LDS has now placed on-line for FREE all Texas Death Certificates through 1976. You can search, you can print and you can save!!!  You get the actual microfilm image of the original death certificate!!!

Drop down the page to VITAL RECORDS and click on TEXAS DEATHS, 1890-1976 and begin your search.

They have a feature that allows you to click to narrow down your search. You can choose gender, male or female or letter for first name. Example, you search for Smith death in Harris Co., TX, died between 1920-29, female.

Really cool search features that allow you to narrow down your searches.

(And many, many other records!)

Please test the test version of the Jewish Herald-Voice database, now
including the years 1908 thru June 2008. What they have on line only goes
thru 2006. They asked us to test what we had for up-to-the-end of 2007 and
no one replied that they tested it. They have now made available thru June
2008 for testing. I was hoping to get the 100 years available during their
hundred year celebration and get some publicity. Please test the test
version of the database by visiting the JewishGen USA Database at
http://jewishgen.org/databases/USA/ and add the word #TEST# after the
surname, i.e. Katz#TEST#. The new records will only be found via that page
and not directly from the Jewish Herald-Voice search page.

Please reply to me if it looks right or if it doesn't so that we can get
this live and get some publicity. I searched for entries I knew were in 2008
and found them.

Thanks,
Max

The JewishGen on-line search of the Jewish Herald-Voice project has now been
extended through June 2008, an additional year and a half of records. We
should now be able to get publicity in the Jewish Herald since we finally
have their first 100 years on-line.

The intros have been updated, but are not live...
simply have to do a rename of the HTML file.
I'll do so shortly.

I thought you might be interested in this Hanukkah Special. Please share this with your friends.

Dear Friends,

PBS is airing "Lights! Celebrate Hanukkah Live in Concert" featuring Craig Taubman, Joshua Nelson, the Klezmatics, among others. Here in Houston it is airing this Thursday evening the 4th at 7:00, and Wednesday evening the 10th at 10:00.

Spread the word about it; it should be great! It is a first for PBS and if it is well received hopefully it will not be their last.

Best wishes,

Danny Horwitz

Hi All,

In follow-up to Jacob Rosen's comment in praise of Facebook ("I used
my secretary's Facebook account (I am not a member) to send a note
to the potential relative and got a positive response in just half
an hour"), I have also found Facebook a great way to locate
relatives - including sometimes unknown ones. Many of you may be
aware of this possibility already. About a year ago, I was trying to
trace a cousin of mine in Israel. All I knew was that Munie SCHORR
was a retired radiologist whom I had met once only, back in 1985. I
sent a message to all of the SCHORRs in Facebook (24 at the time)
and within 24 hours I had had a reply from his grand-daughter! Munie
had in fact died at the grand old age of 91 a few months previously,
but I am now in touch with his family.

I saw the announcement for geni.com at the IAJGS in Chicago last August,
entered my GEDCOM and forgot about it until a distant cousin found me. Now I
have invited all relatives I have e-mail addresses for and I found so many
new e-mail addresses, relations, photos. It is amazing. Be careful what you
ask for...

An interesting project. Does our membership have any such yearbooks?

Subject: Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island Request

Hi all,

I’m writing you today because you’re either an officer of your local JGS or you’re someone who I’ve worked with previously through JewishGen’s Holocaust Database or JOWBR projects.  Today I’m writing regarding a project that I’m coordinating for my own JGS, the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island.

We have been operating our Yearbook Project successfully for the last 2 ½ years and have created a worthwhile resource that has attracted the attention of family members and researchers throughout the country.  We originally started with our own members but since the list of yearbooks is available on our website, we expanded the program to include anyone who wished to participate.

Today our yearbook inventory includes approximately 650 books from 23 different states and 4 different countries!  JGSLI acts as a matchmaker between the researcher and the owner of the yearbook.  The books stay in the possession of the owner and the owner is only called upon to respond to look-ups, through blind emails, when a match has been made.

I’ve attached a copy of an article I’ve written which explains the merits of using yearbooks for genealogical purposes.  It also defines the roles for JGSLI, the yearbook owner and the researcher.  We would appreciate if you would consider announcing this project to your membership.  If you’d like, we would be happy to permit the use of the attached, or a shorter form of it, as a piece for your Society newsletter.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and if you have any comments or questions, please feel free to contact me directly.

The link Deena mentioned at tonight's meeting regarding the historic
newspaper, including better copies of the early JHV:

http://www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica/

It is incredible what they have done. I compared Nov 26 1908 p. 5 and our CD
has tons of lines across and this on-line page:

http://www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica/ndnp:4780224/display.html?n=1&scope=fu
lltext&pageNum=1¤tSort=&mode=list

has no lines. Amazing!

Also, a reminder to check out geni.com. My collection of family and e-mail
addresses for family has grown exponentially.

Dear Genners,

The following information is of the utmost importance to all of us. There
was an article published in the Washington Post, by Randy Herschaft,
regarding
the Int'l Task Force on the Holocaust and it's efforts to get governments
to
assume greater responsibility for the protection of all sites. Paul Shapiro

of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. would be able to
give
guidance to anyone that may want to help in that regard.

from the story:
Father Desbois' work is also having an impact on efforts to preserve
Holocaust sites. In December, the 26-nation International Task Force on
the Holocaust called on European governments to ensure the protection of
locations such as the mass graves Desbois is uncovering, according to
Shapiro, who helped draft the resolution.

This is very interesting. Click on a country, and you will get a history of Jews of that country !!!

This is absolutely enthralling. If you click on a particular country, it will give you
a history of Judiasm in that country, with links to other stories. I would put this into my "favorites" folder a nd look at it every so often. There is far too much information to attempt to assimilate in one sitting.

Dear Max,

I just tested the databases, both the individual and the couples.  Using Katz#TEST# both with and without a space preceeding the # sign produced no results found.  Just to double check, I also searched on just “Katz” and found numerous hits.  I also ran similar tests on Yoffa and Jaffe with the same results.

Please advise.

It is case sensitive. I got nothing if I did not capitalize all of TEST (Katz#TEST#). Then I got lots before and after this part:

The Jewish Herald-Voice database at JewishGen now containing the 100 years
of the Jewish Herald-Voice from 1908 through the end of 2008 is now in test
mode:

Just search the All USA database (http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/USA/ )
and add the word #TEST# after the surname, eg:

Katz#TEST#

Please test this so that we can get some publicity in the Herald about the
entire first 100 years being searchable via JewishGen. Please send me
feedback. No one tested the last update besides me. Please test and reply.

Thanks,
Max

The JewishGen database has been updated to now index the period from the
founding of the paper in 1908 through the end of 2008 completing the first
100 years. We should contact the JHV for some publicity.

Updates every 6 months are fine.

I am receiving semi-annual updates to the Jewish Herald-Voice database,
although the QC takes a bit of time. Are updates every 6 months too frequent
for you to update the JewishGen JHV database?

Chicago Jewish Newspaper Online
Digitized images of the Chicago Jewish newspaper, The Sentinel, are now
online at http://hannah.spertus.edu:8881/R covering the years 1911-1949. The
search engine includes an any-word index. When an image is displayed, the
words searched are highlighted for easy location of the information sought.
I was able to get the maiden name of a woman who married into the family
from a 1930 engagement announcement. The search engine is very quick, but
retrieving the actual page from the edition of the newspaper take a while
apparently because the edition is searched again to find the data.

I wish we could do this type of word search with the JHV project. Perhaps I
will talk with Logan again in August in Philly...

Ancestry Adds 1940-Era City Directories
Ancestry.com has added to its collection more than 2,000 U.S. city
directories for 1940 and surrounding years. Forerunners of phone books, city
directories typically list head of household with address and occupation.
New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia are not included. It is possible
there were no city directories for those cities at that time. The collection
does include such cities as Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Hartford, Miami,
Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, San Diego and San Francisco. Although Los Angeles is
not included there are directories for a number adjacent suburbs. The
directories can be accessed at
http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=1540.

In the next few weeks, Ancestry.com will be adding to their U.S. Public
Records Index database more than 525 million names, addresses, ages, and
possible family relationships of people who lived in the United States
between roughly 1950 and 1990.
