First of all, please email me your telephone number, Sherre. I wrote it down to
call you back yesterday and, in the midst of all of our company, the number got
misplaced and I can't find it.

I agree. I have had years were the deadline Oct. something) passed so, we
didn't
end up filing. Other years, I've filed. I've registered with CLonlara for next
year so, they will file anything that needs to be filed, for me. Fortunately,
California and Fresno City schools are lenient. As for filing for preschoolers,
I
probably wouldn't bother filing until my child was six years old (mandatory
school
age here).
> I just received a wonderful set of chemistry/science posters

This is definitely one of the perks. Some homeschoolers have actually had
business
cards and letterhead made, with their school name/logo on it, for just such
purposes.

I'm flexible. I like Oso de Oro, since it's such an awesome park but I'm open
to
other parks, as well.

Currently my children are involved in gymnastics and Tae Kwon Do over at Break
the
Barriers. I like their philosophy there and my children seem to enjoy
themselves.
The lessons there (for these two activities, anyway) are $28/mo, with a once a
year
registration fee of $30 per child.

All of these things sound great to me.

I could probably be of some help with both of those languages. I am fluent in
ASL
(alittle rusty on "reading" others but, it would come back quickly, I hope). As
for
Spanish, I had three years in high school and two years in college. I also was
an
exchange student in El Salvador, many, many years ago. I used to be fluent in
Spanish. I am no longer fluent but wouldn't have trouble teaching at least the
elementary levels of it. BTW, I'd love to have you teach my children arts and
crafts (when things calm down for you, of course)!

Lisa ~ we filed an individual affidavit last year. Named our "school" and
everything. Sometimes it makes it easier when requesting materials to actually
have a school name. I just received a wonderful set of chemistry/science posters
that total 20' in length when put together......anyway, my point was they came
quickly to our "school" and they are extremely high quality,
lessons/informations included. We showed our affidavit at Hollywood when we
signed up for the teacher's program (for free videos).
Jill - I agree that activities together would be so much fun! I'd like to see
regular park days and such, too.
Do you all think we should pick one location or alternate between a couple of
parks? Are any of you currently participating in gymnastics, iceskating,
karate, etc. and could offer others some directions for where/when/who to
contact? We really like the Met and would enjoy a group activity there, too.
Zoo days, movie days, park days, pool days
The idea of helping each other teach sounds really good, too! I would love to do
some arts/crafts classes for the kids. Later (after things are settled down
with my dad) I would enjoy teaching or co-teaching something else. Any other
volunteers? Jill, you know I've kinda volunteered Addison and me for ASL! He
said he would like to learn Spanish; we got some materials for beginning with
the basics but it doesn't help me with my accent (or lack of one, actually!)
Let's hear from some of you other list members, too, please!!

Jill and others,
I'm curious. Have you filed an individual affidavit to homeschool or are you
part of a private independent group of homeschoolers already?
Our son is only three. He isn't ready for a lot of formal education. We do
some activities with A Bekka preschool materials and a lot of arts and
crafts. We will probably join Tower, one of the local Christian homeschool
groups, eventually.
I think I would like to use this group as an additional source for ideas and
support.

Cheryl~I am so sorry that you and your family are going through such an ordeal.
You are in our thoughts and our prayers;I am sending your need to our church
group who will also lift your name up in prayer.
Our family spent 7 weeks at UCSF about 4 years ago with my dad who stayed in the
CCUand ICU nearly the entire time. They have some wonderful physicians, surgeons
and a very caring staff who will offer your family much support. Just in case
you
haven't been told yet, however - 1.)there are special facilities within the
hospital itself for families to sleep and shower daily; 2.) many motels, hotels,
B & B (some of which are just across the street from the hospital) offer good
discounts and/or shuttle service for patient families. It makes the stay
somewhat
easier for the family!
Our prayers are with you and yours, Cheryl. Get well soon; we'll have a park day
celebration in your honor!
Sherre
Hi all,
I missed park day but had a great excuse...my daughter had the flu earlier in
the week and I thought I had the same thing...Thursday (1 week ago) I went to
the Dr. and he sent me immediately to St. Agnes for internal bleeding.
Saturday I was air-lifted to UCSF and am still there. My mom (from AZ) is
with me - hubby went home to spend a night with the girls but will return
tomorrow (Friday). I have several blood clots in my veins surrounding the
liver but they cannot operate and are trying to figure out what medicines
might work with me. I am on one and when they tried to wean me off, the
internal bleeding began again. I have received 10units of blood thus far and
am stable right now. I solicit your prayers - God is in complete control in
this situation and will be glorified in the outcome. I look forward to
meeting everyone *someday* but it'll have to be another week.
Thank you for your prayers,

Hi!!! One of the things I'd like to see is perhaps the formation of a
homeschooling group where we could have park days, perhaps have informal
meetings
where we could share ideas, have our children get to know one another, etc.
Perhaps we could even trade off teaching parts of a unit study or individual
subjects. I could, for example, teach sign language or elementary Spanish.
Someone else might teach a lesson in science, math, arts and crafts, etc.
Another
idea could be to set up a curriculum exchange. If anyone else is interested in
any of these things, pleas let me know. I'll be anxious to see what others
think
of, as well.
Jill
Sherre, add my prayers, too.
Our day at the park was, indeed, delightful!! I hope that we can find a way
to do it often.

Hi Cheryl and others,
I just read your email. I have the tape and a book about documenting student
progress as a home educator. I haven't read the book or listened to the tape
yet. I would be happy to loan the tape to you. I have read that some
homeschoolers enroll in private distance learning type programs for high
school. Much of the school work is completed on line or through videos. The
schools are accredited and provide official transcripts. One of my
homeschool magazines also provides lists of colleges and universities that
actively recruit and welcome homeschoolers. My son is still only three years
old. We don't know what route we will take. For the time being, we are
committed to homeschooling.

Lisa,
I went to the convention both days. I'd love to hear some of the points from
the tape regarding "how to document student progress." This has been our

Hello, Fresno Homeschoolers!
We're having our first park day on Wednesday, the 26th. The meeting
place will be Oso de Oro park on Forkner, between Bullard and Barstow.
We plan on arriving about 11 am and "hanging out", getting to know one
another for several hours. There will be several other area
homeschoolers who are not on the list currently because of computer
problems. One of them is setting up a "Storyland at Roeding Park" play
for homeschoolers to participate in.
This park is one of our favorite Fresno parks because of its multi
purpose use, 2 playgrounds, great paths, etc. Bring along a lunch and
we'll all relax and get to know one another.
Hope you can make it!!
We have 2 two new subscribers to the list; we're glad you're here! When
you feel comfortable, please give us a brief info of your children's
ages, how long you've been homeschooling, questions and/or ideas you may
have......you know, the basics!
Have any of you tried out the Hollywood Video Teacher's offer yet?
Remember that you can get ANY video, except new releases, FREE. And
there are achievement coupons for the kids to use for their own free
rentals. It's a great program.
Bill Nye, the science guy, will offer you free science kits fairly
often. Check out his site for science, videos, offers and his schedule!
Discovery provides you with a complete teacher's planning guide,
schedule, etc. And discounts when you order. They send you a really nice
teacher's guide for planning and ideas/support.
The Exploratorium in S.F. has one of the best sites we've found, for a
lot of reasons - especially for the home experiments (for all age
ranges). They've got some really, really fun experiments, but most
importantly, they provide a complete and understandable explanation of
what's happened during the experiment.
Today is Addi's 8th birthday - so I'm keeping this short since I have so
much to do.
Y'all have a great weekend!
Sherre
Please post your responses to the list, too, so that we can learn about
different "schools", etc! One of you might have just what someone else needs
(in terms of information, contacts, etc) but if the responses aren't to the
list, they'll never know! :-(
I'd enjoy meeting at Chaffee Zoo, too. Anyone else?!
How 'bout a trip to the Met - is anyone interested in coming along?
Please also remember to introduce other friends to the list; together we have
a lot to share!
Thanks

Pass the Pigs is a silly little online dice game. The
scoring of thegame is very do-able for primary students. The online
edition
automatically keeps score, but it would be excellent for printing the
opening page and putting it in a learning center for making up word
problems.

Funbrain includes simple games such as Math Baseball,
Changemaker, and a number line game called Line Jumper. The games are
fairly slow, and theres a lot of distracting information that does not
relate to the problem at hand. http://www.funbrain.com
At the Monster Math site, there are monster story problems.
Sound is available on Macs. (If you have a PC, pair good readers with
less
proficient readers to work at this site.) This site is very good for
second

IF this is the same as the bill in question (HR 1691), I can't see where it
will affect homeschoolers - it seems to be something to improve existing
school buildings. I'll continue my search :o))
