Hi
I joined this group a few months ago but never posted. I am looking for
Forte's and Cardillo's from Formia area. My grandmother and grandfather moved
to France and wanted to stay there but could not get permanent residence. They
went back to Italy and eventually settled in Waltham Ma in 1905.
Grandfather-Alessandro, grandmother - Antonia. Any information would be
welcome.

I also have not heard of Elena, Italy and agree that a quick search leads you to Sant Elena.  This group is comprised of people researching their ancestors who came from Itri and Terracina and a few other surrounding towns.  I am from the Boston area and I do recognize the name Valente.  There were Valente's in Cambridge and also DeFazio's in Newton, though I do not know either families personally.   What specifically are you looking into??

Hi I saw your posting regarding "Elena".

I actually live in Itri and happen to know that "Elena" is an old town which nowadays has become included in the town of Gaeta.

I found this on Wikipedia Italia which explains everything.  I have translated it into English for you.

I hope this helps !!!

This is where we live:
http://trecancelle.shapcott-family.com

We have a Blog in which I regularly write about our life and adventures here in Italy.
http://trecancelle.wordpress.com

Also take a look at my SOUTH LAZIO WEBSITE which has lots of info and photos of this part of Italy:  http://southlazio.shapcott-family.com

Louise

Porto Salvo, or the Borgo di Gaeta, is an important district of the town of Gaeta.

The town grew up adjacent to the castle of Gaeta during the course of centuries, as a place of residence and employment of the population, who worked the land and sea.

The cultivation of olives (Gaeta olives are indeed famous) was important to the local economy through export. In the nineteenth century on the territory of Gaeta 6,810 bushels were dedicated to this crop. Rope was also exported, produced by sorghum high quality typical of the area. The shipyards, which are present in many places, resulted in a merchant fleet in town for centuries, and also the export of boats. The production was in crisis when the demand for large wooden boats declined.

Il Borgo di Gaeta, was separated from the St. Erasmus district, and by a Royal Decree of 15 March 1897, became an independent municipality. The push was given by liberal members: who sought autonomy from the ancient administration that remained from the Bourbon reign.

The town of Elena was named in honor Princess Elena, the future Queen of Italy.
By Royal Decree on 17 February 1927, after thirty years of division, following a major reorganization of the regional towns of Gaeta and Elena were united again under the name Gaeta.

Morning Group,

I'm wondering if anyone in the Group with CANNELLAs in their ancestry during the
last half of the 1800's has been contacted by a French company named
Coutot-Roehrig regarding a supposed estate left in France by two women nee
CANNELLA.

We have and the representatives of this company who have been in touch with us,
for the most part, have only spoken in generalities or regurgitated information
that is available to anyone via public trees.

So, I'm curious to see if others with CANNELLA in their lines have been
contacted. My paternal grandmother was a CANNELLA before marriage.

Linda,

I know that in January of this year that Francesco “Tony” Cannella passed away in Cranston.  He was a great guy.  Very poetic and devoted and had a lot of ties back in Itri.  You can maybe try calling his son Domenic who I believe lives in Scituate.  Tony’s father was Domenic “Mimi” Cannella who was bedridden for many years and Mimi’s wife was Rosalba (“Yola”) and both are deceased.  They were related to me through my grandmother’s Ciccone side.  If Domenic does not know, then his aunts are in Cranston may know.  Agnes DeLuca  married to Salvatore DeLuca or Cladia Ciccarelli married to Angelo Ciccarelli.  All are in Cranston.

Linda,

I have been in Law Enforcement for 26+ years and have seen many fall prey to these offers, don't let your judgement become clouded.
I would bet this is a scam, so be very careful as I would strongly suggest you do not "Verify your personal financial Information" to them and do not for any reason provide "GOOD FAITH" money to secure rights to an estate.

Yes it could be a legitimate organization, however someone may be using the company name for cover and may not have anything to do with the business it represents.

Thanks Domenic.

My post was more out of curiosity to see how many Cannella or Cannella
descendants this company might have contacted.

I wasn't directly contacted but my elderly cousin was. I'm not sure how they
found him since his surname is Cellemme not Cannella. I suspect maybe this
company & their minions have been harvesting information from publically
available sources such as trees at Ancestry & RootsWeb as well as Ancestry
databases of public records.

My thoughts are that perhaps they found my cousin through his granddaughter's
family tree which linked Cannella to Fornaro, then then a Fornaro daughter born
in France while the mother & her 1st child waited for dad to get out of Italy -
this was 1892 - 1893 when I understand there was a quota in place limiting the
number of people who could leave during a given time frame. Then that French
born daughter later married a Cellemme.

With the Itrani records on film ending in 1865, I'd have to find out who the
grandparents of Francesco "Tony" were since his father Domenic would have been
born after the filmed records end, to try and see if he was directly related to
my line of Cannella"s or another of the Cannella lines in Itri.

I keep hoping to run into some more Cannella"s who share direct ancestors with
me but so far no luck. It appears as if in my line of Cannella's, maybe only
my grandmother nee Cannella came over with my grandfather. And for reasons that
will never be known by me, they settled on Federal Hill rather than
Knightsville.

Thanks for the words to the wise Paul.

"Yes it could be a legitimate organization, however someone may be using the
company name for cover and may not have anything to do with the business it
represents" This was my initial reaction as well but after some exchanges, I'm
leaning towards an actual company gone bad or maybe always has been bad but
never caught red handed.

I've considered this a scam right from the get-go when my cousin's granddaughter
contacted me about my elderly cousin having been approached by this
Coutot-Roehrig company.

I've done a bit of digging and have been having fun playing with them.

They are evasive, speak only in generalities, keep trying to pump us for info on
other family members aka heirs and tell us nothing that isn't readily available
publically on line. Ah, but after we sign a contract then they'll tell us what
we seek.

Oh and I love that they want us to sign a power of attorney over to them as well
supposedly so that they can effect any sales of property in the estate, deal
with notaries in France on our behalf, etc. I don't know whether to laugh at
how ludicrous that is or be insulted that C-R would actually think/hope we're
that stupid.

I tested them with a red herring or two and they failed. They spun those bits
around and fed them back to my cousin's granddaughter in part, to try and
leverage her and her aunt, who has power of attorney for my elderly cousin, into
trusting them. Too bad for them that my cousin's granddaughter & his daughter
already knew about the red herrings and were just waiting to see if
Coutot-Roehrig regurgitated those bits back to them.

Maybe C-R is hoping we're naive or greedy or a bit of both. I especially liked
the email to my cousin's granddaughter where C-R tried to get him onboard by
telling them that many of the heirs had already signed contracts with them.

Let's see...Coutot-Roehrig keeps trying to pump her (and me) for info on the
family members aka heirs, have sent her a partial tree/list of family members
they have for our family which we know not only came from on line sources rather
than any bonafide research they may have done but is incomplete, contains errors
and omits some individuals. As evidenced by their failed attempts to sucker us
into divulging information on those members, C-R obviously knows nothing about
our branch of the family other than what is on line. Mever the less,
Coutot-Roehrig has stated to my cousin's granddaughter that those heirs have
already signed contracts.

Or maybe Coutot-Roehrig meant the descendants of the "brother" have signed
contracts except again, C-R knows nothing about this Cannella man and has also
been trying to pump us for information beyond what is on line for him & his
family.

This supposed brother of our female ancestor - my grandmother nee Cannella who
is the ancestor that is supposed to be the linking heir from two women who were
supposedly her sisters and the originators of this supposed estate, isn't my
grandmother's brother at all.

In looking at what Coutot-Roehrig fed my cousin's granddaughter about this
Cannella man, it was clear to me that everything they had on him came from a
series of posts I'd done back 2005 - 06 on him when I was looking at him as a
possible nephew to my grandmother. Back then, I was hoping to find this
Cannella man's father & hoping that father was a sibling to my grandmother.

In the interim since those posts, I've found siblings for my grandmother as well
as having found this Cannella man's father. His father was born 4 years before
my great-grandparents married so this Cannella man's father definately isn't one
of my grandmother's brothers.

And this Cannella man I'd posted on certainly isn't a brother to my grandmother
as Coutot-Roehrig claims him to be because my great-grandmother would have been
64 yrs old the year this guy was born.

All in all, it's a fairly sophisticated scam but still a scam. I've been
entertaining myself yanking Coutot-Roehrig's chain but it's become stale and
I've better things to do so won't be dealing with them any more. Both my
cousin's granddaughter and his daughter have also added the C-R addys to their
blocked lists and stopped bothering with them.

In posting here, I was just curious to learn if Coutot-Roehrig had tried to scam
any other Cannella family lines with this same story...two Cannella women
originally from Itri lived & died in France, their direct descendants left no
heirs so inheritance then switches to the siblings of these two women aka my
grandmother & her descendants and the Cannella man Coutot-Roehrig erroneously
thinks, apparently because of my old posts, is a brother to my grandmother and
his descendants.

BTW Paul, in my direct line I have a Caterena Capotosto b. abt. 1754 (not on the
1754 catasto, this yr figured from age at death) d. 7 May 1819 married to a
Pompeo Cardi. Does she show up in your Capotosto"s?

Hi Jason,

My problem is I don't know who there may have been in my family past 1865 other than my grandmothr and a younger brother, Benedetto Fornaro, of my grandfather's who also came to RI & settled on the Hill.

I sure do wish there was some way to access from this side of the Atlantic to those records in the basement of San Michelarchangelo that you mentioned gaining access to one time on an Itri trip.

The basement of the town hall has the records after 1865. The rectory of San Michele arcangelo has baptisms from before 1800. But last time I went to Itri I wasn't able to get to see the baptism records again-- the priest who let me see them my first trip had retired

Linda you might have to go to  Itri town hall to get any records after 1865

Thanks Domenic.

My post was more out of curiosity to see how many Cannella or Cannella descendants this company might have contacted.

I wasn't directly contacted but my elderly cousin was. I'm not sure how they found him since his surname is Cellemme not Cannella. I suspect maybe this company & their minions have been harvesting information from publically available sources such as trees at Ancestry & RootsWeb as well as Ancestry databases of public records.

My thoughts are that perhaps they found my cousin through his granddaughter's family tree which linked Cannella to Fornaro, then then a Fornaro daughter born in France while the mother & her 1st child waited for dad to get out of Italy - this was 1892 - 1893 when I understand there was a quota in place limiting the number of people who could leave during a given time frame. Then that French born daughter later married a Cellemme.

With the Itrani records on film ending in 1865, I'd have to find out who the grandparents of Francesco "Tony" were since his father Domenic would have been born after the filmed records end, to try and see if he was directly related to my line of Cannella"s or another of the Cannella lines in Itri.

I keep hoping to run into some more Cannella"s who share direct ancestors with me but so far no luck. It appears as if in my line of Cannella's, maybe only my grandmother nee Cannella came over with my grandfather. And for reasons that will never be known by me, they settled on Federal Hill rather than Knightsville.

I think we all recognize those last names  :-)

You should seriously go to the local LDS center (mormon church).   If you know your great great grandparents, the LDS will probably have their birth records on microfilm (probably before 1865) and you can go backwards to 1809 from there.  You can also check their website familysearch.org, but you will get more info thru the microfilms.  You could call the Itri town hall if you speak good Italian.  They have the records there too, going back to about 1809.  They also have the records after the 1860s.  The LDS only has from about 1809 to about 1865.  It would be easier I think to just order microfilm from the Mormon church and go through it yourself.  The Itri records are way down in the basement in that town hall and stacked every which way all dusty and some falling apart.  If I had the money I'd take a trip back there again just to clean and organize everything down there for them.

Ironically, I used the familysearch.org site for the first time after years of just letting things lie and found my grnadparents marriage cert online.  There I found family names I never knew of like Gionette and DiSauro or Disauro.  Amazing.  Both names are from the Terracina and Itri towns.

It's been pretty quite here but I'm wondering if anyone has anything on Maria
Civita SACCOCCIO, b. & d. unknown for the present.

A family member living overseas vacationed in Itri and obtained the birth atto
for our ancestor Maria Rachele CANNELLA.

Without access to records past 31 Dec 1865, we in the family originally
though(but couldn't prove) that Maria Teresa CARDI, wife of Luigi CANNELLA, was
Rachele's mother

It now appears that Luigi CANNELLA (b. 17 Mar 1821 Itri & d. Aft. 1868 Itri) had
two wives: Maria Teresa CARDI whom he married 08 Sep 1849 in San
Michelarcangelo, Itri and the newly discovered Maria Civita SACCOCCIO, mother of
Rachele.

As of 31 Dec 1865, date of the last of the Itrani records available to us on
FHL films, Luigi was still married to Maria Teresa CARDI(b. 05 Feb 1822 Itri)
with whom he had the following children:

Antonio b. 12 Jul 1851
Giuseppe Maria Orazio b. 05 Jun 1854
Francesco b. 21 Feb 1858
Maria Teresa b. 23 Dec 1861

Sometime after 31 Dec 1865, Maria Teresa Cardi must have died.

Based on the DOB of Luigi's daughter Rachele of 27 Jan 1869, Itri, Luigi must
have married 2nd wife Maria Civita SACCOCCIO sometime around or before May 1868.

Does anyone have Maria Civita SACCOCCIO in their tree?

Linda

Indeed, it has been very quiet.  I would love to hear about any Saccoccio's from Itri.  Grandfather, Guiseppi Saccoccio, emigrated from Itri, leaving behind his only sibling, a brother.  His parents died in a carriage accident there.  So, we do not know much of his family at all since his closest relative never came here.

All I know so far is what I posted.

It's going to be quite awhile before I can find the time to look at the Itrani films at my FHC so in the meantime I was wondering if a Maria Civita Saccoccia married to a Luigi Cannella was lurking in the branches of anyone's tree.
