It was part of the original searchlight frame. In fact, most of the searchlight
frame is underslung from the mobile home frame (that's what I am assuming this
is) that carries the searchlight and the generator.
Oddly, the rear crossmember is the ONLY aluminum frame piece. All the remaining
Sperry frame pieces are steel. The only other significant aluminum piece is the
searchlight drum itself, which is cast aluminum.

two separate trailers, and for modern convenience, they mounted both together on
the current frame. last i looked the original trailer frame was mounted directly
to the current frame which may account for the difference in material??

For some unfathomable reason, it was aluminum, with riveted steel gussets. Well,
galvanic corrosion had its way, and the aluminum lost. Fred fabricated and
installed a steel replacement, all welded in nicely, and that worry is done
with!

searchlight. All done! We fired it up today, and lit up the world's brightest
flashlight! This was in the south gun room, with all the doors to the building
open. Worked like a champ! We didn't flush the cooling system, as the old
coolant was very clean. Right now, there's straight water in the thing, awaiting
antifreeze. The water looked quite clean, so, we're good to go! The searchlight
can now be moved out of the gun room! However, it does need Joe K's spray can
expertise to fix up the paint job after such a major operation.
