Update: I ordered an 897D this afternoon. Try as I might, I couldn't
fight the urge not to buy one. So when it arrives I'll have to adjust
to the conflicting feelings of "I didn't really need this" and
the "Woo-hoo I bought it" thoughts. From previous experience I
suspect the "Woo-hoo" will win out....

Larry,

I use my 897 for psk31 (HRD's Deluxe psk) as well as SSTV using dig mode
with no problems through my rigblaster nomic wired per schematic in
files section. Can't recall if there was a menu setting or not. Others
will chime in I'm sure.

BTW, qth is Sonora, Ca. glad to hear from another gold country 897
user.

I am trying to get the Freq. display in Mixw2 to read properly when I

use the digital connector for all of my audio. The problem is when I

backwards. It puts 14.070 to the far right and 14.065 to the left and
the PSK sigs are from 14.070 down. If I put the radio in mode USB then
it reads properly but you can't transmit from the Digi connector in
the rear. Any help??? Thanks, Larry B. KD6WI Placerville CA

They hire a new set of inexperienced engineers.
As the radio is already invented they try to improve things.

Just after I turned the rig on last night for a QRP sched on top band with
members of the
local club, the rig failed to respond to any front panel dial or switch or Mic
key. Turning
the PSU off for a while resolved the problem for at most a few seconds only (the
rig was on
immediately power was applied). After several attempts I performed a [F] +
[V/M] reset
which cured things for the rest of the sched and all is still well this morning.

Two days before we had performed the 40m expansion mod - all was fine after
this. I do
have a microham Y8 interface connected and all is well with it still connected
now.

However, the only other recent change, is the addition of the MH-59A8J mic and I
had
been experimenting with setting up the ACC key to see which functions would be
most
useful. I think this was left on Menu 75 to see if I could quickly change power
settings
remotely ---NO! All was working well at the time of the switch-off prior to the
lock up. I
have just repeated setting the Mic [ACC] key to Menu 75 and cannot repeat the
fault.

Have any others experienced this ?computer? lockup and is it a known 'feature'?

The 751A is known for outstanding audio. It has better receive audio
than any of my other rigs, even the 746. If you compare anything else
to it, you will probably be disappointed.

I think my Icoms have better receive than the Yaesus.

Thanks for the input Clark. Maybe I'll just pickup a dedicated 2m
allmode like a later model kenwood and use the Icom 751a for HF,
leaving the 703 for backup. It's strange how a manufacturer can have
a rig with excellent audio quality and noise blanking from one era
and then not have the same with a newer rig, unless it's just having
so much "under the hood" . On the other hand, the 897 has been
tugging at the wallet portion of my brain now for a few months....

Hi Woody -

I have the 817, 897 and the 703 here (among other rigs, yikes!)

I find the audio from the 703 more pleasant than either Yaesu rig. The Yaesu's
have
less AGC action on the stronger signals, as far as I can tell, and I plan
(someday!) to
get in and change the time constant and make it sound a little smoother. It is
not a
big difference, though.

The Noise Blankers appear to be roughly the same at my QTH. I've used them all
mobile and in the shack, they work "mediocre" when considering the different
kinds of
QRN I can get. I compare with my Kenwood 440 (great noise blanker) and my Ten
Tec
OMNI VI (almost great noise blanker). I often use the Timewave ANC-4 to kick
the
awful QRN that my noise blanker won't touch. Neat unit.

This may be a strange question, but here goes....

I have an Icom 703 Plus and for the most part I'm pretty happy with
it, with a couple exceptions - the quality of the rx audio, and the
noise blanker. In direct comparisons pitting the 703 against my Icom
751A, (using the same external speaker), the 751a's audio is much
cleaner, and the NB works great (whereas the 703's NB is mediocre).
So I've been looking at the 857 or 897 and was wondering how you
fellows rated the receive audio and noise blanker - are you happy
with it? Have you noticed a difference between either one and an
older rig? I'd like to have a rig with HF and VHF/UHF in it, but I
don't want to spend the extra bux if I won't like the audio or
ineffective noise blanking (in which case I'll pick up a separate VHF
all mode rig).

Tnx
Woody

Do you leave your feedline connected to your rig when off the air? Is
so, you may have zapped the front end from static build-up on your
antenna. Under right conditions, even dry clouds passing over your QTH
can generate sufficient charges to do damage.

ALWAYS disconnect feedlines from rigs when done operating or . . . you
will be DONE operating.

Two years ago, when I got my first FT-897, I noticed that whenever
the fans came on I could hear fan noise in my headphones. For the
past few months, using a relatively new FT-897D, I have noticed the
same problem. For voice modes, it is a nuisance I can live with.
However, I just found out it is a killer on PSK31.

Today, I had a few PSK31 QSOs with stations that had weak signals.
Every time they replied to my transmissions, the first several
seconds were garbled. Then, like the flip of a switch, the rest of
their transmission would be 100%. Then it occurred to me--there
must be fan noise in the receive audio at the data connector! This
is what is happening:

Being a 100% duty cycle mode, PSK31 causes the finals to heat up (I
run it at 50W, just to be safe), so the fans come on, and stay on
for several seconds after transmission ends. Sure enough, when the
fans shut off, the previously garbled receive data stream clears up.

Has anyone else noticed fan noise in the receive audio? Has anyone
found a solution? If there is no existing fix, I guess I can try
wiring the fans with series inductors and parallel capacitors.

--Mike (N6QG)

Hello Mike,
First of all 50W is still a little on the high side for PSK31. To be really
safe it should be kept to 30W or less. That will still be plenty of power
for this mode. Even at this power the fan will come on as you describe but I
have not noticed any sign of the noise you mention. I suggest you have a fault
that needs investigating.

Michael,

Go to the hidden menu and check the values of no 001 HF1-RXG, no 002
HF2-RXG and no 003 HF3-RXG. If numbers 2 and/or 3 are low that might
cause your problem. (I.e. my values for nr 2 is 97 and for 3 163).
G4VSQ descibed the problem of the suddenly deaf 857's in an article
in, I think, the 857 group. Of course: be careful in handling the
hidden menu!!!

Subject: Fan Noise in Receive Audio Kills PSK31

A little background first.

At 56 years old (I am now 57) I returned to school full time as I only had
an 8th grade education. I am finishing my 2nd year at Chemeketa College in
Salem Oregon. From here I will go to Western Oregon University in Monmouth
for my Bachelors Degree.

I am taking my entire second year of Spanish (12 Credits) in 6 weeks from
June 17th to July 30 of 2005 in Quito Ecuador. I have bartered and traded to
the point I know have my FT-897 and an Alinco DM-330MV and two FNB-78 from
W4RT, so I will be DX in Quito for six weeks.

Since I will be staying with a family in Quito I would like to keep my
equipment at a minimum. What I need is an ATAS-120 Screwdriver Antenna. The
$300.00 plus, price tag is more then a starving student can afford.

I am looking for a Yaesu ATAS-120 or maybe an ATAS-100 for something more in
line with my income ($0.00 except for loans and grants and scholarships).
Any dealer or philanthropists are welcome to participate in funding my trip,
but I have a few dollars stuck back for an antenna for the trip.

I also need a CD-24 charger and would like to have a CT-62 CAT Cable.

TNX for your time and looking forward to offers at a price I can afford.

The FT897 Group averages around 320 (+/-100 one-sigma) messages
per month. Because the volume of messages is rather large, I would
like to remind everyone of a few long-standing FT897 guidelines to
follow. Most of you do so already.

1. Civility. (This is practiced well by our members!)

2. Please sign your messages with name and call sign, e.g.,
     Fred - W1XYZ.

3. When replying to a posting (message), kindly delete all
unnecessary text including the trailing text. Only leave the text
from the prior message to which you are replying ... <snip> the
rest. If one desires to read the entire thread, the command [Up
Thread] at the top of the message can be used to read the entire
discussion. Remember also that a lot of members have slow
connections and some even pay connect time or characters rx/tx. This
also helps the clarity of your message.

4. When replying to a post, please decide if your comment should be
to the entire group of over 2,000 or directly to the author of the
post. When you click on "Reply," it goes to everyone. To reply
direct (simplex), you should click on the email address following the
user ID line at the top of the post. Notice that only a part is
shown for privacy. Also, please think about if what you are about to
post in reply to the group really should be to the group ... replies
like "I sure do agree with that" doesn't add much to the group. Send
thoughts like those direct to the poster please.

5. It is fine for members to post something for sale or wanted to
buy ... once per item(s). All questions and offers to buy/sell
should be made directly to the poster, not to the Group. The member
posting the FS or WTB may post that the item(s) was/were
sold/purchased.

6. Posting of commercial items for sale by manufacturers or dealers
is also fine, but should be done on an infrequent basis. The FT897
members benefit by learning of hardware, software, sales, etc. before
it appears in magazines, etc.

7. New members are all moderated until their first posting. If it
follows the guidelines, it is approved and the member is change to
unmoderated status. This list is a partially moderated list, i.e.,
only first message is moderated while later messages are monitored
after posting. If an unmoderated posting is found by the moderators
to have a problem, then the poster is contacted directly to resolve.
Actions are taken against those that chronically violate the rules.
The reason for this form of moderation is to block spammers from the
list and it has been working.

8. Do not add disclaimers to your posts that (1) restrict the ability of other
members to use the information you post, (2) claim a copyright to your post, or
(3) to claim any type of "rights" as a consequence of another member replying to
you post either directly to you or to the group.8. Do not add disclaimers to

I have had this happen and determined it to be RF feedback. In
really bad cases, the rig shuts off and powers back on again...

Get your antenna farther away from the rig, and/or check your
grounding.

All of a sudden my FT-897 has considerably reduced receive on all
frequencies above 10Mhz. I can received the 10Mhz time signal well but
when I tune to Ham frequencies such as 20M, 17, 15 etc the received is
significantly reduced, almost undectable. However, I can receive 40M,
60M and 80M quite well with the same antenna. I've tried various
antennas with the same reduced results on the higher frequences. Does
anyone know the cause or remedy before I have to send it in for repair?

Thanks, Mike

Folks,

Many of you are getting sloppy about deleting/snipping/eliminating
the unnecessary part of the message when you reply to a posting.

Please take a few seconds and remove the unnecessary part of the
message (including the stuff at the end of the message put there by
Yahoo!).

This reduces bandwidth and makes your message easier to read.

Also, change the content of the subject line as appropriate too.

If someone is trying to understand the context of your message, he
can use the "Up Thread" command (if using the web).

Tnx es Happy New Year,

Hi Myles,

Just found a article in the official magazine of the VERON (Dutch) by Arie
Dogterom , PA0EZ (pa0ez@...).
He found a article in in the Radio REF-Union (France) written by J.P.
Gendner , F5BU called "GALVA".
Go to http://www.radioamateur.org/download
From there go to: "Fichiers a telecharger" (left in bleu) en then further
"Electronique" (middle in red)
There you found "Galva"

Dear users of the FT-857 and FT-897,
First of all I wish every one a Happy New Year and a good DX 2005.
But now my problem, when I want to operat on HF (7MHz and 14MHz) and
my CAT cable is still in my rig then first with low power the "fast"
symbol start to blink. And when I gonna talk (USB) the voltage drops
(says de FT-857) to about 9,0 V. Measnwhile I look at the powersuply
and that one says there is no power drop (it's a EPA-9300 max. 28A and
peak op 32A).
But when I disconnect the CAT (I pull the connector out of the back of
the FT-857), there is no problem... I can op. on both 14 and 7 MHz.
Do anyone know a way how to solve this problem?

73's and best regrads!

Karel and all members,

Please do NOT attempt to load large files or images to the Files or
Photos Sections of this group. Each section is limited to only 20
MB. I am sure you understand that taking up about 20% of a Section
with a single image isn't a good idea.

Options are perhaps as follows:

1. Send the image to those interested directly as an attachment.
Communicate simplex or direct ... not on this list. Also,
attachments to messages on this list are not allowed.

2. Decrease the file size to something reasonable (< 50 KB) and
upload to the appropriate section.

3. Locate the image to another site and reference the appropriate url.

Be advised that I do look through the photos and files frequently and
remove (w/o notice) oversized files and aged material. This is
necessary to make room for new material since Yahoo! will not
increase the size of the two Sections.

Tnx es 73,
Barry W4WB

Myles,

See my message 9460. In the end I have managed to create a folder in
the files section and to upload a jpg version of the faceplate. You
will find it in the files section in the folder "SMeter PA3AKF".
Hope you can use it. If you need the bitmap version let me know.
