Subject: LiA (Leadership in Action) Awards for Cadettes (& Brownies)- Oveview
gs_susan
Send Email Send Email

The only time you can earn a Leadership in Action (LIA) award is when you are a Cadette.  And you can only earn it by working with Brownies working on a Brownie Journey.  Here's an overview by Deborah Corbishley to help you pick which one to work on (first).  And if you're a Brownie leader working on a Journey, perhaps you can find a few Cadettes or a Cadette troop who'd like to work with you.  Just ask.

LIA Award Requirements Overview

It's Your Story – Tell It
1. Find a Team of Brownies to work with and talk with their adult volunteer.
2. Review the Brownie World Of Girls Book and leader guide, find out the leaders' plans and what the girls will be doing.
3. Attend some of the Brownie gatherings and complete the following with them:
     a. Inspire them about stories in their lives, talk about media stories and how they make girls feel, discuss what media portrayals of girls seem true, and share stories about girls and women you met or learned about in your Journey
     b. Guide the girls in building teamwork skills
     c. Introduce the girls to a healthy new activity
     d. Use media and art forms with them to explore story telling

It's Your Planet – Love it
1. Identify a team that is doing or has done WOW.
2. Talk to the adult leader and look at the WOW books.
3. Attend some Brownie sessions and complete the following:
a. Guide the Brownies through a fun activity relating to air or water
b. Inspire Brownies to try a new healthy habit (food or activity)
c. Short activity to help Brownies think about teamwork
d. Discuss how you are living one line from the Girl Scout law and discuss with them how they might be trying to live out a line of the law.

It's Your World -- Change It
1. Assist at 4 Brownie sessions of Brownies on a Quest
2. Plan and organize 3 activities (there are 2-3 activities per session)
3. Use your special skills and talents to do something "just for fun" with the Brownies at one session: try to tie it into the Quest
4. Engage in a healthy habit with the girls involving food or movement

Could we get an email with the flyer attached to the email, so that it would be easier to send out to our leaders?  I think if you simply email the group from your regular email server, you can attach a document.  I'm happy to forward it, but frankly don't have the time right now, to search out the document on yahoogroups, download, attach to my email, etc.

Thanks,
Mary

Be A Voice for Girls!
Support the Healthy Media for Youth Act

We need your help to encourage your Members of Congress to sponsor House Bill 2513/Senate Bill 1354 today!
Kids are surrounded by media. From television to movies to social media and new technologies, kids are consuming up to 10 hours of recreational media each day. Unfortunately, media doesn’t always promote healthy images of girls. Girl Scouts’ research tells us that girls are very influenced by what they see in the media, and that it can have a significant impact on their self-esteem, body image, and leadership aspirations.
To address this issue, Girl Scouts has worked with Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (WI) and Senator Kay Hagan (NC) on the Healthy Media for Youth Act (H.R. 2513/S 1354). This legislation would:
  • Provide competitive grants for organizations like Girl Scouts, that provide media literacy programming and leadership development that helps empower girls.
  • Support research to help us better understand the impact of media on youth development.
  • Create a federal task force to develop voluntary recommendations that help the media industry put forward healthy images of women and girls.
Take action today and send a message to your U.S. Representative and Senator asking them to cosponsor this important bill that impacts all girls.

I just found this program on the GSNNJ website.  It looks interesting.  Perhaps some of your girls would be interested in attending.

25th Annual Senior Leadership Conference
March 9-11, 2012
Salve Regina University
Newport, RI

Girl Scouts from the Northeastern states are invited to gather at beautiful Salve Regina
University in Newport, RI, for a weekend to remember!  Girls will choose four 75-minute
workshops from over 50 leadership workshops led by outstanding female consultants where
they will discuss contemporary issues (college prep issues, diversity, social justice, personal
growth, peer pressure), learn strategies to assist peers, experience diverse stress
management techniques, and more!  Adults will attend separate workshops.  Everyone will
sleep camp-style in dorm lounges, activity rooms, etc., and eat Saturday meals and Sunday
breakfast in the University Cafeteria.  Activities include a dance in one of Newport’s fabulous
mansions owned by Salve, movies, crafts, sports, improv, chorus, walking the famous Cliff
Walk, and more!  Don’t forget to bring SWAPS!  Seniors can choose to be on the Conference
Council and plan the closing program, sing in the Conference Chorus, share their community
action project, participate in the Conference service project, etc.

Girls must be registered Girl Scouts and be in tenth to twelfth grade.
No exceptions will be made.
Cost: $75.00 per person, Senior Girl Scouts and adults
$10.00 per person for optional Conference T-shirt—please specify size on registration form
Capacity:  250 Senior Girl Scouts and 50 adults
Registration and full payment must be received by November 10, 2011

Subject: The Great Girl Scout Hike - Hiking the Appalachian Trail in bits & pieces
normandsusan
Send Email Send Email

This is one of those BIG special things that the girls can be a part of during this special Centennial year. We're hoping for a national fun patch and maybe a local t-shirt.  Even if leaders don't want to lead this adventure, there may be troop parents or friends who would love to help.  More details are below.

I just learned something about the Appalachian Trail - did you know that it is the only linear National Park.  It is about 2,180 miles long and goes from Georgia to Maine.  Almost all of the trail is on public lands.
There will be group through-hiking the entire Appalachian Trail from beginning to end so we can be sure that every "bit" will be covered.  They will be posting their schedule so they can welcome groups who would like to hike with them at some point. This also means that local groups can hike whatever pieces they want again and again.
The NY-NJ Trail Conference is helping coordinate the hikers in this area.  I am helping James Forde to coordinate this for GSNNJ.  Please share this with your leaders.  The organizers are planning to put together a list of hikes with info on difficulty and distance so troops can plan appropriate hikes (1 hour strolls for Daisies to 3-day backpacking extravaganzas for experienced older girls).  We're also hoping to have meetings/sessions to provide more information and guidance/training for novice leaders possibly combined with small local hikes.
Here's the local Trail Conference link
http://www.nynjtc.org/

As more information becomes available we can share it directly with those who are interested.  Send an email to GSHikeNYNJ@...

Per below, you can friend the overall hike on facebook.

Make it a birthday to remember!

by JENNIFERPFISTER on  JUNE 3, 2011
We are looking for Girl Scouts of all ages (from 5 to 95) to pick a section of the Appalachian Trail to hike in honor of our 100th anniversary. Our hiking journey starts Monday, March 12, 2012 (Girl Scouts 100th birthday) and ends Wednesday, October 31, 2012 (Juliette Gordon Low’s 152nd birthday).
Our event’s Honorary Chair Mary “Mama Boots” Sands inspired this celebratory hike. As a Girl Scout Leader in Kentucky (Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana) she began hiking and backpacking the Appalachian Trail in the early 1970s. Over the course of nearly 20 years, accompanied by groups of Girl Scout girls and adults, she eventually hiked the entire 2000+ miles of the AT – in bits and pieces or section-hiking.
So join your sister Girl Scouts across the East Coast – across the nation – across the globe who are gathering to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2012 to celebrate our golden years. Go to the “SIGN-UP” tab above or click here to sign-up for a section today and join the Great Girl Scout Hike!

My Ambassador Troop does workshops that we have approved through Council but we are having problems getting Council to send them out to all Service Units.  Over the past three years, we have done workshop on Faeries and Butterflies.  They are very well received and we fill them up.  We have developed a new workshop, Safari Adventure, which has been approved by Council.  Council tells me it was distributed to surrounding SUs.  In previous year we have had troops attend from Blairstown, Columbia, Califon, Long Valley, Randolph, Parsippany, etc. which are definitely not surrounding SUs.  Some of these troops heard about the workshops through friends that live in other Service Units.  Also, last year we did get one flyer out to more S.U.s because I pushed for it.  These workshops are for Daisies and Brownies.

I was wondering if you would send the Safari Adventure flyer out to your SUM Yahoo Group?  It is two pages - the flyer and a registration form.

Thanks in advance,

Betty Reid

If you don't have your new Girl Guide books yet but would like to start on some badge work, here is an unofficial website that is listing badge requirements.  So far they only have Daisy thru Junior done, but they're working on adding the rest.

Have you ever envied the Boy Scouts looking good on parade while we've been a bit slapdash?  Have you wanted to get your leaders into a unifying look or provide an easy way to be identified as a Girl Scout leader on an outing?

We just created Mahwah Girl Scout polo shirts for around $25 total.  You may have seen me wearing mine.

We ordered plain polo shirts from cheapestees.com .  The shirt we picked is reasonable quality, everyone says it's comfortable, and so far they wash well (but we just got them).  The style we purchased is Outer Banks http://www.cheapestees.com/outbanladcot.html  Price is $13.54 (but I got a batch at 20% off with a coupon).  They have women's sizes to 3X and men's to 4X. They ship for free with a $69 purchase.  We've bought navy for leaders and white for girls.  Order to receipt time has been 3-5 days without paying extra.

Next, we bring them to a local (Mahwah) woman-owned business who does embroidery.  Her prices are comparable with the manufacturer bulk embroidery, but she can do small batches if we need them (even if the piece price is then higher).  White thread for leaders, and green for girls.  cost is $5-6 per shirt.  Christine DiDomizio, Stitch-It-Up Embroidery, 201-512-9881.

Then we purchase from council the official $4 100th anniversary national round patch.  It's green and yellow on a white background.

Then the patch is ironed on the shirt and then machine sewed for security.  Placement is above the embroidery.  Cost $2-3 per shirt.

And the end result, good quality shirts that look good, are customized for our town, identify us as leaders, and help us to answer the age-old question - "what should I wear?"

You could lower the cost by selecting a lower-priced shirt if you like.  I actually have some extra medium and large navy shirts I have to return, just let me know if you're interested.

By the way, I'm not affiliated with any of the mentioned businesses, I'm just sharing what we did.  I was SO excited when I saw the patch for sale.  I knew a custom shirt was in my future.

Hi Susan,

Thank so much for sharing your resources here. For anyone who attended the Paramus SUM meeting at 10 AM on Tuesday, Susan was wearing her shirt then. I liked it so much that I asked her to share her info. Thank you Susan. You. Are. Awesome.

Subject: October Coat Drives?

I heard last night that the salvation Army had lots of coats ( and maybe clothes
too ) damaged and lost from Hurricane Irene. Traditionally they do a huge coat
distribution in November. If your service unit can organize, I bet they would
really appreciate coats collected in October or the 1st half of November. Often
schools will let us have collection boxes in their lobby for a week or so, as
long as they are checked/emptied regularly.

We have also had grocery stores allow us to stand outside on a weekend day for
coat collection ( like where we would stand for a booth sale). And these are
coats that would stay in the area to help "neighbors".

Just a thought,

Girl Scouts Now Eligible for VFW’s Scout of the Year Scholarships
VFW proudly announces that Girl Scout Gold Award recipients are now eligible to compete for the VFW Scout
of the Year Scholarships. Delegates at the 112th VFW National Convention voted to establish Girl Scouts of
the USA as an official VFW Youth Activity, making them newly eligible for the scholarships.

Each year, the VFW selects three young people — of the Boy or Girl Scouts, Sea Scouts or Venturing Crew —

who have demonstrated practical citizenship in school, scouting and the community. The first-place

winner receives a $5,000 award, the second-place winner receives a $3,000 award and the third-place winner

receives $1,000.

Subject: New Troop Crests - Meanings
normandsusan
Send Email Send Email

Did you know that the first Girl Scout troops didn't have identifying numbers, they had an identifying crest.  So the tradition of a troop crest goes back to the beginning of Girl Scouts.  These are the new ones that are shaped like a shield and here are their official meanings.

Troop Crests
Arrow
Arrows stand for action and moving forward, so this symbol shows you hope to do a lot to change the world.
Bee
Bee symbolize hard work and industry. This symbol could show that you want to work hard and inspire others.
Bluebird
Bluebirds stand for happiness and good fortune. Choosing a bluebird crest says you want to spread good cheer wherever you go.
Carnation
The carnation was one of the first two troop crests. It stands for health and energy--sound like the right symbol for friends who have tons of energy to make the world a better place!
Crane
The crane stands for strength and gracefulness in China and for honor and loyalty in Japan. Choosing a crane shows you want to live with strength and grace, always remaining true to your friends and values.
Eagle
The eagle's excellent sight helps it see important details. With this crest, show that you want to bring focus and hard work to whatever you do.
Lei
The Hawaiian lei is a symbol of friendship, love, and peace. Choose to share your wish to spread peace and goodwill in the world.
Lightning
A bolt of lightning stands for inspiration and creative power. This symbol might be chosen by a group who seeks inspiration in their own lives and hopes to inspire others.
Nautilus Shell
The nautilus grows into larger chambers through its life. And there's a secret inside the shell -- it's lined with mother-of-pearl. This symbol could show that you want to keep growing and changing -- on the inside and the outside.
Pansy
Pansies stand for loving thoughts and special friendships. This symbol could show the bonds you have with all your Girl Scout sisters.
Shooting Star
Shooting stars are rare, unexpected, and beautiful! Choosing this symbol shows that you are like a shooting star -- a team that lights up the world.
Sun
The sun represents warmth and life, and it helps plants and trees grow strong. Choose this crest to show that you want to spread good cheer, too, and help yourselves and others grow.
Trumpet
When a trumpet sounds, it announces that you're ready to march into action. You might choose this symbol to remind yourselves of your courage to take action to make the world better.
Unicorn
Unicorns are mythical creatures that are beautiful and courageous. With this symbol, show you have the courage to spread beauty with words and actions.
Waterfall
A waterfall is always in motion -- but it always looks the same! Choosing the waterfall shows you want to stay true to what you believe even though the world is always changing.
White Rose
The white rose stands for new beginnings -- maybe that's why it was one of the first two troop crests. It's a wonderful symbol for girls who are starting out on an adventure.
