If you are using your 817 without the batteries and only with the charger the
radio will not work properly. You only get a charger with the 817 not a power
supply. If you use the radio without the battery you will need a 12 Volt supply
with about 3 amps.
   I hope that helps,

The FT817 Group averages over 500 (+/-130 one-sigma) messages
per month. Because the volume of messages is rather large, I would
like to remind everyone of a few long-standing FT817 guidelines to
follow. Most of you do so already.

1. Civility. (This is practiced well by our members!)

2. Please sign your messages with name and call sign, e.g.,
     Fred - W1XYZ.

3. When replying to a posting (message), kindly delete all
unnecessary text including the trailing text. Only leave the text
from the prior message to which you are replying ... <snip> the
rest. If one desires to read the entire thread, the command [Up
Thread] at the top of the message can be used to read the entire
discussion. Remember also that a lot of members have slow
connections and some even pay connect time or characters rx/tx. This
also helps the clarity of your message.

4. When replying to a post, please decide if your comment should be
to the entire group of over 5,000 or directly to the author of the
post. When you click on "Reply," it goes to everyone. To reply
direct (simplex), you should click on the email address following the
user ID line at the top of the post. Notice that only a part is
shown for privacy. Also, please think about if what you are about to
post in reply to the group really should be to the group ... replies
like "I sure do agree with that" doesn't add much to the group. Send
thoughts like those direct to the poster please.

5. It is fine for members to post something for sale or wanted to
buy ... once per item(s). All questions and offers to buy/sell
should be made directly to the poster, not to the Group. The member
posting the FS or WTB may post that the item(s) was/were
sold/purchased.

6. Posting of commercial items for sale by manufacturers or dealers
is also fine, but should be done on an infrequent basis. The FT817
members benefit by learning of hardware, software, sales, etc. before
it appears in magazines, etc.

7. New members are all moderated until their first posting. If it
follows the guidelines, it is approved and the member is change to
unmoderated status. This list is a partially moderated list, i.e.,
only first message is moderated while later messages are monitored
after posting. If an unmoderated posting is found by the moderators
to have a problem, then the poster is contacted directly to resolve.
Actions are taken against those that chronically violate the rules.
The reason for this form of moderation is to block spammers from the
list and it has been working.

8. Do not add disclaimers to your posts that (1) restrict the ability
of other members to use the information you post, (2) claim a copyright
to your post, or (3) to claim any type of "rights" as a consequence of
another member replying to you post either directly to you or to the group.

Hi everyone.
My name is Joe W2JLH. I purchased a Ft817nd this summer and have
hardly used it. Original box instructions and reciept and The
Miricale whip antenna included with the sale. $500.00 Thats all I
want.

You might ask why? I moved to Staten Island in May 2006, and the
guys from the wb2hww repeater were experimenting with a 10m and I
decided to purchase a small rig and do a little hf. However I quickly
found out that I just dont have the time or pacience to operate qrp.
Really I just dont have the time. I would prefer to sell it to
someone in the area so that we can meet and do the exchange but if
not we can work it out. Its a good deal guys and I would not lie to
you -- I am of Christian Faith and would NOT LIE TO YOU OR BE
DECIETFUL. Today was the HOSARC Hamfest and I had my friend K2KHV
CLUB MEMBER put IT out at the hosarc member table for sale but people
at hamfests want everything for peanuts....LOTS OF LOOKERS BUT NOONE
BOUGHT IT. Again its a fair price considering that I am including
the miriclae whip antenna with it.

You can email me at w2jlh@.... If your serious and are close
by I am willing to drive to you and do the sale.

Thanks everyone and God Bless You
Sincerely,
Jose Hernandez

I had a slight problem and they stepped right up to help their customer.
I delt with Jeff Park.
Not only was the service good, but their prices were the best in the

I bought a Yaesu FT-817ND for just $529.00.

I have no personal intrest in Hamcity, just wanted to pass along how
happy I am with the store.

Well, that well know Ham Radio seller with stores everywhere
(originally from W6) is showing a $50 rebate making the new price
$549.95. Best price I've seen since I got mine new (sans -ND) with
the $100 Yaesu rebate back a couple years.

I'm tempted to get another one!

Hurry up before it's too late. Ham City has the $50 rebate also, but
they apparently cannot subtract: Their math: $599-50 = $529. I like it!

Hello, 817'ers-

My great little FT-817 lost it's interface with me in the middle of a
long RX session. The display (3 lines X 12 spaces) went to nonsense.
Some are completely blank; some are all-black rectangles; a couple
appear to be Japanese characters; others are alpha-numeric. One
minute the display was fine; the next it had gone wonky. There it remains.

The radio works great - Its just that I can't know what I'm doing:
band, freq., mode, etc. etc. I am flying blind. I've used all the
resets techniques available through the documentation on this reflector
- nothing changes.

I know the radio works great because I connected it to my laptop and ran
Commander, and all appears completely normal. It receives and transmits
FB. Anything I can change using Commander, changes perfectly. The
problem appears to be limited to the 817's display window.

Questions for the reflector:

1. Has anyone had this kind of problem before? (I'm hoping for a
quick-fix here, or some kind of stupid operator error revelation)

2. What is the best repair facility for this FT-817? (Where they know
what they are doing; don't take forever, and don't want Ft. Knox for the
service). (negative experience would be valuable, too - the places to
avoid!)

Any assistance and insight will be appreciated.

Bill, W5GVE

Hi All,

I have just purchased an FT-817ND and first thing I noticed was the
apparant overload of the AGC or audio line with strong "product
detected" signals so may have referred to here - IPO and ATT didn't
help - as I initially thought it would.

I also own an FT-897D which initially had similar problems. I have
made some mods to it derived from DG2AIQ's "Modification Sheet".

I have made the AGC hang time a bit longer by paralleling a 4.7 uF cap
on C1503 - Which, for all that I can see in the schematics, is
equivalent to C1324 on FT-817... Has anyone tried this on an out of
warranty unit yet?

I have also done the "eliminate audio overload af audio IC" mod which
is a 470K parallel resistor over R1421 (100K) - Which, again, as far
as I can see is equivalent to R1312 (100K) on FT-817! Again: Has
anyone tried this on an out of warranty unit?

The last mod for FT-897 has, according to DG2AIQ, been in a "Yaesu
troubleshooting note": TSN-0405/02 in june 2005 as well.

Maybe there is a similar note for the FT-817, thus all of us with
warranties can have our units fixed at no cost!!! Hope Yaesu R&D reads
some of the threads here :o)

Hi there,

Just got a brand new FT-817ND.

I heard distortion immediately on CW and SSB and after a bit of
flicking switches and enabling the RF-GAIN control I came to the
conclusion that this problem was definitely NOT in the audio line.

Weak "product detected" signals sound OK, though CW is prone to cause
overload at even very low signal strengths.

I also own an FT-897D and this rig had a similar problem albeit not
quite as pronounced. DG2IAQ - and Yeasu - recognised this problem and
DG2IAQ has made a modification sheet for the FT-897 which inludes
this fix. Yeasu also has a paper on this according to DG2AIQ. I have
performed the modification (rig is out of warranty) consisting of
lowering a resistor by putting one parallel across it. It simply just
works. The sheet for FT-897 can be found here:

http://www.ham.dmz.ro/yaesu/ft-897-modification-sheet.php

I will, as soon as time allows, have a look at the schematics and try
to make a comparison between the circuits in the two rigs, they might
just be similar enough for us to derive a fix...

Maybe someone already has done this?

stages but rather the AGC detector diode D1064 (the always grounded
half) changing the load on IF buffer Q1054 when it conducts (or
something else in parallel with the output of the IF buffer behaving
in this fashion). That would account for the glitch in the sine wave
starting near the crest but ahead of it. Whether AGC is on or off,
this distortion occurs because the diode is always connected to the
IF. With AGC Off, audio clipping occurs at a much higher level out of
the demodulator and is apparent as a sloped, flat line. The glitch
also moves toward the zero crossing as the RF Gain or signal strength
is increased above the AGC threshold (whether AGC On or Off but much
less so when On, naturally), tending to become less visible on the
steeper slope. The tenor of the distortion also changes, tending to
less, as the IF p-p voltage delivered to D1064 rises well above its
conduction threshold.
>
> But it might be some other circuitry having this effect. This diode
conducts for a short period determined by the time constant of R1253
(1k) and C1281 (100p), i.e., ~1us max but a fraction of which
determined by the diode cutoff. That seems way too short for the
duration of the glitch observed - I would suspect something with a
time constant of at least 100uS.
>
> Problem is - this looks to be inherent in the design. If it is the
AGC detector (or other), then it should be buffered, or have a higher
impedance (increase R1253? with possibly adverse side effects), or IF
buffer Q1054 needs to be a lower source impedance. Any thoughts about
how these might be accomplished?
>
> Another difficulty with this theory - everybody should have the
same problem but few report it. I can accept that many people do not
have sufficiently acute hearing or the training to recognise
distortion. From many trials of various settings of the 817,
observation of OscilloMeter, and simulation using a neat multi-tone
generator software, MTG by Timo Esser,
http://www.esseraudiosolutions.com/mtg.htm , I have concluded that
one needs to hear at least the fifth harmonic to sense the distortion
on CW, i.e. 5kHz for a 1kHz CW beat note. An audio low pass or
bandpass filter between the receiver output and the brain will
mitigate the distortion on the CW note, but not so much for QRN and
SSB speech. That's why the distortion is less obvious on the in-built
speaker than on good headphones.
>
> At least one person has said that he can hear the distortion in my
sample recordings but does not hear it from his FT-817, concluding
that my 817 must be defective. Possibly the listening setup for the
MP3 player was not identical to that for his receiver. Another used
the same high quality headphones to listen to both and concluded that
his 817 has the same distortion as mine.

Here is some usful info on LCD Displays and Transfer ribbon...When you
clean.....best thing to use is lighter fluid...if somthing else..IT must not
leave any residue and must evaporate quickley....You must clean both parts of
the transfer ribbon and also clean the display glass where the ribbon cable sits
in.....Also clean the brass tabs on the pc bd.. when reasembling .....Leave
sit 5 or 10 minets....Try not to get finger prints on any of the connection..The
oil you body excrets will also cause problems on the LCD transfer
plate............Being a service tech here for consumer electronics.......14
years now.....I have see a lot of this problem.....on other stuff and ham
radios....One more thing to note is sometimes the transfer ribbon has a very
light film or glue on ......You can remove that with acid-tone,,Use Q tips..wont
hurt it...and the transfer ribbon will most of the time sit back in from where
you removed it.....Also not !!!!!!!!! when tearing these rigs
apart, ,,,,,,,be on a solid floor......not carpet , Static discharge ,,,no
matter how small can reck SMD devices...being carefull and taking you time is
important .....I like to thank all the input i have received on my broken
817,,got it going and happy camper here ...best73--==de==-- Henry

Well Hamcity.com still has them beat.
With shipping and no tax it walks out the door at $542.30.
Anyway you look at it its a such a great deal I had to buy my second 817!
The bang for the buck is just mindbending.
When I think what I paid for a 2 meter HT 15 years ago its just crazy!
Its all good for us QRPers and lovers of the 817.

NEVER use lighter fluid for these electronics. It can be destructive to adjacent
plastic pieces.
It can smudge and/or remove lettering on cases.

There are several commercial LCD polishers and cleansers on the market
specifically created
for this use.

Just my opinion... could be wrong....

I recently purchased a Yaesu 817ND. Although I have been a ham for
almost 30 years, this is the first time in the QRP world.

Are there any web sites, Yahoo groups or other places on the net to
get good data about QRP operation for a newbee?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The HFPack website and Yahoo Group is a great resource for maximizing the

CW operators -

I am about to buy the INRAD Filter for my 817. I think the Shape
Factor of the INRAD filters is better than the Yaesu or W4RT filters.

I have not decided on which to get, the 500 or 300 Hz filter.
Considering the tuning rate of the 817, is the 300 Hz filter too
narrow?

Has anyone had experience with either of these INRAD filters? If so,
what is your opinion of the filter?

Thanks

I tried both and you can tell a big difference between the 2 of them.
The 300 hz has reall steep skirts and relly does a super job of slicing off
QRM.
I have it in all 3 of my rigs.
