The first US writing workshop cruise was a great success. Met with our travel
agent, George Abali, yesterday to work on ideas for the next cruise. Next year
is the 15th anniversary of the release of LITS. Hope to do something around
that.

Also pondering a European workshop cruise. There are a few that go through the
Greek Islands that I'd love to do. Always wanted to see Delos! I wonder if
anyone would be interested?

Depending on if I can actually afford it, I would be very interested.

I have indeed.  I loved Seregil from the moment I read the blurb on the back

I still hand-sell your books!  Any time I see someone lurking in the
sci-fi/fantasy area, I ask them if they have read your books.  I sell them all
the time that way.  There was much rejoicing when the new book arrived!

I wouldn't say I have /many/ criticisms about the book. I really liked it!
The things I mentioned were, in my view, minor, but nagging. From what I
have read so far from people's comments, they really like the sweeter stuff
that confirms how well our two heroes fit together, the dancing, the family
stuff in Aurenen, etc. Me, I guess I like to read about conflict more. The
whole time they were in Bhoktersa I was waiting for someone to NOT approve
of Alec and NOT make him feel warm and fuzzy and welcome. After all, he is
the half-blood, underage gay lover of one of their own underage, convicted
and exiled clan members who brought shame on the clan and now makes his
living as a thief and spy with the less civilized Tir. Surely /someone/ in
Bhoktersa doesn't approve? Especially with all that worrying Seregil
did about that (apperantely for nothing) while traveling there. Where did
the disapproving sisters go?

Seregil could never be bland, I just thought he was more bland than usual.
That is why I thought the scenes between him and Rieser, Ulan and Ilar were
the best in the book. I would have like a few more of those and a bit less
repetition of the concern. I get it, he loves Alec and I am truly happy he
does, but I guess a prefer a different balance between the snark and the
concern.

You're right, he always was considerate of Alec, and maybe that is the part
that I find unrealistic with the background they have. It's not so much that
Alec doesn't stand up to him, it's more that I find it hard to believe that
a character like Seregil would be /that/ considerate. I am not saying he
can't learn to be considerate, but I would think that for a guy like him,
with the way his life has gone, it would be a constant struggle and there
would be more backsliding into I'll-fix-this-don't
-you-worry-your-pretty-little-head attitude. But maybe that is more of a
reflection on how the relationships in my life have gone than on the ones in
these books ;-)

Have you ever read the 5 Belgariad books and their 5 Malloreon sequels by
David Eddings? The Belgariad is fun, lots of interesting interactions
between our group of heroes. But then in the Malloreon all that has been
reduced to a few running gags and the group of all-powerful heroes now just
blasts their way through the token opposition for 5 books. Yawn. I am not
saying that is what is happening with the nightrunner series now, I am
saying that that is what I am afraid /might/ happen down the road when
everybody starts getting along and working together. See, I have been
scarred by a 25 year old fantasy series.....

Thanks for engaging in the discussion, Michelle!

Marleen

I just want to say that I really loved white road except for two things.
first I really felt like shadows return and white road where meant to be one
book. But that's fine as long as you read them back to back. The only other
thing was the Retha noi battle. I love the Retha noi so it made me very sad they
were the enemy in the end. I know the mother and Illoir can't always be hanging
out and seeing eye to eye, but it would have been nice to have confrontation
with the Retha noi without the slaughter. That just turned my stomach when Lynn
described them dying. But then again, even though I didn't like it, it was still
great writing.

Makes me feel very old too. I was 14 and now I feel quite old. I read Lynn's
books to my daughter. when I read LINS and I remember having to custom order it
because none of the local book stores carried it and now all of them do. Powells
even has a little recommendation card for Lynns books.
I totally face Lynns books out whenever I go to the store so people can see them
better.

I finished the book up yesterday. I have to say that while I like the book and
as usual Lynn's writing was good, I found this book lacking in comparison to the
previous ones. Perhaps because it was more a tying up of loose ends than a
full-on high-stakes tale of it's own.
Compared to the earlier books, Alec, Micum and Seregil seem to skate through
this one, with very little actually hindering them. And because of this I don't
think I was as invested in the book as I have been with previous ones. I don't
think anyone can debate the fact that these characters shine the most when under
extreme stress and I look forward to seeing what new and interesting enemies
Lynn will devise now that Ulan is gone. I sort of hope that Ilar/Khenir will
turn up again, perhaps in Rhiminee to throw another wrench in the gears. ;)

I had also hoped for a bit more about the ongoing war with Plenimar and
Skalan/Aurenfaie politics. And Thero! He's swiftly becoming equally as
fascinating as Alec and Seregil. What about his experience at sarikali? I wonder
when that will come into play?

Anyway - overall an enjoyable though less nail-biting book and I'm quite happy
with it.

Hello everybody,
I'll be gone for the weekend. My little niece is getting married (and
now I'm officially an old spinster...).

Be nice to each other and if there is a problem, please contact Hellen
or one of the other moderators.
I should be back late Sunday evening.

Have a nice weekend too.

Has anyone seen the trailers for this movie? When I first saw the "child" the
scientists created it immediately reminded me of Alec's strange offspring. Cool

I'm getting really annoyed with the anti-scientist memes in a lot of UF/PNR
books and in various films these days.... it's almost as if the USA has
turned into Florence when it booted the di'Medici from power and put in that
complete lunatic Savonarola [spelling]

"Opt-Out Required to Prevent Your Yahoo! Mail Contacts From Being Used for
Social Network
"Commentary by Kurt Opsahl
"Earlier this week, Yahoo! announced a plan to try to leverage its Yahoo!
Mail users' contacts into a social network of friends who will receive your
Yahoo! Updates. Once the most visited website in the world, Yahoo! now ranks
fourth worldwide, reaching about a quarter of all Internet users each day.
Like Google Buzz's ill-fated launch using Gmail contacts, Yahoo! wants to
jump start its social networking plans with the hundreds of millions of
people who already use its email and messenger services...."

"Who Will See Your Yahoo! Updates?

"You can never know the complete list of those who will receive Updates
about your activities on Yahoo!. Previously, your Updates were shared with
your Connections, an earlier Yahoo! effort at opt-in social networking that
was not widely adopted. More recently, Yahoo! started sharing with your
Yahoo! Messenger buddies. Starting next week, your Updates will get posted
automatically to anyone who has you in their Yahoo! Mail address book, as
opposed to, for example, the people in your address book. Thus, if someone
wants to follow your Updates, they can just add you to their address book
and you will not know.

"What that means is that whenever your doctor, your ex, your stalker, or
your plumber include your email address as a Contact in their address book,
they will automatically see Updates about your activities on Yahoo!'s many,
many websites whenever they log into Yahoo! Mail.

"....Yahoo! Updates will not publicize who is in your address book or who
has you in their address book. By publishing Updates only to people who have
you as a Yahoo! Contact, rather than to those people whose addresses are in
your Yahoo! Contact list, Yahoo! will avoid revealing any information about
who is in your address book. This solves one privacy problem but creates
another: you can't make an informed decision about publicizing your
activities because you don't know who will see it...."

We do that too! I work at Barnes and Noble and we get to put up “Staff
Picks” or “Staff Recommends” Tags and build endcaps of our favorite books a
lot of times. And since I build a lot of the non-corporate-dictated endcaps
I get to chose some of the picks pretty often…. Guess what is on there? Hee
hee. I also hand sell them in the section. I put them on auto order, we have
three copies of each… and everytime we sell one the system automatically
orders a replacement for our stock. I have the reading population of
Portland Oregon in my hands *evil grin* Mwahahaha. Ah-hem… I mean teehee

So my friend who is more face book savy showed me that Lynn is looking for fan
art to illustrate the new chapbook. I have a couple of questions about the
scenes, would you have time to answer them, Lynn?

1. By the river: what are they doing by the river? walking? is Seregil still
weary of Micum?
2.Camp fire scene: how is Seregil feeling during this scene? Is he smiling or
still cautious?
3.Queens private garden: What is the situation and where should Seregil be in
relation to the other characters? Is this when he is presented to Nysander? How
old is Klia? a little baby or is she walking?
4. Rainy palace garden: how are Nysander and Seregil feeling in this scene? Are
they working on something or just talking?
5. Nysanders work room and sitting room: Are these just illustrations of the
rooms or is there someone present in them?

also, when it comes to art style is there any certain type or medium you would
prefer?

Sorry for all the questions, but as an artist all the little details are very
important, especially if it needs to match up with a story.
thank you

I'm also curious about type of art, I mostly draw anime, but I noticed you said
"no chibbies". Did you mean no anime? I'm very excited!

Chibbies are the child versions of character. Anime style will be
considered.
