an interesting presentation. Jim Hance
Reminder: The next webinar is Wednesday, November 11 at 9 am, pacific time.
Please see the yellow highlighted area (below) for more details about
Wednesday’s meeting.
Ag In Uncertain Times, http://www.farmmanagement.org/aginuncertaintimes, helping
producers and others meet the challenge…

The November Ag in Uncertain Times webinar series focuses on Operating in Risky
Environments.
Schedule
All webinars are scheduled to begin at:
12:00 Eastern/11:00 Central/10:00 Moutain/9:00 Pacific
Operating in Risky Environments
November 4 â€" Where Are We? 90 minutes
*Gary Brester, Montana State University, will discuss some of the factors
creating the very risky environment many agricultural producers are facing and
provide insights on thinking about strategies to deal with the volatility in
day-to-day operational decisions.
*John Hewlett, University of Wyoming, will discuss “Strategic Risk Management
in Agriculture,” a strategic planning approach to organize the process of risk
management. This approach provides an ideal platform for organizing risk and
risk management concepts. The Strategic Risk Management (SRM) process covers
strategic, tactical and operational needs, decision-making processes and
prediction and probability of outcomes. This 10 step program for strategically
managing the five sources of risk includes the tools and worksheets necessary
for implementation in today’s increasingly risky environment. The SRM process
covered is accompanied by a web site and over forty tools to help implement the
SRM process. These tools will be covered during the November 18th webinar.
November 11 â€" Where Do We Want to Go? 90 minutes
*Duane Griffith, John Hewlett and Jay Parsons will present “Risk Navigator”
a set of tools providing the necessary equipment to begin implementing the
Strategic Risk Management (SRM) process presented in the November 4th webinar.
Each of the 10 steps in the SRM process is designed to help producers manage
the five sources of risk faced by every agricultural operation. The process is
cyclical and provides feedback and opportunities for re-evaluation as conditions
change. The first three steps involve understanding the operator’s ability and
preference for setting risk management goals. This tolerance for risk depends on
their financial health and personal preferences. Available tools will be
discussed that help producers through each of these steps. The middle steps are
tactical, which include identifying risks and the outcomes for various
management actions, determining the likelihood of each outcome and making an
informed decision about how to manage any risks. The operational stage assures
that what gets implemented is actually evaluated and reconsidered and that
course corrections are made as necessary as the process unfolds. Available tools
for these steps will also be briefly reviewed.
November 18 â€" How Do We Get There? 90 minutes
*Risk Management Resources for each region of US agriculture will be presented,
with a panel on how to access these resources.
Pulling It All Together: Managing Ag Enterprises in Uncertain Times
December 2 and 9, 2009
*The December 2 presentation will pull together the messages the Webinar series
has presented, how has the economic environment changed in the past six months,
focusing on the help that is out there to help farm and ranch families deal with
farming in uncertain times.
*The December 9 and 10 webinars will focus on the internet and other tools, that
are available to assist agricultural professionals working with farm and ranch
families, as they manage the many issues created by these very challenging
agricultural economic environment.

And of course, there's info about our members who attended, as well as guests, so check out the notes when you get a chance.

Feel free to start one thought. That would be nice. A front loader moves food waste in the Organics Annex, the headquarters of San Francisco's food waste operation.

Tossing food scraps in your garbage can is now legally considered a crime --- at least in San Francisco.
A brand-new city law requires residents to discard food waste in a separate bin.
It's the first program
of its kind in the nation, and so far, it's a mandate San Franciscans
seem to relish. In fact, many residents and landlords began
implementing the law before it took effect, using their city-provided
food recycling bins to separate waste.
Cutting Down On (Stinky) Refuse
After enforcing a food
waste rule, the garbage room in the basement of the Cathedral Hill
Plaza apartments in San Francisco is longer a malodorous sty.
"It doesn't smell so bad," says Linda Corso, the apartment manager. "Our trash room doesn't stink like it used to."
That's because none of the wet garbage, the food waste, goes down there anymore, Corso says. Instead, food scraps go into sealed compost bins that get picked up by the city. Corso says the program has significantly trimmed the building's garbage costs.
"We used to have two bins picked up every day," she says. "Now we're down to one bin every day. So we've cut that in half."
Garbage officials in the city have been stunned and heartened by the tons and tons of food waste that is already streaming in.
After picking up
curbside food scraps, garbage trucks head to the south of the city to
the Organics Annex, the heart of the citywide food waste operation.
Jared Blumenfeld, the city's environmental officer, says the Organic Annex is already processing about half of the city's food waste, which is more than 500 tons per day.
"You can see a lot of
lettuce, tomatoes, old apples, rotten cabbages," Blumenfeld says. "You
get a kind of vivid picture here of what's being thrown away."
Composting your food scraps is probably the single most effective thing you can do as a citizen in the United States today.
- Jared Blumenfeld, city environmental officer for San Francisco
San Francisco turns all of that food refuse into compost, which is then sold to Bay Area farms and vineyards. The program is the latest effort in one of the most aggressive recycling campaigns in the nation. San
Francisco currently keeps 72 percent of its garbage stream out of the
landfill by recycling cans, bottles, construction material and cooking
oil. Blumenfeld says that even though the program officially
launches Wednesday, he's not surprised by how many people are already
fully participating.
'Not Rocket Science'
"We hear a lot about climate change,
and what we can do and should do, and what's happening in Congress,"
Blumenfeld says. "But people want to know what they can, practically,
do every single day, and composting your food scraps is probably the
single most effective thing you can do as a citizen in the United
States today."
Blumenfeld says composting is simpler than it may seem.
"This is not rocket
science," he says. "This is putting some food scraps into a different
pile and then turning it into compost. If we can't do that, then I
really worry about our ability to do some of those more complex things."
The city can fine people
for noncompliance, but officials say they are unlikely to use that
power except in extreme cases. San Francisco's ultimate and fairly
lofty goal --- according to Blumenfeld --- is to get to zero waste, meaning no garbage at all going into landfills, by the year 2020.
Other Ways To Recycle Food
In his new book, author
Tristram Stuart explains the innovative approaches some Asian countries
take to dealing with food waste -- such as recycling it as livestock
feed. Read more.
Composting Tips
Don't live in San Francisco? Here's how to compost independently:
Bin: Keep food waste in a bin with a ventilated lid in your kitchen; then mix it with yard waste and soil in a compost bin outside. After several months, the broken-down concoction can be returned to the garden or the ground.
Foods:
First-time composters should stick to innocuous items such as coffee
grounds, tea bags, vegetable and fruit scraps and corn husks. Greasy
foods, dairy products, meat scraps and bones will make the pile stink and could attract critters.
Non-foods:
Incorporate yard waste into the pile; grass clippings, leaves, shrub
waste and woodchips work well. A mixture of wet and dry items will help
the pile break down faster.
Maintenance:
To thrive and decompose, a compost pile requires oxygen and a good
carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. Periodically mixing up the compost with a
shovel, adding shredded cardboard to the pile and making sure the bin
gets adequate ventilation can help in these two areas.
Temperature:
Compost decomposes best when it's between 90 and 135 degrees
Fahrenheit. Retain heat by keeping your pile in the sun. Purchase a
black compost bin or buy an insulation jacket for your bin.
Hi there,
I just had a nice conversation with Jason of Skyline Displays regarding a
previous post of mine. It is nice to see some of you are finding value in these
posts.
Here is a writer working on an article evaluating the benefits of organic
products, and would particularly like to hear from academics and researchers.
Perhaps you can help him out.
Have a superb weekend.

I'm writing an article for In Good Tilth (a trade publication covering
organic products) about the validity (or non-validity) of claims made about
herbal remedies. I'd like to talk with researchers/academics about the
process by which claims are tested, and about the marketing of herbal
remedies. I'd particularly like to talk with people who are involved in
protecting consumers, or who are working for "truth in advertising."
Salutations, Green Business supporters-
SDGBN is pleased to announce our October General Membership meeting to be held
this coming Wednesday, Oct 21st. As always, the meeting will begin at 8:00 in
the 1st floor Training Room at the city's Ridgehaven Bldg in Kearney Mesa (info
below).
This month, we are honored to host a presentation by Sierra Club Green Home
representative Jennifer Schwab, recently featured in the Wall St. Journal:
Sierra Club Green Home (www.sierraclubgreenhome.com)
Sierra Club Green Home was developed with a simple mission in mind: to help
Americans make their homes more energy efficient, environmentally sustainable
and healthy. We do not sell products or services. Instead, we educate consumers
on how to improve their home health and connect them with Providers that can
help them achieve their goals. Our screening process ensures that all Providers
listed on our site can help you create a greener, healthier home by reducing
* your use of energy
* your use of non-renewable natural resources
* the presence of toxins and chemicals in your home.
While our education contains some fairly sophisticated content, we focus
primarily on “non-green” and “newly-green” citizens. Research indicates
the vast majority of Americans are not taking even simple steps to reduce their
impact â€" things like installing CFLs, turning off the water when brushing
teeth, recycling cans, bottles and newspapers, or looking for organic produce
options. We believe this is where SCGH can have the greatest benefit, by
influencing people to take those simple first steps to practice environmental
responsibility at home. And of course, we offer vast amounts of education and
products for the already-green who are looking to do even more.
Please join us Wednesday morning for a this presentation and take the
opportunity to promote your business through networking. We look forward to
seeing you.

Sundance-winning documentary offers solutions to America's addiction to foreign oil
This weekend, in theaters across the country, a rousing and revolutionary film will show real steps everyday Americans can take to end our catastrophic dependence on fossil fuels. It's important that you - and everyone you know - see this movie. It's called FUEL, and it's in a theater near you.
Winner of the Best Documentary award at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, FUEL is an amazing, in-depth, personal journey of oil use and abuse as it examines wide-ranging energy solutions other than oil, the faltering US auto and petroleum industries, and the latest stirrings of the American mindset toward alternative energy.
FUEL has been called "the unofficial sequel to An Inconvenient Truth." But where Al Gore's movie presented the dangers of the climate crisis, FUEL presents the solution. That's why it's also been called "the most hopeful movie of the year." This is an important movie, not because it sets out to scare you; but because it inspires audiences to action.
In early screenings at Sundance and across the country, FUEL has left audiences energized and ready to make a difference; in their communities and in how they live their lives. Coming into theaters with the support of an unprecedented grassroots movement, FUEL has grown beyond the environmental community to a rallying point for people from all backgrounds and all corners of our country.
This is a movie that entertains, that changes minds, and that inspires action. Tell your friends. Take your family. Share the film with your coworkers, the people at your Church, or whoever you know that wants a safer, cleaner, more economically sound nation.

I would like to invite you and your friends to hear an engaging multimedia presentation in San Diego, California,
on Saturday, October 3 -- "The Latest in Nutrition" by Michael Greger,
M.D., director of public health and animal agriculture at The Humane Society of the United States.
Attention to diet can help reduce the risks of chronic diseases that plague Americans, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes,
obesity, and certain cancers. And many people are reducing the amount
of animal-based foods they eat -- even just one meal or one day a week
-- to help combat global warming, inhumane factory farming practices, and other problems.
Join
Dr. Greger as he reviews -- in an interactive quiz show format -- the
latest in cutting-edge research published in peer-reviewed scientific
nutrition journals and learn for yourself (and your loved ones) how to
have a humane and healthy diet.
When: Saturday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m. Where: Health Services Complex, Coronado Room 3851 Rosecrans St. San Diego, CA 92110 (map) More Information: Refreshments will start at 6:45 p.m., and Dr. Greger will speak at 7:30 p.m.
A
tremendously entertaining medical speaker with an encyclopedic
understanding of human nutrition, Dr. Greger will offer practical
advice on how best to feed ourselves and our families to prevent,
treat, and even reverse chronic disease.
Following the presentation, Dr. Greger's captivating new DVD series,
"Latest in Clinical Nutrition," will be available for purchase.
I hope you will join us!
