Hi everyone

OK, I got to the pictures. Lynn, you are right! DDL
does remind me a Seregil. I had a friend who adored
DDL (probably still does)and we would swoon together
when we were at work. We particularly liked him in "A
Room with a View" where he played a character named
Cecil. Our boss's name was Cecil, so when he was
around and we wanted to talk about him when he might
overhear, we called him Daniel........geesh, that was
over 10 years ago.....I do believe I've grown up since
then!! HAHAHAHHAHAHA...

Alas, our boss did not look like DDL.

Lynn, thank you for the prose about your cats and the
whole menagerie. We never had cats because too many
people are allergic to them in my house. But we owned
three dogs (not all at once) who ruled the house with
benevolent kindness. This passed weekend my brother
was up for Thanksgiving and he brought his new dog
(his former dog lost a battle with a car....very sad
day that.) Sadie is simply adorable and we weren't
really kidding when we said she could stay with us,
but no, they took her away. Sniff, sniff.

Now, back to the topic!! OK, Seregil in the snow is
adorable, but who is the llb picture of??? Ahrgggg, I
missed a post somewhere!

ta for now
Andrea C

I got my cat, well now, almost three years ago. And my parents were
strictly against another cat in the household, after our most-beloved
"macho" Rocky was killed by a car. But just seeing her falling over her
tiny paws, they couldn't resist any longer.

She looks like a perfectly ordinary grey-striped cat, but hey, she's got
one kind of a personality. She's lovely, she is a huntress (lifes of
many birds and mice go on her account; and she proudly presents her
trophies to us - with mixed results), she just loves to be caressed (I
suspect it feels to her like a really good massage - and she can't have
enough of it), and she is so patient with us dumb humans, when we do not
understand her wishes (most importantly concerning revolting food). Just
watching a movie or reading a book with her on my stomach (feeling her
warmth) or trying to get some sleep with her lying spreadeagled over my
feet, are experiences I never want to miss.

We still got some years ahead together, and when I have to move out of
my parents house, I wish for an understanding, my dictionary says,
landlord (?).

annika :)

PS: DDL looks (looked) just like I imagined Seregil. I would never have
thought of him, though. Thanks for the picture.

llb is Laurence Llewelyn Bowen who has to be seen in action to really be
appreciated <bg>. I think he'd fit Seregil in some of his disguises in LITS.
LLB is a fine artist and interior designer who is one of the guest designers
on the BBC's program Changing Rooms in the UK, but he can be seen on
BBCAmerica is you have it on cable in the States.

Thanks Helen for the info....he is very nice indeed!

I had never considered what actor looks like Seregil
actually. I have a Tom Canty Picture in mind when I
think of Alec...but even that isn't quite right.
ummm...I'd better read LITS again!! oh darn. But I
believe the illustration of the book of short stories
call "The Bone Forest" has a very nice picture of Alec
on the cover. He even has a bow in hand (not a Black
Radley however,) ummmm. perhaps that is Seregil! I
see Alec as more...oh..ah...umm. manly?? Oh, I know,
more "rough about the edges" Seregil is more worldy,
or sophisicated, in a wild sort of way.

Oh heck...I think they are both very cool guys.

The other day someone mentioned Christian Slater for
Seregil. My first thought was...huh? but as I
remember CS from the movie Heathers (black hair, etc)
  I'm thinking perhaps a tad. Seregil's cousin? He'd
have to have a different voice however!

Well, back to work.

oh -- Luck spoilers below Just in case--

oh and Lynn -- It just about killed me when you burned
the Wheel Inn (Let alone kill everyone in it.) I
really loved that place. I had it all mapped out in
my mind and I could see the symbols the boys used to
get into his room. I know just where everything was
in the room...The couch Alec insisted on sleeping
on...Seregil's bed...the books, everything. I could
really live in that room. You crushed me!! ;-/

I don't know too many writers who wouldn't give valuable body parts for a
Canty cover. He is really wonderful! I especially like the one he did for
Patrick O'Leary's "The Gift". It just glows.

Hiya... joined a couple of days ago. Thrilled to find a list for these
books!

Lets start with a brief nod at how I came to read them... first heard of
them on another list, LitSlash, which is for the discussion of books with
either a) slashy characters or b) *potentially* slashy characters ;) Someone
mentioned the Nightrunner books, and about a dozen others chimed in saying,
more or less, "OMG! you've *got* to read those books!" (which was my first
clue that they might be interesting <g>) So, I shifted them to the top of
the 'must read' list (currently about 8 pages long ;)) and spent some time
searching for them. Eventually concluding that they're darn hard to get hold
of in this country (england) I gave up and ordered from Amazon. I was then
daft enough to go away for a month, to NM, US... and guess what? on the
second day I'm there, I get a letter from home saying, 'Good news! Your
books arrived!' (arrgh) so, the entire time I'm there I grit my teeth and
force myself to avoid the fantasty section in bookshops in case I got
tempted to just buy them there and read them immediately :) (it was a *very*
strong temptation, and *every* single bookshop within a thirty mile radius
seemed to stock them...) Eventually, I return and finally get to read them
(pausing briefly to get over major jetlag beforehand). Did I like them? Put
it this way. I got through all three with nary a pause in between over a
period of less than 24 hours, which is a record, even for me :) (I would
have finished sooner but I got forcably dragged away half-way through
Stalking Darkness to have dinner rammed down my throat ;) )

Ok, not as brief as I'd planned. I have a tendancy to start and forget how
to stop <g>

All in all, I can quite honestly say Seregil, Alec et al are the most
*realistic* characters I've ever found in fantasy. (let me qualify here that
I'm not a *huge* fan of fantasy in general for just that reason, a tendancy
towards unrealistic characters). And realism in a fantasy setting is one
thing that will get me every time.

Excellent work, Mme Flewelling, and thank you :)

Hi, everyone! My name is Jen; I'm new on this list, and I've been
lurking for a week or so, so I thought I'd introduce myself. I jumped
on this list the moment I knew of it's existance!

I'm 22, and I just entered the "real world" about 3 or 4 months ago.
I miss college! Che, never thought I'd say that! I'm an aspiring
writer, isn't everybody? My fiancee and I are working on a project
involving a couple of RP characters of ours who have grown too big
for their britches, but I'll save the details for when we finish writing it.

...Babblebabble... let's see... if anyone's still reading *wavies*

Why did I join this list, you ask? Well, aside from loving these
three book so much I forced my fiancee and my best friend to read
them? :)

I had lost my will to write, I guess you could say. Nothing was
coming out right, none of my characters were cooperating with
me...

Then, I picked up _Luck in the Shadows_ on a whim, and finished
it ten hours later with the feeling that some amazing power had just
touched my life. This was the kind of incredible thing I wanted to
create! This was my purpose, what I wanted to bring to people!

I then sat down and banged out a story that won me second place
in a writing contest last year. It was actually about a vampire, of all
things, but the writing was back. And now, it won't leave me alone.
^_~

I guess I'll shut up now and let someone else have the microphone.

Ja ne, minna-san!

Ano... forgive the occasional lapse into Japanese, I can't help
myself. ^^

Yeah, it's a wonder Seregil didn't get confused, moving back and forth between
Wheel Street and the Cockerel... ^_^

Speaking of the burning of the Cockerel and all that gory detail - Illior's
Hands that was unsettling! *shiver* One of the scariest parts! Another one
was when Seregil was in the ice cavern getting the Crown.

Oh, and I'm very supportive of the Christian Slater-Seregil thing. I swear, if
CS's hair were an inch longer in Robin Hood, they'll be one and the same. Heck,
I'm watching the movie again for good measure!

The lines that stick in your mind, the phrases that make you pause and think...
let's start our collection of our fave Nightrunner quotes!

Here are some of mine, for starters:

"Honour's a damned expensive thing if you're dead when the battle's won!"
~from "The Lay of Araman"
[I love the whole thing, really, it's just that it's kind of inconvenient to
type the whole thing here. Everyone else, feel free to do so.]

"Who you are is nothing. *What* you are is everything."
~the Oracle of Illior

"The time will come when the master must accept his pupil as an equal."
~Nysander í Azusthra Hypirius Meksandor Illiandi

"Luck in the shadows, Alec; you don't question it, you just give thanks and pray
it doesn't run out."
~Seregil í Korit Solun Meringil Bôkthersa

"For with or without my teachings, he will be great."
~Nysander, on Thero

"Necromancy is a subtle art."
~Vargűl Ashnazai

"You were good... but it looks like we all meet our match sooner or later."
~Seregil, thinking about Tym

"An animal will chew off a limb to escape a trap but I think even this clever
young thief cannot chew off his own head."
~Ashnazai, after shackling Alec by the neck

"... I was so infatuated I'd have done anything for him. And in the end, I
did."
~a bitter and wiser Seregil, on Ilar

Okay, now start those quotes coming in! I want to see everyone's faves!

Okay -- The one that jumps to mind is (I paraphrase,
I don't have the books with me.)

Take what god gives you and be grateful...

oh, that's not quite right....geesh, you guys are
going to think I'm a complete idiot!! :-) Well, you
know the quote the Seregil tells Alec and then others
tells each others later too. I thought that was damn
good philosophy -- don't worry about it, just grab
hold, hang on and be happy!!

The longest temptation I had with Lynn's books -- I
did not read Stalking Darkness for a month after it
was out so I could take it on a long plane ride. I
knew I would love it and every moment of the plane
trip would be great.....it just about killed me to see
it in my store every day and NOT READ IT!!
The trip WAS great....I hope I didn't disturb the
other passangers with my giggles at the Street of
Lights scene and my gasps at the fights!!
Lynn, I've got a 16 hour trip to Africa coming
up...could you have the next book out by then?? :-)

Andrea--determined to bring the novels to the computer
so she doesn't look completely stupid on this list!

HAHAHAHA--ah college, I liked it so much, I came back
to work in one!
Aspiring writer? Well, yes, but I'm too umm, lazy?
Scared, unsure?? to actually put my stuff in front of
people, except my friends. I have a series of stories
that I write every Xmas season for some friends. It
is their present. I'm to the last two scenes of this
year's story (just in time, eh?) but they are complex
to me....lots of action in two different places so I
have to switch back and forth. I noticed last night
that I felt I had been on one character for a long
time and needed to get back to the other (who is in
the middle of a fight) but when I looked, it was only
about a half a page! so.....LYNN....how do you deal
with the slowness of the writing process? My mind is
already a chapter ahead! Any words of wisdom for
"enjoying the moment and making it right" rather
than..."I gotta get this story on paper before I
change my mind!"

ANYWAY -- Jenna -- Lynn's books inspired me too to
take a good look at my characters and see if they were
any where near as interesting as Lynn's. The answer
.. no, but a few had potential. Some did not and have
been reconsidered greatly. Great writing is the best
teacher!!

Oh and Lynn -- I adore Tom Canty!!! I have a
autographed print of his "The Nightingale" which is in
pride of place in my apartment. I'd own The Bone
Forest print too, if it hadn't sold out!! grrrrr.
And you are right to wish a cover by him. I always
look twice at a Canty cover. I've read books because
of them.........still...the book had better be good.
I've not finished a few of them because the writing
wasn't great, but the cover was wonderful!!

Andrea -- not a writer yet, so I'd better get to work

For authors, one of the great milestones is to see someone reading your book
in public, especially on a plane. I haven't yet, but am glad to hear my books
are serving their good function. :-)

I've learned that sometime you have to write what's hot in your brain. I call
them "Future Fragments" and I keep them in a file folder on the hard drive,
in the same folder as the chapters. By going with what you are thinking of at
the moment, instead of trying to be linear, step by step, I think the
creative juices flow more freely, enhancing the overall project in your mind.
You may well come up with some new thread or character who has to be
retrofitted into existing chapters, but that's a GOOD thing! I do it all the
time.

*emerges from the shadowy corner of Wheel Street*
There are plenty of those kind of quotes that just stick to my mind and
refuse to be shaken off. You know, in te same way a melody just sticks in
your head until you get yourself busy enough to bother yourself on something
else and when you're all worked out, it's back in your head?

The most basic ones...

"Luck in the shadows."
~A Watcher Saying~

"Smiles conceal knives."
~Lhial of the rhui'auros~

And the longer ones...

"Cursed be the weapon that tastes the blood of a friend."
~Seregil í Korit Solun Meringil Bôkthersa~

"It's better politics to take a punch than to give one."
~Sergeant Rhylin~

"One glance into a person's private rooms will tell you more about him than
an hour's conversation."
~Seregil í Korit Solun Meringil Bôkthersa~

Some of my other favorite quotes has been taken already, so this is my short
collection for now...

Sall Moraco
(Known as Seregil and Mardus to those who know him in real life.)

"Rei phöril tös tökun meh brithir, vrí sh'ruit'ya."
~Though you thrust your dagger at my eyes, I will not flinch.~
-An Aurënfaie pledge of trust.

I have been lurking for a little while and figured it's time to say
hello ! I worked at Waldenbooks when I first saw Luck in the Shadows.
I was checking books in and it just caught my attention. Well, sadly,
we only got one copy. I took it with me to Disneyland, read it right
on Main Steet while waitng for the electric light parade. So, Lynn,
you can honestly say that your book was read in Disneyland of all
places. Well it was so fantastic as soon as I got back to work I had
to be naughty and order more !!! It has been a long time since I have
read any good new fantasy auhors. But Lynn and Terry Goodkind are two
of the best I have seen in a long time.
Well, I'm very happy I found this list, and I look forward to many new
adventures to read !!!

Hi.
I got both LitS and SD at once... Picked them up cause they looked
interesting and took them with me to a medieval reinactment.(Hi! memeber of
the The Society for Creative Anachronism here!) It's always fun to read a
little sword and sorcery when in a medieval backdrop. I tore through them
both, and had them finished by the end of the first week (two week event)..
And was sorely bummed that there weren't more to be read. I grabbed the only
copy of TM at my local mall, and read it in record time.. Waiting on pins and
needles for more.. Aside from Seregil and Alac, I love Thero and the whole
Cavish clan.. My (other) favorite authors are Terry Brooks, David Eddings
and a little Stephen King (check out his Dark Tower epic).. Well, that's

Hi Steve.

Don't you hate that!!?! Picking up a book only to
discover it is new and you have to WAIT for the future
books in the series?!?!??! ARGGGGG. I read LITS the
second week it was released, so I had to wait for SD
and even LONGER for TM.......It was worth the wait!

So you do SCA, eh? I'm rather lurking in our kingdom
at the moment -- got too political around the shire
and wasn't much fun anymore...but I kept all the garb!

What Kingdom are you in?

Thanks Lynn

I'll try that! I have indeed done just that a few
times and had to go back to fit someone in. I always
wondered how writers could be so clever as to know
some twist so far ahead. Well, sometimes they don't
and they have to go back and fit it in! I think it is
a good thing indeed.

Hey Steve! If you get to Penzic (sp?) keep an eye out for a
biker/swordsmith named Adam Williams. Buddy of mine from Bangor, and a heck
of a nice guy. He helped come up with the new sword in TM.

I was given Luck in the Shadows to read about a week after it came out.
I bought Stalking Darkness again within a week of it's release. Both books
were read within 12 hours of being bought. Well in between the time of SD
and when Traitors Moon came out I changed jobs and settled into a happy
career at a bookstore. It was torture. I could track the progress of
Traitor's Moon, but from Oct 97-Jul 99 it wasn't out yet.

However I was not idle. In the meantime I pestered the person who handles
our Fantasy section to read LITS and SD. After I got him to do that ( and
got him hooked on the series) we both agreed that if we could get both books
in, in sufficent quantities, we could hand sell the heck out it. Which, we
proceeded to do. So instead of wallowing by myself in the "waiting" misery I
shared it with customers who blew through both books and were then right
along with me in waiting for Traitors Moon. I am evil.

Meanwhile... I was still duitifully tracking the publishing progress of TM
up until the month of June. Then I settled down to track when it would be
shipped from the warehouse to the store. That's when, according to my long
suffering co-workers, I became impossible. The shipment came in, the stock
manager ducked (read ran in terror) out of the back room and I proceeded to
blow through 120 boxes in about 4 hours till I unpacked it. I then
proceeded to read it in under 12 hours.

You'd think I'd learn to read a little slower. :D

Read in public? Of course! Like i could leave a book as good as these at
home; it would be sheer torture. ;) I take books with me everywhere. One of
my prerequisites for a jacket is to have pockets big enough to put a good
sized paperback in. I get that from my dad, who has lots of worn out pockets
to prove it. Guess the literary addiction runs in the family. :)

>You'd think I'd learn to read a little slower. :D

In that time between reading SD and TM, i haunted every bookstore i could
find, roaming the fantasy section to see if it was a good store (carrying
the nightrunner books), or a bad store (nightrunner-less). I think i bought
TM the day it came out in the Borders near where i live. Then the torture
really started. I discovered, upon rereading the first two books several
dozen times while i waited for the third, that i had flown through them so
quickly that i had missed quite a few important, interesting, or humorous
bits when my eyes wandered onto the next page before i finished reading the
one i was supposed to. Does that make sense? Anyway. So i vowed to myself
that i would read TM slowly. And i mean _slowly_. It would have been so easy
to devour it in one day. Instead, being the slightly insane person that i
am, i limited myself to one (or sometimes two) chapters a day. It was hard.
_Very_ hard. I'm not known for my self control, especially concerning good
books. But i did it. And i think that in the long run, it was a good thing.
Of course i reread it later, and i learned that i hadn't missed anything the
first time; making myself read that slow, i made sure to savor each page,
and read everything thouroughly. So i learned my lesson. From now on i vow
to take books a little more slowly the first time around, but after that all
bets are off. ;)

Ok, i have to say that one of my favorites is definitely:

"Fowl never tastes as savory when you're hungry for venison."
-Seregil in SD

I just thought that was _so_ good. I read it over and over again. Very nice
play on words there, considering the women at the street of lights being
described as "brilliant and lovely as rare birds," and we all remember
Alec's intrinsic nature... :) just can't get over it. *grin*

*sigh* I miss kittens. :( My family pretty much had 3 cats at any given time
as my siblings and I were growing up. Harlequin, Melissa, Mitzy, Harlequin
II, Mineau, Felix, Sam, and finally Honey. The only ones still around today
are Mineau and Honey, all the others either mysteriously disappeared or
passing away. Mitzy, the old lady of the house, was with us for 15 years;
she used to think that the road in front of our house belonged to her, and
would sit right in the middle of it, until one day her tail got run over.
From then on the end of her tail had a little kink in it, she had some
trouble with her hips, and she started looking both ways before quickly
crossing the road. She died a year ago this past August, and we all miss
her. Well, all of us except Honey, who i'm afraid is a bit of a meanie when
it comes to other cats. We brought Honey home with us from an animal shelter
display at a cat show several years ago. She's a large yellow tiger, with
long fur and a long fluffy tail, and beautiful green eyes. Unfortunately, it
seemed that her previous owners must have abused her; once she was home she
promptly hid behind the couch, and was very unfriendly. But we have since
sweetened her up, being a family of cat lovers, and now she is just about
the friendliest thing on 4 legs. And what a character. She's part Maine
Coon; if you ever want a crazy funny cat, try one with some Coon blood,
that's done it for us every time. Honey loves to curl up in places where it
doesn't seem she could fit, but she manages (and she's quite the monster,
weighing in at 13 pounds of pure lean muscle). She's a horrible attention
monger, so don't even think about paying attention to anything other than
her (she lays across newspapers, stands in front of monitors, and will jump
on your lap and obsucre the book you're trying to read with her long fluffy
tail). I miss my cats so much, but i'll be home for a month of vacation in
another week and a half, so they'll soon be basking in my attentions and
pampering. ;)

OOOO, I was going to write that one today! Well, ok,
I'll share. I thought that a great line too.

I brought a little picture of the Bone Forest artwork
today...I just have to get to a scanner and make it a
computer piccie.....Then I'll be happy to share it
with FULL CREDIT to Tom Canty for his remarkable work.
Perhaps you all can help me decide but I think it is
Alec, more or less.

As for "handselling" Lynn's books. Ah yes!! You are
making me long for life in the bookstore again. I
missed the days of ten boxes of new books to sort
out!!! (as long as they weren't all bodice-rippers or
westerns) Claudia(My assistant manager) and I hand
sold "Luck" for MONTHES!!! I think she still moves it
along. It was our #1 bestseller for ages and SD was
as well. And TM as well. 99% of the customers were
completely hooked...the other 1% liked it lots, but
could not handle the bisexuality. When we would
kindly admonish them for this lack of tolerance and
open-mindedness they would laugh and agree that it was
silly of them as they were great books.....people,
geesh. Claudia even pointed out to one guy that
Seregil is not a human!! This is not EARTH!!, etc,
etc, etc. He confessed that it was his own upbringing
that haunted him and made him uncomfortable. We gave
him a friendly pat on the shoulder (Which was OK
because we were female, I guess) and said we knew he
could overcome his childhood with time and effort.
:-) He laughed!! (whew!)

Lynn -- How long did it take to develop the character
of Seregil? Did he come to you full-blown in a
marvelous dream or was it years of thinking and
refining him? He is so multi-dimensional and complex.
I really do hold my own meager little characters to
the "Seregil Standard" Morgan comes the closest, but
he is still to...umm, two-dimensional.

Well, work calls...sigh....At least it is Friday and I
can look forward to a weekend with Morgan and his
story to work on!!

Andrea

I'm a standard setter? Gee! :-) I took a long time writing those first
two books, and it involved a lot of revising, backtracking, and pondering.
I think the core of him came to me in the beginning, the fleshing-out bits--
mannerisms, history, habits and morays, took shape along with the story. As I
set up a scene or piece of action, part of me was/is always asking "What
would Seregil (or any other given character) do here?" Maybe we should steal
an idea from the latest Christian fad and make up "WWSD" bracelets? ;-)

It's so hard to say exactly what the process is; I'm one of those "follow
your gut instinct" writers. The devil really is in the details. You write a
scene, then you or someone you trust reads it over and it strikes a sour
note. Could be you're forcing a character to act in an uncharacteristic
manner to suit the action. Or that you haven't set up the character to have
that reaction in the mind of the reader. Sometimes you have a scene all set
up in your mind and it just won't come-- because even though its neat-o keen,
it just doen't ring true. The bottom line is, get the first draft of a
chapter/scene/book/whatever down, then go over it again and again until it
really sings. Watch your characters for continuity and interest, card out
the overly tangled exposition, balance your tale with lots of variety of
delivery, and see if it's got legs.
