The FT817 Group averages over 500 (+/-130 one-sigma) messages
per month. Because the volume of messages is rather large, I would
like to remind everyone of a few long-standing FT817 guidelines to
follow. Most of you do so already.

1. Civility. (This is practiced well by our members!)

2. Please sign your messages with name and call sign, e.g.,
     Fred - W1XYZ.

3. When replying to a posting (message), kindly delete all
unnecessary text including the trailing text. Only leave the text
from the prior message to which you are replying ... <snip> the
rest. If one desires to read the entire thread, the command [Up
Thread] at the top of the message can be used to read the entire
discussion. Remember also that a lot of members have slow
connections and some even pay connect time or characters rx/tx. This
also helps the clarity of your message.

4. When replying to a post, please decide if your comment should be
to the entire group of over 5,000 or directly to the author of the
post. When you click on "Reply," it goes to everyone. To reply
direct (simplex), you should click on the email address following the
user ID line at the top of the post. Notice that only a part is
shown for privacy. Also, please think about if what you are about to
post in reply to the group really should be to the group ... replies
like "I sure do agree with that" doesn't add much to the group. Send
thoughts like those direct to the poster please.

5. It is fine for members to post something for sale or wanted to
buy ... once per item(s). All questions and offers to buy/sell
should be made directly to the poster, not to the Group. The member
posting the FS or WTB may post that the item(s) was/were
sold/purchased.

6. Posting of commercial items for sale by manufacturers or dealers
is also fine, but should be done on an infrequent basis. The FT817
members benefit by learning of hardware, software, sales, etc. before
it appears in magazines, etc.

7. New members are all moderated until their first posting. If it
follows the guidelines, it is approved and the member is change to
unmoderated status. This list is a partially moderated list, i.e.,
only first message is moderated while later messages are monitored
after posting. If an unmoderated posting is found by the moderators
to have a problem, then the poster is contacted directly to resolve.
Actions are taken against those that chronically violate the rules.
The reason for this form of moderation is to block spammers from the
list and it has been working.

8. Do not add disclaimers to your posts that (1) restrict the ability
of other members to use the information you post, (2) claim a copyright
to your post, or (3) to claim any type of "rights" as a consequence of
another member replying to you post either directly to you or to the group.

Thanks to all es 73,

Be aware that if you have NORMAL power out on 2 meters and 430-450 mhz, your
finals are GOOD so far! You may have selected the wrong antenna port, or a
relay could be bad. While testing, use the 2 1/2 watt or lower settings, to
reduce the chance you will blow them.
Remember, the SAME finals are used for ALL bands in the FT-817, so if
UHF/VHF is OK, look elsewhere for your problem. (Incorrect application/access
of
the "Hidden Menu" can also cause this.---73, KC3VO-Bob

They had the radio for two or three days. Shipping each way (PA to CA

It seems that the relays in my radio have somehow died... (or the
circuty that powers them rather.)

A few months ago my finals got blown .. i orderd and replaced, and
aligned the new PA .. worked like a champ.

Now after not using the radio for a couple of days, I turned it on..
When pressing the PTT the TX/RX lamp turns red. but the tx/rx relay
does not move... nor does the bandfilter switches/relays when i
change band ... and not the antenna relay either.

Last time .. when PAs blew .. the situation was almost the same...
I have checked the PA transistors this time and they seem to be ok.

Have anyone of you experienced this ?

What is the VOLTAGE you are using? Is it remaining above 8 volts,
(Preferably above 9 volts) when transmission is attempted? Use a good external
digital meter to check the voltage, NOT the FT-817 meter. If the voltage is,
or
goes low, it is normal to have relays fail to operate, and the CURE is to use
higher operating voltage. (10-14 volts works great, DO NOT use more than 16

The voltage is 13.8V, -+0.1V at TX the PSU is a mascot 5A switched
PSU. i recently switched to this PSU after using it on another radio
for many years without any problem.

The problem is that none of the relays in the radio work, and this
at RX aswell.

I just found the schematics and gonna take a look, if i only would
know the testpoint voltages, the schematics i have seem not to
mention that·

I have an early model in like new condition.
Not sure about the B3, what does that refer to.
Also are the ham bands the same as Canada?
Shipping cost might be another problem.

Hi All,

Have now got my new 817 and was playing around with it over the
weekend. One thing that I did notice was that the SWR produced with
the supplied rubber duckie was pretty high.

I would have thought that a factory supplied part would be pretty well
on the money.

The worse case senario was on 6 meters where saw 5 bars.

Is this to be expected or am I asking too much ?

Gene,

Look in the FAQ. Often one needs to perform the service reset, which
is not in the manual. With PWR OFF, hold F + V/M buttons while
turning ON PWR. Should hear 3 diddles.

I think you said it pretty well there......

Mine has not been on the radio since the first day I opened the box.
I didn't see it do much beyond act as a dummy load. I have found
several good whips that perform much better. My FT-60 rubber duck
performs better on 2M than the one that came with the 817.

Actually, I don't even remember what box I tossed it in :)

Hi all, I've been a lurker for a long time.

I recently replaced the finals board on my '817, thanks all for the
great posts and links to 'hand holding ' ;) info that was very
useful in changing out the board.

Now I have a 'spare' board - have any of you ventured to replace the
FET's on a final board? I haven't found any FAQ or links to any
information on changing out the FET's themselves.

Anyone have any info on that? 'upgrades' to the funal / alternate
transistors, etc?

When I called Yeasu to order the final board, the guy told me there
were only about 35 of them left, and that they were not going to do
another run. I know knowlege varies from one tech to another on that
sort of thing, wonder if anyone could verify that?

If that is truly the case, then I want to be able to change to FET's
on this 'spare' board for sure.

This is a great group to lurk, if I've missed something obvious I
apologize in advance.

Hi Pete,

I've found the SWR on 2 & 70 to be perfectly reasonable. Due to the
small size of the rig, it does help if you have a hand resting on the
case - or on 6m ideally a small length of wire attached to the back of
the rig.

Remember most hand held radios use the operator's body as a ground
plane / counterpoise. The FT817 is essentially the same size - but
there's no guarantee you're in physical contact to 'balance' the
antenna.

I think you should see a reduction in SWR with the supplied antenna if
you provide some form of counterpoise - I do with mine.

I do agree with the others though - the supplied rubber helicals are
somewhat inefficient, but then they are small and portable. I make
good use of them - but agree they won't win any performance awards.

I made a portable multiband dipole for 6/2/70 - essentially a fan
dipole covering the three bands, but with the elements running
parallel. This is easy to do using PC 'ribbon' cable - just split
the conductors into 3 sets, chop appropriately for 1/2 wave on the 3
bands, attach string to ends - and then string up horizontally /
vertically when portable and you have a pretty decent performing
antenna which rolls up and fits in a pocket when not in use :)

I've considered doing the same. I'd have thought the 817 had enough
space internally for some non-surface mount FET's - and hopefully this
would make it slightly more robust! However, I've not had time to
investigate further.

> When I called Yeasu to order the final board, the guy told me there

I can't see that being true, as the 817 is still in production, and
most companies supply spares for a good few years after production
ceases. It's such a popular radio I can't see production halting
anytime soon.

However, if there's any truth in what you heard, it would be very
worrying indeed.

> If that is truly the case, then I want to be able to change to FET's

Too right!

> This is a great group to lurk, if I've missed something obvious I

I don't think you've missed anything obvious - and 'upgrading' the
FET's must have gone through many peoples minds. I don't recall anyone
having done it though - but this might perhaps be to the low cost of
the finals board. Cost vs hassle :)

If there are ever problems with suplly of replacement finals - I'm sure
someone will come up with a solution. There's too many of these
radios in circulation to just be consigned to the trash.

However, I can't see Yaesu causing a parts shortage - as the finals
boards are required for the continual production of the 817. I'm not
sure if they have production runs purely as 'spares' - but ... even so
it doesn't make much sense.

I hope your tech guy was just misinformed :)

Being in the military I get plenty of use of my 817 as a portable and
I use my supplied rubber ducky. I have found that my swr on 2 meters
is fairly good, like to go from 0 to 2 on occasion, but 6 meters is
high. Diamond has a triband handi antena, the make a sma and a bnc
model. I came across it on HRO's site. Hope you find a decent
solution.

Folks,

It appears that the Archive is not showing the more recent messages
(approaching 100). If it doesn't clear up, I will contact Yahoo!
tomorrow to check on it.

Can you just buy the Heil Clearspeech at

http://www.heilsound.com/amateur/clear_speech_speaker.htm

and get the same dsp stuff an not go into the FT-817?
Can be used for other rigs too without modification...

A friend of mine has the clearspeech in his SUV. Make
it sound like you are next to someone if you use it.
Does is work ok with the 817 the same way?

Just curious...
