Fluoride hardens teeth and reduces decay when applied topically. Ingesting fluoridated water to reduce decay makes as much sense as swallowing sun block to prevent sunburn.

The scientific evidence is now overwhelming that fluoridation of water at current levels is harmful to health. Dr. Hardy Limeback, one of the writers of the 2006 National Science Council study on fluoridation, makes this warning: "In my opinion, the evidence that fluoridation is more harmful than beneficial is now overwhelming and policy makers who avoid thoroughly reviewing recent data before introducing new fluoridation schemes do so at risk of future litigation."
