Thanks Marie,

I have found that to be true, it is frustrating.

marie saccoccio <saccocciom@...> wrote:
the names are often screwed up as we search from typed version and that typed
version is based on somepne's interpretation of what a scrivenor for the ship
manifest has entered. For instance, my maternal glandmother's name was Amalia
Sodi; I searched for a year trying all variations, or so I thought. I finally
did find some of her family entering under the name Lodi; the "S" was very
flowery in shape and someone thought it was an "L"; hence, Lodi instead of Sodi.
No fuzzy search could pull that.

Her first name was Maria . I mispelled Analoni, should be Analeoni , still
guessing. Her name was on my grandmother's marriage certificate as her mother,
this was in 1904 in NY. I have no idea if my great gm was in NY at the time of
her daughrter's marriage. I do know that in 1889 my grandmother entered the
first time in the US and she was only 12 so she must have been with her mother
too.

Thanks,

I found the Pugliese's restaruant and called it , however they are not
Puglieses, they just named the restaruant that after the town in Italy he said.
But what ever your mom says would be great. I looked up two hundred Puglieses
but it will take a while to contact all of them.

Hi everyone,

I found a way to obtain a summary of the catasto onciaro (the 1754
census) for the comune of Itri. The editor of the 4 other volumes
for other towns currently in print said he would summarize the town
of Itri for 1000 Euro. This means he'll do the research and type it
up so that it looks presentable like this example for another town:

http://www.onciari.net/terra_lavoro/prata_sannita.htm

I am looking for people to split the cost with. For example, if ten
of us are interested, then the cost would be down to a more
reasonable 100 Euro each.

The catasti would give us the earliest records available for Itri
and may allow us to extend out family tree out a couple of more
generations.

Let me know what you all think,

Ciao,

Jason Soscia

I sent him another message asking how quickly he could do it and waiting for a
reply. His name is Arturo Bascetta and his website is www.onciari.net. It
seems very reputable. Thanks to Vince Sandrone for his info a couple of months
ago about the catasti.

At today's rate 1 Euro is $1.19. So 100 Euro is about $119.00.

Dear fellow FraDiavolo members,

I hired a professional genealogist to research the Itri Census of
1754 for our ancestors' town of Itri. This census is called the
Catasto Onciario. I'm very excited.

He is going to type out for me from the Latin records the names of
every family living in Itri in the year 1754, along with ages and
occupations of every family member. I have agreed to send him 1000
Euro (about $1200) for his services.

My goal is to split this cost with at least 9 other people. With
nine people contributing, I would be able to send everyone their own
copy for only $120 each. This cost is much less than what the
Archives in Naples charges for photocopies of every page.
Obviously, the cost will drop even more with more people.

To put it all in perspective, thousands of letters are written every
year to the archives in Naples (where the records are kept) by
people requesting this genealogical information. From what I have
heard it may take months or years to get a response after sending
multiple letters. By doing it this way, he has started the research
already (today) and it will be done by the end of the month. A
neatly typed, clear list of every family in Itri in 1754 could be in
everyone's hands this summer!

The catasto is an invaluable resource for our research. It would
allow us to discover our earliest known Itrani ancestors. I have
been to both the Itri town hall and searched through the parish
records of Itri. None of that information goes as far back as
1754. Sadly, most of the old church records were destroyed by
bombing in World War II.

If anyone is serious enough about discovering their Itri family
roots and would like a copy of the 1754 Catasto Onciario of Itri,
please send me an email. I'm sure this rich archive of information
would provide us with a wealth of new discoveries for our family
trees. I'll keep everyone posted. Remember, the more people we
get, the lower the cost!

Tanti Saluti a Tutti!!

jsoscia3 <jsoscia3@...> wrote:Dear fellow FraDiavolo members,

I have started ordering the microfilms of Itri from the Family History
Center neaar my home. I have ordered 4, there are a total of 26. Is
there anyone who would like me to keep an eye out for a particular
name? I can't promise anything, but I am willing to try. Most of you
probably already went through them. I have never made the time yet.
Let me know. They have not come in yet. I will start with the most
current dates and work back in time. I will have the rolls for 6 weeks
at a time.

OK, corrected spelling!! the family name is Saccoccio and use fuzzy spelling if
possible. Also, given names should be Guiseppi, Angelo, and Francesca that I
know of. Grandfather was Guiseppi and I have seen that spelled differently
also. Also the surname Rugierri or Ruggierrio and also fuzzy spelling if
possible.

Thanks for your time and generosity,

Marie Elena Saccoccio

I think Guiseppe would have been DOB around 1883; his father and brother I
believe were both Angelo; so brother was around same DOB and father around 1860
but this is a real approximation; Francesca Saccoccio would be around 1860 for
date of birth also. Further as far as I know Francesca and Angelo, my great
grandparents died around 1904, simultaneously, in a carriage accident. that is
all I have there as grandfather married my grandmother here in Boston and
grandmother was from Terracina, not Itri. I do know that Ruggieri or Ruggierio
may have been grandfather's mother's family name and grandfather had those
relatives here in Rhode Island. I just have never been able to track the name
Saccoccio in Itri though when I was in Terracina many people told me that
Saccoccio is a well known name there and that family is in the oil business (
oil, as in olive, not fuel).

Angelo and Francesca had only two children - my grandfather, Guiseppe and
Angelo. Angelo never emigrated to this country so he would have died presumably
in Itri, or at least in Italy.

Hi Marie,

I started going through the microfilm. I was surprised to find very
few Fusco's, but there are many, MANY Saccoccio's. The births go up
to 1865, so I will search for Angelo Soccoccio with a Ruggeri/io for
mother. There are many Ruggeri's also. I've tried taking pictures
but they only come out good on one machine. And that one machine is
the only one that prints so it is a favorite at the center. The
picture came out decent but a bit blurry. I need to play with it
more. There are just SO many records on one roll. It will take a
while to go through it all. Joe tried to warn me, didn't you Joe!
But it is facincating to see these records that are over 100 years
old. I've done well with learning to read the Italian. The
handwriting at the time was very different. If I had not studied up
a bit I never would have found Fusco. The s was written sort or like
a j. Very different.

Oh, and Joe, I guess you will get this too, I found Francesco
Saverio Fusco's birth record. He was born December 6, 1853, and was
baptised on the 7th. He married May 17, 1885. I found some siblings
also. I don't have my papers here right now. I'll send you the info
later.

Take care everyone,
Teresa

I'll send you the info
later.

Take care everyone,
Teresa

Teresa,
The key to copying the records with a digital camera is use NO flash and Hold
the camera very steady, hold your breathe and slowly squeeze the button--don't
come down hard on it, and finally-very important--hold down the shutter button a
second more after you depress it. Most digital cameras have a shutter lag,
meaning the shutter doesn't operate immediately (like a film camera): you press,
the shutter waits a split second and then opens and closes and your picture is
taken.
You can retake them until you get it right.Believe me the digital camera is
easier than the copy machine if you going to put these copies in your family
tree on the computer and you have to as proof and support of the data you are
entering.

By the way my new and preferred (for you) email address is zicepo@.... I
don't give this out to many people.

Another thing; mark down the page number and the year of the document. This way
if you have to go back to one it is much easier to find. Also, If you come
across a difficult word ask me. An old timer told me the meaning a quite a few
of them that you don't find in the dictionary.
Good Luck
Joe

Hi Everyone,

Last month I sent everyone a message about some research I was doing.

I hired a researcher to summarize the 1754 Itri Census for 1000
euros
(about $1200). The researcher has started the work and sent me a
sample. It really looks great. I have offered to share the
research
will all of us as long as we all split the cost.

If all 22 members take part, it would be about $54 each. So far I
believe only Joe Fidaleo, Mary Saccoccio, Greg Pezza and myself are
interested. That is $300 each. I'd like to get at least 4 more
people
to drop the cost to $150 each.

If anyone is stuck at a dead end after exhausting the Mormon
records,
this is the next step. It is called the catasto onciario and lists
every FAMILY living in Itri in 1754 with every member in relation to
the head of the
family. Also included is occupations, ages, street name, taxes
paid,
and where the family lands, if any, were owned . Sometimes is there
are 2 people with the exact same name it will give the father's name
of each, in order to distinguish them.

Some of the research team are on August vacation now. So, I expect
by
the end of summer to have the research complete. I have already
paid
half the fee myself and will pay the other half in a couple of weeks
once he sends me more of the completed research.

If anyone else is interested please let me know. If you are doing
research on your Itri family name, this may tie together loose ends
left over after your FHC Mormon record research has hit a dead end.

Ciao and Buona Sera !

Jason Soscia

Hi every-one,
In response to the recent chain-letter/junk mail to the group - I am
sure that it was just an honest mistake from the person involved. I
have emailed him directly to explain the issue.

I thought it would be timely for people to understand how I manage
messages to the group.

When people join I personally review each and every message and allow
the related ones through to the group (usually within 1-2 days) and
delete the spam/ads etc.

The group is small (23 members) and I fight hard to keep out the junk
mail. I filter out an average of 5 real junk emails (not mistakes) per
week and then ban the real spammer from ever sending messages to the
group.

When each member has built us a history of genealogy related messages
then I change it so that the messages from that member get distributed
without my approval. This was the case for the sender of the junk
mail. Most members who have sent at least one message fall into this
category (I say most because I may have missed some)

So far this system has worked well - this is the first real junk that
has been distributed to members.
