2012: What is Happening? Whitley Strieber
11/12/09
http://www.unknowncountry.com/journal/?id=393
I have gone on record as saying that I doubt that anything particularly
noteworthy will happen on December 21, 2012. However, this does not mean that I
don't think we are in an era of great change that is going to impact life on
earth profoundly. We are in such an era, and the changes are not simply of our
own making.
At the Dreamland Stargate, I gave a presentation that is now available as an
audio file in Unknowncountry.com's subcriber section in which I outlined
some of the most amazing changes that I have discovered.
Something has been happening recently that exemplifies what I talk about in that
presentation. In this case, asteroids have begun passing earth at close range
and, in one case so far, entering our atmosphere and exploding.
Something that has been estimated to happen every five years or so--an asteroid
of 10 feet in diameter or more passing close to earth--has just recently been
happening every few weeks. When added to all the other changes that we are
seeing that are related not to events on earth but to larger cosmic events, one
has to think that, whether the ancient world knew it or did not know it, we are,
in fact, in a time of great change.
So far, none of the asteroids that have come close to earth would have caused a
disaster if they had entered our atmosphere. To reach the ground or get near
enough to it to do damage, an asteroid needs to be relatively dense and at least
30 feet across.
Not to say that asteroids of this size would be all that dangerous even if they
did strike the planet. Certainly, given the density of human population,
somebody would experience effects from the strike of a small object. If a 40
foot asteroid struck a city, it would be a major disaster, for example. But it
would not change life on the scale of the 6 mile wide object that struck 65
million years ago and brought the age of dinosaurs to a close, or even the
Tunguska object, which was about a hundred feet across.
However, whatever is happening now, it is clear that the present asteroid swarm
does contain hundred foot objects, because one passed within 45,000 miles of
earth on March 2.
Last July, Jupiter was pummeled with large objects. In August, a substantial
object tore through one of Saturn's rings. At the same time, a large area in
Venus' cloud cover began glowing, suggesting either that there had been a
major impact that we did not detect, or that an enormous volcanic eruption was
taking place on the planet.
In my talk, I get into all the changes that are happening in the solar system
and why. Right now, it seems to me that it is worth facing the fact that the
solar system appears to have a much higher level of asteroid activity than
normal, and that this has significance for planet earth.
We have a number of near-earth-object programs. We need to really ramp up our
detection efforts and those programs, notoriously underfunded, need more money
and the equipment and observers that go with it.
So far, we have had at best just a day or so warning about the objects that have
been incoming. There was no warning at all of the one that exploded above
Indonesia. The one that passed on November 9 had just 15 hours warning.
The theory--or rather, hope--is that we would get more warning of a larger
object, say, one five hundred or a thousand feet across. At present, movie
fantasies aside, we have absolutely no way to do anything about such objects,
not without years of warning, and we will be lucky, frankly, if we get days.
What would happen if we did find a hundred foot object, say, a week out, would
be shocking indeed. We would be able to accurately calculate that it would hit
the earth, but not where. It would need to be just a short distance away before
we could be absolutely certain where it would hit. During the time between first
detection and final determination of the impact point, the entire planet would
have to wait as estimates became more and more secure.
Obviously, this could happen, and to pretend that there has been no increase in
the number of objects in the solar system recently is not appropriate.
Scientific institutions, however, have a tendency to fear controversy, and so
are unlikely to sound any sort of an alarm at the present time. So far, the few
news stories about these objects have taken each one to be a singular event, not
in context with the others.
I think that this is irresponsible. We are in a period of higher than average
asteroid activity in our solar system, and no matter how the data are massaged
to prove that there is no reason for concern, the fact is that the past two
years have seen an awful lot of impacts and close approaches, and the past few
months have been particularly notable.
So, what does this all have to do with the 2012 phenomenon? Frankly, I'm not
entirely sure, but I do find it peculiar and, frankly, a bit ominous, that
things like this are happening more and more the closer we get to the date that
a number of past civilizations associate with great change.
What could they possibly have known? How? From what we know, for example, of the
ancient Maya, there is almost zero possibility that they possessed a science
advanced enough to make a prophecy so astonishingly accurate.
If, however, somebody in the distant past had knowledge of exactly where our
solar system is in the cosmos, they might have been able to predict changes on
this scale with great accuracy. For example, if they knew that the debris from
an exploded star was racing toward us, they would be able to calculate with
great accuracy exactly when the various elements of the explosion--the fast
moving gamma rays and other energetic particles, the slower moving debris--would
hit us.
To do that, though, they would have had to have more than an ability to observe.
They would have needed to be able to penetrate deep space in order to meet the
leading edge of the expanding cloud before it could first be seen on earth,
which would be when it reached here.
Or would they? There is a book called "the Cycle of Cosmic
Catastrophes" that makes an interesting case that physical debris from a
supernova struck earth approximately 12,000 years ago, shattering the Laurentide
ice sheet and bringing the last ice age to an end. Subsequently, further
evidence of this impact has been found in various places, most recently on
islands off the coast of California.
Another book, called The Cosmic Winter, published about 10 years ago, contains
calculations that suggest that the Piscid, Orionid, Perseid and Taurid meteor
showers, two comets, Encke and Rudnicki, and the asteroids Hephaistos and
Oljato, all came from the same gigantic object, a huge cometary body that
entered our solar system about 20,000 years ago.
Debris from this body was probably responsible for the disaster that befell
earth 12,000 years ago, and, if people with sophisticated astronomical and
mathematical skills had been present on earth at that time, they would have been
able to make calculations similar to those made by Victor Clube and Bill Napier,
the authors of The Cosmic Winter, and perhaps, therefore, to accurately predict
when this debris field, which must be in some way moving in orbit around the
sun, might return.
But how could that be? When we look back 12,000 years, we certainly do not see
an earth populated by a great civilization with scientific skills on a par with
our own. To the contrary, we see a human species that has not yet even developed
agriculture, let alone anything approaching any science at all, let alone a
sophisticated science.
Or is that really true? Barbara Hand Clow wrote a most innovative book called
Catastrophobia that suggested that we received such a devastating blow at that
time that we are in a sort of state of amnesia about it, which explains the
curious inability of many scientists to face the fact that planetary
catastrophes have, far more than evolution, altered the course of life on earth,
and also that of human life.
We do know that the same disaster that extinguished most of the large ungulates
of North America also destroyed the entire Clovis culture, and that it was
thousands of years before human beings repopulated the continent.
We also know that there were substantial and very sudden changes then. The Gulf
Stream stopped flowing, and, as has recently been discovered, a Superstorm event
took place, causing further planetary disruption. (I pass over the fact that
science, which scorned me and Art Bell for identifying the fact that such storms
are possible, has now proved that they do happen.)
Sea levels also rose an average of 30 feet as the glacier collapsed, and
fantastic events took place, such as a phenomenal rush of water and debris into
the Gulf of Mexico and out along the US continental shelf. Any structures or
civilizations existing along the shores of the Pleistocene would have been
decisively destroyed. And, in fact, there is off the coast of India evidence of
a city that must have been submerged at least 9,000 years, which is described by
Graham Hancock in his book Underworld.
So it is possible that we did possess a greater civilization during the
Pleistocene. Obviously, it was not consumption-intensive like this one, or it
would have left more profound marks. But we already know that high levels of
materialism are not essential to mathematical skill, otherwise the Maya, who
lacked even the wheel, would not have been such expert astronomers and
mathematicians.
Did that civilization hand down a warning, that was preserved by the Maya and
some other cultures, in the form of calendars that suggest major changes around
this time? I think that this is certainly possible, and we do ourselves a
disservice to continue to ignore the inescapable fact that our solar system is
changing just at the time that the old predictions suggested that it would, and
that these changes might have profound effects on our lives and our future.
December 21, 2012 is a place-marker, I think, not a precise date. But it is
increasingly obvious that it does identify an era of change, and we do ourselves
a disservice if--no matter its origin--we continue to ignore it.
So, what is to be done? Hide in caves? Jump off a cliff as some idiot has
announced he is planning to do? Make a run on the freeze-dried food industry?
Hardly. To face change that is larger than we are, we need to begin by
acknowledging our fragility and also our value, and look within ourselves for
the strength we will need to survive.
12,000 years ago, if there was an advanced civilization on earth, it did not
survive. But mankind did survive, and that will happen again. They left us a
spiritual legacy that we continue to draw on to this day, even though we have
forgotten its origins.
We might leave a good deal more, because I believe that human civilization is
now much more extensive than it was then. If it existed then, it clung to the
coastlines of a planet that was teeming with animal life. It did not involve
huge populations, not like now.
Frankly, I think that, with care and determination, our civilization could
probably weather a disaster on the scale of what happened 12,000 years ago.
Clearly, we would take a substantial blow, but the survival would most likely be
rich enough to recreate civilization without the huge gap that took place last
time.
I wonder if our forebears knew this, too, which would be why many of the old
predictions also suggest that the period of change will end with a new
beginning, not a dark age?
This is the premise, at any rate, of my upcoming novel, "The Omega
Point," which is to be published in June. Like "Nature's
End," and "Superstorm," the book is already proving to be oddly
prophetic. It was written out of deep, profound hope and the expectation that
mankind has, in these past 5,000 years of development, crossed a threshold. If I
am right, we may well experience a tremendous catastrophe of some sort in the
relatively near future. If I am right, though, we will not lose so much as we
did the last time, and will carry forward this time with all we have gained on
our journey, and re-create civilization on a new foundation.
November 8, 2009 The Sixth night begins. "The most significant
transformation of consciousness in history"
... Human consciousness will continue to be transformed step by step in
accordance with this plan until we come to the real end date of the process of
creation, October 28, 2011. At this date the highest quantum state of the
universe will be attained (13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13 13 Ahau) when the shifts
disrupting the harmony will come to an end. Obviously, we are not there yet....

.... The Universal Era is about transformation and ascension. It will begin on
February 10, 2011 and will last a grand total of 260 days (October 28, 2011),
divide by the 13 phases of time, each creation day and night will be a short 20
days. In the Universal Era, those of you who have prepared your light bodies,
will be evolving into fully realized spiritual beings who understand your true
nature and the extent of your earthly powers. This is the moment we all came
here to witness and be a part of, our own forthcoming evolution and
transcendence which has taken 16.4 billion years to accomplish.

November 8, 2009, the beginning of the Sixth night of the Galactic Underworld
http://calleman.com/content/articles/nov8_sixth_night.htm
Before going into the specifics of the upcoming sixth night of the Galactic
Underworld, November 8, 2009 November 2, 2010, I feel I should clarify some of
my basic points of departure for understanding the Mayan calendar, since the
various ideas that are currently proposed for this vary significantly. There are
for instance those that believe that the end date of the Mayan calendar only
marks the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new.
On my own part I however think that we are approaching something much more
profound than just a point in a cycle that again will be repeated. Thus, there
is overwhelming empirical evidence that we are approaching a point in time when
nine evolutionary levels of the cosmic plan are simultaneously going to be
completed. This is in accordance with the only Mayan inscription from ancient
times, the Tortuguero monument, which describes what will happen at the end
date. This would imply that we are approaching not another cycle or another
shift, but the end to all shifts, something that all evolution has been a
preparation for and a build-up towards. Only such an end to all shifts would
conceivably provide the basis for a harmonious eternal peace on Earth.
What is about to transpire now is in other words not something that has ever
happened before in the history of the universe. Maybe this impending, partially
unknown, causes the widespread denial that I feel dominate many people at the
current moment. Rather than facing a tremendous change in our socioeconomic
relationships (since any change in human consciousness also implies a change in
our relationships) many prefer to fantasize about some physical or astronomical
event, that purportedly is going to happen on some specific date. In reality the
Mayan calendar is however not about something that will happen on a singular
date, but a description of a divine plan for the evolution of consciousness
where quantum shifts between calendrical energies bring about shifts in
consciousness.
Human consciousness will continue to be transformed step by step in accordance
with this plan until we come to the real end date of the process of creation,
October 28, 2011. At this date the highest quantum state of the universe will be
attained (13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13 13 Ahau) when the shifts disrupting the
harmony will come to an end. Obviously, we are not there yet.
In this plan for the evolution of consciousness we are now approaching the
sixth night of the Galactic Underworld, the eighth of the nine Underworlds,
which will begin on November 8, 2009. If my understanding of the Mayan calendar
is correct we will in this coming night be witnessing the most significant
transformation of consciousness ever in the history of mankind.
What is exciting about this is that a relatively clear picture of how a new
world may be born is now finally becoming evident. On the other hand, what is
also becoming increasingly clear is that this birth is likely to become very
demanding. For this reason it becomes all the more important to understand how
some of the difficulties ahead actually serve the delivery of this new world
even though it may not always seem that they do in the moment. If people can
gain a realistic understanding of how this new world will be born people may be
able to keep a hope for the future, which is based on something more than mere
wishful thinking. Unfortunately, much confusion reigns about the Mayan calendar
and many that present themselves as experts on this deny the ancient Mayan
knowledge that there are nine cosmic forces that are about to manifest, and that
it is these, and nothing else, that explains why a new world will be born.
Thus, what will happen in the time ahead cannot be understood from the sixth
night of the Galactic Underworld alone. The overlapping with the cycles
preparing for the ninth, and highest, level in the cosmic evolution scheme; the
Universal Underworld (see Figure) with the energy of the sixth night will also
need to be taken into consideration. Because of this overlapping, and the
speed-up of time associated especially with the latter Underworld, not only do I
think that the upcoming period will be unusually intense, but also energetically
quite complex.
At the time of this writing (October 26, 2009, 9 Lamat) we are still in the
latter part of the sixth day, the period of flowering in the process from seed
to mature fruit in the Galactic Underworld, which precedes the sixth night. As I
predicted in an earlier article some economists have now started to say that the
global economic recession (or the worst of it) is already over. There are
however certain things currently going on in the world that belies this and are
more in line with the prediction I made earlier of a further economic downturn,
especially expressed in a fall in the value of the US dollar, as the sixth night
begins. (November 8, 2009 is when the quantum shift in energy takes places in
the Heavens, but there is always an uncertainty as to when the new energy lands
in the world).

Chaotic Nodes and Dimensional Attunements ( the Hathors )
Chaotic Nodes
In one of our previous communications we discussed the concept of chaotic nodes.
From our perspective we believe you are on the cusp of one such node.
When predicting chaotic events, one is presented with an enigma, since by its
very nature chaos is unpredictable. Yet within the flow of chaotic events there
is a substructure that feeds the flow of chaos, as you experience it. Based upon
our understanding of this sub-structure (the quantum-field), we predict that a
Chaotic Node will manifest somewhere in the next 90 days.
In reality it could appear within hours of this message or weeks past the
window we have predicted. (Note: see previous Hathor message entitled, Chaotic
Nodes).
Nevertheless, regardless of the actual timing of this Chaotic Node, we believe
that it will present itself in multiple ways, involving international finance,
challenges to physical and mental health, planetary earth changes, including
earthquake and volcanic activity, and increased weather anomalies. All of these
events will strain the resources that your governments have to cope with such
things.
As we said previously, the nature of Chaotic Nodes is such that there are
multiple effects that cannot be predicted, and so we do not wish to address the
specific aspects of chaos that we believe will arise, but rather we wish to
discuss strategies for dealing with the chaos, energetically and spiritually.
We suggest you shift your perspective regarding chaos and view it not as an
inconvenience and a difficulty, but rather as an evolutionary catalyst. How such
events affect you resides in how you view them.
What we mean by this is that there is a tendency for human consciousness to get
stuck in a rut, to anticipate what things are going to be like, and to take
actions based upon those predictions. And for most people, when the reality does
not match expectation this creates great internal travail, and yet by the very
nature of Chaotic Nodes your predictive abilities collapse in the midst of
multiple probabilities.
For most persons, chaotic events generate a fear response, since the stability
that one counts on to predict appropriate action has seemingly disappeared. And
while fear is certainly an understandable response, it is only one of many
possible responses. Thus, we encourage you to train your mind to jump out of the
habitual rut of self-limitation and expectation, on a moment's notice,
whenever confronted with unexpected events.
From an energetic standpoint, what happens to you in a given situation has more
to do with your vibrational frequency, meaning the state of your consciousness,
than where you are physically located.
Thus, two people in the same location experiencing chaotic events can have
vastly different emotional responses. Whereas one person might be paralyzed with
fear, anger, and resentment, the other person might experience the moment as
humorous. He or she "gets" the cosmic joke, which is the sudden and
unexpected realization that the reality everyone experiences as "real"
is nothing more than the fabrication of their own minds.
When chaotic events disturb the status quo, a doorway briefly appears, an
opportunity if you will, to jump upward in consciousness, to wake up from the
dream spell. But waking up from the collective dream only occurs if you are
prepared to step across the threshold.
For a person who is prepared mentally and emotionally to embrace chaotic events
as evolutionary catalysts, the near future will be full of amusing incidents,
unexpected serendipity, and a feeling of waking up from a mass dream that has
gripped humanity for the last several thousand years.
So here is the line in the sand, so to speak. For those who wish to continue
blaming others for the problems they are facing, for those who would rather die
than wake up from the dream that they are collectively dreaming, this coming
Chaotic Node will be extremely difficult to contend with, and as we have said,
this is just the first of many such nodes to come. But for a person who has
embraced the idea that Chaotic Nodes are evolutionary catalysts, it will be a
different story.
Again, it is not where you are physically located that matters, it is your
vibratory frequency, the state of your consciousness.
In the past we have given many tools to assist you as you move through these
portals that are a necessary and unavoidable aspect to the ascent of earth and
humanity. Some of these methods we have shared involve sacred geometry. Some of
them involve emotional mastery and what we call "ecstasy and the
heart." We would suggest that you refer to these previous messages and work
with the tools we have given.
For although we have said it twice already, we shall say it a third time. It is
a fundamental principal we would like you to understand.
It does not matter where you are physically located. It is the state of your
vibratory frequency, your state of consciousness that matters most.
However we wish to turn our attention to a very simple method of shifting your
vibratory frequency.
When you are in what we call a "coherent vibratory frequency" you move
through chaotic events with a greater deal of mastery, heightened intuition, and
greater awareness of how you are creating the dream for yourself. These three
elements free consciousness and create a positive attractor, so that in the
midst of chaos you find the passageways (i.e. the right actions) that will lead
you through chaotic situations. This is the type of spiritual mastery that will
guide you through the coming times.
Although there are very sophisticated and complex coherent emotional states you
are capable of, we wish to speak to the simplest one. You would call it
"joy" or "appreciation." When you are in a state of joy or
appreciation, your vibratory frequency shifts and you are at the beginning of a
continuum of vibration that moves upward.
So however you do it, and there are many ways to do this, we encourage you to
choose joy and appreciation as the primary emotional tones you live in. This is
mental and emotional training, and we consider it vital to prepare for what is
coming your way.
Your culture hypnotizes you into believing that you must have a reason to feel
joy or appreciation, but we say to you as spiritual masters, you have the
ability to create this response regardless of what is happening around you.
In other words, you do not need a reason to feel joy or appreciation. If you
train yourself to move into, and live in, this vibratory realm, you will pass
through the coming chaotic times with a greater degree of mastery, heightened
intuition and unexpected serendipity.
Dimensional Attunements
We wish to share with you a gift of sound, what we call a Dimensional Attunement
to assist you through the energetic portal that the earth is now passing through

Renegade weatherman casts light on sunspot predictions
By Andrew Orlowski Posted in Environment, 29th October 2009
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/10/29/corbyn/
Piers Corbyn gave a glimpse into his methods of long-range weather forecasting
yesterday. Corbyn can claim an extraordinary degree of accuracy for predicting
extreme weather events. So much so, it makes the professionals look stupid.
Corbyn's WeatherAction is a successful private business, with farmers, big
insurance, and other serious players increasingly shunning the taxpayer-funded
Met Office in preference to his forecasts. He's been banned by the bookies
from betting on his own forecasts.
Clearly, something significant is going on. Corbyn has found a correlation, one
that has eluded the experts. So what's behind his SWT, or Solar Weather
Technique? Infuriatingly for supporters as well as critics, he won't publish
the details. But we know more today than we did yesterday, following a climate
conference he organised yesterday at Imperial College to help publicise SWT.
The Corbyn Method
"Standard meterology deals with transient events", he said.
"It's very good at doing a day ahead." [Are you sure? - ed]
"But these are easy questions. We want to solve harder ones."
For weather events, Corbyn identifies bursts of solar electromagnetic activity
he calls SWIPS. These can be predicted deterministically, he claims, although he
won't disclose his method.
The key is not the 11 year cycle, or even fluctuations in total solar irradiance
(TSI), but the 22 year Hale Cycle in sunspot activity, which indicates changes
in activity in solar wind. The team had also noticed a lunar modulation -
probably two factors. When the Moon was in the Earth's slipstream, its
elevation influenced the climate. There were also other magnetic factors. All
these influenced the jet stream, and in turn, weather.
Corbyn also said his team looked back at past weather events and found that most
fitted a similar pattern.
"Mathematically in phase space, states are nearly always repeated. Similar
states are (nearly) repeated at predictable times. It works because external
forcing factors are more important than internal weather noise (transients) on
reasonable time scales, of only about 4 days. The changes in energy flow are big
- that's why it actually works."
He said that he'd unconsciously adopted a quantum approach. "We
generate rules that enable us to look back. Harry Fairbrother, a technician at
Imperial College, came to one of my events - and he said, 'I think you do it
by quantum mechanics'. I said 'I do, but I don't think of it as
quantum mechanics.'"
In addition to an 85 per cent success rate, Corbyn's WeatherAction says it
can do more, but is hampered by resources.
"We can now do endgame forecasts for tropical storms - we can say what the
storm is going to do if there's a Red Spike."
"With modification of the computer equations of standard meteorology, a new
SWT-NWP [numerical weather prediction] approach could be developed to improve
and extend current TV weather forecasts to 10 days ahead, with the same accuracy
as we now have for 24 hours in advance. It requires changes in thinking,
investment, and a bit of imagination".
Corbyn earned a pre-emptive strike on Radio 4 from the BBC's environmental
activist Roger Harrabin, who helped rewrite the corporations's guidelines on
impartiality for green issues.
Harrabin was at the conference Corbyn organised yesterday. Much more on this in
a follow-up story.
Over the last year or so, Cosmic Awareness channelings have revealed the details
of exactly what will happen December 21, 2012. I have gathered most of the
question and answer sessions about this astounding Ascension event into a single
100-page free downloadable PDF file. I think you will find it as profound and
amazing as I have. You can download it here (and feel free to pass it on):

Giant Ribbon Discovered at the Edge of the Solar System
October 15, 2009:
For years, researchers have known that the solar system is surrounded by a vast
bubble of magnetism. Called the "heliosphere," it springs from the sun
and extends far beyond the orbit of Pluto, providing a first line of defense
against cosmic rays and interstellar clouds that try to enter our local space.
Although the heliosphere is huge and literally fills the sky, it emits no light
and no one has actually seen it.
Until now.
NASA's IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) spacecraft has made the first
all-sky maps of the heliosphere and the results have taken researchers by
surprise. The maps are bisected by a bright, winding ribbon of unknown origin:
Above: IBEX's all-sky map of energetic neutral atom emission reveals a
bright filament of unknown origin. V1 and V2 indicate the positions of the
Voyager spacecraft. [more]
"This is a shocking new result," says IBEX principal investigator Dave
McComas of the Southwest Research Institute. "We had no idea this ribbon
existed--or what has created it. Our previous ideas about the outer heliosphere
are going to have to be revised."

Cosmic Rays Hit Space Age High
September 29, 2009: Planning a trip to Mars? Take plenty of shielding. According
to sensors on NASA's ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer) spacecraft,
galactic cosmic rays have just hit a Space Age high.
"In 2009, cosmic ray intensities have increased 19% beyond anything
we've seen in the past 50 years," says Richard Mewaldt of Caltech.
"The increase is significant, and it could mean we need to re-think how
much radiation shielding astronauts take with them on deep-space missions."
Above: Energetic iron nuclei counted by the Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer on
NASA's ACE spacecraft reveal that cosmic ray levels have jumped 19% above
the previous Space Age high. [larger image]
The cause of the surge is solar minimum, a deep lull in solar activity that
began around 2007 and continues today. Researchers have long known that cosmic
rays go up when solar activity goes down. Right now solar activity is as weak as
it has been in modern times, setting the stage for what Mewaldt calls "a
perfect storm of cosmic rays."
"We're experiencing the deepest solar minimum in nearly a
century," says Dean Pesnell of the Goddard Space Flight Center, "so it
is no surprise that cosmic rays are at record levels for the Space Age."
Galactic cosmic rays come from outside the solar system. They are subatomic
particles--mainly protons but also some heavy nuclei--accelerated to almost
light speed by distant supernova explosions. Cosmic rays cause "air
showers" of secondary particles when they hit Earth's atmosphere; they
pose a health hazard to astronauts; and a single cosmic ray can disable a
satellite if it hits an unlucky integrated circuit.
The sun's magnetic field is our first line of defense against these
highly-charged, energetic particles. The entire solar system from Mercury to
Pluto and beyond is surrounded by a bubble of magnetism called "the
heliosphere." It springs from the sun's inner magnetic dynamo and is
inflated to gargantuan proportions by the solar wind. When a cosmic ray tries to
enter the solar system, it must fight through the heliosphere's outer
layers; and if it makes it inside, there is a thicket of magnetic fields waiting
to scatter and deflect the intruder.
Right: An artist's concept of the heliosphere, a magnetic bubble that
partially protects the solar system from cosmic rays. [larger image]
"At times of low solar activity, this natural shielding is weakened, and
more cosmic rays are able to reach the inner solar system," explains
Pesnell.
Mewaldt lists three aspects of the current solar minimum that are combining to
create the perfect storm:

Solar Cycle Driven by More than Sunspots; Sun Also Bombards Earth with
High-Speed Streams of Wind
September 17, 2009
BOULDER; Challenging conventional wisdom, new research finds that the number of
sunspots provides an incomplete measure of changes in the Sun's impact on
Earth over the course of the 11-year solar cycle.
The study, led by scientists at the High Altitude Observatory of the National
Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Michigan, finds
that Earth was bombarded last year with high levels of solar energy at a time
when the Sun was in an unusually quiet phase and sunspots had virtually
disappeared.
"The Sun continues to surprise us," says NCAR scientist Sarah Gibson,
the lead author. "The solar wind can hit Earth like a fire hose even when
there are virtually no sunspots...."

What to Expect On Dec. 21, 2012: The Moment of Ascension
(Excerpt from channeled message given by Cosmic Awareness in April 2009 - for more about Cosmic Awareness, see end of message.)
More on Earth's Rotation and the Days of Darkness
This Awareness is prepared to introduce a new understanding of what will occur during the time of Ascension, especially around the forecast date of December 21, 2012.
The Alignment of the 7 Planetary Gateways
From that which is the central sun of the galaxy, that which is Halcyon in the Pleiadian system, at that moment of the alignment of the 7 planetary gateways represented by the planets, the stars, there will be an alignment, a corridor directly from that which is the central planet to the planet earth. Earth is already moving forward towards this moment of alignment by adjusting and advancing many levels of consciousness, both in its own planetary consciousness as well as many of those Light Workers and Wanderers and beings who exist on the earthly plane at this time, and who have chosen to come onto the planet at this time to assist this process.
When the Portals Open a Tsunami of Energy Will Hit Our Planet
At that actual moment of complete alignment where the 7 gateways are opened, there will be an energetic force that will travel from the central sun to the planet earth, but the 7 gateways are the same gateways that the human soul either passes through as it descends into human form, or upon release of human form, passes through on the way to its greater expression of being. With the opening of these energy portals, these gateways, when the alignment occurs with the central sun, the force that will go through will be that force which will carry the planet to its higher frequencies. It will be as if a tsunami of energies that hit the planet at that time.
It is for this reason that it is necessary for those who will ascend to have raised their consciousness to a point so that when the energies hit, they will simply ride the wave and come to the new shoreline. In this time, events can occur such as a time of darkness, the shifting of the North/South poles, the shifting of the planet, the turning over of the planet. Those who are of that higher level of consciousness, that higher frequency, will not be destroyed by the tsunami of cosmic energies and consciousness that will overwhelm the planet. They will be carried upwards or forwards to that new state of consciousness, that new level of vibration and frequency.
Long Predicted Catastrophic Consequences Await the Masses
Those who do not achieve that higher level of consciousness that will allow them to surf this energy wave will be affected most negatively by it. It is at this time that the catastrophic consequences that have for so long been predicted by so many will indeed affect a majority of the beings on the planet. Many will at that time leave physical existence through the death experience. This will become their way of removing themselves for there is no wish on their part to experience that which will come, as those who survive this period of time experience the reality of a new physical world, that being the energies of that planet which this Awareness has called Planet B in the past. (Note: Planet B is the remaining physical 3D planet and Planet A is the 4D/5D planet that ascends – the planet will actually split into two different realities, frequencies and timelines.)
Those who choose to simply leave will reenter spirit form and it will be their choice whether to continue existence on that which is Planet A or Planet B or any other dimension that they choose, for it is the choice on the spirit level that is relevant to what experience one would have in whatever dimension of consciousness one would choose. They would thus be free to make whatever choice they would wish to make. Those who survive the catastrophic consequence of a planet stopping its rotation, of its poles shifting, of even the planet tipping over on its axis, will find that they truly do live in another reality than that which was the norm such a short time before.
The Coming Cosmic Tsunami and the Elite on Earth
All that was will have been swept away, and they will be reduced to a most basic and primitive state. There will be those who will anticipate this event, who will have prepared for this event, and those are the ones this Awareness has called the Elite in the past. They will have with them those who would serve them, those who would be party to that experience, but there will be many who survive at the most primitive level on a planet that no longer is as it once was. This too could be a consequence for those who wish to experience this form of reality of a cosmic tsunami that would hit and will hit the planet at that time, but it is only one of the consequences, for there are other ways that one will pass through this experience, either by leaving the physical or by ascending on the crest of the wave to that which is Planet A, the ascended higher level of consciousness.
This energy will be the purest energy of consciousness as it sweeps over the planet, but it will have at the same time, a direct physical result that if one is not fully prepared for, could have devastating consequences. This Awareness understands It has opened a new door at this time and It invites any and all further questions from those who would seek to understand this matter to an even higher degree.
Cosmic Awareness -- the force that expressed itself through Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Mohammed, Edgar Cayce and other great avatars who served as channels for what is commonly referred to as "God" -- communicates again today as the world begins to enter a period of Spiritual Ascension with a new consciousness and awareness. Cosmic Awareness communicates through several carefully trained channels who go deep into trance and interpret the energies and symbols that are expressed, putting them into human language.
SUDDEN SUPER SUNSPOT: Sunspot 1024 is crackling with B- and C-class solar flares. The activity is so intense, astronomers can't seem to take a picture of the sunspot without catching a flare in action. Pete Lawrence sends this example from his backyard observatory in Selsey, UK:
"Active region 1024 is putting on a fantastic show," says Lawrence. "The center of this region is incredibly bright and fluctuating."
Solar observers haven't seen an active region like this one in more than two years. It is big, complex, and rapidly growing: movie. The magnetic polarity of the sunspot, revealed by SOHO magnetograms, show that it is a member of new Solar Cycle 24. This makes sense: New research shows that solar jet streams are beginning to stimulate new-cycle sunspot production. Sunspot 1024 appears to be a sign of the process at work, heralding more to come. Monitoring is encouraged. more images: from ...." www.spaceweather.com
June 17, 2009: The sun is in the pits of a century-class solar minimum, and sunspots have been puzzlingly scarce for more than two years. Now, for the first time, solar physicists might understand why.
At an American Astronomical Society press conference today in Boulder, Colorado, researchers announced that a jet stream deep inside the sun is migrating slower than usual through the star's interior, giving rise to the current lack of sunspots.
Rachel Howe and Frank Hill of the National Solar Observatory (NSO) in Tucson, Arizona, used a technique called helioseismology to detect and track the jet stream down to depths of 7,000 km below the surface of the sun. The sun generates new jet streams near its poles every 11 years, they explained to a room full of reporters and fellow scientists. The streams migrate slowly from the poles to the equator and when a jet stream reaches the critical latitude of 22 degrees, new-cycle sunspots begin to appear.
Above: A helioseismic map of the solar interior. Tilted red-yellow bands trace solar jet streams. Black contours denote sunspot activity. When the jet streams reach a critical latitude around 22 degrees, sunspot activity intensifies. [larger image] [more graphics]
Howe and Hill found that the stream associated with the next solar cycle has moved sluggishly, taking three years to cover a 10 degree range in latitude compared to only two years for the previous solar cycle.
The jet stream is now, finally, reaching the critical latitude, heralding a return of solar activity in the months and years ahead.
"It is exciting to see", says Hill, "that just as this sluggish stream reaches the usual active latitude of 22 degrees, a year late, we finally begin to see new groups of sunspots emerging."
The current solar minimum has been so long and deep, it prompted some scientists to speculate that the sun might enter a long period with no sunspot activity at all, akin to the Maunder Minimum of the 17th century. This new result dispells those concerns. The sun's internal magnetic dynamo is still operating, and the sunspot cycle is not "broken."
Because it flows beneath the surface of the sun, the jet stream is not directly visible. Hill and Howe tracked its hidden motions via helioseismology. Shifting masses inside the sun send pressure waves rippling through the stellar interior. So-called "p modes" (p for pressure) bounce around the interior and cause the sun to ring like an enormous bell. By studying the vibrations of the sun's surface, it is possible to figure out what is happening inside. Similar techniques are used by geologists to map the interior of our planet.
In this case, researchers combined data from GONG and SOHO. GONG, short for "Global Oscillation Network Group," is an NSO-led network of telescopes that measures solar vibrations from various locations around Earth. SOHO, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, makes similar measurements from Earth orbit.
"This is an important discovery," says Dean Pesnell of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. "It shows how flows inside the sun are tied to the creation of sunspots and how jet streams can affect the timing of the solar cycle."
There is, however, much more to learn.
"We still don't understand exactly how jet streams trigger sunspot production," says Pesnell. "Nor do we fully understand how the jet streams themselves are generated."
To solve these mysteries, and others, NASA plans to launch the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) later this year. SDO is equipped with sophisticated helioseismology sensors that will allow it to probe the solar interior better than ever before.
Right: An artist's concept of the Solar Dynamics Observatory. [more]
"The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on SDO will improve our understanding of these jet streams and other internal flows by providing full disk images at ever-increasing depths in the sun," says Pesnell.
Continued tracking and study of solar jet streams could help researchers do something unprecedented--accurately predict the unfolding of future solar cycles. Stay tuned for that!
Allegedly, according to Hurtak, says during his contact, he was told our star system is headed into a vacuum area in space referred to as a 'Null Zone', where electromagnetic fields cease to exist.
Entering through this supposed Null Zone will re-seed our star system closer to the center of our local universe. The Milky Way. In addition, we'll step up an octave or two resettling in a fifth dimensional wavelength of life, where species are circumnavigating space.
I think in these higher vibratory time cells is where our visiting Adamic intelligence reside. By that, I mean, the ones who earlier visited us in the 50's. Apparently, they're able to transpose themselves into lower vibrational dimensions.
Those whose origins began in the lower thresholds who haven't been tampered with by the Higher Evolutions aren't able to transpose into the higher life zones.
Why is tampering neccessary? The higher vibratory spaces are supposedly, protected by special radiation's of the Creator. The radiation helps protect against intrusive negative intelligence.
And of course, it's conveyed as we approach the lip of this Null Zone, it affects our Sun. These intelligence have been busy keeping her (the sun) stable [eg. record minimum sunspot activity] to help reduce the radical effect it'd cause with our planet due to the extra bombardment's of solar radiation kicked off during this transition.
Researchers were stunned to discover recently that Earth is losing more of its atmosphere than Venus and Mars, which have negligible magnetic fields.
This may mean our planet's magnetic shield may not be as solid a protective screen as once believed when it comes to guarding the atmosphere from an assault from the sun.
"We often tell ourselves that we are very fortunate living on this planet because we have this strong magnetic shield that protects us from all sorts of things that the cosmos throws at us -- cosmic rays, solar flares and the pesky solar wind," said Christopher Russell, a professor of geophysics and space physics at the University of California, Los Angeles. "It certainly does help in some of those areas but ... in the case of
the atmosphere, this may not be true," he said.
Russel and others came to this realization while meeting at a comparative planetology conference last month.
"Three of us who work on Earth, Venus and Mars got together and compared notes," Russell told Discovery News. "We said, 'Oh my goodness -- what we've been telling people about the magnetic shield is not correct.'"
The perpetrators are streams of charged particles blasting off the sun in what is known as the solar wind.
"The interaction of solar wind with Venus and Mars is pretty simple," Russell said. "The wind comes in, carries a magnetic field, which wraps around the ionosphere of the planet. The ionosphere is basically dragged away." Earth's magnetic field interacts with the solar wind, drawing out energy that gets funneled into the planet's atmosphere along its magnetic field lines.
"The wind has to flow around this large magnetic obstacle in its path," Russell said. "The two are not friction-free."
In addition to triggering aurorae, the process causes Earth's atmosphere to heat up to the point where atmospheric gases can escape along the field lines, where they are then picked up by the solar wind.
"The visible manifestation of geomagnetic activity is the aurora -- the sun interacts with magnetosphere and causes it to glow -- but there are other things that go on when the particles interact with the atmosphere," said Scott Bailey, with the Center for Space Science and Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
Despite the rather mind-boggling rate at which Earth is losing atmosphere -- 5×10tothe25 molecules per second -- scientists say there is no cause for alarm. If the loss rate stays the same, the planet's atmosphere will last for several more billion years.
"Ultimately we're trying to understand why Venus, Mars and Earth atmospheres behave so different when initially the planets were pretty much the same," Russell said.
Russell presented his research at the American Geophysical Union conference in Toronto last week. He and his colleagues are working on paper that details the comparative atmospheric losses of Earth, Venus and Mars.
THE SUN IS STIRRING: NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft is monitoring an active region hidden behind the sun's eastern limb. On May 5th, it produced an impressive coronal mass ejection (CME, movie) and a burst of Type II radio emissions caused by a shock wave plowing through the sun's outer atmosphere. STEREO-B's extreme UV telescope captured this image during the explosion:
At the root of all this activity is probably a sunspot. Its high latitude identifies it as a member of new Solar Cycle 24. The putative sunspot is not yet visible from Earth, but the sun is turning the region toward us for a better view. Readers with solar telescopes should keep an eye on sun's northeastern limb for an emergence on May 7th or 8th

The cataclysmic explosion of a giant star early in the history of the Universe is the most distant single object ever detected by telescopes. The colossal blast was picked up first by Nasa's Swift space observatory which is tuned to see the high-energy gamma-rays emitted from extreme events.
Other telescopes then followed up the signal, confirming the source to be more than 13 billion light-years away.
Scientists say the star's destruction probably resulted in a black hole.
"This gets us into a realm where we've never been before," said Nial Tanvir, of the University of Leicester, UK.
"This is the most remote gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever detected, and also the most distant object ever discovered."
Fast mover
The Swift satellite was launched in 2004 to investigate the energetic flashes that characterise some of the Universe's most violent happenings.
A GAMMA-RAY BURST RECIPE
Models assume GRBs arise when giant stars burn out and collapse
During collapse, super-fast jets of matter burst out from the stars
Collisions occur with gas already shed by the dying behemoths
The interaction generates the energetic signals detected by Swift
Remnants of the huge stars end their days as black holes
Led by the US space agency, the mission has significant UK and Italian contributions. It is a three-in-one observatory. Its Burst Alert Telescope is set up to catch the initial flood of gamma rays. The spacecraft then swings itself to look directly into the flash with X-ray and ultraviolet/visible telescopes.
This longer wavelength afterglow lasts on the order of hours to days and Swift also calls up ground-based observatories to join the spectacle. Indeed, it is the ground campaign that establishes the distance.
This burst, dubbed GRB 090423, was detected by Swift on 23 April.
Follow-up observations were led by the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope and the Gemini North Telescope, both on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Cosmic expansion
Analysis of the light spectrum confirmed the blast had a redshift of 8.2. Redshift is a measure of the degree to which light has been "stretched" by the expansion of the Universe. The greater the redshift, the more distant the object and the earlier it is being seen in cosmic history.
The figure 8.2 equates to a distance of 13.035 billion light-years. Put another way, the explosion is being viewed when the Universe was only 630 million years old, a mere one-20th of its current age (estimated to be 13.7 billion years old).
The previous record holder was a GRB witnessed, also by Swift, in September 2008. It had a redshift of 6.7, making it 190 million light-years closer than GRB 090423.
Scientists have seen what they believe may be faint galaxies at redshifts 8-10, but their true nature is still being investigated.
Researchers are very keen to probe these great distances because they will learn how the early Universe evolved, and that will help them explain why the cosmos looks like it does now.
'Fried' gas
Scientists believe the super-hot conditions that existed after the Big Bang eventually cooled sufficiently to allow protons, neutrons and electrons to form neutral atoms of hydrogen and helium.
When the first stars formed, from infalling clouds of hydrogen and helium, they lit up the cosmos.
What is more, these hot, young stars produced so much intense ultraviolet radiation, they "fried" the gas around them - tearing electrons off neutral atoms to leave the diffuse plasma we detect between the stars even today.
The star which ended its days as GRB 090423 was very probably among that early population of giants responsible for this re-ionisation. Dr Tanvir said: "The re-ionisation era was a change that occurred in the Universe when the first stars switched on; but the actual timescale for that and the processes at work are poorly understood because we have so few observations. We're now pushing into that epoch."
Professor Gerry Gilmore, from Cambridge University, UK, commented: "[This] was probably one of the first stars that ever formed in the Universe; and it will have been one of the first things that ever created stuff like carbon, nitrogen and oxygen that led then to normal stars like our Sun and the planets forming much, much later on.
"This is really a crucial stage of the Universe. The fact that we can see that long ago is just astonishing," he told BBC News.
It might not look like much, but this image represents one of the most distant objects astronomers have ever seen, 12.9 billion light years away.
It is a "Lyman-alpha blob" and is 55,000 light years across - as large as present-day galaxies.
Though younger such blobs have been found, "Himiko" confounds the idea that such large objects grew more recently by the merger of smaller ones.
The research will be published in the Astrophysical Journal.
Current cosmology models hold that between 200 million and one billion years after the Big Bang, the first colossal stars formed, emitting radiation that stripped light elements of their electrons and turned the Universe into a soup of charged particles.
Only after this "re-ionisation epoch" did matter as we now know it really start to clump together.
"A number of theories of Lyman-alpha blob formation abound, but all are difficult to test"
Objects as big as modern-day galaxies should have taken significant time to build up from mergers of smaller chunks of matter. So when a group of researchers led by Masami Ouchi at the Carnegie Institution searched among 207 distant galaxy candidates using the Subaru telescope at the peak of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, they expected to find smaller galaxies. "We hesitated to spend our precious telescope time by taking spectra of this weird candidate," Dr Ouchi said.
"We never believed that this bright and large source was a real distant object."
Massive mystery
The team went on to measure the characteristic emission from hydrogen - the Lyman-alpha radiation of the name - and confirmed the blob was some 12.9 billion light years away. They then trained the Spitzer Space Telescope, Very Large Array and UK Infrared Telescope on the object to determine how much mass is contained in the blob - or, rather, how much was contained 12.9 billion years ago. Himiko - named after a mysterious queen of Chinese and Japanese legend - contains more than 10 times as much mass as galaxies of a similar age.
"There are two possibilities: the standard scenario of galaxy formation is wrong, or this particular object is showing something unique," Dr Ouchi told BBC News.
A range of possibilities could explain the massive nature of Himiko: it could have a supermassive black hole at its centre, or perhaps it is a single giant galaxy with a large mass of about 40 billion Suns.
Dr Ouchi said the team was proposing observations using the Keck telescope in the far-infrared region to establish the rate of star formation happening inside Himiko, and whether star formation could lead to the "nebula" of ionised gas that accounts for its enormous size.
"Many early theories of galaxy formation predicted a Lyman-alpha 'fuzz' around early galaxies," said James Geach, an astronomer at the University of Durham who works on Lyman-alpha blobs.
"The problem is that no-one is entirely sure what mechanism gives rise to the extended emission; a number of theories of Lyman-alpha blob formation abound, but all are difficult to test," he told BBC News.
"We now have several good models that seem to do a good job of reproducing many qualities of the observable Universe.
"There is room for improvement however, and explaining these Lyman-alpha blobs is a prime example."
Both Dr Ouchi and Dr Geach agree that future "wide-field" searches that scan larger swathes of the sky are likely to uncover many more such extended blobs.
But, Dr Geach added, "until we know more about their physics, their connection to the formation of galaxies, and perhaps most importantly their lifetimes, we don't really know how they fit in".
Something serious is happening in the cosmos. Have a look at the magnetosphere. It appears the fields are reversed or non-existent. No magnetosphere is something we have been warned about (there has been a huge hole in it for a few years now) and it really does appear to be so:
Looks like Earth's charge is running down. No new current is flowing in. Blue lines should be on top and red lines on bottom, such as the magnetic field should dictate.
But they are not in such a way. The polarity is going the opposite way.
Should also be noted that there were many Gamma Ray Bursts today (10 in the past 7 days):
http://grb.sonoma.edu/index.php
And now this:
COSMOS IS FALLING: The first fragments of shattered satellite Cosmos 2251 are about to reenter Earth's atmosphere. According to US Strategic Command, fragment 1993-036PX will reenter on March 12th, followed by 1993-036KW on March 28th and 1993-036MC on March 30th. These are probably centimeter-sized pieces that will disintegrate in the atmosphere, posing no threat to people on the ground.
Cosmos 2251 was shattered on Feb. 10th when it collided with another satellite, Iridium 33. Cosmos 2251 possessed about one and a half times more mass than Iridium 33 and to date appears to have produced more than twice the number of fragments.
AND IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH, CNN has reported that there has been an evacuation of the International Space Station. Of course, within minutes they said evacuation is cancelled but I don't think so. Hopi Prophecy says something about when the ISS falls, that is the last sign.
'Dark' comets happen when the water on their surface has evaporated, causing them to reflect less light
The comets, of which there could be thousands, are not currently monitored by observatories and space agencies.
Most comets and asteroids are monitored in case they start to travel towards earth.
But Bill Napier, from Cardiff University, said that many could be going by unnoticed.
"There is a case to be made that dark, dormant comets are a significant but largely unseen hazard," he said
Scientists estimate that there should be around 3,000 comets in the galaxy, but only 25 have so far been identified.
"Dark" comets happen when the water on their surface has evaporated, causing them to reflect less light.
Astronomers have previously spotted comets heading towards earth just days before they passed.
In 1983 a comet called IRAS-Araki-Alcock passed at a distance of just 5 million kilometres, the closest of any comet for 200 years, but it was noticed just a fortnight beforehand.
Tests on another comet, called Comet Borrelly, in 2001 revealed it to have large dark patches across much of its surface.
Steve Larson of the University of Arizona's Catalina Sky Survey in Tucson, which monitors comets, said the idea of an unknown number of "dark" comets circling earth had "merit".
But Clark Chapman from the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, said that such comets "would absorb sunlight very well" and so could be detected by the heat they emit, reports New Scientist magazine.
Scientists Worry We Aren't Prepared for Event That Could Zap Government, Cost Trillions
By DAVID KERLEY Jan. 9, 2009 ā€"
U.S. scientists worry we aren't ready for a solar space storm that could knock out our electricity, our cell phones, even our water supply.
The chances of that happening are small, but it is a possibility as we move into an active period of solar storms.
How do they know? Well, it's happened before. Back in 1859, a solar eruption resulted in telegraph wires burning up.
Of course, the world is now covered in wires and wireless devices that could be vulnerable. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) gathered experts from around the country to look at the economic and social costs from these space storms. While they didn't make any recommendations, the scientists hope their report is a wake-up call.
"We're not trying to be alarmist," said Dan Baker, who is the lead author of the report, "but we are trying to show how our systems are interconnected."
The sun is on a fairly regular schedule. Every 11 years, solar activity flares up. The next "maximum" active period is expected in 2012. During those active times, the sun spits billions of tons of matter toward Earth that can cause electromagnetic storms that interfere with just about all of our electronic systems.
How bad would the "Katrina Space Storm" be for us earthlings? Well, the NAS report suggests the storm could cascade through our modern world.
First, the electric grid would be vulnerable, and could be shut down. It's the first big domino that, the report says, could lead to "disruption of the transportation, communication, banking, and finance systems, and government services; the breakdown of the distribution of potable water owing to pump failure; and the loss of perishable foods and medications because of lack of refrigeration."
Not a pretty picture. The scientists say if even one region or country is affected, the problems could spread to the rest of the world. If you thought Katrina was expensive, this space storm would dwarf it. The report estimates "$1 trillion to $2 trillion during the first year alone ... for the societal and economic costs of a 'severe geomagnetic storm scenario' with recovery times of four to 10 years."
Might Have to Go Analog
Satellites and GPS systems could be knocked out.
As ABC's Clayton Sandell has written for this site before: "Solar storms could make GPS receivers unable to lock onto a satellite signal, rendering them useless. The effect could last for minutes or more than a day. You may be reduced to -- gasp -- stopping to ask for directions."
"The civilian use of GPS has really taken off only in the last few years, so we really do expect to see a much wider impact in this upcoming cycle," said Douglas Biesecker, a solar physicist at the Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado, run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Sales of so-called personal navigation devices -- those manufactured by companies like Magellan and Garmin, for example -- have skyrocketed in recent years. In 2004, worldwide sales of GPS units were about 2 million. By 2007, that number had jumped to about 27 million, according to technology analysts at ABI Research.
A failure of the GPS system could have serious ramifications for flying. The Federal Aviation Administration is trying to move to an air traffic control system based on GPS. But the country is not making a lot of plans for the next big solar storm.
"Our society isn't geared toward dealing with these kinds of possibilities," said Baker, referring to the fact that a huge solar storm is a rare occurrence. "We are more concerned with short-term possibilities."
Solar weather isn't like the weather here on Earth. Meteorologists can track a storm for days and give residents plenty of warning of what is coming. That's not the case with space weather.
"We can't predict [a coming space storm] with any great lead time of accuracy," Baker said. What he and his colleagues can predict is that we are not ready for "the big one" when it comes to solar storms.
18 Billion Suns - Biggest Black Hole in Universe Discovered and it's BIG!
A Galaxy Classic
Whatever gave birth to this monster can be real proud. The biggest black hole in the universe weighs in with a respectable mass of 18 billion Suns, and is about the size of an entire galaxy. Just like in the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito flick Twins, the massive black hole has a puny twin hovering nearby. By observing the orbit of the smaller black hole, astronomers are able to test Einstein's theory of general relativity with stronger gravitational fields than ever before.
The biggest black hole beats out its nearest competitor by six times. Fortunately, its 3.5 billion light years away, forming the heart of a quasar called OJ287. Quasars are extremely bright objects in which matter spiraling into a giant black hole emits large amounts of radiation.
The smaller black hole, which weighs about 100 million Suns, orbits the larger one on an oval-shaped path every 12 years. It comes close enough to punch through the disc of matter surrounding the larger black hole twice each orbit, causing a pair of outbursts that make OJ287 suddenly brighten.
General relativity predicts that the smaller hole's orbit itself should rotate over time, so that the point at which it comes nearest its neighbor moves around in space. This effect is seen in Mercury's orbit around the Sun, on a much smaller scale.
In the case of OJ287, the tremendous gravitational field of the larger black hole causes the smaller black hole's orbit to precess at an impressive 39° each orbit. The precession changes where and when the smaller hole crashes through the disc surrounding its larger sibling.
About a dozen of the resulting bright outbursts have been observed to date, and astronomers led by Mauri Valtonen of Tuorla Observatory in Finland have analysed them to measure the precession rate of the smaller hole's orbit. That, along with the period of the orbit, suggests the larger black hole weighs a record 18 billion Suns.
So just how big can these bad boys get? Craig Wheeler of the University of Texas in Austin, US, says it depends only on how long a black hole has been around and how fast it has swallowed matter in order to grow. "There is no theoretical upper limit," he says.
The most recent outburst occurred on 13 September 2007, as predicted by general relativity. "If there was no orbital decay, the outburst would have been 20 days later than when it actually happened," Valtonen told New Scientist, adding that the black holes are on track to merge within 10,000 years.
Wheeler says the observations of the outbursts fit closely with the expectations from general relativity. "The fact that you can fit Einstein's theory [so well] ... is telling you that that's working," he says.
There is a giant black hole at the centre of our galaxy, a study has confirmed.
German astronomers tracked the movement of 28 stars circling the centre of the Milky Way, using two telescopes in Chile. The black hole is four million times more massive than our Sun, according to the paper in The Astrophysical Journal. Black holes are objects whose gravity is so great that nothing - including light - can escape them.
According to Dr Robert Massey, of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), the results suggest that galaxies form around giant black holes in the way that a pearl forms around grit.
'The black pearl'
Dr Massey said: "Although we think of black holes as somehow threatening, in the sense that if you get too close to one you are in trouble, they may have had a role in helping galaxies to form - not just our own, but all galaxies.
"The most spectacular aspect of our 16-year study, is that it has delivered what is now considered to be the best empirical evidence that super-massive black holes do exist" Professor Reinhard Genzel
Head of the research team
"They had a role in bringing matter together and if you had a high enough density of matter then you have the conditions in which stars could form.
"Thus the first generation of stars and galaxies could have come into existence". The researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany said the black hole was 27,000 light years, or 158 thousand, million, million miles from the Earth. "Undoubtedly the most spectacular aspect of our 16-year study, is that it has delivered what is now considered to be the best empirical evidence that super-massive black holes do really exist," said Professor Reinhard Genzel, head of the research team.
"The stellar orbits in the galactic centre show that the central mass concentration of four million solar masses must be a black hole, beyond any reasonable doubt."
Observations were made using the 3.5m New Technology Telescope and the 8.2m Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. Both are operated by the European Southern Observatory (Eso).

LOS ALAMOS, N.M., November 24, 2008 —
Milagro Observatory unveils something never before seen from Earth
A Los Alamos National Laboratory cosmic-ray observatory has seen for the first time two distinct hot spots that appear to be bombarding Earth with an excess of cosmic rays. The research calls into question nearly a century of understanding about galactic magnetic fields near our solar system.
Joining an international team of collaborators, Los Alamos researchers Brenda Dingus, Gus Sinnis, Gary Walker, Petra Hüntemeyer and John Pretz published the findings today in Physical Review Letters.
The source of cosmic rays has been a 100-year-old problem for astrophysicists,¯ Pretz said. With the Milagro observatory, we identified two distinct regions with an excess of cosmic rays. These regions are relatively tiny bumps on the background of cosmic rays, which is why they were missed for so long. This discovery calls into question our understanding of cosmic rays and raises the possibility that an unknown source or magnetic effect near our solar system is responsible for these observations.¯
Cosmic rays are high-energy particles that move through our Galaxy from sources far away. No one knows exactly where cosmic rays come from, but scientists theorize they might originate from supernovae "massive stars that explode€" from quasars or perhaps from other exotic, less-understood or yet-to-be-discovered sources within the universe.
Researchers used Los Alamos Milagro cosmic-ray observatory to peer into the sky above the northern hemisphere for nearly seven years starting in July 2000. The observatory is unique in that it monitors the entire sky above the northern hemisphere. Because of its design and field of view, Milagro was able to record over 200 billion cosmic-ray collisions with the Earths atmosphere.
Our observatory is unique in that we can detect events of low enough energies that we were able to record enough cosmic-ray encounters to see a statistically significant fractional excess coming from two distinct regions of the sky, ¯ Dingus said.
Because cosmic rays are charged particles, magnetic fields from the Milky Way and our solar system change the flight paths of the particles so much that researchers had not been able to pinpoint their exact origin. Consequently, traditional wisdom has held that cosmic-ray events appear uniformly throughout the sky.
But because Milagro was able to record so many cosmic-ray events, researchers for the first time were able to see statistical peaks in the number of cosmic-ray events originating from specific regions of the sky near the constellation Orion. The region with the highest hot spot of cosmic rays is a concentrated bulls eye above and to the right visually of Orion, near the constellation Taurus. The other hot spot is a comma-shaped region visually occurring near the constellation Gemini.
The researchers created a graphic depiction of the hot spots that makes them appear as a pair of red cosmic rashes in a field of stars.
Milagro scientists are currently working with researchers in Mexico to build a second-generation observatory known as the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) experiment. If built, the HAWC observatory could help researchers solve the mystery of cosmic-ray origin.
In addition to the Los Alamos Milagro team, collaborators include nearly three dozen researchers from the following institutions: Naval Research Laboratory; University of California-Santa Cruz; University of Maryland; University of California-Irvine; George Mason University; New York University; Instituto de Astronomia, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico; Michigan State University; NASA Goddard Space Flight Center; University of New Hampshire.
Funding for the research came from the U.S. Department of Energys Office of High-Energy Physics and Office of Nuclear Physics; Los Alamos National Laboratorys Laboratory-Directed Research and Development fund and the Laboratorys Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics; and the National Science Foundation.

During the time it takes you to read this article, something will happen high overhead that until recently many scientists didn't believe in. A magnetic portal will open, linking Earth to the sun 93 million miles away. Tons of high-energy particles may flow through the opening before it closes again, around the time you reach the end of the page.
"It's called a flux transfer event or 'FTE,'" says space physicist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. "Ten years ago I was pretty sure they didn't exist, but now the evidence is incontrovertible."
Indeed, today Sibeck is telling an international assembly of space physicists at the 2008 Plasma Workshop in Huntsville, Alabama, that FTEs are not just common, but possibly twice as common as anyone had ever imagined.
Researchers have long known that the Earth and sun must be connected. Earth's magnetosphere (the magnetic bubble that surrounds our planet) is filled with particles from the sun that arrive via the solar wind and penetrate the planet's magnetic defenses. They enter by following magnetic field lines that can be traced from terra firma all the way back to the sun's atmosphere.
"We used to think the connection was permanent and that solar wind could trickle into the near-Earth environment anytime the wind was active," says Sibeck. "We were wrong. The connections are not steady at all. They are often brief, bursty and very dynamic."
Several speakers at the Workshop have outlined how FTEs form: On the dayside of Earth (the side closest to the sun), Earth's magnetic field presses against the sun's magnetic field. Approximately every eight minutes, the two fields briefly merge or "reconnect," forming a portal through which particles can flow. The portal takes the form of a magnetic cylinder about as wide as Earth.
The European Space Agency's fleet of four Cluster spacecraft and NASA's five THEMIS probes have flown through and surrounded these cylinders, measuring their dimensions and sensing the particles that shoot through. "They're real," says Sibeck.
Now that Cluster and THEMIS have directly sampled FTEs, theorists can use those measurements to simulate FTEs in their computers and predict how they might behave. Space physicist Jimmy Raeder of the University of New Hampshire presented one such simulation at the Workshop.
He told his colleagues that the cylindrical portals tend to form above Earth's equator and then roll over Earth's winter pole. In December, FTEs roll over the north pole; in July they roll over the south pole.
Sibeck believes this is happening twice as often as previously thought. "I think there are two varieties of FTEs: active and passive."
Active FTEs are magnetic cylinders that allow particles to flow through rather easily; they are important conduits of energy for Earth's magnetosphere. Passive FTEs are magnetic cylinders that offer more resistance; their internal structure does not admit such an easy flow of particles and fields. (For experts: Active FTEs form at equatorial latitudes when the IMF tips south; passive FTEs form at higher latitudes when the IMF tips north.)
Sibeck has calculated the properties of passive FTEs and he is encouraging his colleagues to hunt for signs of them in data from THEMIS and Cluster. "Passive FTEs may not be very important, but until we know more about them we can't be sure."
There are many unanswered questions: Why do the portals form every 8 minutes? How do magnetic fields inside the cylinder twist and coil? "We're doing some heavy thinking about this at the Workshop," says Sibeck.
Meanwhile, high above your head, a new portal is opening, connecting your planet to the sun.
LONDON: The protective bubble around the sun that helps to shield the Earth from harmful interstellar radiation is shrinking and getting weaker, NASA scientists have discovered. New data from the Ulysses deep-space probe show that the heliosphere, the protective shield of energy that surrounds our solar system, has weakened by 25 per cent over the past decade and is now at it lowest level since the space race began 50 years ago.
Scientists, baffled at what could be causing the barrier to shrink in this way, were set to launch a mission overnight to study the heliosphere. The Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or Ibex, will orbit 240,000 kilometres above the Earth and "listen" for the shock wave that forms as our solar system meets interstellar radiation. Dr Nathan Schwadron, a co-investigator on the Ibex mission at Boston University, said: "There is a very high-energy galactic radiation that is dangerous to living things.
"Around 90 per cent of [it] is deflected by our heliosphere, so the boundary protects us from this harsh galactic environment." The heliosphere is created by the solar wind meeting the intergalactic gas that fills the gaps in space between solar systems. Where they meet, a shock wave is formed that deflects interstellar radiation away from the solar system as it travels through the galaxy. The scientists hope Ibex will enable them to better understand what happens at this boundary.
If the heliosphere continues to weaken, it is feared intergalactic cosmic radiation reaching Earth will increase, disrupting electrical equipment, damaging satellites and potentially harming life. Telegraph, London

NASA to Discuss Mission to Study Sun's Weakening Protective Bubble
PRESS RELEASE Date Released: Thursday, October 16, 2008
Source: Goddard Space Flight
GREENBELT, Md. -- NASA will hold a media teleconference on Friday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m. EDT, to preview the Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, mission. The spacecraft may confirm if the sun's protective bubble surrounding our solar system, called the heliosphere, is about to shrink and weaken. IBEX also will be the first spacecraft to image and map the dynamic interactions taking place where the hot solar wind slams into the cold expanse of space.
The heliosphere acts as a shield for our solar system, warding off most of the galactic cosmic rays. Recent data indicate the solar wind's global pressure is the lowest seen since the beginning of the space age. IBEX is set to launch Oct. 19 from the Kwajalein Atoll, a part of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean ... "
