Okay, first all, very nice comment from Lynn in the front of the book and very
dead on, I felt. :) I really enjoyed the book and had a lot of fun reading it.
I'd say that against a lot of the books I've read this fall it comes out on top
without dispute.

That said, of the two books, I still like SwordsPoint the best. Perhaps because
SwordsPoint ended on a relatively upbeat note. The ending for Fall of Kings,
worked for the story but at the same time seemed a little rushed and left me a
bit confused. I'm wondering if there is another book in the works.

Also, there is just something about Alec and Richard. Richard's level headedness
was a perfect match to Alec's high-strung tendancies. Basil and Theron are
explosive but you can see them self-destructing against each other.

There is something about the books and the short stories that I've always
wondered, maybe somebody here knows? Perhaps I just missed it being mentioned
somewhere but are we supposed to assume that Alec got married and went back to
being Duke after Richard had been killed (if Alec outlived Richard, I'm assuming
that at some point Richard met a swordsman better, younger, or luckier then he)
or is that just romantic wishful thinking on my part?

I just did a search on Lynn's name on amazon.co.uk, 'cause I had
preordered the second Tamir book there and I wanted to check if
they'd changed the title yet. Maybe it's just me, but I got a Gordon
Dickson book in the search results, as well as entries
like "Flewelling Untitled". Are they confused? O_o

Very <g>.

It's quite amazing the number of books our Lynn has written she knows nothing
about ;-).

There's a quite a bit piece on Amazon UK in last month's PC Format, they've
been a bad website <g>, nothing wrong with the service which I use a lot,
but they've been censoring the customers reviews and not posting the bad ones
in a lot of cases which I'm sure has nothing to do with their not wanting to
discourage potential buyers <g>.

The Dickson book has been there for ages, despite several communications
from me. Flewelling Untitled no doubt refers to the third book of the Tamir
trilogy. Don't know why they list that.

Talked to a friend of mine last night. I've been trying to get her to
read Lynn's books since I started reading them. She bought the first
three, but never got around to looking at them. Now she's hooked and
is halfway through LITS, after reading all Thursday night.

*rubs hands together in evil glee*

And she's a bookstore manager... so even though she's been
recommending the books based on what I've said about them, now she'll
REALLY push them. ;)

LOL, awesome! I had the great experience just last night of a friend
of mine, who'd I gotten to read them last year (she loved them then)
walks into my room, doesn't say a thing, goes to the bookself, pulls
LITS off the shelf and plops down to start reading. After I start
cracking up, she's like "What, I just decided I HAD to read them
again...right now!" IT was great! (Course, her girlfriend's now
annoyed at her cause she's not getting any of the reading for her
classes done...*shrug* oh well :)

Jeannine (who REALLY is not wanting to go back to working on her ten
page paper for history but really should...*sigh*)

How fabulous to have friend(s) who read what you do. I don't think I have ever
had ANY friends who read - let alone the genre I enjoy. I did, however, once
have a husband who I frequently made sit quietly on the bed while I would read
the latest adventures occuring within the world I had created. When I could see
in his eyes that he actually "got" it, then I knew the story was ok. I would
turn back to the computer, however, for another re-write if (upon looking over
the top of the pages I had clapsed so excitedly in my sweaty little palms) I
could see he had fallen asleep!

How about you? Do any of you have the gift of friendship with others - in
person - who enjoy Lynn's (and other fantasy genre) creations? I envy you.

I am extremely lucky that Andrea C and I read many of the same
books. She's the one who turned me on to LITS in the first place.
We go back and forth suggesting books to one another and have been
known to mail them to each other as well. Mailing is usually
reserved for the books that are good enough to read, but that we
probably won't want to own. Shelf space is at a premium for both of
us! My mother-in-law and I also suggest books to one another, but
she doesn't venture into Fantasy or Sci-Fi.

Now that I think of it, I have a hard time being good friends with
someone who is not literate or does not read for pleasure. We may be
acquaintances, but not close friends. Reading is too much a part of
my life.

Looks good so far, the one I read said Kenneth Branagh is v. good as Gilderoy

it all to Richard Harris. Oh and it's darker than film 1... giant spiders <

If I'm not mistaken (and I could be!), I think I remember reading where Andrea C
suggested LitS to you, or was making happy noises because her friend had started
reading it. Late 1999 - early 2000? I am currently reading all the archives so
I will have a better idea of what has and hasn't been discussed and get up to
speed. I am currently at the end of the month of April 2000 - with another
11,000+ posts to go! I wish someone had turned me on to Lynn back then too. As
it turns out, I never found out about the NR series until after I had read (and
re-read and re-read yet again!) BDT. I had NEVER immediately turned back to
page 1 after reading a book before. BDT was an incredible experience. And THEN
I met Seregil and Alec! Life will never be the same.

Shelf space is at a premium for both of us!

Amen to that sister! When I first moved to Florida a year ago (after divorce),
I had sold ALL my furniture, to include the beds for my kids. First thing I
bought when I had money? You guessed it: book shelves. And now I need more.
Again.

That could have been any number of people, actually.
I've been touting Lynn's books since I first met Alec
being dunked in the water tank! Claudia was my first
success and has become a devotee. Right Claudia?!?
:-)

I'm with Andrea B on this too -- I would have a hard
time finding much in common with people who don't read
for pleasure. I had an email "blind date" (his aunt
asked if I would respond to an email ..umm, ok,
whatever) Well, she must have thought we'd get along
because we both like to write and he has a degree in
creative writing (I get skeptical about degrees in
writing....I find they tend to snuff the creativity
out while putting in the good grammer, etc....a
toss-up.) ANYWAY -- he wrote, I responded like a good
girl. I. naturally asked what he read for fun. He
doesn't really. HUH?!?!? How can you be a writer if
you never read anything??? He reads an occasional
political book (zzzzz) and a little on religion.
Whatever rocks his boat, but it wasn't rocking mine.

So,I decide to just call it like I was seeing it. I
pulled out the big guns and went for the discussion of
religion. Since I'm a Unitarian Universalist with
extremely heavy neo-pagan tendencies....

haven't heard back from him since!!

Maybe he is scared of Witches at Halloween??? Don't
know why....

You must've missed the 'dark' bits. <g> I thought he abusive way
Harry was treated by his 'family' was pretty sinister, especially for
any kids watching; ditto Harry getting addicted to the mirror.

I have to say, though, I've never been able to get into HP, even
though practically everyone I know, including my 80+-year-old in-
laws, just love the books and first film. I seem to have a natural
bias against people who succeed almost effortlessly at everything
they ever do, and usually on their first try. I realized pretty early
on that I didn't have to pull for him -- *of course* he would
prevail, he's <gasp> Harry Potter!

I realize my husband and I seem to be the only people who reacted
this way to HP, so now I'm waiting to be thwapped by most of the list.

HAHAHA -- well, yes, you do have a point-- to a point.
But remember it is a kid's fantasy! Since we don't
get to have our lives succeed in all things, it is fun
to have a hero who manages it! It is a fantasy. It
is not so much a matter of will Harry succeed but how.
HOWEVER, I would point out that Harry doesn't succeed
in everything his first try. On the little things,
like getting his broom to fly, sure, but on the big
picture things -- he messes up completely. He thinks
Snape is responsible for well over 2/3's of the book
and movie. Without Herminone, he would have been dead
on several occassions. Without Ron, he would be too!
Could they have played the chess game alone? Would
they have gotten through Snapes potion challenge (from
the book) if Herminone didn't have a better grasp of
logic than the two boys?

Yeah, Harry lucks out a lot and is courageous enough
to tackle things and not get caught.....but he doesn't
succeed in everything. At least IMHO

Oh and Noerml, Jill, it is perfectly OK, not to love
Harry Potter. Just bear with us while this new movie
is coming out!! The young at heart need their fix!!

I guess I've always been drawn more to underdogs, even in fantasy
books. I think Lynn's spoiled me, too, because of how wonderfully she
tortured Alec and Seregil. I honestly don't think I would've loved
them nearly as much if I hadn't *really* believed they were in
danger, and had to really pull for them in so many ways, on so many
occasions.

I wasn't implying Harry could do everything on his own, but for me,
it was very anvil-on-the-head predictable. I was actually relieved
and happy that Snape wasn't the villain, because at least there was
that one twist in the story. One thing that really bothered me was
the very end, when the points were totalled for the various houses --
and of course, Gryffindor won. I wish they would've at least tied
Slytherin, or something.

It's ok Jill you're allowed to disagree with me ;-).

We got some snippets on book 5... evil author is killing off one of the more
major characters and it's up to chapter 38. And should be finished in a few
weeks... umm sounds familiar... <g>.

Not at all, Jill. ^^

Don't get me wrong, I do like the Harry Potter series. But I do agree with
your bias. I find Harry Potter's charm comes from the stories and other
characters (and twist endings!) more than Harry's valiant and flawless
personality. Granted, it is a series written primarily for a younger
generation, and that's why I let it get away with it as much as I do.

As far as the "dark" scenes in the first movie, the ending and the scene with
the unicorn definitely hit that mark.

I enjoyed the books, but had the same reaction. It seems that Harry has
everything handed to him, despite the lousy homelife. Fortune, fame,
popularity, etc are all his because of his parents. And he's a natural athelete
to boot, so he's got the whole popular jock thing going for him. The author
tries to imply obsticals, but you know that it will all work out for him in the
end. I
much prefer Ron and his family. Hand me down clothes, hand me down
familiars, a rackety old house, and still they are boundlessly kind and
generous to Harry, who shows up for the summer without so much as a loaf of
bread to share! All that money, and he doesn't buy Christmas presents for his
friends who all give him gifts. Tsk tsk.

I got my husband to read a couple of things:) He'd never read the
Lord of th Rings, let alone any other fantasy before he met me, so
seeing him get so excited over it a few years back was really great.

Although, we do have dofferent tastes (he's an incurable teckie and
every novel I see him buying is either something to do with
hacking/the internet or a Dilbert book, lol) But, I guess that's
besides the point. He always remebers different scenes and has a
different impression of things than I do, and discussing it can be
fun. He just took LITS to work with him on the train this morning, I
think he'll like it:)

I have the problem here that most of my friends prefer not to read in
English; although translations are popular from English, fantasy is
not so popular. Sigh, wish I had someone to trade books with-
amazon.co.uk is starting to break me :)

Well, I think the first HP movie kinda sucked (okay it was entertaining,
but not much more) ;-), but I loved the books. The movie is a perfect
example for aspiring film makers how NOT to adapt a book. IMO it is
partly due to the fact that the author had so much to say in the making
of the movie. She might be a good writer of books, but that doesn't make
her an expert on making movies. So we had a meddlesome author, a routine
worker in directing the movie, and a film company who probably had the
first action figures ready even before the casting began. Not a good
thing. I am very glad that LotR had such a thick-headed director, who
managed to make his movies HIS thing. The merchandise is another thing,
okay, but the movie stands as it is. Harry's problem was that nobody
really expected any loss of money. They did not have to prove themselves
as PJ had to.

But all this said, I will of course watch HP2 *g*. Just for the pleasure
of seeing all these great actors in costumes ;-)) And maybe they have
done something better this time.

And of course, Tolkien is dead. ;-) No meddling from beyond the grave, eh?

As adaptatioins go, I thought HP was quite faithful over all. I recently
watched-
-or rather, suffered through--- the movie version of Anne Rice's "Queen of the
Damned". (Actually, I'd had no intention of seeing it, but Doug secumbed to
Aliya's costuming and rented it. . .) "dreadful" is about the kindest thingI
can
say. From a storytelling perspective, they absolutly gutted the plot. I can't
imagine what someone who hadn't read the book would make of it. Too silly
for words. It's the sort of movie that makes me glad, at least artistically,
that my
book have not been movie-ized. You know very well that the Seregil&Alec
aspect would be the first thing to go.

They would probably turn Alec into a girl.

As for Harry Potter, I was disappointed in the movie. It somehow
lacked the humor and fun of the book. With the exception of the girl
who played Hermione, I thought the kid actors weren't particularly
good. And God love Richard Harris, but his Dumbledore was almost
lifeless.

Sorry for the negativity this morning. Post election day blues....

Sorry, sorry, sorry, but everyone's beloved Harry just isn't my spot of tea. I
wanted SOOOOO very badly to like Harry for JP's sake, because I can so easily
identify with her as a writer .... God/dess knows I have all KINDS of scraps of
different papers/napkins/receipts/etc on my desk from when one of the voices in
my head decides s/he will no longer remain silent. I am forced to take a
notebook to church (of all places) because that's the only time my mind is
"still." So.. of COURSE they "attack" me there! Grandmother has learned
looking down her nose while I scribble furiously instead of reciting the
Apostle's Creed does not slow said scribbling.
Anyway ... despite my deep desire to _really_ like Harry, et al, I have to
confess the book left me numb and unfeeling for any of the charactors. Too many
"explanations" for me. And I'm am afraid I found the movie far too slow. Even
my ten-year old found it too boring to watch in one sitting. Perhaps if we'd
seen it on the big screen? My ex took his stepkids to it at the cinema and
found it thrilling.
*shrugs* Go figure.
For good or bad, I'm with Jill and her hubby on this one, although I'm quite
certain HP2 will succeed in a major way without my buying tickets, books or
bobble-heads. Go JP!
