Families Like Ours is a social group and support network for diverse families, including parents, co-parents, children, extended family and friends.
Currently, our social membership spans the Perth metropolitan area and the south-west of WA. It includes parents, co-parents and expectant parents, gay dads, lesbian mums, transsexual parents, single parents, and children of all ages from birth to adults. The group also has an email list that allows people to connect from all over Australia. It provides an important support network for parents to discuss issues unique to our situation. The email list is also the place where planning social events occurs, and all members are encouraged to contribute ideas.
FLO was founded in order to provide social activities in the pride community that are family oriented. For many families living out in the suburbs, there was only a limited opportunity to engage in social activities with other pride families. Often their total community participation would be a once yearly visit to Fair Day.
FLO is organised around a principle of cooperation. All members are encouraged to suggest and plan events. Moreover, participation at FLO events is not limited only to members. New families are always welcome to advertised events without prior contact.
The main aims of Families Like Ours are:
• To enable members to meet and socialise with other parents who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, queer or questioning.
• For our children to meet others in similar circumstances, in order to help decrease the feeling of isolation, and normalise their family situation
• To communicate to the pride community the necessity to provide social activities that are child-friendly
• To communicate to the wider community that pride families are just as important and not so different from other families, that samesex parents can provide and sustain happy, healthy families
