Here's a simple (I presume!) question from a rank beginner: How do I enter notes
into my 76CSx calendar? I know how to do it on my old eTrex Legend, but the 76
has me puzzled. The Owner's Manual is of no help.

You can't.
When you make a waypoint in the unit the comment for it is set to the date/time
of creation. It then shows up in the calendar but it can't be edited from there.
I'm not sure what the point is but that's what Garmin implemented.
Thanks. Not the answer I'd hoped for, but it will save me from continuing to
hunt through the various buttons and menus! This does seem like an unfortunate
retrogression from my little eTrex Legend's calendar capability.

No longer in broadcast engineering, I have little use from my near mint
GPSmap76CSX. It has a SanDisk 2.0GB card loaded with a huge area of the City
Select North America v6 and Garmin Topo installed. Also a like new Gilsson
external antenna with 16ft lead. The antenna was an asset in a Class C
Motorhome.

Hi Rory,
I would like $190 complete as it came new in original box. I will include a 2MB
microSD card, but I will erase it to a blank.
I have been thinking that most likely I can not, and should not, include any
additional mapping software above what came with the unit.
I also have a Gilsson external antenna with 16ft cord which I used in the
motorhome. I notice the recent models don't include antenna connections.

I have For Sale a very clean GPS Map 76CSx in original box.

2. 12 Volt DC cord
3. GPSMap 76CSx "Owners Manual"
4. GPSMap 76CSx "Quick Reference Guide"
5. CD "City Select North Americ v6" detailed maps U.S. Canada, Puerto Rico
6. Map Source "Setup Guide"
7. Map Source Mapping Software "Users Manual"
8. Map Source User's Manual and Reference Guide"
9. CD "Trip and Waypoint Manager"

and ask me any quesetions you have.
Positive points for this GPS, many say it is easier to see in the bright sun
over newer models. Also the GPSmap 76CSx has access for an external antenna.
I am asking $225. Sales to US. Buyer pays actual shipping and insurance.

I just bought a new Seadoo jetski and they no longer have the glove box mount
for the Garmin series 76 GPS. The handlebar mounts do not work on jet skis due
to the bulky design so I believe I will use a marine mount.
I have found at least three different marine mounts for the series 76. One is
called a "ram" mount and looks like 2 ball & sockets and a thumb screw clamp.
The other two are more of a "slide on" type mount. Does anybody have
experience with these mounts and can recommend one they like?
This isn't exactly the same application, but I use RAM mounts to hold a video
camera to my bicycle handlebars and another on my rear rack. When you get them
positioned and tightened down, they don't move.
Front mount:

Rear Mount:

Going even more off-topic, here's a video I shot with them them the other night:

And, if they can keep the camera from flying off when you're on an unpaved
trail, I think you'll be OK with them on a jetski.

I use RAM mounts on my motorbike & 4WD. Rock solid.
Make sure you get the one with the stainless steel fittings, there are two kits,
one sheradised bolts, the other stainless.

I use my Garmin 76 for speed & course while racing. But the Tack Tick &
Velocitek devices have far superior features strictly for racing.
Anyone know of "hacks" that can do similar features. I especially like the new
ways of pinging the line and getting feedback on the distance to the line.
Any chance Garmin would develop such "Apps"?

What Class boat are you racing??? I wouldn't think Tacktick or
Velocitek would be legal for dinghy racing. Or maybe times have
changed since I was on top of things.
And sorry, I don't have an answer to your question.

In my previous versions of MapSource, my currently selected route would be
displayed in yellow, and the non-selected routes would be in purple. Now, with
version 6.16.3 , ALL of my routes, whether selected or not, are purple. The
current route is more prominent, but purple nonetheless. I know I can set a
permanent color of choice for each route, but I would prefer to have the
currently selected route displayed in a color different from the non-selected
routes. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

A new version of Mapsource came out today, version
6.16.1. The detailed part of the maps do not show up in this new
version. I have informed the programmers and they promise to look into
it.
If you wish to use this version and still be able to use an
older version to allow the maps to be seen, you need to follow these
instructions prior to installing the new version.
1) Find the file "Mapsource.exe". The
default location is C:\Program Files\Garmin.
2) Rename this file to something else such as
"Mapsource_old.exe".
3) Create a shortcut to the renmaed file somewhere to
allow you to run the old version.
4) Install the new version. It will run with the
normal shorcuts. You can have as many different version running at the
same time as you wish without any problems. This is verified directly
with the Mapsource programmers.

Please don't click on the link. It is spam but I'm not sure if it was deliberate

The space key died on my Dell XP laptop and I got tired of holding a paperclip
to short the contacts for spaces so I got a nice new Samsung Windows 7 laptop.
Of course all the apps get installed which required getting some new drivers
and/or new versions. No driver available for the HP scanner but it can do a
basic scan but the light stays on.
With Garmins help I got MapSource 6.16.3 installed and my map and charts
unlocked.
When I go into Mapsource Help / USB Driver Versions it reports no driver
installed. When I go into Device Drivers it reports Driver 2.3.0.0 installed and
device working correctly.
After a few minutes the 76 beeps and disconnects. Then it keeps reconnecting and
disconnecting somtimes pausing a few minutes between cycles and sometimes only a
few seconds. A USB port is used just for the 76CSx and before it disconnects,
Mapsource sees the device when it is not beeping and disconnecting.
Could this be a cable issue or just more Garmin USB driver funnies?
If a cable, this seems like a short life for something that does not get used a
lot. Thanks
Doug
You have a defective connector on the computer or the cable. Return it and get another one is my suggestion, but the next batch may be just as bad. I think the quality of the USB connector design is terrible, and have had many problems due to the poor tolerances and lack of positive engagement.
Perhaps they were designed by the lowest bidder?

Thanks Mark. I will try the phone or my hub in that port and maybe the Garmin cable in one of the other 2 laptop ports. If the port appears to function I will order a new Garmin cable unless it is a generic USB cable.
I suppose swapping ports for the phone might start a whole new round of USB foibles.

I tried just the cable (no 76CSx attached) in 2 ports and Win7 reports a device
error, it does not recognize the device and suggests replacing the device. Doing
the same with the phone cable or HDD cable (similar connectors) does nothing.
Sounds like a cable.
It usually causes one little glitch and driver re-assignment when you move a device to another USB port, but nothing major. The biggest load of crap in the industry is the Universal part of USB – each port is unique. They play nice with most things because the operating system is optimized to use them.

Then MapSource, and other Garmin programs, won't be able to find your GPS.
MapSource will report the driver version whether anything is connected or not. A
bad cable can't cause that problem.
New cable ordered from Garmin.

I thought so also but until the disconnect occurs, Mapsource sees the device and
starts building the map to transfer. I did download the driver again and
installed it. The Garmin driver installer reported no errors but this made no
difference.

I'd try disconnecting ALL USB devices and see if MapSource reports the driver
version. If it does or does so intermittently the problem is NOT due to any
cable. It is either a hardware issue in the PC's USB ports and/or a software
issue with the driver.

With no USB devices or cables plugged in, booted laptop.
Started Mapsource- reported no device driver installed.
Plugged GPS in and it started beeping and Windows Device Manager keeps updating
alternating with showing the device and not showing the device.
My old XP laptop used to randomly lose the Garmin drivers but this is unusable.
