Hi to all our wonderful customers,

Dana & I hope this email finds you and yours doing well this Autumn 2010.

We thought we'd let you know about our fairly new online shopping cart (http://store.kayakcorral.com) and all the the new upcoming products in our store.
We have added Sunday Afternoon Hats to our line. Also a new company called Level Six. We are just getting our feet wet with them
and will be adding them to our cart in the next couple of weeks.

With the upcoming holidays we thought we'd send along a coupon for 25% off any one item in the our store ( see attachment)
Or 15% off all items on our online cart ( use coupon: Autumn2010sale).

We are thankful for each one of you and without you there would be no Kayak Corral store. :)

If we can ever be of service in any way just let us know.

Also we have had a lot of feed back on the photo gallery of places to go to paddle. If you haven't checked it out yet it is http://www.paddlewithus.org

Thank you for another great year.

Sincerely,
Dana & Jane Cornett
Kayak Corral

P.S If you get this email more than once please excuse us. Also you are welcome to pass this on to your friends.

12th Annual Hugh Heward Challenge

April 30th 2011

The Story

The Hugh Heward Challenge is an annual paddling event that retraces a part of the historical route of English explorer and fur trader Hugh Heward and his party of 7 Frenchman. On April 24th of 1790 Hugh and his team paddled down a 50 mile section of the Grand River in central lower Michigan while being hurried by a small group of feisty natives. This story was brought to the attention of Verlen by his good friend and river neighbor Jim Woodruff who is a Michigan Historian and Topologist. Jim has dug up a multitude of information on the old canoe routes that criss cross the state of Michigan and also the people that traveled them. This particular 50 mile run is but a small section of Hugh's original trip which took him from the village at Detroit, through Michigan's lower peninsula and over to the village of Chicago and beyond. Jim found it interesting that while traveling past his and Verlen's own backyards Hugh and his party supposedly paddled 50 miles in a single day. After studying the charts and extensively discussing Hugh's accomplishments with Verlen, Jim proposed that Verlen go out and prove it could be done. Verlen gathered his own group and set out the very next spring to show it could be done and since then hundreds and hundreds of modern day voyageurs have retraced the route.

The full 50 mile Challenge is a big day for even those that have expert water traveling skills. A few shorter routes have been set up for those wishing to have an easier day. The Half Hugh is about 25 miles and starts in the town of Grand Ledge, MI and the Quarter Hugh is about 13 miles and starts at Charlotte Hwy near the town of Portland, MI.

The Routes

The Full Hugh Heward Challenge will start at 6am, April 30th at Lions Park, 300 W. Jefferson St. Diamondale MI. The Grand River is wide and gently flowing, current is suitable for beginner paddlers. There are three easy portages, 2 going through the city of Lansing, MI and 1 at Grand Ledge, MI. Portage help is available at each spot to help keep you moving. Just outside of the city of Lansing, Challengers will pass by Verlen's final resting spot just upriver of his old home and canoe workshop. Jim Woodruff's home is just upriver of Verlen's on the opposite bank, stop in if you have time and enjoy a Silver Bullet with the old historian that made this adventure possible!

The Half Hugh will start at 10am, April 30th at Fitzgerald Park, Grand Ledge, MI.

The Quarter Hugh will start at Noon, April 30th at Charlotte Hwy Bridge just outside the town of Portland, MI.

All Routes finish at the site of the Verlen Kruger Memorial at Thomson Field in Portland, MI.

The Details

A donation of $10 can be made to the Verlen Kruger Memorial for participation in this event. All proceeds will go directly to fund projects and paddle events put on by the Verlen Kruger Memorial.

Certificates of completion will be awarded to all finishers who make it to Thompson Field, along with a delicious chili dinner.

The City of Diamondale, MI is again offering primitive camping at the starting line for Friday night. The Lions Park is located at 300 W. Jefferson St. Diamondale MI.. The park offers a sheltered picnic area and running water bathrooms. Downtown Diamondale is only a few blocks away.

Please direct questions and comments to the discussion forum so everyone can take part, chances are that others will have the same questions as you do.

Unfortunately the three mile walk from Highland Oaks to Rose Center would be miserable given the weather prediction of rain the day before and possibly the day of the hike.  We want the walkers to enjoy the hike and support trail development, so we'll postpone it until spring. It's hard to plan for outdoor activities in Michigan!
Enjoy the New Year!  We'll be meeting at the usual location on Wednesday the 5th at 7pm.  See you there for some better planning.

The plan for New Year’s Day is to meet at 9:00 am at Kruger Landing on the Red Cedar River off Aurelius Road to go upstream and back for about 2 hours total paddling, or meet in Eaton Rapids at noon behind the Quality Dairy on the Grand River and paddle from there down to Charles Nicholson’s home below Pietrieville. In my case I'm going to do both!!!

Be sure and bring spare clothes in a dry bag just in case and this a 100% PFD usage activity.  If it rains wear a rain jacket.

30th Annual Au Sable River Overnight (ASRO)

The 30th Annual ASRO will be taking place as scheduled on February 19 – 20, 2011 on the Au Sable River.  The rendezvous Saturday morning the 19th is at the Big Boy Restaurant in Grayling at 8:30 a.m.  From there we will unload at Old Au Sable Fly Shop (formerly Ray’s canoe livery) on the river and run shuttle down to Parmalee and check for ice at the landing.  We should be launching on the river by 11:30 a.m.

We will be camping overnight so everyone going needs to be an experienced winter camper as well as an experienced paddler.  We have had night time lows down to -20 degrees but the average is typically around +10 degrees but that is still cold without the proper equipment.

All paddlers are responsible for their own actions, equipment, emergency gear, and clothing as this is a self-guided and self-equipped trip.

Also, the following information was sent to me by George Stockman:

Hi Jay,

I plan to join you again this year on the AuSable, providing is isn’t raining.  I might have a couple friends coming with me.

We just bought a chalet 4 miles south of Grayling and I plan to be there Friday night. You’re welcome to join me; same for our other regulars.  The place can be heated and is pretty nice, but has little furniture, so sleeping mats will be needed. I may stay there another day after. I might not turn the water on, but we can use the stove to heat water and can have a bucket in the bathroom!

Paddlers should email me at G_Stockman@... if they want to stay over with me on Friday night and should send a phone number as well. If there is a lot of snow, I may have some other logistics to worry about — we should easily be able to park six 4WD vehicles, but may have trouble with 2WDs if the snow is deep.

The chalet is at 3149 5 Mile Road and is about 1.5 miles due east of the junction of HWYs 75 and 127.  Take the 4 Mile Rd Exit, 30 yards east, then south on Old 27 to the 2 big billboards, turn east on 5 Mile to the Chalet on the right, about 50 yards south in the woods. If you see Merro Rd going off to the right, you have gone 100 yards too far.

I have a 5 canoe trailer stashed at the chalet that we can use for the shuttle if you like.  2″ ball I think.

George

You and your friends may know the locations - but many others do not.

Only when people are comfortable knowing where they are going,
where they can put-in, take-out, park , etc. will they attempt

Audiences can expect to see these great films: Awakening the Skeena, wherein Ali Howard swims the 610-kilometer Skeena taking a stand for her river and its future; In Halo Effect Steve Fisher seeks new whitewater runs in Iceland and Norway when in a blink of an eye something goes horribly wrong; Islands of Fire is a celebration of good food and good humor as Justine Curgenven’s sea kayaking film showcases the warm turquoise waters of Sicily’s volcanic Aeolian Islands; In Mammalian, Frank Wolf is back, this time on a 2,000-kilometer Arctic canoe journey from Yellowknife to Rankin Inlet; Solo is the heartbreaking true story of Andrew McAuley who

set out to be first person to kayak from Australia to New Zealand. His kayak was found 30 days later—one day away from completing his journey.

The Reel Paddling Film Festival World Tour is produced by Rapid Media and presented in the historic Michigan Theatre by Quiet World Sports LLC to benefit GREAT on Sunday March 20 at 12 noon.

This is really something worthwhile to see.  I've traveled over to Windsor, Ontario to catch this in the past as it came near Detroit.

You're simply not going to catch these films on everyday cable channels.  Similar to the Banf Film festival, full of adventure and emotion.

I'm looking for some enthusiastic people to be paddling trip planners for this summer. Come to the Fenton Community Center @ 7:00. We'll stay for an hour and plan where to kayak. If you have an idea and want to be the contact person, be there!
We can include camping and/or day trips, rivers and/or lakes. Paddling the River Raisin, Looking Glass, Cass, Flint and other less traveled rivers will be one of our goals.

If our meeting lasts longer than an hour we can continue at the French Laundry or other local spot.

Anyone looking for a gently used canoe? I have a 17' Grumman with 2 plastic and three wooden paddles plus the foam block for cartop carrying. All this can be yours for $600. Call 810-922-8627. Wanted to ask our paddling group before I put it on Craigslist next week.

The Shiawassee is clear from Waterworks Park in Holly to Fish Lk. Rd.
Steve and I went on a short scouting expedition yesterday. I brought a
chainsaw because I hate portaging. We took out 12 trees blocking the
river to clear our path. Since the river is just at flood stage the
culverts are a bit on the short side and when the water goes down there
will be a few more smaller trees to clear. By next week I'm expecting
the Fenton Mill Pond to break up so we can get out and clear the rest of
the way to Fenton. If anyone is interested in helping give me a shout.

Thank you Doug and Steve! I hear the water is COLD! I also heard that tall people in canoes can have a bit of a problem going through the "tubes" and that head banging is possible.
