maybe you pushed it enough times and when it finally made contact it burned
off the corrosion. I think we called this type of repair "FM" or F_____

Subject: File - FT817 Group Guidelines.txt
FT817@yahoogroups.com
Send Email Send Email

The FT817 Group averages over 500 (+/-130 one-sigma) messages
per month. Because the volume of messages is rather large, I would
like to remind everyone of a few long-standing FT817 guidelines to
follow. Most of you do so already.

1. Civility. (This is practiced well by our members!)

2. Please sign your messages with name and call sign, e.g.,
     Fred - W1XYZ.

3. When replying to a posting (message), kindly delete all
unnecessary text including the trailing text. Only leave the text
from the prior message to which you are replying ... <snip> the
rest. If one desires to read the entire thread, the command [Up
Thread] at the top of the message can be used to read the entire
discussion. Remember also that a lot of members have slow
connections and some even pay connect time or characters rx/tx. This
also helps the clarity of your message.

4. When replying to a post, please decide if your comment should be
to the entire group of over 5,000 or directly to the author of the
post. When you click on "Reply," it goes to everyone. To reply
direct (simplex), you should click on the email address following the
user ID line at the top of the post. Notice that only a part is
shown for privacy. Also, please think about if what you are about to
post in reply to the group really should be to the group ... replies
like "I sure do agree with that" doesn't add much to the group. Send
thoughts like those direct to the poster please.

5. It is fine for members to post something for sale or wanted to
buy ... once per item(s). All questions and offers to buy/sell
should be made directly to the poster, not to the Group. The member
posting the FS or WTB may post that the item(s) was/were
sold/purchased.

6. Posting of commercial items for sale by manufacturers or dealers
is also fine, but should be done on an infrequent basis. The FT817
members benefit by learning of hardware, software, sales, etc. before
it appears in magazines, etc.

7. New members are all moderated until their first posting. If it
follows the guidelines, it is approved and the member is change to
unmoderated status. This list is a partially moderated list, i.e.,
only first message is moderated while later messages are monitored
after posting. If an unmoderated posting is found by the moderators
to have a problem, then the poster is contacted directly to resolve.
Actions are taken against those that chronically violate the rules.
The reason for this form of moderation is to block spammers from the
list and it has been working.

8. Do not add disclaimers to your posts that (1) restrict the ability of other
members to use the information you post, (2) claim a copyright to your post, or
(3) to claim any type of "rights" as a consequence of another member replying to
you post either directly to you or to the group.

Thanks to all es 73,
Barry - W4WB

We can't do it for you, instructions are at the bottom of every email
from the list. Do what it says, and make sure to confirm the request
when the system sends you an email asking you to do so.

Hi all, I'm selling my 80 meter through 2 meter buddipole system.
It's home made but made by an RF engineer who used his equipment at
work (multi thousand dollar tunning equipment) to tune/test it.

Please see more info and pictures at:

http://www.jenniferbond.com/buddipole.htm

This is a great portable dipole antenna system for 80 meters all the
way to 2 meters. Covers 80, 75, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, 10, 6 and 2
meters. Made with 1/2" sch40 PVC. It has over $25 in stainless
steel hardware!! I have spent over 40 hours designing and tweaking
the coils to work their very best. The center feeder has a BNC
connector on it and 1:1 RF choke to prevent RF from coming down the
feed line and give you a better radiation pattern. The extension and
75 meter coils are the longest at 21".

There are separate loading coils for each band. Designed for
horizontal use but I have also included a vertical adapter for using
this antenna as a vertical. You can adapter the center feeder easily
to a painter's pole found in most hardware stores. If you are local
to Seattle, I have a wonderful portable PVC collapsible base AND a
painters pole that I will sell for a good price. The wire on the
coils range from 22ga to 18ga. It will handle 100WPEP max.

I have had great performance with this antenna. It was designed and
built by a local RF Engineer using the plans from the Buddipole.

This antenna is the only one I have so if you are looking for are
good antenna for camping or field day this is the one for you.
Please email me if you have any questions, jennifer@...
Price is $125.00, US Postal Service Money Order or Cashiers Check
plus $10 for Priority shipping in the US. Would prefer local in
Seattle pickup if possible.

Whilst I agree with all the comments made by Fred VE7AWO/MM0FSE and they
reflect a situation that should be strived for, it is also possible to get
acceptable results with a less than ideal location and antenna.

I use an FT817 and the LDG Z11 auto atu at my home QTH and in Cyprus (5B),
which we often visit.

At both locations I use horizontal loop antennas.

I will describe my Cyprus setup.

The location is Limassol, in single storey building situated in a built-up
area.

The antenna is a loop mounted 1 metre above a flat roof and in rectangular
form within the roof perimeter.

In the middle of the loop there are all kinds of RF absorbing/shielding
metal structures. The loop is about 4.5 metres above ground level and is
about 30m in length. The location is near to sea level. My modes of
operation are normally PSK31 and CW.

I find that I can work all of Europe, Asiatic Russia, India and islands in
Indian Ocean over 6600km away. Now I know its not real DX, I know of a UK
ham who worked VK using QRP and an indoor antenna, however it satisfies me.
So the message seems to be try, try and try again. Even with difficult
situations it's sometimes surprising what can be achieved. QRP working is
fun.

I commiserate with Patrick but persistence pays.

You could always do it by clicking on "Edit My Membership" in the
upper right hand corner of this page, and then click on the box at the
bottom of the new page that says "Leave Group".
How simple is that!?

Hi, I have a slightly strange request. Does anyone have an 817 they are not
using in Venice,Florida? I have been working disaster relief with the Red Cross
after Hurricane Charley. And I had to leave mine back in Minnesota. I
volunteered to extend for Hurricane Frances. And I fear I might need something
with
longer range then my HT. Locals hams have given their all and been real heros
down here. But, they might be short handed on this next one.

I think its more down to lack of acctivity and VERY BAD band conditions.

I opperated from the med last month on holiday, with my 817 + miracle whip.

Managed a couple of 2m contacts and about a dozen 6m contacts (best 3500km),
i was pleased the the results, and knew i could have done a LOT better if
the bands had been in better shape.

I did try 20m and was AMAZED at what i could here. VK4,VK7,VK6 etc ZL1, KL7
most of europe and usa. Sigs were peaking s9+ for the VK+ZL stations,
unfortunatly they wernt interested in working QRP stations, only anybody
running a KILOWATT +! or to put it another way only signals that were
59+60db.
At least i KNOW i would have made it had they the courtousy to ask for qrp
stns to call in at frequent times.

Looking forward to my next /P /MM qrp ops.

From my calculation then a radio with this problem would have a flat
battery in approx 4 - 5 days (1000mAH battery assumed). So my battery
going flat after approx 4 weeks without use would be considered the
norm ??

I just got my ft817 a couple weeks ago and have been trying to
figure out if the tuning knob can be tightened a little bit. Mine
is VERY sensative. Just a light touch and it moves a lot. It is very
hard to get the freq. you want when is moves to freely.
Also I have an Alinco DM 330MV switching 32 amp power supply
powering my 817, yet when after a full charge the power out
indicator shows only 3 small bars not the full power indication. The
batteries are 2200 mah nimh. I have also used my external charger
made especially for these batteries and still do not get an
indication of full power out. If it does show full power out it will
change to the 3 bars very quickly. I have 3 different makes of nimh
batterise and all respond the same way. Can these radios really get
5 watts out for more than a couple minutes when powered by the
internal batteries?
I am quit new to the group so if this already has been
covered please forgive me. I did a search and found nothing
regarding tightening the tuning.
Thanks
Ken

If you peel the rubber off the mic there is a set screw hidden
underneath the rubber ring. if you loosen the set screw and slide the
knob closer to the front panel so that there is some friction it will
tighten the feel significantly. It takes a small allen wrench to adjust.

There is also a menu option to alter the tuning rate.

Hi Dave
So that’s why I have not heard you on! Four weeks without use!

Off /M this weekend, listen out on SS I'm off up north.
Next weekend /P from Altnaharra probably 40m 20m and 17m.

All the paper work with the mic mentioned is that it has no function
with the 817. The "A" button simply replaces the FST button on the
standard mic. I was hoping it may toggle a line up or down so that it
could control say an internal processor or even the BHI module.

No-other than turning mine on to check voltage every week or so, mine still
reads 10v and I have a 1600 ma pack in mine. I have not transmitted more
than a minute or so on FM on a local repeater in the last 4 weeks or longer.

From my calculation then a radio with this problem would have a flat
battery in approx 4 - 5 days (1000mAH battery assumed). So my battery
going flat after approx 4 weeks without use would be considered the
norm ??

Look at the nice new HL-100BDX 100W model being introduced by Tokyo Hy-Power
that is interfaced to auto-bandswitch with the 817:

Just like the 50B, you take your chances on importing.

But why bother for only 3 dB more gain over the 50B? It draws more current
up to 4 amps more on peaks (needs higher capacity battery-read more weight);
and it is an inch wider and 2 inches longer than the 50B (need a bigger pack
or case).

I got the 50B to give me a bit more punch when I felt like really being
heard more, but why bother with this amp when there are plenty of 100 watt
rigs out there. The LDG-Z11 and the 50B stack perfectly under the FT817 for
a perfect little package to use with a wire antenna. I get a good couple of
hours on SSB with a 7.5AH SLA battery.

This 100 watt amp would be too big for this little Z11 tuner power wise and
in physical size. The new LDG100 has a funky case that doesn't stack as
well as the Z11-but that is what you would need to handle the increased
power from this amp. Or skip the tuner and go with a resonant antenna.

On the other hand, it would be nice to have at home hooked to a supply as
sort of a docking station for those who have the FT817 as their only rig.

A similar problem exists with a lot of radios. I haven't had the knob off mine
yet but a fix I have used in the past successfully is to place a small rubber
washer between the back of the knob and the radio giving some friction and
stopping the knob from turning so easily.

Can anyone advise how to get the knob off ??

   Subject: [FT817] Tuning knob

   Thanks
   Ken
