"I have no interest in a third party candidacy. None," says Kucinich. "I

Washington wants carefully selected groups to do its bidding. Iraqis

By NAOMI KLEIN

'The people of Iraq are free," declared U.S. President George W. Bush in
Tuesday's Stateof the Union address. The day before, 100,000 Iraqis
begged to differ.

They took to the streets of Baghdad shouting "Yes, yes to elections. No,
no to selection."

The Avocado Declaration (Part1)
By Peter Camejo
INTRODUCTION

The Green Party is at a crossroads. The 2004 elections place before us a
clear and unavoidable choice. On one side, we can continue on the path
of political independence, building a party of, by and for the people by
running our own campaign for President of the United States. The other
choice is the well-trodden path of lesser-evil politics, sacrificing our
own voice and independence to support whoever the Democrats nominate in
order, we are told, to defeat Bush.

George Bush will have caused the poisoning of hundreds of thousands
By Frederick Sweet

When this war ends, George Bush will have caused the poisoning of
hundreds of thousands more humans than he said Saddam Hussein poisoned.

In its 110,000 air raids against Iraq, the US A-10 Warthog aircraft
launched 940,000 depleted uranium shells, and in the land offensive, its
M60, M1 and M1A1 tanks fired a further 4,000 larger caliber also uranium
shells. The Bush administration and the Pentagon said there is no danger
to American troops or Iraqi civilians from breathing the uranium oxide
dust produced in depleted uranium (DU) weapons explosions.

San Francisco: Announcing the First Conference
For the City's New Progressive Left Movement

Let's Organize the Left behind the Matt Gonzalez campaign

Sunday, February 22, 2004
9 AM - Registration and Breakfast served on the premises
10 AM - 5 PM - Conference proceedings
Women’s Building, 3543 18th Street
(Between Valencia and Guerrero)

Don’t let the energy and possibilities of the progressive left movement behind
the Matt Gonzalez candidacy disappear.

Help organize a new Progressive Left and Independent Movement in San Francisco
to participate in community struggles, in the unions, the antiwar movement and
to train and select candidates for local Elections.

The conference will include discussions and workshops on organizing around
issues affecting immigrants and people of color, trade union work and candidates
and propositions for upcoming elections.

We will also discuss how to enhance and support the most prominent points of the
Gonzalez campaign's progressive platform.

Position papers and draft resolutions will be forwarded to all registered
participants in advance of the conference. Draft papers along the lines of this
call to discuss at the conference are welcome.

A coordinating body will be voted on at the Conference.

If anything was proven in the Mayoral runoff election, it was that the local
Democratic Party political machine is an integral part of the Democratic Party
of Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Lieberman et al who mobilized vast resources to
support neo-liberal candidate Gavin Newsom and tried to destroy the emerging new
progressive movement behind the candidacy of Matt Gonzalez.

If you agree with:

• If you agree with breaking with the bi-partisan political regime of both the
Democratic Party’s and Republican Party’s leaderships and creating a new
progressive left and independent political movement.
* If you agree to campaign to register voters as Greens, P&FP or decline to
state and to set up an ongoing organization unifying Greens, socialists, working
class activists and people of color outside the two-party structures.
* If you agree that while working on issues with Democrats (war and peace, some
social issues, propositions, etc) is worthwhile, the movement should not waste
its energies trying to reform one of the two parties of the ruling elite and
thus should not work, support or encourage candidates running as Democrats
• If you agree with raising a local platform including municipal power;
non-citizens voting rights; progressive taxation; opposition to war, occupation
and the Patriot Act; economic development of working class neighborhoods;
reparations for Bayview Hunters Point; tenants’ rights and rent control;
workers’ rights; accessible housing for working families, people of color and
immigrants; IRV, and neighborhood control through elected neighborhood councils
…
• If you agree with choosing progressive left candidates democratically rather
than by top-down appointment or self-appointment and having those candidates be
accountable to the movement rather than vice versa...

...Then you are encouraged and welcomed to help organize
and participate in this critical conference.

Organizing Committee Meetings Every Saturday at 6 PM

OPPOSITION IS RISING

Opposition is rising against Bush. The massive overwhelming majority of
the world is against Bush's war policies. The resistance to the
occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the inability of the U.S. media
and government to prevent the world from hearing the truth about these
events, is weakening Bush's standing. The corporate interests and their
media apparently want to make a great effort to get Bush elected, but if
this becomes too difficult, the Democratic Party will be prepared to
appear as an "opposition" that will continue the essence of Bush's
policy with new justifications, modifications and adjusted forms.

Selective memory and a dishonest doctrine
By Noam Chomsky

All people who have any concern for human rights, justice and integrity
should be overjoyed by the capture of Saddam Hussein, and should be
awaiting a fair trial for him by an international tribunal.

An indictment of Saddam's atrocities would include not only his
slaughter and gassing of Kurds in 1988 but also, rather crucially, his
massacre of the Shiite rebels who might have overthrown him in 1991.

At the time, Washington and its allies held the "strikingly unanimous
view (that) whatever the sins of the Iraqi leader, he offered the West
and the region a better hope for his country's stability than did those
who have suffered his repression," reported Alan Cowell in the New York
Times.

indicated that the Iraqi president did have them.

Kerry Wins N.H. Primary, Dean Second, Clarke 3rd
By AP and other agencies and Kim Locker from Frontlines

MANCHESTER, N.H. - John Kerry, who increasingly is looking as the
favorite of the Democratic core leadership, overpowered Howard Dean and
went to win New Hampshire's primary Tuesday, scoring a second-straight
campaign victory to establish the four-term senator as the Democratic
Party's presidential front-runner.

"It's an enormous victory, a huge turnaround," Kerry told The Associated
Press. "We were written off for months, and plugged on and showed people
the determination we have to defeat President Bush."

San Francisco: Announcing the First Conference

for the City's New Progressive Left Movement

Let's Organize the Left

Behind the Matt Gonzalez campaign

Sunday, February 22, 2004

9 AM  - Registration and Breakfast served on the premises

10 AM - 5 PM - Conference proceedings

Women’s Building, 3543 18th Street

(between Valencia and Guerrero)

Don’t let the energy and possibilities of the progressive left movement behind the Matt Gonzalez candidacy disappear.

Help organize a new Progressive Left and Independent Movement in San Francisco to participate in community struggles, in the unions, the antiwar movement and to train and select candidates for local Elections.

The conference will include discussions and workshops on organizing around issues affecting immigrants and people of color, trade union work and candidates and propositions for upcoming elections.

We will also discuss how to enhance and support the most prominent points of the Gonzalez campaign's progressive platform.

Position papers and draft resolutions will be forwarded to all registered participants in advance of the conference.

A coordinating body will be voted on at the Conference.

If anything was proven in the Mayoral runoff election, it was that the local Democratic Party political machine is an integral part of the Democratic Party of Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Lieberman et al who mobilized vast resources to support neo-liberal candidate Gavin Newsom and tried to destroy the emerging new progressive movement behind the candidacy of Matt Gonzalez.

If you agree with:

• If you agree with breaking with the bi-partisan political regime of both the Democratic Party’s and Republican Party’s leaderships and creating a new progressive left and independent political movement.

* If you agree to campaign to register voters as Greens, P&FP or decline to state and to set up an ongoing organization unifying Greens, socialists, working class activists and people of color outside the two-party structures.

* If you agree that while working on issues with Democrats (war and peace, some social issues, propositions, etc) is worthwhile, the movement should not waste its energies trying to reform one of the two parties of the ruling elite and thus should not work, support or encourage candidates running as Democrats

• If you agree with raising a local platform including municipal power; non-citizens voting rights; progressive taxation; opposition to war, occupation and the Patriot Act; economic development of working class neighborhoods; reparations for Bayview Hunters Point; tenants’ rights and rent control; workers’ rights; accessible housing for working families, people of color and immigrants; IRV, and neighborhood control through elected neighborhood councils …

• If you agree with choosing progressive left candidates democratically rather than by top-down appointment or self-appointment and having those candidates be accountable to the movement rather than vice versa...

...Then you are encouraged and welcomed to help organize and participate in this critical conference.

SPACE IS LIMITED SO WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND REGISTERING NOW,

WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE CONFERENCE.

Suicide Car Bomb in Baghdad Kills Three, Wounds 10; Violence increases
as Elections are Debated
By Joseph Logan

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A suicide bomber rammed a car packed with more than
400 pounds of explosives into a Baghdad hotel where an Iraqi minister
and foreigners were staying on Wednesday, killing three people.
Labor Minister Sami al-Majoun was unhurt in the attack. A South African
contractor and two Iraqis were killed and at least 10 others wounded in
the blast which ripped the front off the three-storey Shaheen Hotel.

"We were at our post when a car came rushing at us. We opened fire on it
but couldn't stop it and then it blew up," said Abdulamir Kraybot, a
bodyguard for the minister.

Dominican Strike Shuts Down Businesses
By PETER PRENGAMAN, Associated Press Writer

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Businesses shut down, schools closed
and streets emptied for a 48-hour strike Wednesday to protest the
Dominican Republic's worst economic crisis in decades.

Police fired warning shots to disperse protesters who pushed flaming
barricades into the streets. A similar strike in November left six dead.

Despite pleas from President Hipolito Mejia to spare the country another
economic blow, more than half the nation's major businesses closed and
some government workers stayed home.

The strike comes amid criticism over Mejia's re-election bid and his
failure to improve the country's deteriorating economy.

In the past year, inflation has topped 42 percent, the Dominican peso
has lost more than half its value against the U.S. dollar, and the
unemployment rate has risen to more than 16 percent.

Kerry Wins N.H. Primary, Dean Second, Clarke/Edwards 3rd

Commentators highlighted the help Kerry received from Senator Kennedy
and other mainstream Democrats.

Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina and retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark
had their own race for third. Clarke finally seemed to defeat Edwards
for one percentage point, but Edwards gained in the last count,
apparently winning the 3rd. slot for about 200 votes.

War, Occupation and Lies: US troops must leave now, Self-Determination for the Iraqi people

BY Simon Morales

What do we ALL know now?

What those of us in the antiwar movement were saying more than a year ago is now a mainstream assumption: George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Colin Powell duped Americans with lies about Iraq’s Weapons of Mass Destruction, the Saddam-Al Quada connection, the Iraq-911 connection, the programs for biological, chemical and nuclear weapons allegedly in the hands of Saddam Hussein and the “immediacy of a threat.”

These lies made the “preemptive war doctrine” credible to post 9/11 frightened Americans.

Bush's Independent Inquiry Commision? Neither an "Inquiry" nor "Independent."

US President George Bush has named what he calls a "bipartisan" commission to investigate intelligence failures in Iraq.

Scott Ritter: Kerry, Too, Needs to Clear the Air

by Scott Ritter

On April 23, 1971, a 27-year-old Navy veteran named John Kerry sat before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee and chided members on their leadership failures regarding the war in Vietnam.

"Where is the leadership?" Kerry, a decorated hero who had proved his courage under fire, demanded of the senators. "Where are they now that we, the men they sent off to war, have returned?" Kerry lambasted those who had pushed so strongly for war in Vietnam. "These men have left all the casualties and retreated behind a pious shield of public rectitude."

War, Occupation and Lies: US troops must leave now, Self-Determination for the Iraqi people

By Simon Morales

What do we ALL know now?

What those of us in the antiwar movement were saying more than a year ago is now a mainstream assumption: George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Colin Powell duped Americans with lies about Iraq’s Weapons of Mass Destruction, the Saddam-Al Quad connection, the Iraq-911 connection, the programs for biological, chemical and nuclear weapons allegedly in the hands of Saddam Hussein and the “immediacy of a threat.”

These lies made the “preemptive war doctrine” credible to post 9/11 frightened Americans.

Bush's Independent Inquiry Commission? Neither an "Inquiry" nor "Independent."

By Simon Morales

US President George Bush has named what he calls a "bipartisan" commission to investigate intelligence failures in Iraq.

In a hastily arranged appearance in a White House press briefing, Bush named Democratic Senator Charles Robb and a pro-Republican appeals court judge, Laurence Silberman, as the chairpersons.

CALL FOR THE CONFERENCE, POINTS OF UNITY AND REGISTRATION FORM

San Francisco: Announcing the First Conference for the City's

New Progressive Left Movement

Let's Organize the Left Behind

the Matt Gonzalez campaign

SPACE IS LIMITED SO WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND REGISTERING NOW, WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE CONFERENCE.

FOR A STRONG, ORGANIZED AND EFFECTIVE

 GREEN PARTY IN SAN FRANCISCO!

VOTE ON MARCH 2!

If you are a Green who cares about progressive left issues and would like to see a stronger Green Party in San Francisco, vote for these candidates for County Council (Green County Central Committee):

Chris Finn

Former Vice-President of the CCSF Student government; ATU, 1555 member (BART), delegate to the SF Labor Council and journalist for SF Frontlines.

Chris fought and won struggles on behalf of students at City College; he presented and won the endorsement of ATU, 1555 for the candidacy of Green Party Mayoral candidate Matt Gonzalez and played a prominent role as an activist in that campaign that shook San Francisco.

Chris has been at the forefront of community struggles in Bayview Hunters Point and the Mission District as well as for immigrant rights; intervened in tenant mobilizations and is a builder of the antiwar and labor movement. Chris is working to connect the Green Party with communities of color and labor, while fighting against the top down control of the labor bureaucracy.

He will bring experience as an organizer and a working class fighter to the Green County Council.

Carlos Petroni

Editor of Frontlines, the newspaper of the Left.  He was the first to promote and endorse Matt Gonzalez for Mayor and he and Frontlines were key in winning Gonzalez' slot in the runoff.  He played a key role in organizing the largest left rallies and forums to support Matt Gonzalez and helped organize hundreds of volunteers to work in the campaign.

Carlos has a background as a union organizer; progressive journalist and as a Latino community fighter.  He is the co-coordinator of the campaign "Papers for All" demanding full amnesty for all undocumented immigrants; co-author of the Bayview Reparations Act and co-author of the Proposition to extend voting rights to non-citizens for local elections.

He is the co-chair of the Immigrant Pride Day Organizing Committee.

Catherine (Caty) Powell

A writer for Frontlines newspaper and an activist in many social justice campaigns, Caty is a longtime member of the Green Party. A poet and actress, Caty played key roles in the campaigns "Papers for All" and the "Bayview Reparations Act."

Strong on women’s issues, she will bring her experiences in the workplace and in working class communities to expand and strengthen the Green Party constituencies in San Francisco.

Supervisor Matt Gonzalez endorses Chris Finn and Carlos Petroni

For County Council of the SF Green Party

Chris Finn, Carlos Petroni and Caty Powell are also endorsed by: Immigrant Rights Movement (MDI); Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1555 (BART); Vietnamese Residents’ Association; Frontlines newspaper; Left Party; Maurice Campbell, chairperson, Bayview Hunters Point Community First Coalition and over 100 Green, community and labor activists.

Additional endorsements for these candidates: Chris Finn is endorsed by the SF Tenants Union;  Carlos Petroni received the endorsement of  the Mexican American Political Association; Caty Powell is also endorsed by the National Women’s Political Caucus San Francisco and the San Francisco Women’s Political Committee

If you would like to endorse this slate or any of these candidates, please send an e-mail to:

alternative@...

As part of the progressive left slate for Green County Council,

Chris Finn, Carlos Petroni and Caty Powell will fight for:

1. Work for a strong SF Green Party with clubs/branches in all 25 neighborhoods of the city.

2. Increase the work of the Green Party in communities of color and the labor movement. One of the main weaknesses of the Green Party, and progressives in general, is the lack of connection with communities of color and labor.

Increase the representation in the Green Party of people of color, immigrants and workers.

Develop a plan to increase Green registration in the City from 3% to 10% and the number of active Greens organized in working groups from 100 to 1,000 in the next period of time. The past leadership of the SF Green Party failed to capitalize effectively on the success of the Matt Gonzalez for Mayor Campaign.

5. Increase grassroots democracy inside the SF Green Party by helping to organize effective working groups, respecting diversity, enabling better communications within the party and from the party to registered members and avoiding the rule of cliques and gatekeepers that harmed the party in the past.

6. Encourage the Green Party to run candidates for all local offices. Fight for the Green Party to have a strong Presidential campaign in 2004. In the past, the Green Party has run few local candidates, often choosing instead to support candidates from other parties.

7. Keep the Green Party independent of Democrats and Republicans, gaining from the crisis of the bipartisan political system. If we find a good activist and leader of the community who would like to run as a Democrat, we will encourage that candidate to break with the Democrats and join the Green Party.

8. Work to unite in the Green Party all forces of the left. From students to community groups, from antiwar to labor activists, the Green Party should become the electoral platform for all those who struggle for social justice, equality and democracy. We will work towards a united front between the Green Party and other forces to the left of the Democratic Party.

9. Fight for the SF Green Party to live up to its responsibility as the second political force in the City by assuming more of a leadership role in local issues, the antiwar movement and in organizing in communities of color and the labor movement. The SF Green Party should not relinquish its role as the leader of the opposition to the Democratic Party's machine & city government of Gavin Newsom.

VOTE FOR CHRIS FINN, CARLOS PETRONI AND CATY POWELL

 FOR GREEN COUNTYCOUNCIL

(GREEN COUNTY CENTRAL COMMITTEE)

Also recommended for Green County Council:

Marc Chandonia and Kim Knox.  While these two candidates for Green CC still have a soft spot about supporting non-Green/Left wing/independent candidates, both sided with the overwhelming majority of Green Party members in supporting the candidacy of Matt Gonzalez for Mayor and worked hard in his campaign’s effort. Kim Knox is one of the two incumbents of the outgoing County Council running for re-election.

WRITE-IN TERRY BAUM

For United States. Congressional District 8

In 2003, Pelosi voted to give Bush the power to decide to make war, a power that is vested only in the Congress. Pelosi voted for the Patriot Act, a horrendous assault on our civil liberties. Pelosi not only voted to approve Bush’s invasion of Iraq, but she pressured all the Democrats to line up behind Bush, scolding them that they would appear unpatriotic if they were not joyful about the President’s imperialist venture.

Terry Baum is the official candidate of the Green Party and has been endorsed by all SF Green elected officials (Supervisor Matt Gonzalez; School Board Members Sarah Lipson and Mark Sanchez) as well as Frontlines newspaper and many others.

Because of an undemocratic technically of the law, the Green Party was unable to place Terry Baum on the ballot for the primary election.  In order for the Green Party to have a candidate in November against pro-war Pelosi, Terry needs 1,605 Greens to write her in on the ballot on March 2.

Do not procrastinate: vote!

A GREEN CHOICE FOR THE 12TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

VOTE FOR PAT GRAY

Pat Gray deserves your support to challenge incumbent Democrat Tom Lantos.  Lantos supported the war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, voted for the Patriot Act and has become a Democrat for Bush in most instances.

Pat Gray opposes the war and occupation of Iraq and is for the repeal of the Patriot Act. She supported Matt Gonzalez for Mayor against the Demo-Greens who wanted to endorse a liberal Democrat (her Green opponent in the race – while a decent progressive on most issues - belongs to this group).

The Case for Legitimacy of the Iraqi Resistance

Are they terrorists, insurgents, “outsiders” or homegrown resistance to the illegal occupation?

By Sebastian Robles

BAGHDAD, Iraq - This is the third rail of discussion of US policies when it comes to discussing the conquest and occupation of Iraq. It is a theme that both Republicans and Democrats will NOT address as neither will address the basic question: do the Iraqis have the right to oppose the US/British occupation and demand the US-led Occupation Forces leave their country without conditions and immediately?

Do the inhabitants of an occupied country have the right to defend it against the occupiers by any means necessary? (Read the complete article at:

For the last three years we've heard it over and over: the Green Party spoiled the election for Al Gore and helped elect George W. Bush. But the question that rarely gets asked is what have the Democrats done about it?

Chris Finn, Carlos Petroni and Caty Powell are also endorsed by: Immigrant Rights Movement (MDI); Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1555 (BART); Vietnamese Residents’ Association; Frontlines newspaper; Left Party; Maurice Campbell, chairperson, Bayview Hunters Point Community First Coalition; Abel Mouton, former Green Party candidate for College Board and over 100 Green, community and labor activists.

                                                                   THANK YOU!

By SAM HANANEL, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Ralph Nader said Monday he won't back off from his latest campaign for the White House even if the major candidates are tied in polls going in to Election Day, a scenario that led many friends and former supporters to urge him not to run again.

Bay Guardian / Bruce Brugmann

Cynical Endorsements

By Gina Alvarez

Election time is when we get to see whether the SFBG/BB will walk the walk. Staying consistent, they did it again with their endorsements—including right wing Democrats and shots to weaken the Green Party.

Bush, Kerry, Schwarzenegger: Hands off Gay Marriage in San Francisco!

Bowing to public pressure and calls from the l/g/b/t community, as well as working to distract attention from other issues and work on his political career, Mayor Gavin Newsom authorized City Hall to issue marriage certificates to l/g/b/t couples. At this writing, around 3,000 couples have used the benefit.

No Truce, No Honeymoon: Not with Bush, not with John Kerry, not with Gavin Newsom.

STOP THE GROWING TRUCE ON THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS – According to the old axiom of bourgeois politics, Democratic Presidential candidates run to their left to win the primaries and whoever wins moves center and right during the general election. Say what?

Democrats ask the Greens to delay party building—but for how long?

By Matt Gonzalez

For the last three years we've heard it over and over: the Green Party spoiled the election for Al Gore and helped elect George W. Bush. But the question that rarely gets asked is what have the Democrats done about it?

At the Gates of Persia II: 25th Anniversary of the rule of Mullahs and the New Iran's crisis

Last February 11 marked the 25th Anniversary of the Iranian Revolution that toppled the US puppet Shah Reza Pahlavi in 1979, and the ultimate creation of the Islamic Revolutionary Republic that stands today.

This comes in the midst of an election crisis in which some 3000 candidates from the Iranian ballots to be voted upon on February 20th of this year were barred from participating.
