Tools and Fuels for Sacred Dance:
A Choreography Workshop for your BodySpirit

This workshop is for those interested in exploring and developing material for sacred and liturgical dance. Workshop sessions will generate spiritual ideas (FUELS) and movement vocabulary (TOOLS) through various approaches.  Choreographic possibilities will be realized through technique, improvisation, imagery, sacred text and ritual. Participants will be offered time to develop their own ideas for solo and group endeavors. Additional crafting opportunities will allow feedback from the presenters in a non-threatening collaborative environment. An informal sharing or showing may prove to be a culmination of the process if that is the consensus of the group.

Experience dance in worship! Congregational dance is a regular part of Reba Place worship. Sacred Dance Guild Lakeshore Chapter President Katie Jean Dahlaw, who holds a BFA in dance performance, will also dance.

Workshop leaders:

Indi Dieckgrafe is Professor of Dance at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana and and she directs the Saint Mary's College Liturgical Dancers. She is a certified leader of the InterPlay improvisational technique and philosophy. As a sacred dancer and choreographer, she has worked with many congregations in the upper Midwest. The Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis has commissioned several works and she has performed with Kast and Company Liturgical Dancers and Add Water -n- Stir. She serves on the board of the United Religious Community in South Bend. Indi received her MFA in Performance and Choreography from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Her choreography workshop at the Lakeshore Mini-Festival at St. Mary's in 2004 received rave reviews.

Carolynn Hine-Johnson teaches Ballet, Jazz and Flamenco at Indiana University of So. Bend, Bethel College and for Christian Women's International Leadership at St. Mary's College in Indiana. She is artistic director of Danza Mosaica Flamenco Dance Company. Other projects include writing a book and presenting seminars for women on the physical and spiritual benefits of dance and directing a Sacred Dance Group at Little Flower Catholic Church in So. Bend, IN.  Also, as a council woman for the Lone Wolf Cherokee Band of Indiana, Carolynn is working on Native American dances to be performed in schools. She owned and operated two dance studios: Ballet Academy (1971-1989) and Arts Alive Academy (1997-2004). She has performed, taught and choreographed Ballet, Flamenco, Jazz and Modern Dance professionally throughout the United States, as well as presenting scholarly papers at various universities and conferences. Carolynn received her Doctorate in Dance Education from Temple University in Philadelphia.
