I just finished "Fledgling" (2009), the latest Liaden Universe novel by
Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. I posted some comments on my blog:

http://garthright.blogspot.com/2010/03/fledgling-by-sharon-lee-steve-miller.html

Is anyone here a fan of the Liaden Universe books? For the most part,
they're sort of romantic space opera. I enjoy them (some are better than
others, of course).

In this case, "Fledgling" is great fun, but I think it would be VERY
confusing to people who weren't already familiar with the series. Even
if you were, it might be confusing (since the name, "Daav yos'Phelium,"
is never mentioned in this book, but only his alias, Jen Sar Kiladi).
This is a "side book" to the mainline plot, too, set on a completely
different planet. Well, it was written for fans (I've got the whole
story on my blog).

If you're not familiar with the Liaden books, you pretty well need to
start at the beginning, with either "Agent of Change" or "Conflict of
Honors," both published in 1988, since it's more or less all one
extended story. However, there IS a standalone book that's my personal
favorite. It's called "Balance of Trade" (2004). It's in the same
universe, but at a different time and with completely different
characters. If you want to sample Lee and Miller's writing, that would
be a good pick.

"Pilot's Choice" (2001) might be a good start, too. It's an omnibus of
"Local Custom" and "Scout's Progress," two novels which star the
previous generation from the mainline story.

In general, I really like the cultural details in these books. And the
characters. There's nothing much about technology (and quite a bit about
psi powers, including a psychic tree), but the Liaden culture is quite
interesting. And apparently that's not a fluke, because Lee and Miller
show us other interesting cultures in "Fledgling."

I just finished "Bound in Blood" (2010) by P.C. Hodgell, the fifth in
her Kencyrath fantasy series. If you're curious, I've got more details
here...

http://garthright.blogspot.com/2010/03/bound-in-blood-by-pc-hodgell.html

or

... but basically, I was disappointed because nothing much new happens.
It seems like just a continuation of the previous book, "To Ride a
Rathorn." True, that book is my favorite in the series, but I still
expect a new book to have something new to offer - new insights, new
characters, new situations, whatever.

Furthermore, it's been 28 years since the first book, "God Stalk," was
published. This is only the fifth book in the series, and we don't seem
to be getting anywhere. I'm wondering if we're ever going to see the
conclusion of this. (As it turns out, I'm almost exactly the same age as
the author, and I'm not sure I've got another 28 years in me.)

But I really have enjoyed this series. I loved the first book, and
although the second dragged a little, the third and fourth were also
great. Is anyone else here a fan?

Not a fan Bill and unlikely to be. It sounds like another Wheel of Time and
Game of Thrones saga. I am terrified that GRRMartin is not going to be able
to see his story out. I dread going to his website as he looks older every
new picture (of course he is).

I am also waiting for the next instalment of the Clan of the Cave Bear
series. I read the first book when I was still at high school. 30 years on
and I'm not sure if Jean M Auel is still alive!!

Hang in there Bill !!

Cheers

Well, it's not THAT bad, Peta. :-)

The big problem is just that she apparently writes very slowly - 9 years
between the second and third book, and 12 years between the third and
fourth? Between their publication dates, anyway. And "Bound in Blood" is
the only one which hasn't moved the story forward.

That was my big problem with the Wheel of Time series. I really enjoyed
the early books (though I had some problems with them even then), but
eventually, the series just stopped going anywhere, it seemed. I stuck
with them far too long, but eventually, I gave up. (And since Jordan
died before he ever finished, I guess that was the right decision, huh?)

I read the first book, "A Game of Thrones," but it didn't appeal to me
enough to continue the series. However, I made a note of your highly
favorable opinion of it, posted earlier here, so I've been wondering if
I needed to give it another try. I guess now I won't, at least until I
know if the series will ever be finished.

> I am also waiting for the next instalment of the Clan of the Cave Bear series.

Wow, is that series still going on? My parents just raved about it, so I
read the first two or three books. I enjoyed the first (again, I had
some problems with it, but I really liked the idea), but it quickly
changed into something too ridiculous for me. Well, I might have been
better off thinking of it as pure fantasy, I don't know.

I think I prefer Jack London's "Before Adam" (1907), although I must
admit that it's been decades since I read it, so I really don't remember
that much about it.

I absolutely loved the first book in the series, Mystic and Rider, so I was
excited to find the sequel, Thirteenth House. But I have to say, I was
disappointed. Maybe I was expecting a little more romance, like her other books
and especially like the previous book, but it was pretty depressing and the
ending left me wondering if it was really going to turn out or not. The heroine
ultimately did the right thing, and it seemed as if all was not lost, but it
wasn't really a true happy ending, just sort of a hope that it might be, but
only temporarily.
Anyone read it? Thoughts?

I just finished "Oath of Fealty" by Elizabeth Moon, her new sequel to
"The Deed of Paksenarrion" trilogy first published more than two decades
ago (not to be confused with the 1981 SF novel by Larry Niven and Jerry
Pournelle, which has the same title).

In general, I loved the book, but it's just the first part of a longer
story (multiple stories, rather). The book just... ends, without any
attempt to come to any temporary conclusion. Although the book starts
where "Oath of Gold" left off, Paksenarrion is just a minor character in
"Oath of Fealty." There are a number of characters in different story
threads, instead. (I like that, myself.)

If you want more details, here's my blog post:

http://garthright.blogspot.com/2010/06/oath-of-fealty-by-elizabeth-moon.html

FYI, last week I also posted comments about "Saltation" by Sharon Lee
and Steve Miller, part of their Liaden Universe series and sequel to
"Fledgling":

http://garthright.blogspot.com/2010/06/saltation-by-sharon-lee-steve-miller.html

It's science fiction (space opera), rather than fantasy, but I suspect
that this series is popular with fantasy fans. And since the Liaden
Universe is full of psi powers, it's arguably fantasy, anyway, I guess.

There's been very little posting here in recent months. Is no one
reading anything? I must admit that I haven't been reading much myself
lately, but I thought I'd mention these two.

I didn't read the whole review, Amy, because it warned about spoilers,
and I thought I might want to start with the first in the series. So I
checked out the reviews (for the first book) at Amazon.com, instead.

Most of the reviews were very positive, but they praised the fact that
it had an African hero and setting, instead of commenting much about the
fantasy itself. I'm always glad to see more diversity in fantasy, but
that's not why I'd read the book.

The hero seemed to be compared to Tarzan and Conan - a superhero kind of
he-man, I guess you'd say - and those aren't the kinds of fantasy that
appeal to me. Well, I don't need any more books anyway, but I thought
I'd see if you'd disagree with that. Is there more here than just that
it has an African hero?

That whole comparison to Tarzan and Conan was a marketing gimmick by the
publisher and is unfortunate because it puts off readers just like you.

The Imaro stories are about a character with more depth than just a he-man,
yes, he's physically strong and powerful but he also has a lot of emotional
issues too and the setting is a brilliant alternate universe magical Africa
that is just fascinating and wonderful to read about and the supporting
characters in the stories are vivid and fun and include feisty women too!
There's lots of fantasy in these books - shamanic wizardry and weird
creatures and monsters and supernatural beings.

Definitely give Imaro a try and Saunder's Dossouye series too.

Cheers!

OK, I'll give it a try sometime. Thanks for the tip, Amy.

Hello,

My name is Robert Day. I am an Australian fantasy author who has recently
finished a novel, titled Demon Gates. I have published my manuscript online in
eBook format on www.amazon.com, www.amazon.co.uk, as well as
www.smashwords.com. Free sample downloads are available, as well as other
downloadable information soon to come on my website www.robertdaybooks.com which
will hopefully be up and running soon.

Let me tell you a little bit about my novel, Book 1 of the Nexus Wars Saga....

Demon Gates is set in the realm of Kil'Tar, a magic-rich land with a long
history of bloody war between the Kay`taari and the Ashar'an. Aided by
Dragonkind, the Kay'taari have protected the world against the Ashar'an and
their demonic followers for many centuries. With demonkind banished to the
Voids, and the Ashar'an all but destroyed, Kil'Tar has settled into an era of
peace.
However, the seals binding the portals to the voids are breaking, and the
Ashar'an no longer hide, for the Kay'taari have ceased to abide on Kil'Tar.
Can Valdieron, a young man raised in the small village of Shadowvale, fulfill
his destiny and rid the lands of this menace once and for all, or will he
falter, and condemn Kil'Tar to demonic destruction?

Kindest Regards,
Robert Day
