Hi FBC'ers. It was kinda odd to here from Urseth this way. He used to publish a beer tabloid I contributed to some 5 years ago. This (free) PDF newsletter is geared toward brewers, but has at least one interesting article, an alarmist pieces declaring the attack of rabid "Neo-Prohibitionists"
(Had a Guiness Draught last night: 96)

A funny take on the "beer goggles" joke. It seems I have seen the beginning picture before. Like one of those police prostituion arrest sites, or something.
Well, I added it to our links section and the FBC group homepage is also updated with a greatly improved version of the logo, thanx to Tod.
Yesterday I had an organic Hefe-Weizen. Very unfiltered (lotsa sediment). It was Georg Schneider's Wiesen Edel-Weisse (79). Friday four of us went to see Sophie B. Hawkins (42) and Chris Isaak (75) at Meadowbrook. He has some stunning costumes, like a mirror suit. Chris Isaak is the country-blus bastard child of Elvis and Bryan Ferry. At Meadowbrook I had a Bass Ale at Buddy's Pizza before the show (68) and at the show a Mike's Hard Lemonade (47), which gave me heartburn. The Mike's Hard Cranberry (52) was a bit better.
Ladt night I was at a memorial for a deceased friend, Psycho Joe. The memorial started at Duggan's where I had an Oberon on tap (77). I entered the score in the system as a ne "temperature" of "Draught" because it might be interesting to have draught scores segmented out.

(Maybe if Tod is feelign generous, he could correct my sloppy
graphic, but I think it is freakin' hilarious!)
Yesterday I went to a family barbeque and met John Allen, who went
to school with a cousin of mine. I found a common interest in beer
with John, who is a salesman for Powers Distributing. We discussed
the merits of Chimay, Samuel Smiths and more. I turned him on to our
club and invited him to show up at a meeting. Of course, his
professinal beer affiliation is mostly with macrobrews that we want
none of, but he turned us at the BBQ on to Smirnoff's Twister V malt
beverage and I gave the Cranberry flavor (light and not to sweet) a
score of 73.
After the BBQ we went to Concert of Colors and saw Ani DiFranco,
Gore Gore Girls (terrible mix) and Burning Spear. We ran into Kim's
friend Jennifer who is dating Joe Bloom of Bloom
(http://www.bloommusic.com). Joe was our wedding at The Whitney and
played some piano there. Anyway, he also appreciates finer beers and
visited several prestigious breweries in Belgium. We all agreed that
when it was time for a brew, we would bail the Concert for Stoney
Creek Brewery where the choice was better than average draughts. We
accidentitally stumbled into the attached Karras Bros. bar, a
separate business. Not wanting to snub them and seeing they had a
good selection we had drinks there and I had a Duvel (80). Joe had a
McEwan's Scotch Ale and expessed interest in our FBC, but
unfortunately he usually gigs on Fridays. Some of the places he
plays have great beer selections, like Cadieux Cafe or Bell's
Brewery in Kalamazoo. Maybe he can make it sometime and maybe we
could make a field trip some time.
On the way home, Kim and I stopped at Magic Bag for The Cyril Lords,
a good garage rock band that has a great 3-minute song they played
for near an hour. I had two Oberons (77) and even Kim liked it!
I just finished my Internet radio show (www.outsight.mu), during
which I had a new (to me) product from Unibroue, the Quebec source
of Maudite, La Fin Du Monde, etc. It was Ephemere, brewed with apple
juice and coriander (83).
I hope everyone is well!
That is interesting. Where are the scores from? Todd and I actually liked the Cave Creek Chili Beer. What is the range, 0 to a thousand?

I forget, what is "my twisted movie?" So, did you enjoy the dick tricks? Enjoy Lake Hamlin. We will be on vacation in New Orleans for the first bit of August. The following meeting will probably be back at our house, but we will decide for sure at the upcoming meeting at Todd & Bonnie's

I entered your lager votes, Todd.
Red Stripe makes me think of my fave Jamaican beer; Dragon Stout.
Boy, I haven't had that in a while, maybe I can scrounge some up for
the next FBC meeting. Funny, when I was in Jamaica, I couldn't find
Dragon Stout anywhere.... I guess it is export only.
I updated the site for some minor bugs and conveniences. A huge
thing is now there is a print button to print out a Voting Form for
a meeting (official or rogue gathering)
I also burned a killer electro-pop, new wave compilation to bring to
the next meeting.
Thanx to Kim's father-in-law, our back yard is now completely
enclused with 6' privacy fence. During that two-day effort this
holiday weekend I sampled a couple beers Kim got for me deeply
discounted a the Good Food Co. One was a complete letdown as a Hefe-
Weizen, the lackluster and bland Pinkus Organic (score: 42), but one
was a complete and wonderful surprise, the lemon soda and beer mix
Stiegl (Austrian, 72). Very refreshing!
Right now, I am enjoying a Dirty Bastard which is a fine, bitter
Scotch Ale (74)
Looking forward to meeting #4 7PM Friday, July 30 @ Todd & Bonnie's
I am sure Todd will show up here with a group post to remind us of
directions and confirm the meeting.

Thanks to everyone that came out to the last meeting of the Fine
Beer Club at my house! I am already looking forward to next month's
meeting, 7 PM Friday July 30 at Todd and Bonnie's.
This last meeting brought two members out of the woodwork for the
debut. My friend Rick was one and entered one of this votes directly
into the Vote Site (http://www.saveapit.com/beer/Beer.asp) and
pointed out some deficiencies. Based on Rick as a one-man customer
focus group, to following enhancements have been made:
1) Repetitive Add feature for new Beers, new Votes. (Add your
beers before you add your votes!)
2) The number of votes for each "data point" of the Top Ten
lists
Also, I added a new Top Ten: Countries. Guess which is first? Check
your guess at:
http://www.saveapit.com/beer/topten.asp
Surprised from the meeting? Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout fell flat and
is now our second-worst rated beer, while surprise Belgian tripel
Karmelite Tripel surged to the number two spot at its first sampling
with a solid four votes averaging to a healthy 93.0. That even beats
Chaucer's Mead! I got a four-pack yesterday! (Speaking of four-
packs, remember the four-packs of Mackeson Triple Stout? I gotta get
me some more of that.)
Speaking of sampling, Rick made an excellent suggestion that we
share beers more often to get less beer and more sampling with less
volume drinking. I like that, but of course no one should have to
drink anything they don't want, nor feel they need to sample more
varieties than they wish. I propose that proper etiquette at
meetings is now to offer to share any freshly opened beer with
whatever members are at hand, in the room, etc.
I also would like to point out that NO ONE had any of the Dos Equis
and only two of the Fischer La Belle's got drank. Compared that with
the low scores generally given the more hoppy beers, and I suggest
that went in the mode to experiment and sample, all of us want
something more engaging and interesting than an amber or lager. (I
had a Dos Equis the next day with the remains of the taco dip and
voted it a 42, because you can vote any time!)
Thanx to Tod for providing a picture for our home page:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FineBeer/
Look very closely at it!
Gracie and I plan on being there for sho. We have Juhaunas the next
day at the Finn Camp. All will be welcome if they can take 2 days of
drinking and fun.
I know I have had good intentions in the past, but this is on my calendar for Friday & I plan on making it happen. See you then.

Or, so they say!
This Friday is meeting number three at The Schulte's
(5224 Shoreline Blvd., Waterford MI, 48329)
Only there will only be one Schulte! Kim will be out with her mom at
the theatre, but I hope I'll still have company when she gets back!
Don't make me swill alone! Be sure to come to this meeting....
7 PM this Friday!
As usual, bring about 72 oz. and an open mind (mouth).
Bring you swimming drunks if you'd like sample some beers from our
hot tub.
I didn't get around to making our Web site print out the score
sheet, so Todd please bring one! Also, I changed out scoring system
from 0 to 5 to 0 to 100, like they do wines. I converted all our
existing scores.
I updated our Web site with new features, accesseble through:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FineBeer/links
1) You can now vote anytime, even when we're not meeting. Had a good
beer? Add your vote! Drink early and vote often! The system will
even accept new Beer maker and Beer names.
2) Your password to enter a vote is the email address you signed up
to this group. But, you can change your password when you vote!
3) We have four Top Ten Lists!
a) Best Beers
b) Best Beer Makers
c) Best Beer Types
d) Worst Beers
Thanx to Todd and Bonnie for generously hosting Meeting No. 2 on
their deck. Some things that we learned:
1) Chili beer is better than it sounds
2) Mead has a mysterious narcotic effect that should be
explored further
3) Costco's shrimp scampi is great!
Todd brought out a CD compilation he made, this pointing out the
obvious, that music goes together well with enjoying good beers. I
hope to have made a similar CD-R comp to give Todd at the next
meeting, at my house (5224 Shoreline Blvd, Waterford 48329) 7 PM
Friday, June 25.
By that time, I hope to have our most recent votes in the voting
repository (accessible through the links section on the group page)
as well as a facility to print out the Todd-designed voting form but
with a variable list of attending members. (You'll see what I mean
when it is done.)
Todd asked me in the e-mail that prompted me to post these "minutes"
about the site that gives access to my Internet radio show. I am
sure Todd won't mind me answering that question her in this more
public forum where it can reach even more in boxes:
http://detroitmusic.com/outsight/orh.php
Now, something beer-y. After the Detroit Arts Festival, Kim and I
went to Twingo's where the food is always good. I had a Motor City
Nut Brown Ale, which is pretty good. I'd give it a 2.8 on our scale.
That reminds me that friends of mine (Tim and Giles) are running a
first Thursday-of-month film series at Motor City Brewery. Kim and I
plan on going the first Thursday in July. It could be a good time
for anyone else interested and it is across the street from another
place with good beer and food: Traffic Jam & Snug
Here is the Motor City Brewery site:
http://www.motorcitybeer.com/beer/index.html
Dave has chosen to spectact a cryptofascist territorial acquisition
game, Erwin and Monika can't make it and send their regards and Tod
is looking doubtful after I talked to him 2 nights ago.
What about some players off the bench? Rob? Rick? What say you? Note
directions to Todd and Bonnie's are in the messages archive at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FineBeer
I'll try to scrounge up somebody else, but it may only be a founders
meeting and not a plenary session: Todd & Bonnie, Tom & Kim.
Don't make too much food, Bonnie!
On to some beer verbiage:
With Tod at the bar in the Majestic I had a Young's Double
Chocholate Stout, definitely my favorite chocholate beer brew. A few
nights previously I sampled a Ukrainian breaw @ Amadeus in Ann
Arbor. The beer is Obolon and was _very_ good, like a Hacher-Pschorr
Weiss Dunkel with much more mysterious beige sediment.
Note we tried all our beers cold at last meeting but I'll be bring a
beast of an entirely different color today!
I have a chance to go to the Pistons Game on Friday and will need to
miss my second meeting. I am full of shame and dispair, but I am
also missing Eddie Money open the season at the DTE, so you know I
want to go to the game. To miss the next one I would have to be
DEAD... or in JAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The last (first!) meeting was fun and we learned many things, like:
1) "Maudite" is pronounced "MAW-dit"
2) Erwin doesn't like filtered beers
3) We all like bocce ball
4) Remy Martin is not a perfect manufacturer
5) Olives can taste like sausages
I added to the Group's links the application I built for storing
votes:
http://www.saveapit.com/beer/beer.asp
Votes can be added but I will later make it easier to add new types,
etc. If we get hacked and somebody adds bogus votes, I will secure
the application.
Next meeting (May 28) at the two-"d" Todd's at which point he will
be returned his skunky bottle of XO

Bring 72 oz of fine beer to share and an open mind.
If it doesn't snow, maybe we could play bocce ball on the yard,
otherwise, we have the bar to share a yard. Here is a "yarn" about
my recent beer adventures/musing.
A week or so back I was at Union Steet (a sanctioned FBC venue) with
fellow member, The Tod. I enjoyed a Smith's Double Chocholate Stout,
one of my favorite stouts and an excellent match for the fiery
appetizer there known as Dragon's Eggs. This brought to mind another
favored stout, Australia's Sheaf Stout, which you used to be able to
get at Outback, if you asked for it by name. After Union Street, we
went to the Magic Stick where you can get Guiness which thanx to the
miracle of that little gaseous doohickey means even dives like the
Magic Stick can now over a fine stout.
I now return you to your previously scheduled program, in-progress.
Have fun in the Big Easy and I will look forward to having you at the May meeting!

Feel free to add other things to the calendar that could be 'sanctioned' fine beer events. Warm weather is coming and there should be two beer festivals. One @ Stroh's place and another out in the far West 'burbs, as I recall. If you find specifics, post it up. Also, note you can manager your account for special messages only and if we start getting junk mail from non-members, I can throttle things back on the group settings. (I don't suspect either will be a problem, though.)
Oh yeah. I had a Duvel last night and Kim had an apricot-flavored beer she got @ Merchant. Duvel has long been one of my faves, but the apricot thing ("Melbourn Bros." which Kim loved) I didn't like! It wasn't an apricot Lambic, it was just apricot-flavored beer...
