MAY FEATURED ACTIVITIES: Butterflies
==============================================================
This idea came from The Story Teller's newsletter for distributors,
The Inside Story:
WATCH A CATERPILLAR EVOLVE INTO A BUTTERFLY
Our Butterfly felt set (
http://www.funfelt.com/science.html ) offers
17 realistic butterflies as well as 7 figures to explore their life
cycles as they evolve from a caterpillar to a butterfly. They can be
used in teaching about the many kinds of butterflies you may have in
your area, to decorate a room or bulletin board, and to teach colors.
Children love the following activity! You can find caterpillars on
most plants or even on the sidewalks during the spring and early
summer. Pace a paper towel in the bottom of a wide mouth jar or
plastic shoe box to help prevent mold. Add pencil-sized twigs upon
which the caterpillar can attach its chrysalis or silken cocoon (with
the pupa inside) fresh leaves, and a caterpillar. Cover the jar mouth
with netting, a piece of nylon, or a lid with holes made with a small
ail. Put the container in a cool dry place and do not disturb it.
The insect will hatch in 10-14 days/. Encourage your children to
check it every day so they don't miss the excitement as it crawls out
of the cocoon! it's interesting to finally discover if it is a moth
or butterfly, and what kind.
Before releasing your prize, you can photograph it! Don't be
disappointed if small wasps or flies - natural parasites - hatch out
instead. These insects keep the butterfly and moth populations under
natural control.

The next idea is from independent Story Teller distributor Jacqui
Gaskill mailto:
gaskill1@... THANKS Jacqui!
I have a butterfly project for toddlers(I have done this with
children about 18-24 months):
First Take a piece of large construction paper and fold it in half.
Put some finger paint on the outside of the paper on one half only,
and let your child finger paint just the one side. Then open the
paper and close it backwards so the one half painted side is on the
inside and have your child pat the paper so the painted design they
made is now a mirror image on both halves of the paper. Open the
paper and let it dry. When the paint is dry, fold the paper again
and cut into the shape of a letter B. When you open it up, it will
look like a beautiful butterfly! You can close the paper and say "b
is for..." and open it and say "BUTTERFLY!"

The following suggestions are from independent Story Teller
distributor, Becky Maiatico
mailto:
3musktrs@... THANKS Becky!
Here are some ideas:
1)This activity and the link** is taken from the SmarterKids.com
site. Excellent site, by the way!
May is National Book Month---
In this classic book, A Very Hungry Caterpillar, a caterpillar eats
through a week’s worth of fruit before turning into a beautiful
butterfly. Make a caterpillar and help your child choose the healthy
foods she would eat through in a week.
-- Jennfier Degnan, for SmarterKids.com
Try This!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Materials Needed: green construction paper, scissors, jar, old
magazines, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
Using a glass or bowl, trace circles onto green construction paper.
Young children may need help cutting out the circles, which should
then be overlapped slightly and glued together to create the
caterpillar. Have your child draw a face on the first circle, look
through magazines for pictures of the healthy foods they like to eat,
and glue one on each circle.
**Then you can also click on this link for a list of books,
toys/games, and arts/crafts pertaining to Butterflies.

2) SchoolExpress.com has free monthly theme units you can download.
Last month (I think) was the Butterflies unit. I loved that one!
There is a $1.00 charge for the past units, I think.
3) I found another idea on the FamilyEducation.com site. There are
MANY other activities for caterpillars and butterflies. Just do a
search on this website for "caterpillar, butterfly".
Alphabet Caterpillar by Jill Dvornik
What You'll Need:
· 14 sheets of construction paper
· Marker
· Brown paper bag
Help your child learn her ABC's!
What to Do:
Step One: Fold each piece of construction paper in half.
Step Two: On each half of the folded paper, cut out a circle about 4
inches wide.
Step Three: Write a letter of the alphabet in the middle of each
circle with the marker (you should have two circles left over).
Step Four: On one of the leftover circles, have your child draw the
caterpillar's face.
Step Five: Put the circles in the brown paper bag.
Step Six: When your child's ready to put her caterpillar together,
she can start picking circles out of the bag and spreading them out
on the table.
Step Seven: Arrange all the circles in alphabetical
order. The completed caterpillar will show the entire
alphabet with each letter in the right spot! You can repeat this as
often as you like, and even
make different caterpillars such as a vowel, consonant, or word caterpillar.
Becky got the following from this EXCELLENT SITE:
http://www.monarchwatch.org/garden/index.htm
4) How about the age-old idea of making a caterpillar from an egg
carton? Just take a styrofoam egg carton (they come in several
colors), or the old regular paper kind (you can color those with
crayons, paints, or markers). Use one 6-section strip for each
caterpillar. Color as desired. The styrofoam kind can be colored
also with markers or paints also, but test first. (Some paints and
markers sort of run and won't stick well to the foam.) Use pipe
cleaners for the antennae, you only need about 4 inches for each
antenna. Use small round pieces of black FELT, (or other color if
you want), for the eyes. You could also use scraps of colored FELT
to decorate the body of the caterpillar, using glue. Again, with the
foam cartons, check the glue first since some types don't stick well
after drying.
5) Another age-old activity is the round-head clothespin butterfly.
Twist a pipe cleaner around the indentation at the base of the
clothespin head for the antennae. Bend the ends outward just a bit.
Take a piece of bright colored scrap of fabric cloth or tissue paper
about 6-8 inches around, (you could use a square or a circle shaped
piece.) Then, slip it up into the legs of the clothespin to make the
wings. You can use a little bit of glue inside the clothespin before
slipping the fabric into it, to secure it. Then, use a marker to make
the eyes on the head of the clothespin.
6) Here's a different one. You can recycle some old little pieces of
crayons too! Make a butterfly shape from 2 pieces of waxed paper,
keeping the 2 pieces together. Children can peel off the paper from
the pieces of old crayons, then put into a ziplock plastic bag,
release the air out of the bag, and then seal it. Take a hammer and
carefully pound the bag of crayon pieces to break them up into
smaller pieces. Now place one of the butterfly shapes onto a sheet of
newspaper. Arrange the pieces of crayons onto the butterfly, add a
little glitter if desired, then cover with the other butterfly shape.
Now an adult will cover the butterfly with a sheet of newspaper, and
press with an iron set on Low, until all pieces are melted and the
edges are sealed.

Independent Story Teller Manager, Candace Darr, sent in the following
ideas. THANKS Candace!

Book suggestion: Usborne's First Nature; Butterflies and Moths ISBN#0860204774
How about cutting out a butterfly shape out of cardstock and tearing pieces
of colored tissue paper (the craft kind) and mixing glue with water to paste
the pieces down. use a paint brush to apply the glue. These are really pretty!
Make a butterfly garden

The next idea is from independent Story Teller distributor, Errin Brisbin
mailto:
ebbrisbin@...
Draw a butterfly on construction paper and then you could have your
child put some glitter glue or stickers on it. Use pipe cleaners for
the antennae and hang it in your child's room by the window or from
the ceiling.
×× ×× ×× ×× ××
Tricia Maline, independent Story Teller distributor, sent in the
following ideas:
mailto:
tm92907@... THANKS Tricia!
Butterfly Life Cycle:
Make a caterpillar using 4 bumps from an egg carton. Have the
children paint them and glue on wiggly eyes. Take a paper towel tube
and put the caterpillar inside the tube, representing a cocoon.
Discuss how long it takes the caterpillar to turn into a butterfly
(3 weeks) and mark it on a calendar when the caterpillar made the
cocoon. After 3 weeks, take the children's caterpillar and attach
tissue paper wings to it with a pipe cleaner. (Do this when the
children are not there.) When the children return they will discover
that their caterpillars have turned into butterflies.
Butterflies:
Paint one half of a butterfly pattern and then fold in half to make
the two halves symmetrical.
Snack:
Put cream cheese or peanut butter on a celery stalk.Attach pretzel
twists for the wings and pretzel sticks for the antenna.
×× ×× ×× ×× ××
Here are a few ideas from Nicole Martinez, independent Story Teller
distributor mailto:
nicole4felt@... THANKS Nicole!
The first one is a fingerplay:
A Caterpillar Crawled
A caterpillar crawled
(creep fingers up child's arm)
To the top of the tree.
"I think I'll take a nap," says he.
(place 1 hand over opposite fist)
So under a leaf he began to creep
to spin his cocoon.
And he fell asleep.
All winter long he slept in his bed
'Til spring came along one day and said
Wake up, wake up little sleepyhead,
(shake fist with other hand)
Wake up it's time to get out of bed."
So he opened his eyes that sunshiny day.
(spread fingers to hook thumbs)
Lo! He was a butterfly, and flew away!
Peanutbutterfly Sandwiches
Spread peanut butter and jelly onto bread. Cut out the shape of butterfly.
Add shoestring licorice for antennaes.
Butterfly Puppets
Cut butterflies out of construction paper. Paint 1 wing, then fold in 1/2
(to make wings look same). Paste pipe cleaners to make antennaes. Glue to a
tongue depressor for puppet or attach to fishing line and hang from ceiling.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Read the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Then use play food or felt food
to search and talk about different types of food. Pretend to feed a
caterpillar puppet or have child pretend to be the caterpillar. Have he or
she pretend to eat lots of food, roll up on the floor into a cocoon and then
come out and fly around the room as a butterfly.

This suggestion comes from independent Story Teller distributor, Shannon Peters
mailto:
shysmom@... THANKS Shannon!
This is not too crafty, but it's a great idea for Father's Day. Last year I
bought a little book for my kids to give to my Husband, it's called
"Butterfly Kisses". It is a collection of poems. In the front of the book I
wrote a little poem to him, from the kids and myself. He loved it. I guess
to make it crafty, you could have the kids write (or tell you what to write)
something special and a cut out butterfly for their Daddy.
Also, for learning about different butterflies, K-Mart has butterfly nets
that have each type of butter fly on it, so when you catch one, you can
match it up. The butterflies in Catalog would be great to match up to the
real thing.

POETRY AND FINGER PLAYS The following can be recited or sung while
displaying our Butterfly felt set pieces from the lifecycle of the
butterfly
http://www.funfelt.com/science.html
Birth of a Butterfly
(can be sung to the tune of Hush Little Baby, Don't Say a Word)
A mama butterfly lays all her eggs,
Out pops a caterpillar, crawling on its legs.
The caterpillar first is rather thin,
But then it eats till it bursts through its skin.
After growing nice and big,
The caterpillar climbs on a leaf or twig.
It makes a shell where it hangs insiede.
The shell then cracks, and teh parts divide.
Inside the shell, a change was going on,
The form of the caterpillar now is gone.
When the shell opens, what comes out?
A beautiful butterfly fluttering about!
Meish Goldish
×× ×× ×× ×× ××
Butterfly Cycle
(to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")
Hatch, hatch little egg,
I'm so very small.
Teeny tiny caterpillar,
You can't see me at all.
Crawl, caterpillar, crawl,
Munching on a leaf.
Crawling, munching, crawling, munching,
Eat and eat and eat.
Form, form chrysalis,
I'm a different shape;
Hanging by a silken thread
Until I can escape.
Rest, rest, chrysalis
While I change inside;
Now at last my time has come
To be a butterfly.
Stretch, stretch, pretty wings,
It's a special day;
Soon they will be strong enough
For me to fly away.
Fly, fly, butterfly,
Fly from flower to tree;
Find a place to lay my eggs
So they can grow like me.
Suzy Gazlay

The Butterfly song
(to the tune of "Up on the Housetop")
First comes a butterfly and lays an egg,
Out comes a caterpillar with many legs,
Oh see the caterpillar spin and spin,
A little chrysalis to sleep in.
Oh, oh ,oh wait and see
oh oh oh wait and see
Out of the chrysalis,my oh my
out comes a pretty butterfly.

Fuzzy wuzzy caterpillar in the garden creeps.
He spins himself a blanket and soon falls fast asleep.
Fuzzy wuzzy caterpillar wakes up by and by
To find he has wings of beauty, changed to a butterfly.

The Fuzzy Caterpillar
(to the tune of "The Eensy Weensy Spider")
The fuzzy caterpillar
Curled upon a leaf,
Spun her little chrysalis
And then fell asleep.
While she was sleeping,
She dreamed that she could fly,
And later when she woke up
She was a butterfly!

Butterfly, Butterfly
(to the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)
Butterfly, Butterfly,
Fly Away,
You were a caterpillar yesterday
Butterfly, Butterfly
You never stay,
Always flying to a new day.

Good Morning Butterfly
Way up in the sky
The butterflies fly.
While down in their nests
The butterflies rest.
With a wing to the left
And a wing to the right
The sweet little butterflies
Sleep all through the night.
SH-h-h-h they're sleeping.
The bright sun comes up.
The dew falls away.
Good morning, good morning
The butterflies say.

I'm a Butterfly...
(Pop Goes The Weasel)
I spin and spin my chrysalis,
Then I go rest inside.
When I come out,
I've changed indeed...
Look! I'm a butterfly!
