Wednesday- have a relaxing after work paddle on Wildwood Lake at the Holly Recreation Area located on Grange Hall Rd east of Dixie Hwy. Meet at 6:00.

Sunday- 2:00 meet in the parking lot behind Down the Hatch Pub in Linden. The paddle to McCaslin Lk Rd. is about 3 hours. We will need to spot vehicles so add another half-hour to the trip. For those who want- we can picnic at my house on Byram Lake after the paddle. Bring a dish and drinks or we can hit the deli at Alpine on the way home.

Please RSVP if you will be attending the paddles and picnic. If you or a friend needs to borrow a kayak, let me know ASAP.

Wednesday, July 16 is a free concert in the park across from my home on the lake. It's from 7 - 8:30, meet at my house to paddle across or to just listen on the water. The website for the group is http://tumbaobravo.com. Sounds like a lively evening. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

Hey there area paddlers!
Linda and Susan are going up the the U.P. to paddle in the Seney Wildlife Refuge Wednesday July 23 - Saturday July 26.  We are staying at the Northland Outfitters Cabins and Campground in Germfask.  Northoutfitters.com has some great info about this campground on the Manistique River.  The website will tell you about their launch and their kayak rentals and routes they transport to.  The Refuge is a beautiful place to explore on bikes, foot or in a kayak.  Anyone interested please contact Susan at strfrdblnd@... or call 810-210-9368 or Linda at 810-210-7676.  Contact the above website for availability and/or reservations in the campground.  We would love to share this adventure with others interested.  It's a chance to get OUT OF TOWN and explore some new and different water.  Caravanning up would be fun and cost effective too.
So think about it...could be just the summer paddle you were looking for...

Dear Fellow Paddler:

I trust you are fully enjoying your paddling season. I hope that you have had as many chances to get out to relax and enjoy the great outdoors as we have since Dad retired from the UM Hospital earlier this year.

This summer, we began a new outreach to the paddling community called "Paddle With Us." Each Tuesday evening and Thursday morning we have been kayaking at some of the area's greatest paddling spots. So far, we've taken several trips along the Huron River, investigated the beauty of Allen Lake, kayaked in the Maumee Bay, and explored a couple of new spots on the River Raisin.

There is still a lot of water to be covered, and we would love to have your help. If you would like to be kept informed about our upcoming paddling trips and join us sometime, please e-mail us back with your interest. We'd love to have you!

- Josiah Cornett & the Kayak Corral Family

P.S. Check out maps and pictures of the places the Paddle With Us group has been already at http://kayakcorral.com/paddlewithus.htm !

Yes.  This is the web page for the group that's been leading the river inventory.  We had a wonderful meeting (yea i know that's an oxymoron) this morning.  Joining the communities together using the river to get common planning through common goals is a big chunk of their work.  A large percentage of the stake holders along the river have been attending the meetings and have bought into creating the river trail and have committed resources to promoting a healthy paddleable river.

Hi All. I just got a report that there are several trees down between
Holly and Fenton. Pete and I are going to try to clear them Thursday
Morning 9:00 AM. Please join us at Waterworks Park in Holly.

Time providing we may check out the Fenton stretch to see what's left to
do there.

Hi All;

When Pete told me the river had a few trees down the other day, he
wasn't kidding. This morning Handsaw Pete, Lopper Jim and Chainsaw Doug
set off from Waterworks park. It was just another perfect day for a
paddle. just after the first mile we ran into the first blockage. I
had envisioned a 6 to 12 inch single trunk tree across the river.
Noooo! It was a pair of silver maple with intertwined trunks and a pile
of brush that had built up in the mess. The three of us sprung into
overly enthusiastic cutting, dragging, and throwing, until an hour later
the obstruction was no more. About 100 yards later we had to do it
again. This blockage was a bit smaller but the tree was bigger. Once
again we succeeded. We even moved a poison ivy covered log further up
on the bank that I had cut a month or so ago. It was much easier to
move with most of the poison ivy gone and 2 manly men to help me. The
next tree was a willow covered in grape vines. After we got it
untangled it was also moved to a space more in line with pleasure
paddling. The rest of the trip was spent enjoying the sunshine and
swapping stories with a few branch lopping episodes tossed in to keep us
wet and cool.

Many thanks to Jim and Pete for their efforts. We did give ourselves a
pat on the back and a beer in the belly by finishing up at the French
Laundry.

Happy paddling

Doug.

Hi all;

I just tried a scouting expedition through Fenton. It turned out to be
a little more adventurous than I had time for. For a put in I used the
parking lot near the tennis courts in downtown Fenton. The water was up
and pleasantly fast. There were a few rocks to watch out for, but
plenty of room to go around them. Just after I passed Silver Lake Rd
there was a fun little rapid maybe 10 or 15 ft long with over1 ft of
drop. That's as far as I got. There are multiple trees down with the
garbage starting to pile up on the logjams. Being short on time I just
packed up and walked the quarter mile back to my truck.

I'm thinking that we need to coordinate with the City of Fenton to get
another saw and garbage picking party started. Any volunteers?

Depending on when you go, I would help. I'll see if I can get other paddlers out  there. It sure would be nice to be able to paddle from downtown Fenton to the public launch on Ponemah.

I haven't paddled the Bald Mountain area, but in the Milford area from Wixom Rd. up to Proud Lake and back to Milford Mill Pond is very much like McCaslin Lk Rd. up toward the gun club.  Clear water, narrow stream, light current, scenic.
Stony Creek Park is similar to Mott Lake, wide open flat water.
I will go to Sleepy Hollow SP next, then try south branch of Flint River above Columbiaville.

A big thank you goes out to all the volunteers who helped cleaning out
the river in Fenton. Debbie (our organizer), Tom, Dave, Willi, Sharon,
Pete, Jimmy, Sara, Andy, Maggie (our car spotter) and I got wet and had
fun. At 6:00 we started in Bush park in Fenton and went up stream to
Silver Lake Road. There were 3 major log jams and several smaller
blockages to remove as well as a couple of bags of garbage, plus a
chair, a bike, a municipal garbage can... Working near the park had
it's advantages. We just had to bag the garbage and put it up on the
bank in the park. The city of Fenton will pick the garbage up. By 8:30
we had made it back to our starting point. Several people had to head
home at this point. 5 of us continued on down stream to our trucks
about half way to us 23. This portion had a cleanup a month ago. We
still found a bag of garbage and a few trees to trim back. The river is
surprisingly scenic for being in the city. There are only a few lawns
in view considering we are in the heart of the city. Aside from the
seasonably low water this will be a fun segment. There is a fairly
brisk current moving you along. It was 9:30 by then and time to call it
a day. Now the bad news. There is more work to be done. As near as I
can figure we have 8 more blockages to clear on the way to Lake
Ponemah. One of which is fairly substantial. The date picked to finish
this off is Sunday August 3rd. More details to follow. Once again
thanks for your support. We are within striking distance of having a 20
mile stretch of scenic river in paddling shape.

Doug.

Sunday 31st Holly Waterworks Park to Fenton Strom Park 1:00 Maggie 810-735-9570.

Additional kayaking trips will be scheduled on a per-interest basis. I would like to kayak from Fenton Bush Park to Lake Ponemah when I know the trees have been cleared. Look for email notices. I would also like to explore different sections of the Flint and Huron Rivers. If you are interested or want to plan your own outing, send an email message to fenton-area-paddlers@yahoogroups.com or send to Bill Cardew mrbillc@..., or yerantmag@... or call Maggie 810-735-9570
