I wrote to Itri to get some birth records a few years ago.  They were very accommodating.
They stamped the official seal on them without even my asking.

I need to request a copy of my grandfather' s birth record from Itri for use in obtaining my Italian citizenship jure sanguinis (through ancestry). All of the Italian language form letters that I have found on the web are written for genealogical purposes, not legal. I am looking for the proper Italian phrasing so that I get the legally accepted certified version of the birth record. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It has been some time since I have placed a message on this site. Life has been
pretty hectic this past year or so.

My name is Louis Saccoccio. I was born and raised in Cranston (Knightsville)
Rhode Island (USA) where many immigrants from Itri settled in the late 19th and
early 20th centuries. My grandparents, Michele Arcangelo Saccoccio and
Arcangela Stamegna, came to the US in 1912. In the neighborhood of Knightsville
the family names were (and still are for the most part) Saccoccio, Sinapi,
Ruggieri,Pezza, Mancini,Cardi, Manzi, Matrulo, Maggiacomo, Ialongo, Agresti,
etc, etc.
As some of you may know, the Sinapi brothers own and operate "Bar Appia" in
Itri. They lived in Knightsville for about 25 years and returned to Itri.
Obviously they are fluent in English and are a great resource when you visit.

Some of the names in my family tree include Felice Saccoccio born in Itri in
1849. His mother was Maria Saccoccio who was the daughter of Bambino Saccoccio
and his wife Maria Schiapo. Other names that appear in the line of descent
include my great grandmother Filomena Danella and others such as Loretta Picano,
Marianna Tuccinardi, and Guiseppe Grossi - all born in Itri (mostly spouses of
Saccoccio ancenstors.)

Hi Louis,

I was wondering if you have ever come across a Lucia "Lucy" Saccoccio.
She was born in the mid-1860's in Itri, married Luigi Ruggieri and moved to NYC
in 1898.

Robert Schaefer

No Robert I have not come across Lucia Saccoccio but I grew up knowing a large
Ruggieri family. I don't know if they have traced their family background.
However, I see several of them every year on St Mary's Day (the feast of the
Madonna della Civita) which is still a large feast celebrated in Knightsville
every July as it is in Itri and will ask them about this person.

I am going to Itri soon.  Does anyone know the best place to rent a car?  Should I rent one at Fiumicino and drive it down to Itri?  Or is easier to get it at Formia so I can drop it off there when I leave and then just take the train back up to the airport.  I think I would rather do that, and if so, where in Formia (is there a place near Formia station?) should I go to rent it?

I just returned from Itri and this was our itinerary...

Train from Fiumincino to Termini  E10.00
Train from Termini to Formia       E11.00

Hertz Rental - Panda 4dr.  for 48 hours ....quoted price of E137.00 with a discount using Delta...they will take AAA (make your reservation with Hertz International before you leave the US...using the 1-800 phone number.
After we returned home and I checked my bank acc't...we were overcharged approx. $40.00 - but I am checking on that.

Hertz is located at the Formia Treno Stazione....there is a cafe - for your wait.
If you call Hertz...check on renting from Fiumincino and the cost.  I think you would get a better rate based on a "7 day rental" or a 14 day....  I don't know how long you are staying....but the drive from the  Airport to Itri is quite pleasant.
Are you staying with family....?  if not...IL GROTTONE Restaurant and Hotel is very clean, friendly and accommodating...also...tell them Frank Ciccone referred you.  They're my cousin.

Buon viaggio...how can you not?

Hi everybody,

What is the best way to use a cell phone in Italy?  Should I get one here with the SIM card or buy it there?  Also, where is a good place to buy and unlocked cell phone and SIM card?  I don't want to use my current cell phone (plan with AT&T) as it would be too expensive.

Thanks,

Jason

Hi Jason;

Here's a bit of what happened last year:
Trying to get a phone here (Florida) to use in Italy was getting to be impossible - With all the phone carriers here, checking them all out, comparing prices and equipment - it was getting to much...so someone at Verizon told us "buy and International phone - they sell them at the airport,,,you can get one in Rome or New York, where ever,,, that's the best way to go.
So, we thought that sounded do-able.  We got to Fuimincino and didn't see any phones for sale, so we just purchased a "phone card" for E20.00.  Got to Itri and for three days we tried to call my kids in the U.S.  It never happened.  We know where every pay phone in Itri is located.
We drove to Calabria and tried calling several people in the states...it never happened.  We know where several pay phones are located in Calabria.
We got to Naples a week later where Frank's cousin seemed never to shy away from a challenge.  It was impossible to use the card.  It was only good when calling from a hard line phone.

So, this year we decided to have a phone with us before we left the country.

After doing some extensive research, we purchased a phone from MOBAL.  It is from England and is used while in Europe (or some 120 other countries)  The Phone was 49.99 with a free gift of international adapters for elec. outlets.  The phone can not be used in the U.S.  It is strictly for "overseas"  BUT you can call from Europe...anyone in the U.S. or anywhere in the Western hemisphere.
The charges for calls were minimal - the service is great and the reception (sound and clarity) was excellent.  When we got home, we simply removed the battery and packed all the parts back in the box so that it will be ready to use for our next trip to Italy.
I hope after this long-winded story, I've helped you a little and if there's anything else we can help with...let us know....(321-952-6888)

The easiest is to pre-rent from AutoEurope.com - they are zn 800# here in Maine
and their price includes all insurance -if you get caught driving without
$1million in insurance, it's big trouble in Italy. The cheaper prices with
AutoEurope are all inclusive so that is good - also there is about $50 in a road
tax and that is preincluded. For example, a 20 day rental was under $800
including everything!

You might double check because someone else told me the AT&T charges are only a
few dollars a month to use overseas - I am not sure... but we are on AT&T also
and used our phone a couple times - the roaming and toll charges were around
$20. We had used a TIM card in our phones last trip but this time the card would
not work - TIM said it was due to a need for an unlock network code - so rather
than go crazy trying to figure that out, it was easier to buy a cheapo phone
from them - for 100 Euro we bought a phone, an electric charger, a car charger,
and somewhere around 65 Euro in airtime. We still have 15 Euro left on the phone
even after using it for at least one call every other day to the US in addition
to all the calls to family in Italy.

Hi Louis - my husband is from Itri - his cousins live in Cranston - as did a
brother in law and my husband for a short while.
Are you by any chance related to Felice Saccoccio who works in Vital Records at
the Commune di Itri? He is a fantastic fellow who was very helpful with us
verifying some of our personal records as well as helping with family research.
Felice has known some of the folks in our family since they were all kids
together. We just got back from Itri ourselves.

Hi Bonnie

I am not sure if we are related but I am trying to find out. Its a coincidence
that I discovered his name on an Itri website and sent it to my cousins. Their
father, who was my father's oldest brother, was named Felice Saccoccio and I
thought they would get a kick out of it which they did. My wife and I have been
to Itri twice, the most recent time in 2006 on St. Joseph's day which is a big
celebration it Itri. I met a young man from Itri on line named Rubino Saccoccio
who is very active in an Itri website but now lives in Lucca. When in Itri we
dined with Rubino and his family. Rubino's father is Renato Saccoccio. We are
also trying to determine if we are related. We all came from Cranston (the
Knightsville section) Who are your husband's cousins who live in Cranston - I
may know them.

These are all familiar names, particularly DiSegna and DiFusco. I went to the
same parochial grade school (St Mary's School in Knightsville)with a Cheryl
DiSegna. Her cousin Tom DiSegna is a lawyer with an office in Knightsville. He
was an assistant solicitor for the city of Cranston for a while. There are also
many DiFuscos in Cranston.

Do you have an e-mail address for Felice Saccoccio in Itri?

Hi Kathy, So you have recently been staying in Itri?
We currently have Jason Soscia of the Fra Diavolo group staying here during his
visit. It was a pleasure to meet him at last as we have corresponded in the
past.

We actually live in Itri. You can see where we live at our website:
http://trecancelle.shapcott-family.com. Here you can find lots of info / photos
regarding Itri and South Lazio

We are an English Couple. We came to this part of South Lazio on holiday
several years ago and fell hopelessly in love with the area around Itri. In
fact we liked it so much that this was where we chose to start our new life. We
have been here for 4 years now.

We bought a deserted farmhouse which we have renovated and made into 2 holiday
apartments. It is set amongst our 8.5 acres of Olive Grove which had about 600
olive trees. We are about 3 or so miles from the centre of Itri. Here in Itri,
surrounded by mountains in the peace of the countryside we have the best of both
worlds, Itri and the mountains and the beautiful coastline and beaches of
Sperlonga, Gaeta and Formia.

You can read our news on our Blog: http://trecancelle.wordpress.com

Would love to keep in contact with you and keep in touch with others who are
also passionate about Bella Itri !!!

Anyway, Ciao for now !!!

Louie and Paul

Hi Kathy - my husband Valentino and I just returned from ITri - we go almost
every year as all our family are still in ITaly with many still in Itri! For us
it is the most perfect blend of old and new in villages that are now "all grown
up"! Please stop by my blog Amore e Sapori di Famiglia on wordpress - I post
quite a bit about Itri! BTW - Annette and her husband Frank also just returned
from Itri - they too travel there frequently.

Hi Louie & Paul,

Thank you for reaching out & letting me know about your site. We live in U.S.
but travel to Itri to visit my boyfriend's parents - Torelio & Maria Agresti.
Do you know them? We were in Itri for March to May. I wish we would have known
about your living there. We would have stopped by & introduced ourselves.

I will certainly check out your website. And I hope to keep chatting with you
also.

You are certainly right when you say "Bella Itri."

Take care,
Kathy

My husband's family includes some Agresti's - not sure where, I would have to
check out the files - ha. But the family do know some Agresti folks now too. Is
Maria Civita related to Sal M. from Cranston? We were there for April.

I will have to ask Val to be sure but the name is familiar - Val worked for a
Sr. Agresti in a bakery when he was young in Itri!

Looking to trace the Agresti surname back to Itri or Fondi, Italy. My father
and I were both born in the United States; however, we've traced our family
heritage back many years to these two cities.

Please let me know if you are an "Agresti" and have an family tree that we can
compare.

Thanks,
David Agresti, Los Angeles, CA United States.

all related.

Hi,

I'm new to the group, and I'm researching the Ponticelli name.

My name is Ralph Ponticelli, and my great-great grand parents
Antonio Ponticelli and Giovanna Amadio, were married in
Avvocata, but there were at least three of their children that
were born in Gaeta.

Ponticelli has been spelled many ways. It was usually spelled
Ponticelli, or with an "e", "o", or "a" at the end. There were some
unusual spellings, Pinticelli, Ponticella, and Pinticello, and
sometimes there was an "h" or a "d" thrown in the middle.

I'm sure you've experienced the same. The way I look at it, it
was up to the scribe who documented their name.

I have the birth records of, what I believe to be the last three
children born in Gaeta, and I thought it would be a good idea
to send for a "Certificato dello Stato di Famiglia". I'm hoping
this certificate would provide me with information on the entire
family.

Now after that verbose introduction, I was wondering if anyone
has sent for this document? If you have what was the address
and possibly the cost?

And by the way, is anyone familiar with the name Ponticelli.

Sincerely,

Ralph Ponticelli

it so much that this was where we chose to start our new life. We have been here
