If she were writing general adult SF I wouldn't worry about it (thought the
morals would still apply personally), but man, THIS IS A CHILDREN'S BOOK!

Now, based on the information you gave, I don't think she's out to indoctrinate
kids, but the trouble with moral relativism is that sometimes those who think
that way (knowingly or unknowingly) don't know about their condition, like, "Oh,
sorry, I was so busy defending my rights that I didn't realise I had already
hurt your feelings."

Of course we could go straight to the Bible, but this is for any agnostics or
atheists on the ML.

It's evident that kids have malleable minds; you can bring them up to be decent
and humane, or cold and calculating (for instance, rulers in Indochina hundreds
of years ago trained orphans to become special troops).

Now someone might say that, wait a minute, wasn't Lewis indoctrinating kids into
Christianity? He himself wrote that the Narnia stories came from images
floating in his mind even when he was a teenager, before he had taken
Christianity seriously. And would you rather have a children's story where some
elements crept in, elements of a Creator Who ordained that people live according
to a moral code that agrees with natural law, elements which have kept
civilizations running for thousands of years? Or would you rather have a
children's story with elements which say that anything goes? At first the Roman
Empire was chugging along fine, then pretty soon they thought "anything goes" in
public administration and the army, and later they found themselves unable to
deal with the Huns and Goths and Lombards.

For Western civilization's sake I hope moral relativists see that they need some
real standards. We don't want kids of the next generation living in conditions
like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World--byebye democracy.

And as a person and a Christian, I pray that first, they find the meaning that
they're looking for, and second, that while they're on their personal quest,
they give especial respect and consideration to children, who need love and real
facts and truths to set out on their own quests.

"See to it that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I tell you
their angels always behold the face of My Father in heaven."

Hi guys, I've just finished the above author's book, "Graceling," and I
liked it enough to check out the author and her other books. From her blog:

*Kristin Cashore* is the author of *Graceling*, the winner of the 2009
Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Children's Literature and the SIBA Book Award
for YA Literature, a Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal Best Book
of the Year, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, a finalist for the Andre
Norton Award and the Indies Choice Book Awards, and a *New York
Times*bestseller.
*Fire*, a loosely-related companion to *Graceling*, has just been released
and is also a *New York Times* bestseller.

She describes herself in her bio as "recovering Catholic" and I hope her
future writing reflects better belief/doctrine. She's been asked if she's
anti-marriage since her character in Graceling is firmly against marriage
and children and she wrote:

Some of your online reader reviews say that Graceling has an anti-marriage
message. Do you have a response to that?
Well, normally I would say that I don't want to get into it, because I don't
think my opinion, as the author, really matters. And I respect any reader's
right to his or her own opinion! However, if I were to express a few
thoughts of my own, they might sound a little something like this....

First, some facts: there are some existing, steady marriages quietly
depicted in the book. There is also one, single, solitary character who
feels that marriage is not the right choice personally for her. Remember,
Katsa herself doesn't try to stop other people from marrying; she even hopes
for happy marriages for other people. Them's the facts.

I didn't write Graceling with any particular messages in mind. But if it
does have a message, I hope it's not anti-marriage, but rather, pro- "being
true to yourself." I think that being true to yourself sometimes -- not
always, but sometimes -- means thoughtfully, intelligently choosing to take
a route that differs from the norm.

Here is something that Jon and Rumer Godden (writers for both children and
adults) wrote in their book Two Under the Indian Sun: "We knew that marriage
was not the only kind of love."

If Katsa and Po find a way to relate to each other that works for them and
that involves self-respect, mutual respect, self-examination, mutual
delight, mutual regard, and honest communication, how can their relationship
be a bad thing? (1/15/09)

==
Well, I have to say it bothers me, just as pre-marital sex in books bothers
me but how does one answer questions like that? Especially when stories are
set in fantasy worlds without our God and without His Word? What are your
standards then?

Thanks for this Iona! I got the free overview--a 37:40 lecture. Grabe, the
13-lecture course on the "Literature of C.S. Lewis" is $35. Hirap akong
makinig sa audio books. I'd rather read since I find them much too slow
going. I haven't even watched the video from Luna. which was a huge
download. Hope to do so this long break (along with a lot of work backlog).

I'm glad your urticaria is relieved. I had a bad bout once and I couldn't
walk since apart from the pantal all over, my feet and hands swelled.

* taught by Professor Timothy B. Shutt.

In this lecture professor Timothy Shutt provides an overview of the life and
literature of C.S. Lewis. He mentions various viewpoints that people have
had about Lewis and says why he thinks Lewis is more popular now than he was
in his time. Shutt breaks Lewis' works into three categories: his Christian
apologetic works, his fictional works including The Chronicles of Narnia,
and his scholarly works. He discusses each category of Lewis' works and
examines how Lewis has gained a following particularly in the areas of
apologetics and fiction. Focusing primarily on his popular fictional work
such as the Narnia series, Shutt describes an author that divided many, but
who nonetheless remains highly readable and intellectually compelling. Shutt
also considers Lewis' highly influential Christian apologetic work, his
status as preeminent medievalist of his era, and gives a brief assessment of
Lewis' incalculable legacy on the shape modern Christianity took under his
scholarship. It's a good introduction to this masterful writer and
storyteller.

For centuries, Christians have been tormented by one question above all: If
God is good and all-powerful, why does he allow his creatures to suffer
pain? C.S. Lewis sets out to disentangle this knotty issue but wisely adds
that in the end no intellectual solution can dispense with the necessity for
patience and courage.

Thanks again Mika, and thanks too Aravis for your very detailed info :)

I'm wondering if the storyline for Tales of Manuvu was a case of writers
sneaking in bits of propaganda in their art, just like what Crissy posted; or
the original Manobo tales are really like that, and that we've been looking at
God through another dirty lens.

P.S. I like the description of "Our Waltzes" as the one-ton ballet . . . I
didn't realize it then, but those ballerinas looked like they were on a roller
coaster, getting swung around real fast then slowing down for a graceful
landing.

"Your one-ton ballet in a box" :p

Oh, and Martin and Alts, on the classical ballet portion (which I did enjoy
although I now know I prefer ballet with either story or familiar music :-)
you'll be interested in this:

Back-to-back with Tales of the Manuvu is Our Waltzes with live piano
accompanying the BP dancers on stage as they perform this work infused with
Latin influences, graceful and lilting movements, and the theme of romantic
waltzing of love explored.

Our Waltzes, choreographed by the renowned Venezuelan dancer Vicente
Nebrada, is a neo-classical dance that has been performed by more than 30
companies worldwide. It is also known as the “one-ton ballet” due to the
numerous lifts required from the male dancers by this production, which can
be compared to ballroom dancing with a different twist.

Indeed it was a blast! I regret not having the time to do some research on
the performance (which I normally do) so I could appreciate it better.

For those who're interested, this is what we saw in song and dance:
from http://harlequinhostilery.net/manuvu.html

Tales from the Manuvu Tales from the Manuvu *The Manuvu tribe, who live in
central Mindanao in the Philippines, have a strong storytelling tradition
that has kept alive their legends and tales of the beginnings of all things.
note <http://harlequinhostilery.net/manuvu.html#NOTE>* Gods

Since the beginning of days, there have been two gods.
Manama, omnipotent, confident and self-satisfied - surrounded by his
attendant *diwata*1 <http://harlequinhostilery.net/manuvu.html#1> and *
ainitu*2 <http://harlequinhostilery.net/manuvu.html#2> - administers the
skyrealm. On the other hand, his brother - Oggasi of the earth - finds
pleasure in disrupting Manama's plans with the help of his
*busaw*3<http://harlequinhostilery.net/manuvu.html#3>.

Since the beginning, there has been contention between the gods.
This is how it happened.

In the beginning, Manama's realm was barren, and only one
*katungaw-tungaw*4<http://harlequinhostilery.net/manuvu.html#4>tree
grew in the desolation - but Oggasi"s realm was lush with vegetation.
Envious, Manama disguised some of his fæ attendants as bees and, with their
help, stole topsoil and seedlings from Oggasi's realm.

Oggasi became aware of the theft too late to prevent it. But he knew Manama
was the culprit, and he bode his time to seek revenge for the trespass.

Thus began the enmity between Manama and Oggasi.
Thus began the enmity between order and chaos.
Humans

Manama spends most of his time asleep but, once a year, he wakens for a
brief while to accomplish his divine tasks.

During one of his waking periods, Manama thought of MAN.

Eagerly, Manama mobilised the skyworld to create his grand project but,
predictably, the intense activity soon exhausted him and he dozed off before
his work was finished.
As Manama slept, Oggasi - in vengeance for the first theft - stole the plans
for giving Man eternal life.
Therefore Man is mortal.

When first Man awoke, however, he was too engrossed in exploring the world
to care about the briefness of his existence - and Oggasi's act of revenge
seemed futile. Oggasi continued to study Man in hopes of finding a weakness
that could be exploited, until he found a means to awaken discontent in
Manama's prize creation.
Eventually Man turned to Manama to inquire why he alone of all beings had no
counterpart.

Manama hesitated. He knew that Man's complete dependence on him would cease
once Man had a partner - yet to deny him one would ensure victory for
Oggasi. Manama realised he had no choice but to create Woman.
Thus Man gained a partner.

All went well until the first Woman began to have undefineable longings, and
grew disconsolate from a sense of incompleteness. Manama recognised Oggasi's
influence. Seeking to ingratiate himself, and in hopes of winning back his
creatures' devotion, Manama created the
*kakapo*5<http://harlequinhostilery.net/manuvu.html#5>worm which he
implanted between Man's legs.
From the worm's antics, Man and Woman discovered the pleasures of sex. But
Oggasi fed seeds to the worm, and when these were implanted in Woman, she
became pregnant - and that is why people began to be born.
Fate

In the course of time, the distance between heaven and earth has widened,
Nature has become less benign, and 'goodwill among men' has become
practically non-existent.

But in the beginning of days, the skyrealm was low enough to touch and there
was constant coming and going between the worlds. Whenever Manama was awake,
he held audiences at which his mortal creatures would present their
petitions and, if he thought them deserving, their pleas would be answered.

However, people began to multiply - and since there were more of them to
feed, there was less food. The people became discontented - and Manama grew
so tired of listening to their endless complaints that he discontinued the
audiences altogether.
Even so, Manama had to stay awake longer and longer to cope with his divine
responsibilities. Overworked, he became moody and irritable - and because he
rules the skyrealm, the weather grew unpredictable.

One day, during a particularly bad drought, people decided they'd had enough
of heat, thirst and starvation. They took the large wooden pestles they used
for pounding rice and pounded on the skyrealm itself in an effort to rouse
the sleeping Manama.
They succeeded.
Enraged that his rest had been so disrespectfully interrupted, Manama
ordered his attendants to raise the skyworld beyond the reach of the people
that he might sleep unperturbed by their complaints.

Once the skyrealm disappeared from view, Oggasi seized his chance to cause
trouble among people without interference from his rival.
He created the giant *Makaralig* to drive people from their lands and spread
death and destruction everywhere.

At first , in terror and confusion, the people begged Manama to save them -
but Manama was asleep and too far away to be wakened by their cries.

It was then that people realised they had no one to turn to but themselves.
Working together, they successfully drove Oggasi away - and then they
destroyed his creature.

So it has come to pass, from that time to this, people have determined their
*own* fate.

NOTE This version of Tales from the Manuvu was based on a re-telling of
selected Manuvu origin myths by E. Arsenio Manuel in an article published in
Philippine Heritage (Hamlin Press, Australia, 1974).

Hi everyone, how was your weekend? Ballet Philippines' Tales of Manuvu show was
a blast yesterday. First off, a zillion thanks to Mika for getting those
partnerbox tickets for Aravis, Alts + me (and because of that I developed a
temporary obsession with theatre boxes).

The show started off with a traditional ballet performance, which to me felt
like watching a play in Russian - if each and every gesture and movement had a
meaning it didn't get through to me. I only had the live piano music and the
general sense of the dancers pairing off with each other to make sense out of
it. But what caught my attention was how they could transition from those
high-velocity lifts and throws to slow, graceful landings.

After an intermission they went on to the main program, which was a rock opera
comedy with ballet, loosely based on Manobo creation legends. The costumes were
very imaginative, while the accompanying video background was "interesting" at
times, and since the play was probably the adaptation of an adaptation of Manobo
legends, I ended up asking at the end, "I guess the Manobos weren't secular
humanists, were they?" However, the most Sehnsucht-inducing parts for me were
the scene after the "fall", when the first man and woman were dancing far apart
from each other, but the videocams displayed their moves side by side in
harmony; and the scene of the Creator dancing with the first man right after the
creation, like taking a child into His arms, teaching him how to dance and fly.

Also we'd like to say special thanks to Mika's mom for treating us to Pancake
House, and again to Mika for giving us a tour of the place. (I liked the
"communist-era" elevator with the very analog buttons :)

P.S. Hi Mara, good luck to your Wushu evaluation; and to you Gushi with your
school stuff (we didn't shut the wardrobe door), and also hi to Ate Crissy; DKR,
your despotic commentary would have come in handy :p ; and I hope you'd be able
to come over sooner, High King :)

I'll contact Crissy about that, but the idea is to bring our contributions to
the play on Sat, then perhaps either Crissy or I will deposit them to a Phil.
Nat'l. Red Cross bank account.

Hi again everybody. Just as an aside for a moment, I've managed to contact Kuya
Rem, their house in La Union was partially affected by the typhoon but they're
okay, thank God. And today we'll be finishing Chapter 3, Affection:

-Lewis then digresses on affection for animals and the dysfunctional form it can
take. By the way, this is also an interesting comment as it came about 10 years
after the publication of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: "To learn that
someone is 'fond of animals' tells us very little until we know in what way. . .
. On the one hand the higher and domesticated animal is, so to speak, a 'bridge'
between us and the rest of nature. We all at times feel somehwat painfully our
human isolation from the sub-human world--the atrophy of instinct which our
intelligence entails, our excessive self-consciousness, the innumerable
complexities of our situation, our inability to live in the present. We must
not--and incidentally we can't--become beasts. But we can be _with_ a beast.
It is personal enough to give the word _with_ a real meaning; yet it remains vey
largely an unconscious little bundle of biological impulses. . . . Man with dog
closes a gap in the universe."

-"But of course animals are used in a worse fashion. If you need to be needed
and if your family, very properly, decline to need you, a pet is the obvious
substitute. . . . The unfortunate creature thus becomes very useful to the rest
of the household; it acts as a sump or drain--you are too busy spoiling a dog's
life to spoil theirs. Dogs are better for this purpose than cats; a monkey, I
am told, is best of all. . . . To be sure, it's all very bad luck for the
animal. But probably it cannot fully realise the wrong you have done it. The
most down-trodden human, driven too far, may one day turn and blurt out a
terrible truth. Animals can't speak."

-" 'Selfish or neurotic people can twist anything, even love, into some sort of
misery or exploitation. But why stress these marginal cases? A little common
sense, a little give and take, prevents their occurence among decent people.' .
. . No doubt there are really pathological conditions which make the temptation
to these states abnormally hard or even impossible to resist for particular
people. . . . But I believe that everyone who is honest with himself will admit
that he has felt these temptations. Their occurence is not a disease; or if it
is, the name of that disease is Being a Fallen Man. In ordinary people the
yieldings to them--and who does not sometimes yield?--is not disease, but sin.
Spiritual direction will here help us more than medical treatment. . . . who, in
Heaven's name, would describe as natural or normal the man from whom these
failings were wholly absent? 'Natural', if you like, in a quite different
sense: archnatural, unfallen. We have seen only one such Man. And He was not
at all like the psychologist's picture of the integrated, balanced, adjusted,
happily married, employed, popular citizen."

-"Affection produces happiness if--and ony if--there is common sense and give
and take and 'decency'. . . . The mere feeling is not enough. You need 'common
sense', that is, reason. You need 'give and take'; that is, you need justice,
continually stimulating mere Affection when it fades and restraining it when it
forgets or would defy the _art_ of love. You need 'decency'. There is no
disguising the fact that this means goodness; patience, self-denial, humility,
and the continual intervention of a far higher sort of love than Affection, in
itself, can ever be."

<speedshark_99@...> wrote:
>
> " . . . Affection at its best wishes neither to wound nor to humiliate nor to
domineer. You may address the wife of your bosom as 'Pig!' when she has
inadvertently drunk your cocktail as well as her own. . . . You can do anything
in the right tone and at the right moment--the tone and moment which are not
intended to, and will not, hurt. . . . But the domestic Rudesby means something
quite different when he claims liberty to say 'anything'. Having a very
imperfect sort of Affection himself, or perhaps at that moment none, he
arrogates to himself the beautiful liberties which only the fullest Affection
has a right to, or knows how to manage."
>
> -"A brother and sister, or two brothers . . . grow to a certain age sharing
everything. . . . Then a dreadful thing happens. One of them flashes
ahead--discovers poetry or science or serious music or perhaps undergoes a
religious conversion. His life is flooded with the new interest. The other
cannot share it; he is left behind. . . . The jealousy will probably be
expressed by ridicule. . . . Presently the books will be hidden, the scientific
specimens destroyed, the radio forcibly switched off the classical programmes.
For Affection is the most instictive, in that sense the most animal, of the
loves; its jealousy is proportionately fierce. It snarls and bares its teeth
like a dog whose food has been snatched away."
>
> -" 'Boy, boy, these wild courses of yours will break your mother's heart.'
That eminently Victorian appeal may often have been true. Affection was
bitterly wounded when one member of the family fell from the homely ethos into
something worse--gambling, drink, keeping an opera girl. Unfortunately it is
almost equally possible to break your mother's heart by rising above the homely
ethos. The conservative tenacity of Affection works both ways."
>
> -"Mrs. Fidget very often said that she lived for her family. . . . She always
sat up to 'welcome' you if you were out late at night; two or three in the
morning, it made no odds . . . . Which meant of course that you couldn't with
any decency go out very often. . . . they [her family] did things for her to
help her to do things for them which they didn't want done. . . . This, as we
saw, is a Gift-love, but one that needs to give; therefore needs to be needed.
But the proper aim of giving is to put the recipient in a state where he no
longer needs our gift."

Hey guys!

I'm personally inviting you all to Tales of the Manuvu this October 23-25.
Written by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera with music by Dero
Pedero, Tales of the Manuvu tells the story of Creation in the style of a
comedic rock-opera-musical-ballet. It's been a hit everytime it was released,
and one of the songs from this musical even became a local hit (Noong Unang
Panahon).

Featuring live music from Makiling, and the voices of Robert Sena, Guji
Lorenzana, Al Gatmaitan, Jaime Barcelon, Eladio Pamaran, Banaue Miclat, Jai
Sabas Aracama and soloists from the UP Concert Chorus - of course, Ballet
Philippines with choreography by our brand spanking new Artistic Director, Paul
Morales (who also directed the Cinemalaya film, Concerto).

For more information, please call Ballet Philippines at 551-1003 and look for
Mavic. However, I can get tickets at a 50% discount, just tell the time and date
of the show you'd like to watch and how many tickets. :P

Show dates:
Oct 23 3pm & 8pm
Oct 24 3pm & 8pm
Oct 25 10am & 3pm

Ticket prices w/o the discount (Matinee/Evening):
Orchestra Center P550/P1100
Orchestra Side P450/ P900
Lower Box P350/P800
Upper Box P300/P600
Balcony 1 Center P300/P600
Balcony 1 Side P300/P500

You can PM me at this email address or, if you have my number, text me. :)

Btw, all shows will have live music and will feature the singers. :D

I hope this isn't perceived as inappropriate btw, with a lot of people still
reeling from Ondoy. :( Our director, Sir Paul, was actually one of those who
suffered massive property damage in Cainta. He made the finale of Manuvu with
Ondoy in mind, and his own personal experience during the flood.

Anyway, hope you can help support this fusion of Filipino music, voices, songs,
writing, dance!

Hope to see you there! :)

- Mika Fabs
