Georgetown, Maine began in 1607 with the unsuccessful English Popham Colony at Atkin's Bay at the mouth of the Kennebec River (the "Sagadahock" then). Parker's Island was Georgetown's name until 1716 when Parker's Island, Woolwich, Phippsburg, and Bath ("Long Reach" then) were incorporated into "Georgetown on Arrowsic." Maine was part of Massachusetts and so Georgetown's name changed quite often. First it was Georgetown, York County, Massachusetts. In 1760, it was Georgetown, Lincoln County, Massachusetts. In 1781, Bath was incorporated, and so was separated from Georgetown. In 1820, Maine became a state, and it was Georgetown, Lincoln County, Maine. In 1854, it became Georgetown, Sagadahoc County, Maine. Hopefully it won't be changing anymore! My family hailed from Georgetown in the 1750's, and as I printed pages of my ancestors from microfilms, I realized I was related to nearly half the families there! I figured it was only a matter of time before I was related to the other half, and so this web group....
