Welcome to the group! I don't chime in often but I do check in, and noticed your
message. I wholeheartedly second the advice to buy Denis Ledoux's book "Photo
Scribe", but I'd also highly recommend his original writing book, "Turning
Memories into Memoirs". Though I have several other books, two of which are
also favorites of mine, it was Denis' book that really motivated me and gave me
the techniques I needed to write my initial "Life Stories".

Also I am an avid scrapbooker, but it is true that you can keep it much simpler.
One way to combine your writing and your photos is to use photo protector pages
(the ones with the pockets), and set aside one of those pockets for a journaling
block. That way you are getting your photos stored, but are also storing the
story behind them right alongside them. That's why I love to scrapbook. I
don't do extra fancy stuff, but rather I concentrate on coordinating photos and
writing to fully capture those special moments and to give a complete picture of
my life events.

My name is Dina and I am a History (US and African American Studies)major at
Kean University in New Jersey...

I am completely fascinated by the colonial period of our history and decided to
start researching the family histories of African American slaves that played a
major role in US history...

I am currently working on a slave that was owned by George Washington and during
the process have become addicted to genealogy...

Any pointers/help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Everyone!

I started just recenlty this year on my family's history. I have possession of
my mother's photos (her side of the family) and my grandmother's photos (from my
dads side of the family). I have been spending a lot of time tying to put them
in some sort of order by size, then the clothes they wear, and who I know in
them. The pictures of people I don't know, I have put aside for the time being.
My uncle and I are the only ones left who would know who's who and my uncle is
in Florida (I am in Michigan). I am hoping he comes up for a visit soon to look
through them with me. Most of my mom's I have figured out, but my grandmothers
are more difficult. I am currently working on an album called "In Loving
Memory", and then from there I will do a heritage album. I have been
scrapbooking for 7 plus years and have been pushing my self on my current album.
My son has done family history on his fathers side of the family dating back
tothe 1600's. I've only been able to go back on my side of the family to the
1800's so far. There is so much research I need to do.

My dad's mother is from Russia as her mother.
My dad's father is from Italy.
My mother is unknown as of yet.

My mother did not save much and what she did, my brothers threw away after she
passed away. I am so upset with them for doing so. I do have my mothers bible,
but I need to locate it yet.

Any help for research is appreciated. What on the internet is available without
a free? I need to get to the main library in Detroit, MI next.

I look forward to talking to everyone and I loved the photo section.

Great Scrapbookin'

Me too Gerry, it has become my passion to get as much as I can recorded in
different place so my descendants won't run into the same problems I have...I
want to make it a little easier for them if they get bitten by the gen-bug!lol
We don't have a lot of written records for my family.
Do you have a blog? Mine is treasuredroots.blogspot.com/
It is not a commercial blog but a personal family history/genealogy blog.
I guess it's alright to share things like that here....guess I just did! lol

Well, a family tree is usually a graphic representation of you and your
direct ancestors. This might be a typical pedigree chart or it might be a
graphic depiction of an actual tree with names on the branches or apples or
somesuch. This sort of chart is really a good way to start your family history
  account.

One popular family history layout would be to allow one chapter for each
generation. You might start with your oldest ancestor, and work down through
his descendants. Or you might start with yourself and work back to your
earliest ancestor.

A little though reveals that you are going to be dealing with a number of
surnames per generation. Many people like to make a separate history for
each major surname.

You might want to start a simple family history with a title such as, "Me
and My Nearest Relatives," and write what you can about each person you know
or have met. If I did this, it would include accounts of my life and
times, my children and what they are doing, their children and where they are.
Probably with pictures of all. Then I would also have pictures and stories
about my parents, my four grandparents and their children whom I knew and
remember, and my great-grandparents including stories my parents told me
about their grandparents. This would be a priceless treasure to your posterity,
even if you never got any further back on the family tree. Anyone could
easily do this on the word processor that came with your computer, or even on
your kitchen table writing by hand in a spiral notebook. If I were going
to write it by hand, I would use wide-lined notebook paper in a 3 ring
notebook. I would add picture pages of plain card stock. Then I would have the
whole thing photo-copied so it is acid-free and won't turn yellow. You might
already have a printer that would make really nice copies of the picture
pages. Things are a little easier for Family Historians than they were 10 or
15 years ago.

Hope you can get started right away.

Hello, I have gotten hundreds of free kits off a digital scrapbook search engine
and due to the quantity, I organize them by themes. I then put them on a DVD
since it holds a lot. I have a separate folder for alphabets and numbers, quick
pages and other random add ons and tutorials. By having them organized from the
first download keeps it quick and easily accessible. Hope this helps.

Welcome, How wonderful that you received all of those family pictures. There
are a lot of things that can be helpful. Work backwards, ask anyone tht is left
in the family lots of questions and send them copies or whatever to try to
identify. Also, posting lots of adds on Ancestry and genealogy.com,
rootsweb.com, can be very helpful.. they were for me and my family. Somebody
out there will be into genealogy and will eventually see your ads and respond.
These sites are all free to use the bulletin boards/message boards. Also,
google names and places and I cannot tell you how much information, pictures,
and distant cousins I have found that have told me who was who. Also, google
Genweb.. through this, each state has a website, and there are county sites,
etc. Lots and lots of info to sift through. Again, these have helped me
tremendously and I have made a lot of contacts. Sometimes it just takes getting
one name to click and then it all explodes. Be patient and be expectant,
because you will make some good finds and discoveries. Again, start with what
you know. Really look at the pictures. Sometimes people keep them grouped in
certain ways and that can tell you a lot. If there are any old letters, those
can be helpful as well.

Good luck to you and if you have any questions, I would be happy to help you by
my experiences.

Sue

with a large part of my searching with an Uncle and Aunt that were VERY BIG on
research and recording and compiled a couple of books in their travels on one
side of our family but now I want to explore my husbands fathers side (mother's
side is the one that is currently being researched) My husband's father is
deceased as well as grandfather and the family split with the grandfather's
brothers but we inheired the original family bible and a HUGE 18 gallon tote of
papers and pictures from that families side some of the things are badly damaged
looks like water some are original nursing journals from patient care before
medical records were kept and only the nurse's kept daily health notes (great
grandma was a nurse we found a nursing picture but have no idea which one is her
yet) some pictures are those that you colored yourself to make them in color
some are tin types many are those pictures where everyone looks so stolic. These
things were going to be thrown away as no surviving members wanted the stuff as
all relatives are pretty distant. My problem is most of these are not
labeled.......my thought is just to try and put the pictures into maybe dates by
the clothes or the items in the pictures first is this where I should start?
