It is also the same connector used on older computer mice.

Pay attention: the mice's connector is the same, but NOT ALL wires are
connected, and normally there is no screening on that. The Mac cables are very
good ones, with heavy screening, and I recommend their use.
You may see some notes of mine in the HRD forum,
http://www.ham-radio.ch/forums/viewtopic.php?t=300
  and also
http://www.ham-radio.ch/forums/index.php?c=6
Those notes covers both 8 and 6 pins cables.
There are also keyboard and mice extensions cables available: they have all pins
connected and in my case I found a very good heavy screening braid connected to
the rings. They are far better than normal mice cables, apart for thickness and
flex.

Just fitted a Colins narrow cw filter from Jim, K8DRN to my new
FT817ND & WOW - an already super QRP cw rig is made into a GREAT one,
hi!

Look out for me on or around all the usual QRP cw QRGs folks.
Most of my activity is (UK) evenings & weekends. Mostly 40 & 80m
right now during evenings until propagation picks up so, hopefully be
working you boys over the pond further into the year when the higher
bands are (hopefully) still open on getting home from the saltmines,

Well, I didn't have any mac cables laying around. Prefer PCs. I
had a mouse cable and all the pins/wires were connected and it had

not make it bad. Worked for me. I prefer stuff in my junk box if I

Hi Bill,

The T1 can handle very high-SWR loads, like other wide-range ATUs based on the
L-
network configuration. To give you one example, I have a 50-foot random wire at
my QTH
that the T1 loads very effectively on 80-6 meters.

To put a number on it, the T1 will typically handle 10:1 or higher SWR, with
reduced range on 160 m.

Hi, the Mac cables are minidin 8 pins male, the mouse and keyboard (ps2) are

FT817@yahoogroups.com

The FT817 Group averages over 500 (+/-130 one-sigma) messages
per month. Because the volume of messages is rather large, I would
like to remind everyone of a few long-standing FT817 guidelines to
follow. Most of you do so already.

1. Civility. (This is practiced well by our members!)

2. Please sign your messages with name and call sign, e.g.,
     Fred - W1XYZ.

3. When replying to a posting (message), kindly delete all
unnecessary text including the trailing text. Only leave the text
from the prior message to which you are replying ... <snip> the
rest. If one desires to read the entire thread, the command [Up
Thread] at the top of the message can be used to read the entire
discussion. Remember also that a lot of members have slow
connections and some even pay connect time or characters rx/tx. This
also helps the clarity of your message.

4. When replying to a post, please decide if your comment should be
to the entire group of over 5,000 or directly to the author of the
post. When you click on "Reply," it goes to everyone. To reply
direct (simplex), you should click on the email address following the
user ID line at the top of the post. Notice that only a part is
shown for privacy. Also, please think about if what you are about to
post in reply to the group really should be to the group ... replies
like "I sure do agree with that" doesn't add much to the group. Send
thoughts like those direct to the poster please.

5. It is fine for members to post something for sale or wanted to
buy ... once per item(s). All questions and offers to buy/sell
should be made directly to the poster, not to the Group. The member
posting the FS or WTB may post that the item(s) was/were
sold/purchased.

6. Posting of commercial items for sale by manufacturers or dealers
is also fine, but should be done on an infrequent basis. The FT817
members benefit by learning of hardware, software, sales, etc. before
it appears in magazines, etc.

7. New members are all moderated until their first posting. If it
follows the guidelines, it is approved and the member is change to
unmoderated status. This list is a partially moderated list, i.e.,
only first message is moderated while later messages are monitored
after posting. If an unmoderated posting is found by the moderators
to have a problem, then the poster is contacted directly to resolve.
Actions are taken against those that chronically violate the rules.
The reason for this form of moderation is to block spammers from the
list and it has been working.

8. Do not add disclaimers to your posts that (1) restrict the ability
of other members to use the information you post, (2) claim a copyright
to your post, or (3) to claim any type of "rights" as a consequence of
another member replying to you post either directly to you or to the group.

Thanks to all es 73,

I did forget to mention that there are around also many minidin 6 pins adapters,
i.e. minidin 6 male and female to db9 male and female, minidin 6 pins to din 5
pins : these may be also useful for using some odd cable you have in the junk
box. I have lot of old hifi or audio din cables, I normally used them also for
packet and controllers; using them with the adapters may be also a solution.
Soldering a db9 or a din is easier than minidin, and so this is another way. On
the other side, molded cables are rugged and they are reliable.... Another
adapter I use on the ft817 is a mono to stereo plug adapter for the headphone: I
use a very good (and strangely not too expensive) and comfortable HiFi
headphone, very sensitive, and I do not like to have different levels L & R,
and do not like to use the earphone switch.... but this is a matter of opinions.
What I absolutely do not like in the FT817 is the unbelievable power connector
and CAT Undocumentation.
But this is another tune .... 73s de Augusto I2JJR

I just bought an 817ND at the end of Decmeber. At the end of January
I noticed an extra side tone when I was practicing sending code. It
was at 2.2 KHz approx. I viewed it on Mixw using the waterfall
display. I sent the radio into Yaesu for repair. After three weeks
and a few phone calls on my part. I found out that Engineering
Japan has been brought in to try to figure out what is going on.
They pulled a few more radios and found the same problem. They have
no time line on when they will figure out how to fix it.

If you find this problem you may want to get in touch with Yaesu so
they document it for your warranty.

when using this with a fully charged internal ni-cad pack after

of charging.Indicated voltage on 817 display when psu connected is

I have owned the two model, and as far as I noticed:

1.- ND has 3 displays colors

2.- ND has a sigly higher charging current for the internal batteries

3.- ND has solved the errata about noise blanker adjustment, but do not
spect too much from it.

All other things are exactly the same like the no ND model.

Don't forget the addition of 60 meter coverage on the ND.

As I understand it, the main differences between the 817 and the 817ND are a
redesigned finals section that solves the infamous "blown finals" problem; an
extra color on the display; and the opening of the 60-meter band.

can u enable 60m on plain vanilla 817 or do u
need 817nd...

cause that plus warranty seems to me to make
ebay prices crazy as they are 100$ below new
and id pay 100$ for another band plus warranty
(im told yaesu warranties are not transferable)

60m can be enabled on the original 817 either by performing the extended
TX mod or changing software "jumpers". If you do the TX mod then the
changes are permanent (or until you get out your soldering iron and undo
the mod). Changes to software jumpers will persist until the next time
you reset the microprocessor.

Both are available at www.mods.dk.

The annoying birdie at 7240 (freq for the West Coast Swap Net) and
other birdies eliminated in the ND model

I am contemplating sending my early model 817 into Yaesu or buying a new
one to eliminate this annoying whine. Had I known of its existence, I
would have bought an 817ND outright instead of a used model. Oh well.....

According to the "Pack-it Referance" Second Addition by Hugh McCully
VE3AYR the "FT-817 serial number has the form YMLLNNNN where Y= the
last digit of the year of manufacture, M is the letter representing
the month of manufacture with "C" = January, "D" = February, and so
on. The lot number is represented by the two digits LL (00 - 99), and
NNNN (0001 - 9999) is the unit number within the lot LL. As an
example, 0L030227 means October 2000, lot 3, unit 227. The lot number
is not linked to the year and month, i.e. LL does not reset to 00
each year."
For more information on this book contact 'FT-817 book, 610 Barrons
Court, Burlington On, L7R 4E4 CANADA.'
I am in NO way connected with Hugh or this book.
