Welcome to the group! I don't chime in often but I do check in, and noticed your
message. I wholeheartedly second the advice to buy Denis Ledoux's book "Photo
Scribe", but I'd also highly recommend his original writing book, "Turning
Memories into Memoirs".  Though I have several other books, two of which are
also favorites of mine, it was Denis' book that really motivated me and gave me
the techniques I needed to write my initial "Life Stories".

Also I am an avid scrapbooker, but it is true that you can keep it much simpler.
One way to combine your writing and your photos is to use photo protector pages
(the ones with the pockets), and set aside one of those pockets for a journaling
block.  That way you are getting your photos stored, but are also storing the
story behind them right alongside them.  That's why I love to scrapbook.  I
don't do extra fancy stuff, but rather I concentrate on coordinating photos and
writing to fully capture those special moments and to give a complete picture of
my life events.
