LWL
Yep, I know what you're thinking Bill.... and you're right.
LWL = 14.375" (365mm)
LOA = 15.25" (387mm)

William,
Chuck Black is currently cutting me two custom suits ('A' & 'B' rigs) from
Tri-Spi material. If the weight of the sails is what I expect, the new 'A'-rig,
with 212 square inches of sail area, should weigh only about 3/4-ounce (~21
grams).
This would put the all-up displacement for Pool Shark (including batteries) at
just under a pound (~450 grams). This would put Pool Shark's Displ./Length ratio
@ 1.25: lower than any Footy except MoonShadow.

Thanks very much for the pictures, boat looks great! Like the wing rig, perhaps it just needs some tweeking. With your current rig, what is the displacement, if I may ask?
-----Original Message----- From: FootyUSA@yahoogroups.com [mailto:FootyUSA@yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of solingpoolshark Sent: Thursday, December 10, 2009 1:56 PM To: FootyUSA@yahoogroups.com Subject: [FootyUSA] Pool Shark 3D Update - New Photos & Details
I have posted new photos of the Prototype in action, as well as the first "production" hull/deck combo:
Note the new "Wing" rig for heavier air. It is fabricated from two sheets of 1mm thick depron foam sandwiched around a 4mm carbon tube. Works very well in heavier air, but is EXTREMELY tricky to sail; kinda requires you to learn sailing all over again. For this reason, I am currently developing a new cat-style rig similar to Graham McAllistor's "Opus" rig for his Dragon design.
Note that the new production deck fits nicely into the hull molding and is glued in place with plain old plastic cement; makes construction very simple.
I have already formed a pretty good pile of hulls and decks (as well as casting custom lead bulbs), and our local club members (BMYC) will be meeting over New Years for a building party to assemble our first fleet of Pool Sharks.
Hopefully, I will have some variations of the new rig tested within the next couple weeks, and will post the results here.
An Odd/Even is very simple to run. Essentially, the boats are assigned to
either the Odd heat or the Even heat for Race #1. Order of assignment does not
matter. The two heats for Race #1 are run and finish places recorded. Then,
the Odd heat of Race #2 is made up of the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th etc.-place
finishers from both heats of Race #1 and the Even heat of Race #2 is made up of
the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, etc. place finishers of Race #1.
Similarly, the odd finishers of Race #2 compete in the Odd heat of Race #3 while
the even finishers of Race #2 are in the Even heat.
With Odd/Even, everyone gets to race against everyone else in the Regatta.
There is no class distinction of Gold/Silver. Yet, the two winners of heats in
one race will face off in the next race.
In TWEAT, there are two conditions which can lead to disruption of the Odd/Even
placement. One occurs whenever the number of boats in each heat is an Odd
number. For example, in a 30 boat race, each heat has 15 boats. That means
there will be 16 odd finishers (the 1,3,5,7,9,11,13 and 15 in each heat) and
only 14 even finishers (2,4,6,8,10,12,14 in each heat). To equalize heat size,
TWEAT moves one of the 15th place finishers to the Even heat of the next race.
Similarly, a Withdrawal can really upset the Odd/Even assignments. If (worst
case) a 1st place finisher withdraws from the next race, TWEAT will fill in the
empty 1st place slot with a 2nd - which is then filled with a 3rd, etc. Since
there is no class (or scoring) distinction between the two heats, there is no
significant advantage gained or lost either way.
Scoring is quite simple since the scores of each race are simply added,
throwouts are applied, tie-breakers are analyzed and the winner is identified.
The fact that there are two winners (1s) and two 2nd place (2s) and two thirds
(3s) in each race (one for each heat) is pretty-much lost once 6 or so races are
run.
I won't address the differences between Odd/Even and P/R. There are people who
like each for different reasons. I think that the cream will always rise to the
top regardless of who the competitors might be and what the scoring format is.
Compared to a RYGged start, Odd-Even is a cakewalk for a good skipper. If fact,
his/her closes competition is in the other heat for 50% of the races!
Enjoy,
Carl

Having seen your van loaded, Jim, I didn't think you'd have any room left over.
It would help if you could take my boat, so I wouldn't have to drag it out west
on my business trip.

Hi Dennis: Exactly how do you run an Odd/Even Regatta? I understand the Promotion/Relegation system...So, if possible, shoot me something about this system. In 14 years sailing model yachts/Racing them, I have never run into the Odd/Even number placement system.
Personally, I love the MATRIX...and the club in Melbourne has a Matrix set that covers 16 to 32 boats or more if necessary. I do, too.

Bill: Sorry, but Herb and I are going South to sail in the US One
Meter Nationals the week before. There's no way we can get all the
boats, sails, tools, transmitters, chargers, batteries, clothing for
two weeks (and all that jazz) in the minivan with a third person. We

I have posted new photos of the Prototype in action, as well as the first
"production" hull/deck combo:

Note the new "Wing" rig for heavier air. It is fabricated from two sheets of 1mm
thick depron foam sandwiched around a 4mm carbon tube. Works very well in
heavier air, but is EXTREMELY tricky to sail; kinda requires you to learn
sailing all over again.
For this reason, I am currently developing a new cat-style rig similar to Graham
McAllistor's "Opus" rig for his Dragon design.
Note that the new production deck fits nicely into the hull molding and is glued
in place with plain old plastic cement; makes construction very simple.
I have already formed a pretty good pile of hulls and decks (as well as casting
custom lead bulbs), and our local club members (BMYC) will be meeting over New
Years for a building party to assemble our first fleet of Pool Sharks.
Hopefully, I will have some variations of the new rig tested within the next
couple weeks, and will post the results here.
Stay tuned.....
I'm going to be working out on the west coast the week before the Nats. I'll fly from there to Orlando on Friday, but I'm wondering if anyone might be driving from New England that would have room to take me home? I'll gladly share expenses, if someone is willing to take on a hitchhicker.

To all who are interested:
TWEAT AVAILABILITY & NEW WEB SITE:
Rather than send out emails in the future to those I know have interest, I have
set up a TWEAT Yahoo Group where the current version of software and
documentation will always be available. The Group Name is (duhh) TWEAT and can
be found at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TWEAT/
Emails containing suggestions or comments can be sent to the group at
TWEAT@...
CURRENT VERSION:
Version 2.2 is on the web and no changes have been made since a bug was
discovered at the R/C Laser NA Championship Regatta. The bug only materialized
when more than 32 boats were in a Regatta. It was not a logic problem, simply
that a formula had not been copied into all of the cells that needed it. The
documentation is still the V2.0 document.
USE TO DATE:
As of today (12/6/09), TWEAT has been used at five Regional & National Regattas
including:
2009 Marco Island MYC (Marco Island, FL) R/C Laser Region 3 Regatta
2009 Housatonic MYC (Middlebury, CT) SeaWind NCR
2009 Sunday Sloopers (Orlando, FL) MicroMagic OMMO NCR
2009 Tred Avon YC (Oxford, MD) R/C Laser NA Championship (Prelim Round)
2009 Les Lacs YC (McKinney, TX) SeaWind Region 5 Regatta
Please keep the TWEAT web site up to date on all future regatta use.
PLANS & DEVELOPMENT:
I am working on a (sort of) new version of TWEAT which I am calling TWEAT GOLD.
It is not a replacement for the ODD/EVEN system, but will allow either a
Two-Heat Promotion/Relegation system, or a Two-Heat Silver/Gold system. It will
look and feel almost identical to the current TWEAT system.
Users will be able to split the fleet, initially, in one of 3 ways. They can
either:
1. Use a special, one-race (two-heat) race to determine placement – this result
will NOT be included in the final scoring (the selection of the lineups for this
race will be using a mathematical algorithm to attempt randomness).
2. Use the results of an ODD/EVEN TWEAT spreadsheet (just by entering a file
name) to determine the split (This would have been useful at the Laser NA
Regatta where Saturday's TWEAT results would automatically populate Sunday's
TWEAT GOLD spreadsheet).
3. Specifically identify boats in each heat by some outside method.
Users will be able to specify the number of boats to be promoted with a
selection of 0 (zero) meaning the race will be a pure Silver/Gold event.
For each race the first heat will be the Silver heat and the second heat will be
the Gold heat to comply with the P/R format. Since the Gold heat's lineup will
depend on the Silver results, printing of the Finish tables at the start of each
race will be a little different (not all Gold participants are known before the
Silver heat is run).
Users will be able to ADD/WITHDRAW boats from a specific heat however there will
be a limit of one add and one withdraw per heat, per race.
The number of boats will still be limited to a max of 20 boats per heat. This
equates to a total of 40 in a pure Silver/Gold, 39 with a 1 boat P/R, 38 with a
2 boat P/R, etc.
Otherwise, everything that TWEAT does will be included, with automatic
throwouts, error checking, tie-breaking, etc. - and it will look the same.
Hope the system makes your Regatta (or even your club's weekly sailing) more
successful. Enjoy.

Two of Scott's boats will be there. I'll be sailing the Micron he gave me. And
Herb Dreher will be sailing his Razor 3.
GO Team Spacie!

You ran a terriffic Regatta last year and I was really looking forward to seeing
my southern friends again this year, but that doesn't look likely.
I will be sending at least one of my boats down to compete and check out the new
crop of Footy ideas.
Best wishes,

Just to be clear, I have no connection whatsoever with the Shark!

Probably the biggest problem in finding pictures of Footy boats being sailed in
Florida, is getting their designers and skippers to stop sailing them long
enough for pictures to be taken! 8^)

Your sense of the Florida contingent not being interested in sharing is
mistaken
They are the most sharing group I've ever encountered, particularly
Butch Bragg
the designer of the Shark. If you want to know more about the Shark,
you can contact
him at bbragg1@.... Butch is a fine Footy builder and skipper and
a super guy.
There is a broadside-on picture I found of the Shark, I will try
to find the link, although the picture is not very instructive. It
would be good to have a more comprehensive set of hull pictures, but I
sense the Florida contingent, for some reason, is not that interested
in sharing...:-}
