Thanks for that head's up, Tim! I has assumed that the prohibition on cell phones aboard commercial aircraft had to do with EMC issues with comm/nav systems....

Hi everyone, A bit of good news for me and my family, but it impacts the balloon flying next summer. Shari and I are expecting our second child next July....
Good luck to you and yours on the to be "new born". The consensus in the NE Oklahoma area is that if it is on a holiday weekend no one wil be able to go due to...
I'm gone the weekend of 9 - 16 July and the first two weekends in August aren't too good either. Non-holiday weekends tend to work better for us, but I don't...
Hi Mark, Well, I guess early congratulations are in order! Unfortunately, June and July are jam-packed as usual for EOSS. We have Space Grant flights ...

QSYing this round table to GPSL for a wider discussion ... Responding to Mark's discussion of the potential of 12-18hr flights, I have a scheme that appears to...

We've experimented with this concept a little. We were successfully able to glue an eye-bolt to the top of the "MAIN" balloon and attach the "BOOSTER" above....
What kind of glue? For a duration flight, it would seem the glue would affect the balloon's longevity. I wonder if the "booster" could be flown right next to...
Regarding balloons bouncing off of each other, see the image at http://www.amrad.pt/lancamento_cinelsat2.php. This configuration flew for 15hrs+ (15hrs is all...

I'm copying Don's repeater very roughly on a discone in the attic here in Hutchinson, KS. The glue was some 3M stuff that was kind of tricky to get a hold of....
I think we're down to one of the three summer holiday weekends for our new GPSL 2005 date - Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day. I'm a little partial to...
Hi Ralph, WE've tried pairs of balloons in order to achieve a controlled, moderate descent rate. Theoretically, the "ballast" balloon would also serve as a ...

I would love to go on a chase like this. Would a Memorial Day weekend be the ideal time? Paul...
Regarding use of "BALLAST" or "BALLCHUTE" balloons (Mike's terms), ISGC/ISU/HABET has flown a few successful missions using three balloons. Lift from a larger...

As long as we can do a launch that I have vacation time for, I'd be happy to help with the chase and recovery. I like the latex balloon method not only...
I would suggest a goal of a 10-12 hr flight (dawn-dusk) for our first attempt. This would lend itself to a long day but could be handled with the 'normal'...
I haven't kept up with the thread, so this may have been covered. One point I haven't seen covered yet is; it is my understanding the latex balloons are...
... Ralph: I've always really liked the MAIN and BOOSTER concept, but I think a long flight as you describe may be very hard to obtain. One out-house data...
Ralph: Respectfully, I think you're off a bit on your "10X" cost increase estimate for the jump from latex to poly. I've been quoted $200 to $300 for a 3000...
I've done several 2 and 3 balloon flights some years ago.....the 3 balloon flight was interesting in that 2 of the balloons burst but one remained and provided...

A flight during Field Day would be interesting. It's during vacation, so it's convienent. The chase of 240 miles is not excessive for a summer vacation drive....
I don't remember if it was after I got back from GPSL 2004 or our next flight that I ran a prediction with a 12 hr float @ 80,000. The payload would've ended...
If the long duration flight takes to the air, I have a light weight (2 pound) HF beacon package. It can send a PSK-31 message, 300 bps FSK APRS message, or...
