The Law Of Specialized Knowledge
by John Colanzi

If you're familiar with the works of Napoleon Hill, you
know that one of his seventeen Laws Of Success is the Law
of Specialized Knowledge.

It sounds impressive, but how can you use it in your
business?

You can use it to specialize in what types of products or
services you'll promote. That's a start, but I've found
another way that you can use it and save yourself:

<> time

<> money

<> aggravation.

When I first started building my business, I was under the
mistaken impression that more was better.

After wasting a lot of time and getting myself aggravated,
I realized that only a few methods of promotion actually
produced results worth the time spent.

If you broke online marketing methods down, you'd find
there are only a handful that will produce any significant
results.

Once I realized that:

<> My profits went up

<> I wasted less time

<> I had a lot less headaches

Now I've come to realize that I could further narrow my
efforts down to one method of promotion. I could see the
results every time I used it.

After all these years of floundering I realize that I can
make a living online, doing nothing more that writing
articles such as this one.

Does that mean writing articles is the only method that
will work for you?

No. You have to find what works for you.

Once you've found it specialize and watch your profits soar.

Maybe you're good at achieving high rankings in the search
engines. Maybe your best results come from placing solo ads
in ezines.

The exact method doesn't matter. Once you've found what
works for you, put on your blinders and concentrate on
improving your implementation.

Become a marketing specialist. Study everything you can on
how to get the most mileage from your specialized knowledge.

Become the best at YOUR promotional method and watch your
profits soar and your business grow.

Put the LAW OF SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE on your side and you'll
find reaching your goals a lot easier.

Wishing You Success,
John Colanzi

ARE YOU SETTING YOUR CHILD UP FOR FAILURE?
Copyright Leigh Butler All Rights Reserved.

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is
old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

No matter what the age of your child, as a parent, you
should be preparing him for his future. By preparing him
for his future, I mean instilling the values and behaviors
in him that will ensure his success as an adult. If you
are not doing this you are setting your child up for
failure.

AGENTS OF SOCIALIZATION

The family is a child's primary agent of socialization,
especially in the early years before the child enters
school. Upon entering school a child is immersed in his
peer culture. He spends the majority of the day with his
peers who become very important agents of socialization
from this point forward.

As a child grows older the peer culture becomes more
important and is a more influential part of his life. The
family continues to be the primary agent of socialization.
However, the values, behaviors, and expectations of the
family have to compete with other agents of socialization,
especially peers, as a child matures. Other agents of
socialization include but are not limited to school,
church, and the media.

UNDESIRED BEHAVIOR

Parents often wonder why their child exhibits undesired
behavior. Behavior is learned. If a child is exhibiting
undesired behavior he learned it from an agent of
socialization.

What if a child exhibits an undesired behavior that is
contrary to the values and behaviors the parents have
instilled?

We all would like to think that once we have instilled a
value or behavior in our child, it is there for eternity,
and we don't have to worry about it ever again. However,
this is not a perfect world.

Throughout childhood you will have to positively reinforce
values and behaviors that are in line with what you have
instilled and negatively reinforce values and behaviors
that are not in line with what your have instilled. When
you use positive reinforcement you are strengthening what
you have already taught. When you use negative
reinforcement you are extinguishing undesired behaviors
that have been learned from other agents.

The values and behaviors you have taught your child will be
in competition with those of other agents if the other
agents do not share the same values and behaviors as your
family. Sometimes your child may learn and exhibit these
alternative values and behaviors. That is why positive and
negative reinforcement is necessary.

When a child becomes an adult he exhibits those values and
behaviors learned during childhood. If your child does not
have an arsenal of values and behaviors instilled in him
that is conducive to success then one of two things usually
happens.

First, he may experience an unstable adulthood. In this
scenario, life experiences become his teacher. He learns
proper values and behaviors from trial and error where the
result he gets from life itself becomes a positive or
negative reinforcer. He may or may not reach the point
where he becomes successful.

Or, second, he becomes an all out failure. In this
scenario, he accepts being a failure as way of life. He
sees that he does not have the proper arsenal of values and
behaviors for success and makes no attempt to acquire them.
Lifetime failure becomes both inevitable and inescapable.

So, how do you ensure your child's success as an adult?
You follow Proverbs 22:6 which says, "Train up a child in
the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart
from it."

Instill in your child the values and behaviors you know he
will need in the future. Then you can rest - assured that
although your child is influenced by other agents, and may
depart from what you have taught him at some point,
ultimately he will return to that which was first instilled
in him.

Who Are You?
Copyright Leigh Butler All Rights Reserved

If someone asks you the question, "Who are you?" how would
you respond? Most people respond by stating their name.
For instance, I would respond, "My name is Leigh." But,
does my response tell you anything about who I am?

What if I asked you to tell me about yourself? How would
you respond? More than likely you would respond by
listing your roles and positions followed by your interest.

So, who are you? Do you know? Are you merely a name, or
are you much more?

We often fail to realize that our roles and positions
help to define who we are. For example, I am a student,
daughter, educator, consultant, and guardian.

DEFINING YOUR ROLES AND POSITIONS

Roles and positions are interrelated but have different
meanings. Roles are the different parts we play when we
interact with other people. Positions are our locations
within a collection of interconnected roles. A role includes
the duties or obligations of the position.

In order to define your roles you must first understand that
for every position there is an expectation of what should be
the behavior of a person who holds that position. For
example, educators are expected to teach, assist students,
grade papers, etc.

Defining your roles and positions help you to better manage
them and maximize your role performance.

MANAGING ROLES AND POSITIONS

Every individual learns that certain behaviors are expected
of him as an occupant of a particular position. In other
words, he learns the role associated with the position.

Everyone occupies a number of different positions and
therefore has a number of different roles. However, few
people learn how to effectively manage them all. Usually
ineffective management is due to ambiguous understanding of
role expectations and/or the burden of managing the behaviors
associated with multiple roles.

In order to manage your roles and positions in a more
efficient and effective manner, list each role and position
you hold followed by the behaviors that are expected of you
as an occupant. Show your list to someone such as your
husband, wife, or boss who can tell you if you
have accurately captured what is expected of you.

Give your list careful thought and make necessary revisions
to the expected behaviors. From this list you should be able
to effectively and efficiently manage your roles and
positions.

MAXIMIZING ROLE PERFORMANCE

Socially appropriate role performance requires knowledge
about what is expected, the ability to perform what is
expected, and the motivation to perform what is expected.

Learning to define and manage your roles and positions
provides you with knowledge of what is expected. However,
you determine your ability to perform what is expected and
your motivation to perform what is expected.

After final list revisions are completed, examine the list
carefully to determine your ability to perform each role and
position. Only you can make that determination because only
you know how much responsibility you can manage. Remember
your goal is to maximize role performance.

You've determined that you have the knowledge and the ability
to perform what is expected. But, are you motivated to
perform what is expected? Never accept a role or position
that you are not motivated to perform. Generally, you will
not do a good job if you are not motivated even if you have
the knowledge and the ability.

In order to maximize role performance all three ingredients
must be present - knowledge, ability, and motivation.

Knowledge of roles and positions should help you to better
understand who you are and empower you to look beyond your
name into your inner self.

So, the next time someone asks you, "Who are you?" make sure
you not only give them your name but also inform them about
your roles and positions. Your roles and positions are part
of the essence of who your are.

Have You Ever Run Energy?
By Jan Tincher

Have you ever run energy? Do you know what *running energy*
means? (I know that this may be something foreign to many of you
at first, but then that's how you learn, right?)

If you haven't run energy before, you probably have questions. Your
questions might be: What is *energy* specifically? Who runs energy?
Why do they do it? How can I do it? What does it do? How can it help
ME?

First off, energy is like a tingling or a warmth in your hand, a feeling
you get in your body that something is there that wasn't a minute ago.
You can direct that energy with your mind.

For instance, watch your hand. Wait for the tingle, warmth, or whatever,
that may show up in your fingertips, your palm, or wherever, just from
your concentration. Now when you feel that feeling, in your mind, take
it from where it was, let's say it's in your fingertips, and move it down
your finger. You have just run energy.

Wasn't that great? Now, on to your other questions.

Who runs energy?
Answer: Anyone can run energy.

Why do they do it?
Answer: Once you learn to run energy, you can direct healing energy to a
place that has pain. Everyone is different, and therefore use it for
different
purposes, but that is one answer as to why people do it. Another might be
for more warmth.

What does energy do?
Answer: It soothes the pain. It can help with circulation, also.

How can it help ME?
Answer: Learning how to run energy can help you help yourself in times
of need.

Let's say you have arthritis. You are just beginning to get it in your
fingers.
If you spend five minutes 3 times a day running energy through each of your
fingers, you will feel a difference in your finger joints. Once you learn how
to do that, you can run the energy through other joints and help the pain
ease there also. Once you learn to instantaneously run energy, you will be
able to lower or eliminate pain in many areas immediately.

You can do this in your spare time, no less. Let's say you are sitting at the
dentist office, you are nervous and your tooth hurts. That's a great time to
run energy, both in your teeth and gums and in your stomach! When you
learn how to help yourself, you can show others how to help themselves also!

Thanks for reading.

Last night I have conducted a little seminar on the topic
of using the Internet. While no age restriction was placed
in the ad, every participant was at least 55 years old.
Some were clearly of a retired age.

I have never worked with a group of seniors before, and my
assumption was automatically this: they know nothing about
the Web and I will have to take it really slow and carefully.
What I didn't realize is that I am in for a big surprise.

I think I learned more about the Internet than I taught my
wonderful group of participants. We had more of a fun
discussion rather than a class. Some asked questions,
others answered, and I watched in amazement just how much
these people already know about the Internet.

There are some interesting facts I learned out during our
2-hour seminar about people 55 and above, and I would like
to share them with you:

1. They have very inquiring minds, and are curious about
every detail of the Internet

2. They love to socialize and share their knowledge with
others

3. They use the Internet mostly for pleasure, information
and reading news

4. They visit any local events on the subject of the
Internet

5. They ask a lot of questions before buying or joining a
service

6. They are greatly concerned with credit card fraud on the
Internet

After the seminar was over, everyone stayed for another
unplanned 30 minutes to chat and get to know each other.
They had asked more questions, and offered even more
answers :-)

This experience reminds me once again not to assume much
about people you are trying to make your customers. Talk
to them first, ask them questions and listen. You might
be very surprised at what you'll learn.

Spotting and Stopping the Free Ad Cheats.
By Gordon King

In my last article Spotting and Stopping the Ezine Spammer
spamarticle@...
we discussed the different ways of stopping the spammer
by using free ad codes.

The ezine spammer has now got smarter and subscribes to
the ezines to get the free ad code.

When he gets the code each week he spams the ezine with
two or three free ads.

These ads can be hard to spot as he uses a different name
and email address when sending each ad.

Spotting and Stopping this cheat.

1 Do not place the free ads in your ezine until the last possible
moment. If you sort these ads first you can see if there are
duplicates e.g. from same name.

2 Sort your subscriber mailing list into alphabetical order by
using a database program and use this to verify subscribers.

3 When a free ad arrives in your mailbox check and make
sure the email address is listed on your mailing list.

4 If the email address is not on your list keep that email to
one side and make a note of the adverts URL and email
address. Save this information in a folder in your email
program. Name this folder cheats.

5 When you find the source delete this subscriber from your
mailing list so they no longer receive your ezine and free ad code.
You will find that the ex subscriber will still send in free ads
but their free ad will contain an out of date ad code.

For this plan to work you will need to tell all your subscribers
to only use their subscribed email address when posting free ads.
Give them two or three weeks grace and notify them when they
use another email address that this address is not listed and their
ad will be deleted.

You will also need to send out a personalised email to your
mailing list now and then as a lot of subscribers forget their
subscribed email address.

If you stick to this plan you will notice a huge drop in fake
subscriber ads making room for free ads from genuine
advertisers and loyal readers.

How To Gain Rapport
By Jan Tincher

Are you really listening?

While speaking with others or listening to the radio or television, do
you pay attention to the words and phrases people use? Try that.
Try to identify their dominant modes. By modes, I mean visual, audio,
or kinesthetic. Do they see things -- I see what you're saying, hear
things -- I hear what you're saying, or feel things -- I feel that I have
a grasp on what you are saying?

As you do, keep a running tally on words and phrases and which mode
they represent. The Late Show with David Letterman or The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno gives you plenty of opportunities to observe
speaking habits. Once you get used to paying attention to a stranger's
speaking habits, you can easily go on to the people you know.

Now, once you've determined which mode the person is using to
communicate, practice using the same words and phrases as that people
in your conversations with him or her. You don't have to do it exactly.
Stay in the same mode, but use different words. I see -- I view it this
way. I hear -- that sounds right to me. I feel -- I'm touched by that.

Another way of gaining rapport is to practice active listening. Repeat
what someone has just said to you -- as you understand it. Use that
person's dominant perceptual mode as you do.

If they said something important you don't fully understand, look for
the hidden meaning. You do this by asking "What?" questions. Then
vary it by asking "Why?" questions to determine the difference in
responses.

Find someone you admire and show them the courtesy of listening.
People love to be interesting, and if they have your full attention, they
know you are listening. And guess what! If you are listening, they
must be interesting!

Are You Ready To Stop Working?
by John Colanzi

I've got a confession to make.

I don't work anymore.

I haven't worked in almost two years.

Why?

I have so much fun online. I would never consider it work.

The amazing thing is the more fun I have the better my
results. Once I quit working everything just fell into
place.

If you're not having fun and if you consider your online
enterprise just another 9 to 5, maybe you should reconsider
your goals.

Don't take my word for it, listen to what some of the
worlds greatest thinkers have to say about Work.

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil
not, neither do they spin: and yet I say unto you, that
even Solomon in his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Jesus

Work is love made visible.
Kahil Gibran

What we call "creative work" ought not to be called work at
all, because it isn't. I imagine that Thomas Edison never
did a days work in his last fifty years.
Stephen Leacock

If you feel that work is a punishment or hardship, or if
you have no desire for work, or live in the hopes of
retiring soon - do not think you are entertaining the
thoughts of a wise man; you are merely dancing to the tunes
that savages played ten thousand years ago.
Patanjali

Greater even than the pious man is he who eats that which
is the fruit of his own toil; for scripture declares him
twice blessed.
Talmud

The crowning fortune of a man is to be born to some pursuit
which finds him employment and happiness, whether it be to
make baskets, or broadswords, or canals or statues or
songs.
Emerson

Do they know something you and I don't?

If you're one of the 95% who never make any money online,
what do you have to lose. Try doing what you love.

Don't pick something to promote only because you think it
will make money. Pick something that inspires you to do
your best.

Pick something you believe in and gets your blood flowing.

Find your "Magnificient Obsession." You may never have to
work again.

Wishing You Success,

What Kind Of Success Pictures Are You Making?
By Jan Tincher

When you are doing a project, do you have a clear image or picture in
your mind of the successful result you want to achieve?

Look at your picture. Do you get the feeling the goal has ALREADY
been achieved? Does your picture say, *YES, I did it!*?

If not, change your submodalities. Submodalities are things like how
close the picture is to you, is there a smell or scent in the picture, is
there
movement or sound in the picture -- things that you can change around
to suit you. Rearrange things in that picture to make it feel SUCCESSFUL.

Let's start by experimenting.

How about if you bring the success picture you've made in your mind
closer. After you've done that, push it farther away. Test your reactions
to the distance the picture is from you to see which works best for you.
For some, the closer it gets the more successful they feel. For others,
it's the opposite. Which one works for you? Not only what works for
you, but what makes you FEEL more successful -- if it's success you're
after. If you're after love, or peace, or whatever, make sure each
submodality supports that feeling.

How about if you give it more color? Now, give it less color. Now,
brighter color. Now, duller. Test your reactions to the picture to see
which worked best for you.

How about if you put movement, taste, smell in the picture to give it more
appeal? Experiment with each of them, putting more, lots more, less, lots
less in your picture until you come up with the perfect combination.

Work with it until each submodality is right for you.

Now, if that picture tells you you've already achieved your goal, you will
feel successful, just by looking at the picture. If you don't feel successful,
rearrange things again until it works. After all, who's in control here?
You, right?

One thing you need to know for sure is, if you don't FEEL successful,
you won't BE successful.

We all make pictures in our minds. Are yours pictures of success or
failure?

Who's in control? You are! Who can change the pictures so that you go
toward success, instead of toward failure? You can!

How does your picture look now? What kind of pictures are you making in
other areas of your life? Change those pictures, too, until you FEEL
what YOU want to feel. Good luck!

Thanks for reading.
Jan

PRACTICAL PARENTING: HOW TO CURE THE HOMEWORK BLUES
Part 1
Copyright (C) Leigh Butler, All Rights Reserved
----------------------------------------------------------------

Homework does not have to be a time consuming teeth-wrenching
chore for your child. It can actually be an enjoyable
experience. One that he looks forward to each day.

As a parent, you can facilitate the homework process by learning
a few tips and tricks.

HOMEWORK HAS A PURPOSE

This is probably the most overlooked aspect of effective and
efficient homework completion. Children need to know “why” they
have to do homework. They need to know “how” homework is going
to benefit them? They need to know how homework fits into the
general scheme of their education?

If they don’t understand homework’s purpose, the reason they
have to do it, and how it will benefit them, then homework will
be an unfulfilling experience. They will loathe the thought of
doing it. And, its completion will be like pulling teeth.

Teachers give homework to reinforce skills that have been taught
during the school day. Homework also gives the student the
opportunity to get extra practice and work independently. Via
homework, teachers are able to assess the progress of their
students. From the results of this and other assessments (test,
etc.), the teacher is better able to plan and meet the academic
needs of their students.

If your child does not understand the purpose of homework, it is
not likely that he will be enthusiastic about doing homework.
If your child is not enthusiastic about doing homework, it will
probably take him longer to finish, and he’s probably not
getting much reinforcement out of doing it.

Talk to your child about the purpose of homework today.

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING

How well or how fast you complete any task is based upon your
attitude about the task. This is true for homework also.

If your child has a negative attitude about homework, it will
undoubtedly take him longer to complete it. Attitude is 90% of
the battle.

Often parents get the impression that their child lacks the
necessary skills to do homework independently because it takes
their child so long to complete their homework. In many cases
this is not true. The real problem is that the child just has a
negative attitude about doing it so homework becomes a struggle.

Once you help your child change his attitude you have won 90% of
the battle.

To help him change his negative attitude follow the tip above -
talk to him about the purpose of homework. Also, make sure the
environment is conducive to completing homework.

THE HOMEWORK ENVIRONMENT

Another key factor in curing the homework blues is the homework
environment.

Having a set time and place to complete homework is important.
It helps your child establish a routine. Your child knows that
each evening at this time in this place he will be doing
homework. You should make sure that the time and place fits
into the family’s schedule so there are no distractions or
interruptions.

Distractions should be kept to a minimum. There should be no
television, and you should discourage social phone calls for
older children. Also, allow your child to listen to music only
if it is not a distraction.

If you establish a routine and minimize distractions, your child
will be less likely to rush through his assignments.

Curing the homework blues is not simple. There is no magical
solution that works for all children. However, implementing
these tips should provide some help.

Tales of A Newbie Entrepreneur: How I Learned To Accomplish More
in Half the Time
Part 1

----------------------------------------------------------------
I know what you are thinking. Surely this is impossible. How
could anyone learn to accomplish more in half the time? This
must be a hoax. Hmmm! But, it sure would be nice if I could do
that. Well, you can!

If it worked for me, surely it will work for you.

Let me explain.

About a year ago I decided to start my own online business.
This was a new experience for me. I knew absolutely nothing
about running a business.

However, I consider myself to be a lifelong learner and believe
that anyone can learn to do just about anything if they set
their mind to do so. With that in mind, I began to research and
collect information on starting and running an online business.
Needless to say that I was attending graduate school fulltime
and consulting at the time.

These three tasks proved to be more than I could handle. I
won't go into great detail about how I became overwhelmed. But,
I was spending an average of 16 hours per day reading and
researching information on the Internet for my new online
business and reading & writing for my graduate courses and
consulting contracts.

After 2 months, I was at the point of desperation. Tired!
Agitated! Frustrated! Stressed! My body felt totally depleted.
Oh, the pressure! Too much to do, too little time to do it.

Was I ready to give up on my dream of owning my own online
business? No! Was I ready to give up on my dream of finishing
graduate school? No! Could I relinquish my consulting
contracts? No! I had to eat and pay my bills.

What could I do? Where could I turn? I knew I had to find a
solution.

Well, time management and prioritizing was not the answer. I
was successfully incorporating all of the tips, techniques, and
strategies that I learned over the years. And still I was
spending the majority of my day (about 12 hours) on what I would
consider NECESSARY reading. Not to mention the time that I had
to spend recalling, synthesizing, and writing (about 4 hours).

To make a long story short, I decided to solicit the advice of a
friend who is a Reading Specialist in our local school district
She suggested that I learn speed reading techniques.

Of course I had never heard of speed reading so I was a bit
apprehensive.

But then I thought...

What the heck! What could I lose?

She recommended Howard Berg's Mega Speed Reading. After filling
me in on the details of Howard Berg and his Speed Reading
Program, she gave me his literature and I ordered the program.
It came with an unconditional money back guarantee. How could I
go wrong? If it didn't work, I would send it back.

And the verdict is....

Wow! It only took me 4 hours to learn the techniques. Yippy! I
could speed read. Quick! Easy! It was actually fun. I was
ecstatic. I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry. It really
worked!

Within 2 weeks of implementing the Mega Speed Reading techniques
I cut my reading time in half. The program also taught me how
to increase my comprehension and memory.

I was able to read all of those web pages, ebooks, reports,
articles, and magazines in record time.

In a nutshell, I got more work done in half the time. There was
no more desperation, agitation, frustration, or stress.

I became a happy and successful entrepreneur.

What Did I Learn?

When faced with a challenge, don't give up.

Challenges will come (especially if you're starting a business).
You must overcome the challenge in order to be successful.

Face the challenge head on. Use your challenge as a learning
experience.

Don't stop until you find a solution to a challenge. Your
success depends upon it.

At the end of every challenge there is a lesson to be learned
and shared with others.

Spotting and Stopping the Ezine Spammer.
By Gordon King

If like me you run an Ezine or Newsletter you will have
been spammed by a few individuals who are abusing
the free ad ezines.

These spammers are easy to spot.

1/ They use a free, throwaway or fake mail box.
2/ They usually subscribe to the ezine and submit their free
subscriber ad in the same email.

Example email.

Hi
I would like to subscribe to your ezine.
my email address is fake@...

Here is my free subscriber ad (example)

Spam your way to riches and waste ezine editors time.
http://www.spamtheezines.com

I look forward to reading it.
Thanks,
Spammers name.

Or else an email will follow later with,

I notice you give free ads in your ezine. I have just subscribed
here is my ad.

Example ad.

Spam your way to free ezine ads
http://www.spamtheezines.com

To stop this I now reply to all these e-mails with a confirmation
of subscription request before placing their ad. None have ever
replied or else a failure of delivery email comes back with user
unknown or user over quota message.

You can also customise your confirmation email to include details
of how they can place their free ad.

Include an email link with a free ad code in this email so only those
who receive the confirmation email (and read it) get the free ad code
and can place ads. e.g mailto:me@...?subject=new_sub
This email link can tell you that you have a new subscriber who
is using your confirmation free ad link to place their free ad.

You can also use the same link as a free ad link in your publication
only this time change the subject to a word of your choice.
e.g mailto:me@...?subject=anyword
This link can tell you that a current subscriber has read the latest issue
of the ezine and is placing their free ad.

This also stops current subscribers abusing the free ezine ad.
If they don't use the valid code don't publish their ad.

Change the free ad code once per week and you will notice a huge
drop in bounce backs and mail delivery failures.

If you haven't already done so use a list server like Topica
http://www.topica.com who will deal with all your add and removes
so you are only sending your publication to genuine subscribers.

Do You Have Scary Thoughts About Terrorism? Anthrax? Bombs?
By Jan Tincher

When you think of all the things that terrorists do, do you get upset?
Do you visualize what you are fearing?

Let's say you "see" a terrorist throwing a bomb. Why not take control of
that thought and see the bomb dissolve? Do you see another plane hitting
a building? Why not see it bypass the building and materialize on the other
side, unscathed? The building the same as it was before? Do you see your
children disappearing before your very eyes? Make them reappear!

Something that has been popping into my mind continuously for the last few
minutes is ANTHRAX. And that's exactly how it popped into my mind --
all caps! So I kept it right there, in my mind, in the big letters, then I
saw
each letter slowly dissolve. I did that every time it came into my mind, and
finally it didn't come back. That's called taking control of your thoughts.
Did I want to think of ANTHRAX? No. Did I think I could do something
about it? Yes. Did I take the steps to do something about it? Yes. You
can too.

Do you have thoughts that make you shiver, wake you up in the middle of
the night, ruin your appetite, make you afraid to go out of the house?

Change that thought! How about from *I am so afraid I am going to die!*
to *I am so afraid I am going to die-- from jumping over the moon until the
cheese curdles!* Doesn't that thought kind of make you smile at the
ridiculousness of it all? If not, find one that does.

If a person yelled *Rape* and the person hearing it has been raped, what
do you think her predominant reaction would be? Fear! What would she
would be thinking? The same thoughts she's had ever since it happened.
What kind of pictures do you think she would be seeing in her mind? She
would be reliving the experience. What do you think would be happening
to her body? She probably wouldn't be able to move a muscle from the
fear. Why? Because she would be, in effect, reliving it by playing the same
pictures in her mind as she had before. Her mind is associating everything
as though it were real. What do you think would happen if she took charge
of those pictures she is making in her mind? What would happen if she
changed the outcome?

Let's go back to terrorists now. When you hear the word *Terrorist*,
what do you think? What type of pictures are you making in your mind?
What is happening to your body?

Let's see what we can do to change that. What type of picture are you
making? Is it big? Close to your face? Veerrry colorful?

If it is big, snap your fingers and make it small. If it is close, snap your
fingers and push it way, way back. If it is colorful, snap your fingers and
change it to black and white, a dull black and white.

Of course, if it's small, far away, black and white and it really scares you,
then just reverse it to big -- ridiculously big, very close -- ridiculously
close, and colorful -- ridiculously colorful. Work with your picture until
you no longer feel the fear. Take control of your thoughts.

Or how about this? The rape survivor could see a picture in her mind of
the rapist. Make HIM really tiny. See his tongue hang to the floor, his
ears flapping in the wind, his nose running -- actually -- make him run
away from her as he tries to catch up with it.

The goal here, believe it or not, is not to make fun of the rapist, the
terrorist, or anyone. That's not what we are about. What we are about
is taking control of our minds. They just happen to be in the picture,
making us laugh again, not so much at them, but at life and how we
could have always taken control, but we didn't. Silly us!

But, guess what? We are taking control now. If we can laugh when we
see a picture of the thing or person that USED to scare us, then we have
taken back control. The rapists, the terrorists, or whomever, no longer
are keeping us locked up inside ourselves.

If you look at the quote on my web page
http://www.tameyourbrain.com/index.articles.htm you'll see: *We are
in a war of the minds. If you don't take control of your mind, you lose
the war.* And wouldn't that be a shame? Especially when it's something
we can do anytime we want.

Whenever you feel yourself shudder out of fear, make a funny picture. If
you want to have control of your life, you need to take control of your
thoughts.

Live life to the fullest. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail
me at mailto:jan@... . I care.

Make You Ads Sizzle & Skyrocket Your Sales
by John Colanzi

Do your ads sizzle?

If you're like the average marketer they probably don't.
Read some of the ads that are in the ezines you read, or
the emails you receive and you'll realize how many of them
are just the same old, same old.

It's not just the average marketer that's writing bland un-
inspiring ads. Remember the big Dot Com ads that bombed
during the Super Bowl a few years back?

They thought that throwing big money out was the answer.

They thought being slick and cutesy was the answer.

They were dead wrong!

If you want to write effective ads, you have to keep in
mind:

* We all think in pictures

* When there's a choice between logic and emotion, our
   emotions always win.

* There are only two reasons anyone will take action.

   A. To move toward pleasure

   B. To move away from pain

No matter how complex or sophisticated you and I think we
are, deep down we all have similar hopes, dreams and
desires.

I remember growing up, how my mother instinctively knew
these rules.

My parents had a bar in the country.During hunting season,
all the weekend warriors would stop in our bar. They were
on their way to their big adventure and we were a stop off
point.

These city people were full of expectations of the big hunt
to come, but they also knew they would be out in the cold
and snow, hoping to bag their big game.

Once there were enough of them in the bar, my mother would
walk into the kitchen and start rattling the pots. A little
while later she would start simmering the soup.

You could see their faces react when they started smelling
that soup cooking.

But my mother wasn't going to leave anything to chance. As
soon as the soup started getting warm, she'd call me and
say "honey, you want something to warm your belly."

Talk about sizzle.

Then I would do my part, although at the time I didn't
realize what was going on. I'd say, "mommy this is good."

Well that was the clincher.

Those hunters weren't seeing just a bowl of soup anymore,
they saw:

<> Warmth to help fight the cold.

<> They were ready to experience, "country cooking."

Man alive she couldn't keep up with the orders.

She had just taken an everyday bowl of soup and made that
puppy sizzle.

How about you?

Do your ads sizzle, or do you just try to sell the same old,
same old?

Don't write the same boring ads, make your ads sizzle.
Make the reader picturize the benefits. Grab them by the
emotions and make their mouths water.

Start making your ads sizzle and watch your sales skyrocket.

Wishing You Success,

Please, forgive me, but today I am going to sound harsh. Just got
a note from one of the customers in my town. John owns a
landscaping business and 3 months ago decided to take his company
cyber. Well, guess what his today's note said: "Haven't got any
feedback from the web site so, please, close my account".

John has invested a total of $60 ($20 a month) into his web site,
and 5 minutes of his time to fill out the form. The web site was
automatically generated based on the information he put in, so
there is no extra work involved.

Then John just got back to his business, waiting to see what
happens. As many of you already realize - NOTHING HAPPENED.

No freebie was offered, no e-mail addresses were collected for
future contact, no special offers were posted... What exactly did
John expect to happen? Thousands of visitors to pour to his web
site? But he didn't submit his URL to any of the Search Engines
either. Nor did he promote his web site on any of the places
where his potential customers might hang out.

Or may be John was hoping to increase his bottom line through an
idle web site? Nope, not happening either.

You will be surprised how many people give up after 3-4 months of
having a web site, complaining that it's not bringing the results
they were hoping for. Some even go as far as spending the time
and money building the site, but then leave it alone and wait for
the sales to pour in.

I think I know what the problem is.

Many business owners think of a web site as just another ad. "I
have a web site, so now more people will know about my company".

But there is no magic in the air - to make a penny from your web
site you must not only build it but let the world know it's
there. Search Engines, directories, forums, newsletters,
articles, and freebies are only a few ways to do that.

Subscribe to a couple of online marketing e-zines and you will
have plenty ideas of how to reach your target customer. Sign
up for a free teleclass (teleclass.com) and get a chance to
hear how experts and other business owners market their web
sites.

Remember: there is no magic wand that will take your web site
and market it for you. Be pro-active. Do something every day
to promote your web site, and you will see the results from
your web site. Do nothing - and you will be the next "John"
asking to cancel his web site.

It's all in the metrics - see for your self.

I've recently seen some great developments in viral e-zine advertising

one system stands out from all the rest.

"It's genius, like most killer viral strategies lies in it's simplicity"

This unique approach to e-zine ad swapping works by the user (you)
agreeing to publish 4 ads in your e-zine every month, in exchange for
your ad placed in you down lines e-zine for 4 levels deep.

sounds simple doesn't it? .... well it really is that simple.

In real terms it means potentially millions of advertising impressions
monthly, and that's no joke, the math is simple, take a look and
work it out for yourself at:
http://www.systemsinplace.co.uk/viralezine/

If you can't be bothered doing the math, I've included my own case
metrics as tested on 6th November 2001 later in this article.

Back to the system...

The site very easy to navigate and like Start Blaze, it only takes about
1 minute to set up an account. Making it the highest velocity viral ad
propagator I've seen. For this reason it rapidly becoming the choice of
e-zine publishers all over the web including e-marketing legend Terry
Dean author "How to Start Your Own Traffic Virus" one of the original
viral traffic generating e-books.

~ Closed-loop - Viral Growth Model

The mathematical model for viral growth and decay within a closed loop
model follows the formula:

average number of referrals x average conversion (%) = x

where:-

x = growth factor per generation

if

x > 1 -- exponential growth occurs
x < 1 -- exponential decay occurs

~ Tested Metrics

Enough of the theory for now, id like you to take a look at the actual
results from the test I performed today..

Having rolled out to my own list I'd like you to take a look at the
metrics...you'll quickly realize not only why I've written this article
but also why I call it a viral super-conductor for e-zine promotion

- My average # referrals = 5315

- My average conversion rate = 0.85%

Plug these figures into our mathematical model and stand back in
amazement

5315 x (0.85/100) = 45.17

The massive 45.17 growth factor makes this system one of the most
contagious viral marketing tools I've ever seen.

~ Tips:

To use this tool most efficiently, I would advise adopting one of the
following affiliate or spiral branding strategies.

1) Most of the e-zines in your down line will not be targeted to your
audience, so the key is to communicating with the respective
publishers and finding out as much about their readership as
possible before they run you ad.

2) Find out which affiliate programs are producing the best results
for your down line sign up in second tier. Running a high performance,
well-matched program will bring far better results than a low number
of subscribers.

3) Try to find out what ad copy has worked well for the
recommended programs, and work smart, remember to contact
the respective publisher/editor about how to promote their favourite
affiliate program, they will always be happy to help especially if you
  are their second tier affiliates.

4) If you're happy reinvesting the results for virally compounded
long-term growth, ALWAYS use this amazing advertising opportunity
to promote the affiliate referral link for your favourite multi-tier
traffic builder or banner exchange - such viral feedback is the prolific
Marketers equivalent of "high return, re-investment"

~ Viral Feedback Loops

I prefer the StartBlaze and BannersGoMLM configuration, because
once the impressions are channelled out of the loop, BannersGoMLM
enables the ads to be targeted by industry.

Full details of this configuration, full details and tested banner gifs can
be found in the e-book ZenProfit under the article "how to create a double
viral feedback loop."

You Gotta Have Friends
by John Colanzi

There are so many marketers asking:

* Where should I advertise?

* How Can I draw traffic to my site?

* What should I sell?

These are all important questions, but after stumbling
around the web for years, making a sale here and a sale
there, I've found my business has been helped the most by
the friends I've made.

They have fancy names for it. Networking, Joint Ventures
and many more names I don't even remember.

The funny thing is I didn't do it for business. I started
out doing this as a hobby. It was a distraction from my
brick and mortar business.

I guess I was lucky. I could break even and enjoy myself.
As time went by I was accumulating a lot of friends.

It wasn't a concerted effort, it just happened on it's own.

Now if I have a question, or one of my valued newsletter
readers has a question, I can always find a friend that has
the answer.

When I first started writing articles, I first submitted
them to my friends. If I have a new program I'm promoting,
my friends are usually there to help.

If you truly want to build your business for the long term,
start by giving and you'll surely receive. Start by helping
and you'll be rewarded.

Don't do it expecting a reward, or keeping a tally sheet. Do
it as a natural course of your daily online efforts.

If someone has a question, help them. Don't worry about
what you'll receive in return. Do it because you love doing
it.

You friends will multiply around the globe. Don't force it,
let it happen.

Over time you'll realize the greatest asset your business
will have are the friends you've made.

I believe the Beatles said it best, "I get by with a little
help from my friends."

So can you.

Learn to give and you'll surely receive.

Wishing You Success,
John Colanzi

The Biggest Promotion Mistake. By Gordon King

Whether you run an online or off-line mail order business
one thing all businesses need are customers.

So how do you go about getting customers?

Well in the snail mail order business you could run ads in
business opportunity magazines, or you could go direct mail
renting mailing lists.

Online business works something the same you can post your
message on Newsgroups or Free For All sites.

To promote my latest opportunity I recently rented a mailing list of
200 fresh business opportunity seekers supplied on sticky labels.

Out of the 200 names and addresses at least 30 of them were regular
advertisers in UK business opportunity magazines, another 10 had
business names and addresses but the biggest surprise was finding
my own name and address on the list.

After I discarded the useless names I sent my offer to the rest of the list
and had a 0% response to the mailing.
The whole mailing had been a complete waste of time and money.

It wasn't until later that I found out why my response was so low.

I ran a small classified ad in around 10 business opportunity magazines
and small adsheets for a month and coded each ad to see which
publications were bringing in the best response.

I got a reasonable response from all the ads for up to two months.

After two months I was still receiving replies from these ads but
instead of further information requests these replies were filled with
business opportunity leaflets and had a sticky label on the envelope.

Someone was going through these publications and compiling a
mailing list and I could tell by the different codes on the labels to which
publication was renting my name.

To someone new in the business opportunity market this list could be
a make or break for their business but it showed me what a lot of
businesses online or off-line are doing wrong.

If you try to sell any product you run a better chance of selling it to a
buyer than another seller but a lot of direct marketers are promoting
their product to other sellers.

If you post a message to a Newsgroup or FFA site they are full of
other sellers and you usually get counter messages trying to sell
you something.

The same goes with mail order mailing lists they usually contain more
sellers than buyers.

It doesn't matter how good your product is or how good your headline or
promotion materials are, if your message is going to someone who is
already involved with a business opportunity you can be sure they don't
want another one.

In order to reach the real market for your product you must advertise
in any magazine or ezine that your potential buyers would read.

Create an advert that will invite potential customers to send for
further information on your product or service.

When customers reply to your advert save their names and addresses
to a database or address book and use these names to promote
your products.

These names have made the effort to contact you and have shown
an interest in your product so it is only a matter of time before they
purchase one or more of your products.

I have a confession to make.

There is no way will I ever buy anything from a web site that has
missing images or broken links. I mean, if this webmaster
doesn't care about his web site, he probably could care less
about his customers.

Getting your web site to look good can sometimes be a
hair-pulling experience. Even for me, and I have been making web
sites for over 5 years. I can only imagine how frustrated many
newbies can get.

Let me share with you some of the common problems in designing a
well-functioning web site. If you haven't made these mistakes
yet - trust me: you will! Keep this troubleshooting guide handy
for when you need it (and save some of your hair, too!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1.  MISSING IMAGES ON THE PAGE
2.  IMAGE LOADS VERY SLOWLY
3.  IMAGE LOOKS DISTORTED
4.  BROKEN LINKS
5.  TEXT IS MISSING ON THE PAGE
6.  VISITORS CAN'T SEE YOUR FANCY FONTS
7.  TOO MUCH HORIZONTAL SCROLLING REQUIRED
8.  THE TABLE IS WIDER THAN SPECIFIED
9.  WEB PAGE DISPLAYS OLD LINKS AND IMAGES
10. BACKGROUND DOESN'T SHOW
11. CAN'T ACCESS YOUR HOME PAGE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PROBLEM: MISSING IMAGES ON THE PAGE
-------------------------------------

SOLUTION: there are three things that might cause this problem.
You have either forgotten to upload the image to your web server,
didn't link to it correctly, or the graphic is in invalid format.

1) Remember, you need to upload all the graphics that you are
using on your web page, just like any other file. So if you have
a "services.html" page that contains "staff.jpg" graphic, you
need to upload both "services.html" and "staff.jpg" to your web
server.

2) You also need to reference that image correctly. For this, you
need to understand a little bit about files, folders, and
directories. Basically, a file is a document. A folder (or a
directory) is a collection of files.

You might have a directory on your web site called "images".
Inside it you might have the "staff.jpg", "logo.jpg", and other
files.

Now, here is the trick: if your HTML file is located in the same
folder with the graphic it contains, then here is how you refer
to that image:

img src="graphic.jpg"

*Please, note that I am leaving the tag brackets out so you could
see the HTML code.

So far, simple, right?

But let's say that your HTML file is located in the main
directory, while the graphic file is located in the
sub-directory. For example, "services.html" is located in the
root directory of your web site so that if you type
www.yoursite.com/services.html in your browser location bar, you
will see it.

And let's say that you placed a graphic used on that page into a
sub-directory called "images", so that when you type
www.yoursite.com/images/graphic.jpg into your browser location
bar, you will see that image.

So how do you refer to that graphic from your "services.html"
page? Here is how:

img src="images/graphic.jpg"

All I did was put the sub-directory (or folder) name followed by
a forward slash before the graphic name.

Finally, what if you put an HTML page into a sub- directory, but
leave the image in the main (root) directory? For example, your
"services.html" is located in a sub-directory called "pages".
And the graphic used on it, "staff.jpg", is placed in the main
directory, so that when you type this address into your browser
location bar, you will see it:

www.yoursite.com/staff.jpg

How do you refer to this graphic on your "services.html" page?
You use the "previous directory" notation like this:

img src="../staff.jpg"

The browser will then know, that in order to find that graphic it
needs to look in one directory below.

If you are having trouble understanding the above notation, use
absolute image references. For example:

img src="http://www.yoursite.com/staff.jpg"

Make sure you know where you placed your graphic (which folder)
and refer to it as if you were accessing it from your web
browser. That's it!

3) And finally, if you are not using graphics with the "JPG" or
"GIF" extension, they will not appear on your web page. Use
PaintShop Pro or any other graphic editor download.com) to convert
your graphic from any format to "JPG" or "GIF".

Broken images may also happen even if they don't have the right
extension. That's because they have been created in a
not-for-web format. When a graphic artist designs your logo,
remind her to save it as "RGB" (which stands for
"red-green-blue") or "Indexed Color" and not any other color mode
(such as "CMYK").

For more information, see "Choosing the right format for your
images" at http://tech.irt.org/articles/js206/index.htm

PROBLEM: IMAGE LOADS VERY SLOWLY
---------------------------------

SOLUTION: you must do your best to reduce the graphic to its
minimum good-looking format. Use GIFBot to do this:
http://www.netmechanic.com/GIFBot/optimize-graphic.htm

Some new webmasters use a large graphic and specify a smaller
size in the HTML code. That is absolutely unnecessary and will
slow down your web page three times or more!

For example, if you have a graphic that is 200x200 in size
(pixels), and insert it into your web page like this:

img src="graphic.jpg" width=100 height=100

..you are actually doing yourself disservice. Why not reduce the
graphic in your image editor first, then place it on your web
site? Doing this will speed up your site and will not distort
your graphic.

PROBLEM: IMAGE LOOKS DISTORTED
--------------------------------

SOLUTION: you probably specified incorrect size of this graphic
on your web page. To find out the correct size of a graphic,
right-click on it and choose "Properties" from the menu. You
should see the image size (something like 110 x 200) then put the
same numbers in the IMG tag:

img src="graphic.jpg" width=110 height=200

PROBLEM: BROKEN LINK
--------------------

SOLUTION: you must fix your link so it takes your visitors to a
page that exists. Links can be relative or absolute. Here is an
example of a relative link (remember, I am omitting the tag
brackets so you could see the actual code):

a href="welcome.html"

This link refers to a page that is located on YOUR web site, and
not someone else's. Now, here is an example of an absolute link:

a href="http://www.yoursite.com/welcome.html"

Notice that this link will take you to the exact same page that
the first one will. This is just a different way to build your
links.

You can also link to someone else's web site using absolute
links:

a href="http://www.yourfriendsite.com/hello.html"

Can you use relative links to refer to an outside web site? No.
Only absolute links can do that. And don't forget to use the
"http://" in each absolute link tag.

PROBLEM: TEXT IS MISSING ON THE PAGE
-------------------------------------

SOLUTION: this can happen for different reasons, but all of them
have to do with closing tags:

1) When a closing table tag is missing, the entire table content
might be missing, too. So don't forget to close all your TABLE,
TR and TD tags.

2) You forgot to close a comment and the browser "thinks" that
the rest of the text has also been commented out. Make sure you
close every comment that you open.

3) You forgot to close a quotation mark in a tag. For example,
if you use quotes in a IMG SRC or A HREF tags, you must close

them:

IMG SRC="picture.jpg width=100 height=300

The above code will cause the page to display incorrectly. Fix it
by adding a closing quotation after the graphic name.

4) If you using TEXTAREA in forms, make sure you close it with a
/TEXTAREA tag.

PROBLEM: VISITORS CAN'T SEE YOUR FANCY FONTS
---------------------------------------------

SOLUTION: do not use your fancy fonts. There are only a handful
of fonts that every computer user has installed. They are:
Verdana, Arial, Courier, & Times New Roman. If you try to use
some other font such as Impact or FreeStyle Script, and your
visitors don't have them installed, they will see your text in
whatever font their browser is set to.

If you REALLY want your visitors to see your handsome fonts, then
turn some of your text into graphics. Your graphics will be
displayed the same on every computer, and your visitors will be
able to see the fonts you meant for them to see.

PROBLEM: TOO MUCH HORIZONTAL SCROLLING REQUIRED
------------------------------------------------

SOLUTION: put your text into a table and make it no more than
85% in width and centered. This way, regardless of how large or
small their monitors are, your visitors will always see your text
centered with no horizontal scrolling necessary.

PROBLEM: THE TABLE IS WIDER THAN SPECIFIED
-------------------------------------------

SOLUTION: sometimes even you specify table width as 500 pixels,
it might still stretch to all 700. There are two reasons for
that.

1) You have a graphic in that table that is wider than the table
itself. Reduce its size and the table will shrink as well.

2) You are using a long URL somewhere in the table text. Shorten
it or remove it and you will see the table shrink to its
specified size.

PROBLEM: WEB PAGE DISPLAYS OLD LINKS AND IMAGES

SOLUTION: refresh (or reload) the page by clicking the button on
the toolbar of your browser. Sometimes the graphics are still
not being refreshed in which case you need to do this:

- right-click on the graphic
- choose "view image" or "open image"
- click "Refresh" when the graphic is displayed by itself

Now come back to your web page and press "refresh" button one
more time. You should now see the updated images.

Also, if you are using an FTP program to upload your files, don't
forget to click "Refresh" in the FTP window before uploading new
files. Otherwise, you will simply upload the old versions.

PROBLEM: BACKGROUND DOESN'T SHOW
---------------------------------

SOLUTION: make sure to upload your background image along with
the other files. Also, make sure you upload it into the right
directory (see "missing image on the page" above for more
information)

PROBLEM: CAN'T ACCESS YOUR HOME PAGE
-------------------------------------

SOLUTION: if you get an "access denied" error or a list of files
when you are trying to access your web site, make sure you named
your home page correctly.

Every hosting company has it set up so that the very first page
of your site must be named "index.html". Sometimes, though, they
will require your first file to be called "welcome.html",
"default.html", "home.html", or "default.htm".

There is only one way to find out: ask them! Or visit their web
site to see if they specify the default file name in their tech
support section.

Notice that "default.html" and "default.htm" are two different
files. You can name your files either way, but only one of them
will be accepted as a default one.

Make Your Experiences Better!
By Jan Tincher

Do you know how to take a good experience and make it better?

Look at the picture in your mind of what the good experience was.
In other words, relive it in your mind.

Now, when you've done that, look at how far away your picture is
from you. Not the actual happening, but the picture you are
imagining.

Bring that picture closer. Make it brighter. Put movement in it if
there wasn't any, and see if you like it better. Put sound in your
picture. Adjust the volume until you really like it.

Now, doesn't it seem as if the enjoyable experience was even better?

Now, how can you use that knowledge?

What about if you gave a presentation and you weren't happy with
it? What kind of a memory is that? Not good. So, now, instead of
looking at how bad it was, see how it *could have been.* When
you have that memory to fall back on, it will make future
presentations better.

See yourself giving a presentation now. If you enhance your picture,
you will feel much better about it. If you don't take the time and
effort to enhance your picture, chances are, you're imagining how
bad the next presentation will be, because of how bad it was. Now,
that's the picture you see, and that's the picture your brain will be
responding to. Right?

Work with all your pictures. Make your memories good.

Maybe some of you don't want to do that. Maybe you are saying
to yourself, *I need to see the mistakes I'm learning from. I need
to get real here.* Or whatever.

All I'm saying is, you are always looking at your pictures. Believe
it. If you don't take responsibility to change them for the better,
you will be accepting the *worse.*

Take responsibility for it. Doing that is the best measure of a
person's power and maturity. No matter how terrible a situation
is, you can represent it in a way that empowers you. Making a
past experience into an empowering experience helps ensure that
your future experiences will be better.

In other words, represent the past in a good light so that your
future has a chance to be good also. I think you can do it, and I
look forward to hearing from you.

Website Promotion Tips
by Gordon King

What is the best way to promote your website on the Internet?

FFA sites, Newsgroups, opt in lists etc..
You have probably tried all these different ways yourself.

FFA sites

I have a program that can submit my website details to over 1000
Free For All sites in a matter of minutes.

I just enter my website and email details and sit back and watch it go.
Later when I check my email I find that I have fifty to one hundred new
email messages trying to sell me anything from reports to another FFA
submission program.

As you know these messages are sent via autoresponders but does
anybody read the messages these autoresponders send?

I know I don't. I just delete them as soon as they arrive. But the most
annoying thing is that some of the autoresponders may send you
up to 7 or 8 follow up messages unless you click an unsubscribe link.

You are subscribed again the next time you post another message.
Usually takes 10 to 20 minutes to post to 1000 FFA pages but it can take 2
to 3 weeks sometimes longer to completely clear your email account of
counter messages afterwards.

Newsgroups

How many times have you posted a message in a newsgroup only
to find it missing an hour later or maybe not even making it to the
listing. If you do make it you are then swamped with UCE or spam as it is
known. There are programs today that can retrieve all the email addresses
from any newsgroup. It can sort these addresses for duplicates remove
false addresses save them all on to a notepad file to be imported into any
bulk email program. The bulk emailer can then post their message to all of
these email addresses in a matter of minutes.

I recently posted an ad in one newsgroup and set up a second email account
so I could see how much spam I would get from that one ad.

So far I have received over 30 spam messages and that was 3 weeks ago.

Opt in lists

I once tried opt in lists to boost my ezine subscriber mailing list with
disastrous results. The way they work is that you send your message to the
opt in list as long as you agree to receive all the messages from the
other members of that list.

To anyone who has never tried this way of promotion the first thing you
need to do is set up a second email account to cope with the flood of
extra email you are going to receive.

I was lucky because one of the Internet opportunities I was involved with
at the time had a website where you could download a free program that did
all the work.

The program subscribed me to all the different opt in lists on the
company's website. This takes over an hour as you have to return
confirmation emails from the subscribed address to prove that it was you
who subscribed.

I sent back all the confirmation emails and then got more emails thanking
me for subscribing with details of how I could unsubscribe.

Two hours later I had still not sent out my promotion message but I was
starting to receive emails from the opt in lists other members.

When I finally got my message out I had nearly 2500 counter emails in my
account. I immediately started to delete these messages as I feared my ISP
would close my account.

Next day I checked to see how many new subscribers I had gained.
A grand total of 5 new subscribers, but now I had over 12,000 (that's
twelve thousand) counter emails with sometimes 100 emails of the same
message to delete.

I started to panic and searched the Internet for programs that could
delete vast amounts of email with no success. I tried to delete them
manually but as soon as I deleted say 1000 messages another 1000 new
messages had arrived. I was getting nowhere. In the end I gave up as it
was costing me a lot of money and time to sit and download all these
messages.

Later on that day with nearly 40 thousand messages I called my ISP
and cancelled my account.

I now get a lot of my traffic from ezine advertising and free hits
that I receive from StartBlaze and No More Hits.

How To Brand Yourself On a Shoestring Budget
by John Colanzi

Have you spent hours on end trying your best to make money
on the internet and ended up empty handed. Trust me you're
not alone.

I've been there myself.

After running into a brick wall for years, I've finally
found what works for me.

If I were starting today and could choose one method to
promote my business and to brand myself, it would be writing
and submitting articles.

Why?

** It's Free promotion

** It's extremely viral

** It brands you fast

** Most marketers won't do it

Your articles are actually more than just free promotion,
they're free promotion on steroids.

Think about it?

What's the main feature of the average ezine? The featured
article. Get featured in an ezine and you're the spotlight
of that issue.

Get featured in multiple ezines every week and readers will
be saying, I see this name everywhere.

You're branding yourself fast and it hasn't cost you a dime.

Once you start getting your name recognized, the articles
will start taking on a life of their own. Have a few
webmasters pick them up and you're name recognition (brand)
keeps spreading.

It's truly amazing what article writing can do. After you've
been doing it long enough, readers will get the feeling they
know you.

There's not much chance of that happening from running an
ad. An ad is just one of many and gives no clue as to who
you are.

The fourth reason I gave for writing articles was, "Most
marketers won't do it."

If you're serious about your business and branding yourself,
there is one thing you should realize. You have to start
thinking out of the box.

Become a contrarian. Learn what everybody is doing, and then
start doing what they are not.

You're a unique individual and you don't have to follow the
herd. Birds of a feather may flock together, but the brave
eagle flies alone.

Get in the habit of writing and submitting articles and
hopefully, the next article I read will be yours.

Wishing You Success,
John

Do You Count?
By Jan Tincher

If you count, you can change your life.

Let's say you are doing exercises. Kind of boring sometimes, aren't
they? Let's say you have to hold your stomach in to the count of ten.
Instead of one, two, three, etc., how about doing this?

*I am get ting slim mer and slim mer now.*

*** Make sure you are seeing the picture you are *counting* to in
your mind, for each of these exercises. Really get into it, and you'll
reap the rewards faster and faster. ***

Let's say you are doing your eye exercises to the count of ten.

*My eyes are strong er and strong er to day.*

How about if you're putting rollers in your hair and have to steam
them a certain amount of time?

*My hair is look ing nic er and full er.*

How about if you are angry and you are counting to ten?

*I am full y and lov ing ly in cont rol of my states/ e mo tions.*
*** So you went over ten. What a way to go, huh? ***

How about if you're not counting to ten, but you have time you
have to fill?

How about if you are waiting for a traffic light to change?

*I am re laxed and pa tient. The light will change soon.*

Being on hold on the phone.

*I am re laxed and pa tient. They will be a ble to help me soon.*

You're working on the net, and the site is taking a while to come
up.

*I am re laxed and pa tient. My com pu ter is get ting fast er and
fast er.* Or my favorite, *I send out on ly good, I re ceive on ly
good.*

Because we all understand that if we think negatively, negative
things are bound to keep reoccurring in our lives. What you are
saying to yourself has a direct correlation on what is happening
in your life. Be good to yourself. Think positive, so positive
experiences can keep happening to you. And, believe me, they will.

What's My Name?
by John Colanzi

What's in a name?

The new catch phrase on the internet is branding. In the
80's it was called positioning.

What does it all mean?

When someone see's your name they associate it with your
products or services. Hear the name Bill Gates and you
think software.

Is your name really that important? You better believe it
is.

I think I first started realizing the importance of our
names when I watched Ali, after he'd changed his name from
Clay.

He always had a habit of mentally dominating his opponents
before they ever reached the ring. He'd get them so worked
up, that by the time the fight came around they forgot all
about their game plan. They were so upset they couldn't
even see straight.

Well Ernie Terrell got the bright idea that the best way to
get Ali upset and throw off his fight, was to use every
opportunity to call him Clay in the pre - fight interviews.

Did Ali consider his name important?

Did he position the name Ali with the term the "Greatest"
for a reason.

Yes on both counts. He was a master marketer. His product
was himself.

So what was the result of Ernie Terrell, calling him by his
former name?

Ali decided to spend the whole fight torturing him. Every
time he was ready to be knocked out, Ali would let up just
enough to cut his face unmercifully.

The whole time he was torturing him, he would taunt.

"What's my name?"

"What's my name?"

He knew the importance of branding his name. So if you're
serious about your business, remember Ali and you'll never
have to ask, "What's My Name?"

How can you brand your name fast? I'll save that for
my next article.

Wishing You Success,

AFTER THE WAR by J. L. Navarro (an e-book novel) is now available for download from http://www.mightywords.com  It is a surrealistic, unconventional novel in the tradition of Carlos Castaneda and Rod Serling.  The adventure takes place in a remote Mexican village inhabited by gunfighters and magicians and other strange and bizarre characters.  It's a quick and easy read.  Very entertaining for fans of fantastic fiction.  Due to adult themes, this book may not be suitable for younger readers.

WHY DON'T YOU WRITE A REALLY TERRIBLE FIRST DRAFT?
by Shery Ma Belle Arrieta <mailto:editor@...>

Anne Lamott wasn't so subtle about what she thought of first
drafts in her book, Bird by Bird. In fact, she started off by
writing, "Now, practically even better news than that of short
assignments is the idea of shitty first drafts. All good writers
write them. This is how they end up with good second drafts
and terrific third drafts."

I agree with her. First drafts are the roughest, and well, ugliest
drafts. Writers often fall into the trap of expecting themselves
to write shiny, perfect and very polished first drafts. What they
don't know is that terrible first drafts enable them to explore
different angles and find more ideas.

Here's what you do to start off with that terrible first draft and
end up with a really good final draft:

1. Write everything down the first time. Keep those boring English
and grammar rules locked up in your drawer.

2. Leave your first draft alone for a day or two.

3. Go back to your first draft and start crossing out unnecessary
ideas, sentences or paragraphs.

4. Become your English professor. I know this may sound terrible
but this is the time when you have to unlock your drawer and get
those English and grammar rules out.

5. Pick out your best sentence or paragraph and make that your
lead. Make sure your lead reflects or summarizes your article
or story.

6. Write your second draft.

7. Go over this draft and see if you can still edit anything out.
Firm this draft up.

8. Write your third draft.

9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 if necessary until you arrive at your best
draft. Your best draft is your final draft. This is what you'll submit
to editors.

10. Write another terrible first draft for another story or article
and repeat steps 1 to 10.

If writing an awful first draft is what it'll take to get that great,
final draft out, what are you waiting for? Write that terrible first
draft now!

ASK THOSE DUMB QUESTIONS!
(AND 15 MORE TIPS ON INTERVIEWING)
By Shery Ma Belle Arrieta <mailto:publisher@...>

As a writer, you will practically run into people and ask them
questions. In informal settings, you may or may not come
prepared and may just do impromptu interviews. But in cases
when you have to interview certain people, qualified people,
or people specializing in the topic you're writing about, how
do you go about interviewing him? Here are some pointers.

1. Make an appointment with your interviewee. You can do this
by writing him a letter or calling him. When you make the
appointment, always consider your interviewee's convenience.
Set a time and a place where your interviewee is least busy
and most comfortable.

2. Always, always come prepared. Know your subject. Know
his specialty.

3. Know your interviewee. Know his background, his position,
his personality, etc. You can do this by asking his friends and
acquaintances or reading past articles about your interviewee.

4. If you have set an appointment with your interviewee, come
on time. If you are meeting with him in a public place, it's better
that you be the one to come early and wait than have your interviewee
be the one wait for you.

5. Know the questions you'll ask. Ask dumb questions, not stupid
questions. Put yourself in your readers' shoes. They know little
about what you're writing about but you know that they'll be
interested in reading it. Ask questions you think your readers
will ask your interviewee.

6. Always be courteous. Be interested in the subject.

7. Don't spend your time writing down everything your interviewee
says. Learn how to pick up important points and jot them down. If
you could, learn shorthand.

8. Never offer your opinion unless you are asked to by your
interviewee. Keep in mind that you are there to listen and take
notes, not to give your opinions and show how knowledgeable
you are to your interviewee.

9. Maintain eye contact with your interviewee. Look directly into
his eyes when talking to him. Give off the idea that you are direct,
interested and sincere.

10. Never ask questions that will embarrass your interviewee or
put him on the spot.

11. Avoid close-ended questions. These are questions that are
only answerable by either a "Yes" or a "No." When you ask your
interviewee, he should be able to say more than a yes or no. Throw
questions that will make your interviewee keep on talking and talking.

12. If you are recording your interview, inform your interviewee
at the beginning that you intend to tape your interview. Ask him if
this is no problem with him.

13. Go over figures and names with him and make sure you get
them right.

14. Inform your interview what publication and when your interview
with him will appear.

15. Give your interviewee your contact number. Ask him if he would
like to have a copy of the publication where the interview will be
published.

16. Lastly, never fail to thank your interviewee at the end of the
interview.

It is best to write your interview story immediately right after
the interview. This way, the facts and your conversation with
your interviewee are still fresh in your mind.

You should also determine what type of interview story you are
writing -- a feature interview, an informative interview, an opinion
interview or a combination of the three. The important thing is
that you pick out all the pertinent materials in your interview.

You don't have to use all the materials in your interview, especially
if you recorded it on tape. Use your good judgment in sifting
through your material. Always ask yourself questions such as,
"Does this information support and help build up my story?" or
"Are my readers interested in knowing this bit of information?"

Be dynamic and descriptive in writing your interview story. Inject
action; describe your interviewee's mannerisms and gestures.
Show your readers his characteristic expressions.

Don't use direct quotes one after the other. Alternate it with your
narration. When attributing, use words other than "said." Some
words you can use: acknowledged, asserted, assumed, began,
explained, exclaimed, feared, grinned, grumbled, hedged, hinted,
implied, informed, insisted, protested. These are just some action
words you can use to give your interviewee depth and action.

YOU CAN HOUND EDITORS: WHAT YOU CAN DO
TO FIND OUT IF YOU'LL GET PUBLISHED OR REJECTED!
by Shery Ma Belle Arrieta <mailto:publisher@...>

Unless you submitted a solicited manuscript, in which case you
will surely receive a reply from an editor, the hardest and
perhaps the most agonizing part in the submission and publication
process is the waiting part. You're unsure if your submission is
going to be published and you'd be paid, or it would be rejected.

Editors are terribly busy people. They receive hundreds of
submissions on any given day, mostly unsolicited ones. What
can you do when you haven't heard from an editor yet on the
status of your submission?

Here are some tips:

WAIT A LITTLE LONGER! If you submitted a poem, give the
editor more or less three months to respond. For articles,
reviews, essays and short fiction, give them 8-10 weeks. For
books, wait three months.

THE PHONE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND! Call the editor. It's
quicker than writing a letter and it's more likely to give you
a response. However, make the call brief and straight to the
point. Don't take too long talking with the editor. Just mention
your name, the title of your submission and the date you sent
it. Then ask about the status of your submission.

LEAVE A MESSAGE! Sometimes though, editors won't take your
call. In this case, leave a message to the editor regarding your
inquiry, a number where he can contact you, and ask the editor
to call you back with an answer.

CALL AGAIN! If three business days have passed and still no
call from the editor, call again. If the editor is again unavailable
to take your call leave another message. If you don't hear from
the editor again after three days, flex your fingers and type
a short letter.

GO POSTAL! Some editors don't like phone inquiries. In this
case, you have to go postal. Make your letter brief, polite
and businesslike. Specify the title of your submission and
the date you sent it. If you ever want to hear from the
editor (which really is the purpose of writing this inquiry),
then enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope in your
inquiry.

IGNORED! You've called not once, but twice, and you've
already sent a written inquiry but a response from the
editor is still nowhere in sight. You have no choice but
to assume that you are ignored. Deliberately. Send your
manuscript to another publication.

A TENTATIVE RESPONSE! If, on the other hand, you
receive a call or a letter from the editor about your
inquiry and the editor asks you for more time to consider
your submission, agree with him but ask for a response
in a week or two.

RE-SEND! Your manuscript may have been lost or misplaced.
The editor may not have seen or read it and if he tells you
this, send him another copy.

FORGET ABOUT IT! If you think that you're being given
the run-around by the editor -- not returning phone calls,
not getting back at you after a certain time he promised
he would, several instances where the editor "loses" your
copy -- then pull out your article and find another editor!
