Rebecca,

Where are you from? There are some Belcastro's in Medford, MA.

It's very funny. My mom's family is from Itri. Her brother, my uncle Mike
Pezza (birth name, Michele Pezza), married my aunt (maiden name Merandi (father)
and Quattrucci (mother)), who is Calabrese, and her family was from San Giovanni
in Fiore, Calabria. I know at least one of her parents was from there. Judging
by the way people met and married 80 years ago, both of her parents were
probably from there. She was born here, though. She is in her late 70's and
Mike Pezza is in his early 80's. Quite a coincidence.

Awhile back on another group, I mentioned that my father told me our
BELCASTRO family nickname was Lucifer. Whew! What a nickname. Anyway,
another
member of the group from San Giovanni In Fiore, Cosenza, Calabria, wrote back
and
said that is because I am ?descended? from Michele PEZZA a/k/a Fra Diavolo.
After reading his history, I am relieved that this is the nickname source.

Apparently, Michele PEZZA spent time in San Giovanni in Fiore during which
he ?married? a local woman. Since my BELCASTRO ancestors are from that same
town, and if, indeed, the above is all true, can anyone in this group give me
more information regarding this connection? Any information. Thanks so much.

   Rebecca Belcastro Drummond

After arriving from San Giovanni in Fiore, my family settled in West
Virginia and Pennsylvania. Of course, we are now spread out all over

Rebecca,

From what I remember, my aunt's family first went to Pennsylvania and her
father, Peter Merandi, worked in the coal mines. Somehow, they later settled in
East Providence, RI, which is where my aunt and uncle live.

Hello,
I would go to Google and put in Michele Pezza and you should find a 7-or-more
page story on him. I have read it and printed it four or five years ago. I just
don't remember the site. Also that's the way I find his story. I might have gone
to Google and changed the language to Italian and that I do often when I am
researching something Italian. But this, I am pretty sure, was in English.
take care
Joe

Hi all.
I found this group by accident but I am glad I did. I am related to
Domenic and Greg.. I am from Cranston RI and both my parents are
from Itri. Even though, Domenic and Greg's Grandmother was my great
aunt, my sisters and I still called her grandma Pezza.

My niece got married, to a Saccoccia, in itri this past summer on
the 4th of July and she has been living there for the last few year.
My father, my sisters and their families and myself travel to Itri
for the wedding.

While in Itri, I heard stories of how my mother and her brothers
and sisters where hidding in caves during World War II as the
americans where bombing the town trying to get rid of the German
soliders from the town. After the germans where pushed out of the
town, an american solider came into the caves looking for his
cousins, my mother and my aunts and uncles. That solider was my
Uncle Joe, Greg's father. I never heard this story until this past
year, Just wondering if u had heard about that Greg.

My maternal Grandmother's madien name was Capotosto. I have an uncle
that married a Soscia. Other last names that may not have been
mentioned are Ialongo, Agresti, Cardi.

Well, I dont want to keep rambling
Ciao for Now

Hello.....

I belong to the 'group' and am wondering if you know of any Ciccone's from
Fromia. My grandmother's maiden name was Ciccone (Elvira) - she, two sisters
and a brother came to America and settled in the New York area.

Thanks,

Hi Lou!!! So what is your, Gregıs and Domenicıs last name? My husbandıs (and
therefore mine) is Tuccinardi, from Itri. I am told that there are several
Tuccinardis living in RI. I havenıt had any luck hooking up with them to
find out our connection (of course I am assuming that all Tuccinardis are
related!!!). Anyway, The Saccoccia last name along with Ialongo and Agresti
are of interest to me. You can visit my website below and see the other
names that I am interested in. Letıs see if there is a connection somewhere
along the line. I am going to forward your email to someone else that has
family in Itri. Hope to hear from you soon!! Judy

Hi Jason,

That is my uncle and Dino is my cousin. Lino's sister married my
Uncle Tony, Constantino's brother. Dino's father and my mother are
brother and sister.

There is a Soscia in my condo complex who is also related to Maria
Soscia. I forget her first name, but her father remembers my mother
and has told me about the relation, In fact, his wife is buried
right next to my mother in St. Ann's Cemetry.

Hi Jason,

This is the second time trying to reply to this so If its duplicate,
Please forgive me. It was nice to hear from you. Dino Ciccone is my
cousin. His father and my mother where brother and sister. Lino
Mancini's sister married my Uncle Tony, my father's youngest brother.
And I go to his house to go see the St. Mary's Feast fireworks. The
Constintion Del Bove, you refer to, is my uncle, my father's oldest
brother. Also, there is a Soscia that lives in my Condo Complex here
in West Warwick, and her father tells me that he is related the Maria
Soscia that married my uncle. Also, his wife is buried right next to
my mother in St. Ann's Cementry.

Hi Judy,

What is your husband's first name? Also, where are you from? I know there are
Tuccinardi's in Montreal. I visited them over 20 years ago with my Uncle Joe
Pezza, which is Greg's father. I am Greg Pezza's first cousin and Lou DelBove's
mother was my mother's first cousin, which also makes us cousins. My last name
is Livoli, my mother is a Pezza. Let me know.

Judy

My hubbyıs first name is Thomas. The Tuccinardiıs are from Itri then to New
York City (specifically Long Island). A few I think went to PA and maybe NJ
but most stayed in NYC and evirons. I have heard that there are Tuccinardis
in Montreal but am not aware of a connection to them but then I donıt have a
lot of information on them. The surnames of DelBove, Pezza and Livoli are
not familiar to me but like I said, I never say never when it comes to
family history! j

Hi Domenic,

There's more coincidences to "our" little story here. My husband was
born in Providence, lived on Fairlawn Street in Cranston and worked
in East Providence for Nicholson File Company YEARS ago. Our
daughters were born in Warwick. Small world, huh?

I also was e-mailing with your ?cousin? Gregory Pezza trying to find
answers to my genealogical questions but have not gotten anything
firm in response. Frankly, I think any Belcastro-Fra Diavolo
connection may not be there but I still need to explore the
possibility to keep my lines going.

Genealogy is one of my first loves. Through the computers at the
Mormon Library I was able to take my husband's lines back to 6 A.D.
Of course, I have no way of verifying most of the ancestry (don't
have enough years left to live to do it!) but I will work on at least
verifying it back to 1620. This is all through his mother who was
from Maine.

It's much harder to do my Italian side since I don't know the
language and a lot of it is in Latin. I have the following names in
my ancestry: BELCASTRO, FAZIO, RISTOPOLI, NICASTRO, TIANO, MAZZEI,
MARONE, IULIANO. This is all I know about it. Except for FAZIO and
RISTOPOLI, they were all from San Giovanni in Fiore. However,
they're all from Calabria. I used to think (before genealogy) that
we were just Italians, always Italians, but it is fascinating to find
our what groups made up Calabrians--way back. I'm going to do the
Calabrian DNA project once I get my act together.

See, I told you I love genealogy.

Hi Rebecca,

Through all my research I still have not found any connection of Fra Diavolo
to the BelCastros. He was only in Calabria briefly and during his campaign.

To change the subject I have some interesting news. My Grandmother on my
mother's side was a Branca originally from Lappano but grew up in San Giovanni
in
Fiore. My mother remembers growing up before the war and spending summers in
San Giovanni in Fiore. And the family they spent it with were the BelCastros.
If fact my mother and father honeymooned in San Giovanni in Fiore and stay at a
Belcastro home. She is trying to put the names together. Since she was really
small then she does not remember much. What she remembers in tons of boy
Belcastros and very few if any girl Belcastros. Her brothers always had plenty
of
friends when they were summering. My mother and her sister mainly played with
each other. Another name that is predominant is Scarpelli in San Giovanni.

In reading my Great Great Grandfathers diary, which is difficult because of
the Calbrian dialect he refers a lot to Nicastros. My mother was a Tucci whose
father was from Marzi near Cosenza. He married Magarita Branca from San
Giovanni.

I have many pictures from the 30's and 40's from San Giovanni. My mother
points out that this one is a Belcastro and that one is a Belcastro but cannot
remember names. I am working on this end to connect the dots. Can you shed any
light on the subject?

Thanks Gregory Pezza (Tucci, Ciccone, Branca, Mustacchio, DelBove, Barberio,
Meschino)

   Welcome Louie,

Give me a call at 539-0999 work or 213-6258 home. I have a lot on the
Ciccone's, Del Bove and of course Pezza. Just to let you know our Great Great
Grandmother was a Capatosto. Also we are direct to Meschino's and Matrullo's.

Hope to hear from you soon.

   Cousin

   Greg

Hi every-one,
I am going to trial allowing files to be sent to the group as a few
people have previously tried to send them and they have not got through
as I had them switched off.

I will keep an eye on how the trial goes as I am concerned about overly
large files being sent and affecting people's inboxes especially those
that may not be intereted in the file. Many people still use slow dial-
up connection and there is nothing worse than waiting an hour to
download a file that does not interest you.

Happy New Year to all. Finally got a new, fast computer to replace
the old, s l o o o w & annoying laptop so I decided it would be a
good way to break in the new 'puter by finally signing up.

My grandparents, Guiseppe FORNARO and Rachela CANNELLA came from Itri
in 1893 and settled on the Hill in Providence. Of the various places
they lived on the Hill as their family grew and needed more room, none
exist today. All seem to have fallen victim to either I-95 or the
6-10 connector. The last place they lived and where I spent my years
until 1959, was Tower St. which was located roughly between the
southbound lanes of 95 and the Atwells Ave off ramp.

Sadly, I never knew my grandparents. Rachela passed in 1930 and
Giuseppe in 1941, both before my parents even met.

I've found the following individuals in my line so far:

Giuseppe b. 1865 d. 1941 & Benedetto b. abt 1876 d. 1948 FORNARO s/o
Antonio FORNARO & Maria Grazia DI VONA m. 28 Nov 1852

Antonio FORNARO b.18 Jan 1824 s/o Francesc'Antonio FORNARO & Maria
Tomasina DI LUCA m. 10 Feb 1823

Francesco Antonio FORNARO b. abt. 1797 s/o Benedetto FORNARO & Maria
Loreta SINAPI

Maria Grazia DI VONA b. abt. 1830 d/o Giuseppe Antonio Vincenzo DI
VONA & Maria Civita Angela SOSCIA m. 30 Apr 1826

Giuseppe Antonio Vincenzo DI VONA b. abt. 1800 s/o Crasmantonio DE
VONA & Chiance SIMONELLI

Maria Civita Angela SOSCIA b. abt 1805 d/o Giovanni SOSCIA & Maria
Giuseppa STRAVATO

Maria Tomasina DI LUCA b. abt 1800 d/o Crasmantonio DI LUCA &
Magnifica SUPRANO

My CANNELLA side is a bit shakey and less certain since my grandmother
Rachela was born after 1865 and her death report didn't include her
mother's maiden name. My Dad's own immediate FORNARO family had
siblings whose births spanned 18 yrs from oldest to youngest so
despite the 20 year gap from marriage date OF 1849 to the birth of my
grandmother b. abt 1868-1870, here's what I think may be my CANNELLA side:

Rachela CANNELLA b. 1868-1870 d. 1930 d/o Luigi CANNELLA & Maria
Loreta CARDI m. 1849

Luigi CANNELLA b. 17 Mar 1821 s/o Francesco CANNELLA b. abt. 1785 &
Maria Teresa ROSATI b. abt. 1793

Maria Loreta CARDI b. 5 Feb 1822 d/o Giuseppe CARDI b. abt. 1794 &
Benedetta GIARDINO b. abt. 1794

Surnames so far: FORNARO, CANNELLA, DI VONA, DI LUCA, SINAPI, SOSCIA,
SIMONELLI, STRAVATO, ROSATI, CARDI & GIARDINO.

I look forward to connecting and corresponding with others whose
ancestors are related to my families.

Hello everyone,

I remember looking through old baptism records in Itri when I went
there in 2002. Don Mario Mancini allowed me to research them and they
were in a building across from the church of San Michele Arcangelo.
But, I didn't have enough time to copy much down as I had to leave the
next day.

I was thinking that these records would be great to have for our
family research. I tried emailing a couple of people in Itri to
digitally photograph each page of the oldest book, which starts around
1763 and ends around 1790 give or take a few years. However, I never
really got anywhere with it. The book doesn't have many pages in it,
maybe 100 or so.

So, my question to the FraDiavolo group is does anyone know anyone in
Itri that could take digital photos of that book? Because, it would
allow us to go back about 40 years earlier than the LDS records.

Just wanted everyone to know that there is more material out there
regarding old Itri records for our family trees.

Ciao,

Jason

Morning Jason,

Yucky weather, eh?  Yesterday was good though in terms of research and keeping our oil bill down.  The evening volunteer, who's name escapes me at the moment, was in and doing some paid research so anyone who was there and wanted to, got to stay til 5PM!  You undoubtedly know him.  Apparently you two share some non-Itrani ancestors.  I learned from him  that I've been mispronouncing "Civita".  No suprise there since the only Italian I learned were the words that always got me in trouble if a grown-up caught me saying them.  I wonder what other words I've been mangling?

A while back you said you thought that my Francosc'Antonio Fornaro had a brother Cristofero.  You were right.  I was able to confirm it yesterday with the 1820 marriage of Cristofero from the film the finally came in.  The earliest Itrani marriages on it seem to be 1817.  The bulk of the film, items 1-18 are Monticello, Caserta.  Only item 19 at the very end is Itri should you go and use it.  It's an indefinite so you will find it in the drawer with the other films - 1173753.

The earlier non-Nepoleonic marriages also gave the parents' ages.  I didn't know that.  What a pleasent suprise and useful.  I wish they had continued including that info on the later records.

I was able to find a de Vona brother as well as determine the probable birth years for 4 of my 3rd great-grandparents and push back a death year on another from the early marriages.  There are also a ton of death records on this film but I hadn't familiarized myself with them yet, so I'm leaving those for another day.

How have you found the accuracy of ages to be on Italian records?   In having figured some of the 3g grandparents'  ages, there are a couple who should be children in the catasto but I,'m not finding them.  Naturally, I was looking last night after supper when I was tired and I haven't had an opportunity to download the catasto to wordpad and try the trick you passed on, so just maybe my tired, bleary eyes missed them.  From marriages I found, both Crasmantonio di Luca & Magnifica Suprano were born abt. 1749 so should be on the catasto somewhere.  If they were from another comune nearby, well then I guess I'll not know since Itri 1754 is all we have.

Thanks for the answer on the once question.  It appears that there was no minimum tax back then as some people have no once listed.

I think you're right about the veneziano fornaro.  I was skimming just searching for the surnames.  I noticed that some of what appear to be surnames didn't get capatilized so I didn't worry about that initially.  Now on closer inspection, it does appear that there was only one Fornaro family in Itri 1754.

If this post doesn't generate anything, here are some thoughts:
I think I read, either on the menu in the caffe background or on the web site for Caffe Itri, that the owner, Greg Spremulli goes over to Itri periodically.  Anyway,  I wonder if he would have any contacts over there that he might pass on to us who would be willing to do the digital photography.

There's also the St. Mary's Feast Society.  I've been by there a million times but I know very little about it other than the Feast in July which creates quite a traffic snarl.  Perhaps some of their membership have contacts over in Itri.

Well, off for the moment to educate myself about death records so that I can get into those on the film and maybe make a few more connections farther back to folks on the catasto.

Hello,
I wish I could help you--all of us, but my aunt in Itri is 86. She stopped
writing to me two or three years ago and she was never a consistent writer.
I have other relatives there but they never replied to my letters in the

For all,

I am looking into it with some relatives in Itri. Judy I noticed the name Tucci. My mother is a Tucci and I have an extensive list of Tucci's going back to 1333. Can you tell me which Tucci you or your husband is from?

Hi Greg- actually we are Tuccinardi’s, not just Tucci. But my husband has said that he heard a tale from some family members that the Tuccinardi’s are a combination of Tucci’s and Nardi’s..... Haven’t gotten around to checking on that! If you take a look at my site below you can check out the Tuccinardi line. Good luck with your relatives in Itri!! Hope it works out. Judy

Hello,
I would swear that there are errors in the Catasto 1754. A Ruggiero is one
example. His wife's last name I 've never seen in any Itri record, yet some
of the other microfilm data matches his sons and givies his wife as Agresto.
There just no way to prove it. Overall the microfilm data and the Catasto
are in good agreement.

I'm in Florida until March 17. Home I have, in Italian, some notes from the
Interner that explains somewhat the taxes in Italy during the early
centuries; what I am I saying--it's taxes in Itri. I 'll try finding it
again on the Internet.

Take care
Joe

Hi All,

Yes, there probably are errors.  I have a couple of people b. 1749 that should be there but don't appear.  All in all, I'm glad Jason was able to find someone to do the catasto and that I was able to get a copy from him.  I hope he'll have the same sucess with the getting the pre-1800 baptisms.  I'm already putting aside some $$ for that one now.

I just received the LDS film 1173753 on early 1800's BMD for Itri, so hopefully I'll be able to make a few links between the families on the catasto and more "recent" ancestors.

I look forward to learning more about the taxes.

Hello,
I would swear that there are errors in the Catasto 1754.

Take care
Joe

Hi every-one,
I have a great uncle in Itri with whom my family is in infrequent
contact. He has helped me obtain things in the past but is elderly,
forgetful and unreliable - so there are no promises of success.

I will contact him and ask if he can obtain a copy of the records from
Don Mario Mancini. It will take some time as everything will need to
go via mail rather than electronically.

I will keep the list inform of the progress.
