Thanks for responding to my message. I have found a lot of valuable
information from the people at the GAChristianHschooler site, but
thankyou for telling me about it anyway! It has been very helpful. I
did not realize that rules changed in different counties. That is very
valuable information!
Thanks,
Stefanie King

Welcome to the state. I live about 95 miles SW of Atlanta in
Columbus, (right on the border with Alabama). We have a wonderful
support group here (including a number of people from AL). If you
haven't checked out the GAChristianHschooler site on onelist you
really should; there are lots of people around Atlanta who are
members of that list and there seems to be many groups. I know that
Alabama's rules are different from Georgia's, which varies from
county to county.
I live in Muscogee County and all we have to do for elementary is
file a letter of intent and send in monthly attendance sheets. My
sister lives in Harris County and they required some kind of lesson
plan information.
Hope everything works out well.
Hello New Friends,
My name is Stefanie King and I presently live in Alabama. My husband has
a job offer in Norcross and we are looking at the opportunities afforded
to home schoolers in the area. I have home educated my 2 children, now
2nd and 4th grade, since they were three. I am seeking information about
local homeschool groups. In Alabama, most home school families are
members of a church covering where activities are planned, testing is
performed, and grades and attendance are kept on file. Would you tell me
if there are similar groups in your area?
Thank you for your time,
Stefanie King
Hi folks...
Just a quick note of introduction.
My name is LauraMaery Gold and I'm writing a new book on homeschooling to
be published this summer. I'll be lurking here to review this list for
inclusion in the book.
If any of you post something brilliant, I may ask permission to quote you.
(In fact, if any of you would like to contribute anecdotes or brief reviews
of free homeschool resources -- and possibly earn a free copy of the book
-- please drop by my Web page at <http://www.writerspost.com/hs4free>.)
I'm the mother of seven, and homeschool kids from 17 years to 19 months,
while writing books and cooking bad Chinese food.
I look forward to meeting those of you I haven't met on other lists.

Hi All:
I don't know if you are aware of this, but The great backyard bird count is
going to be from Feb-18 thru 21st. On one or more of the 4 days of the
census, participants are asked to spend 15 minutes observing and recording
bird species in their gardens or in green spaces near their home. Just
counting the birds is a science in itself! Participants then record their
tallies on the web site, which are grouped by zip code. The site also
shows what type of birds you might see where you live.
The Society asks the volunteers to follow procedures outlined on its world
wide web site WWW.BIRDSOURCE.ORG where the results are recorded. Among
some of the tips: fill the birdbath and keep the cat indoors. LOL!
We checked the site already and it's really neat. It even shows pictures
of the birds and their names, I have been wondering what types of birds I
have seen lately.
We are doing this as a project this week and I am going to have them look
the birds they saw up and write about them too.
I thought y'all may want to check it out!
Blessings,
Amy in Pooler

I do not have long distance, so I need to know what groups are available in

We live out in the country/woods & he has no children to play with.
We are above Forsyth if that helps.
Thankyou for any information.

There is one in Savannah F.E.F.C. , one in Statesboro, and another in
Effingham co. But I believe all those are too far from where you are at.
Are you on any other GA homeschool digests? If not I will ask for one
closer to where you live. I sure there is one much closer by.

Thanks, Amy. It seems harder and harder to find people with values so I know
what you mean. My daughter thankfully has a well grounded sense of personal
responsibility and moral values which I can contribute to having such a
wonderfully close family. I wish it were so with the rest of the nation but
sadly that is not the case with the majority. I hope I get to meet you in
person in February!

In order to join, it's $25.00 a year for the whole family, which they send
you a newsletter every month informing you of everything going on and also
send you a alpha list of all the members and the names and ages of their
children etc. They have a meeting the 2nd Tuesday of the month in
Savannah, which I normally miss since it's at night and so far from here.
They have a yearly yearbook as well. You can join at one of the skating
days. I believe it is 2.50 for members to skate and 3.50 for non members.
I would check it out atleast. My boys have friends still in PS as well,
but if say, my 14 yr old decided he was interested in a certain girl, I
would hope that it was a home school girl because they are more likely to
have values as I have. You know what I mean? Yes it does start at 10am.

How do I go about joining or finding out what activities are planned, etc.?
I think we come out for skating just to meet a few people although she is
not going to be too thrilled. Probably won't skate but then again she's a
teenager! I assume that the skating is 10 a.m.? I'm not from here but I have
lived here for about 25 years. My parents are all here and my husbands
family are native Savanniahians. We got a lot of flack at first but things
have settled down a bit because she still socializes with a few of her
public school friends from previous years.
can't wait to meet you on the 3rd! let me know if I need to be aware of
anything before then!

No, we don't belong and my daughter just gave me a dirty look when I told
about a homeschool group. She doesn't like skating apparently. I remember
when I was in school we skated every once in a while. It sure hurt when you

There is a homeschool group in Savannah, called F.E.F.C. (family education
for Christ) I belong to. I don't know if you are a member too. They have
skating the first thursday of the month for homeschoolers. My oldest is in
Algebra, and has been in it since 6th grade in P.S. only to find out this
Christmas when we pulled him out that he hasn't learned a thing and we are
having to start from scratch! My youngest has been hsed since the
beginning of the school year and haven't had any problems.
For my 8th grader, we are using Saxon for Algebra, and ABeka and BJU for
all the other courses. For the 5th grader, we use Saxon's 65 for math, and
Alpha Omega on all other subjects.
It has been a bit difficult for the oldest he misses his friends and loves
to socialize, but the youngest enjoys it. We have our good days and bad
days. I have two neighbor's down here that also hs their kids, but they
are much younger. One of them has two boys 5, and 9, the other has a girl
8, and a boy 6. So it makes it somewhat difficult for my oldest to play.
There are others out here his age, but they haven't come around since he's
been pulled out of PS. There are a lot of kids his age at the skating rink
though. I am having trouble getting him to talk to them though.

I am so glad to meet you! My daughter is going to be 15 in February so it
isn't that far off what your oldest is. How are you coping with the subject
matter and what type of curriculum are you using?
So, far I am very pleased with our first year although it has been hard
keeping on track with so many other things to distract me. Jasmine has been
doing well on her own except for a little rough patches in Algebra II this
year.
Do you belong to a homeschooling group? Looking forward to hearing more
about your experiences too!

Hello,
My name is Lea and I have a child that is currently going to a private
school here in Atlanta. He is in the first grade. I live in the
Atlanta/Chamblee area. I haven't yet started to home school my child but
I plan to starting next year (Lord willing). I have a child that the
school wants to pin the title of ADHD to but I refuse to accept this.
I have a sister who is homeschooling her children and has since they
were in Kindergarden. One of the boy is in College this year and is
doing well. There are several contacts out there on the internet and I
encourage you to get associated in a 'community'. I have received
nothing but overwhelming support from this group of people. They (as
well as my family) have been my inspiration that I can do this. Good
luck and if there is anything I can do to help you please let me know.
I have already contacted people in the town where we plan to move and
have received equal support from them as well.
Take care,
Lea Bates

A brief introduction! I am new to the online networking for homeschooling. I
have a kindergartener with special needs. After a brief, yet, very distressing
trial in public school, My husband and I decided to homeschool. We homeschooled
for 6 weeks with wonderful successes, with some frustrations, and peace and
tranquility. We continued his special resources (speech and resource) in the
public school twice a week and developed an IEP for him to be homeschooled with
the extra support. We visited the special needs kindergarten class, and was
encouraged to "try it" and then return to homeschooling if we were dissatisfied.
He now goes to the special needs K class everyday, and I am spending this time
to finish my graduate degree and get very organized to bring him back home for
school staring in the first grade. I am involved in a home school group through
my church, and we have planned field trips. I am intending to pull him out of
school for the day to attend these educational trips. I would be very
interested to get to know some of you that live on the east side of Atlanta.
Thank you!!
Hi,
We live in Woodstock. I have 5 kids from age 4 - 16. This is
the first year in a long time with no toddlers- everyone does school.
We use ATI, followed up with indiviualized specifics. We have
been home educating for about 10 y.
Janice
>Hi!
>I am new to the list & I need some help!
>I am Betsy. I have a son who will be 8 years old in November.
>I homeschooled him a year ago using the "unschooling" method. We were
having many problems with our local school he attended, so I had taken him
out & attempted unschooling.
>I did this from September 1998 - March 1999. He was in the first grade.
>Due to my health at the time - I put him back in school in March & he did
fine. He was also taking advantage of me at home & not wanting to learn
anymore. He is now in the second grade at the public school & his teacher
adores him & he is making excellent grades.
>The problem - He is an ADHD child with a sleep disorder. He must take meds
for both problems. I want badly to homeschool again. I love the unschooling
method & I need to know HOW I can keep him interested in learning as he
normally is. What did I do wrong? He ended up just wanting to watch
Nickelodeon most of the time. He even grew tired of playing online
educational games.
>But now - I feel that him getting up at 6 AM, & not getting off the
schoolbus til 4:30 PM is too long of a day for him!
>When he is at home on school days - he is wild, exhausted, whiney, & hard
to control. Normally he tries to obey & is a precious child, though
sometimes stubborn.
>But, this school year has been torture so far already. It takes 45 minutes
of begging to get him up in the AM, & I feel guilty for always sending him
out the door upset & rushed. Then, in the afternoon - there is barely
enough time for him to take a breath & it is time for him to do homework!
What should take 30 minutes turns into 2 hours - after begging him to get
started & get it done. You must realize that after school his hyper med has
worn off. Then, even with sleep med it is usually 11:00 PM & sometimes
later before he drifts off to sleep!
>I only want him to be happy & learn! If he is educated at home - he can
sleep late (as he needs to), & everything is not pressured at home! This
relieves stress for all 3 of us!
>However, he IS doing excellent at school, loves it once he is there, &
says he dcoesn't care if he is homeschooled or goes to school! He does hate
the exhausting routine of the day & we all feel that there is no "nice"
family time & we spend it begging & fussing - for him to get up, get ready,
do homework, take a shower, etc..
>One problem is here at home - we live in the country & he has NO friends
to socialize with. That bothers me.
>OK, I am sorry this is so long, but I need honest help!
>If anyone here has advice, an opinion, or anything - please feel free!
>Should I leave him in school? Should I unschool after a failed attempt
last year? Should I use a more structured method? (I considered ABEKA)
>By the way - I am south of Atlanta, Georgia - if anyone is from GA & needs
playmates for homeschooled kids? Thanks!!!

The Atlanta Christian Apologetics Project (ACAP) will be hosting a
two-day conference on Creation in November. It is officially titled "By
chance or design: Critiquing contemporary evolutionary theories and
presenting evidence for intelligent design". Guest speakers will
include Phillip E. Johnson (author of "Darwin on Trial" and "Defeating
Darwinism By Opening Minds'), Michael J. Behe (author of "Darwin's Black
Box"), William Lane Craig (author of "Theism, Atheism, and Big Bang
Cosmology" and others), and others...including a five-time nominee for
the Nobel Prize.
Seating is limited and registration is required. For complete details
on the conference, its topics and speakers, and a registration form,
please visit the ACAP web site. Please go to the Conference page at
http://www.atlantaapologist.org and print it out. I *strongly*
recommend that you register early as we will surely run out of room as
the conference nears. If you know of any creation groups, homeschool
groups, or church groups to pass this on to , feel free.
