Greetings everyone. I recently purchased a FT817, which is about 1 year old.
When I transmit on SSB (only tested on 6/2/70cm), the reported audio is very
poor. I spoke to a friend on air who reports that the radio sounds like its
transmitting through a class C amp, as the audio sounds very clipped. Ive
tried the usual adjustments, however, no change. I suspect that it has
something to do with the biasing. Everything is ok on FM. I wonder if anyone
could help with some advice?

I would appreciate suggestions for a light weight antenna for HF I
can use while on my daily walks. No need to transmit, just want to
listen. Appreciate any suggestions.

I'm new to the list and new to the 817. I just bought
a used 817 and discovered the main troublesome issue
might be the antenna.

I don't have HF privleges, but do like to listen to SW
broadcasting. I "would" like to find a single antenna
that I could use for both SWLing and some 6m
use...will the Miracle Whip tune up on 50 MHz???

I would like to be able to take one radio, one
antenna, and have some fun...I'm not expecting
unrealistic results. I'm looking for portability and
practicality...and a few 6m contacts.

Thanks,

JJ

Thanks to this group, the suggestions from members, and the FAQ I feel good
operating my FT817. I saw the CQWW CW contest on this weekend, so I thought,
Why not? With only 5 watts and an old 14AVQ vertical antenna I was able to work
20 different countries while only operating about 4 hours and had a blast. It
all started when I heard D44TD running 20 over 9. Ok, so I had to call for 30
minutes, but when I heard him answer ME the old thrill I felt years ago came
back! When operating my high power station, I wouldn't even bother answering
NP4Z, but with the new rig, everyone is a challenge, so when I worked him on the
first call again that old thrill that got me into ham radio, was BACK. This is
the real world, so no I wasn't able to work everyone I called, but perhaps that
isn't a bad thing either. Oh and high 5's to W3ZV and his qrp wallpaper. I
can't wait for the SSB test!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don is right that the ATAS-120 is one option for a small, light remotely tuned
antenna, but the Hi-Q 2.5/80 XTL (www.hiqantennas.com) or "Little Tarheel" are
other options, and are reputed to be considerably more efficient. I have a
different model Hi-Q and am extremely impressed with the design, workmanship,
and customer service.

   . . . if you want a small, compact
whip that will tune remotly while in motion while sacraficing some
performance (not usually a good idea with QRP) then the ATSA (or MP2)
   is probably the answer.

Hello everyone,

I've mostly built the simple CAT interface cable as shown...

But can anyone give me the actual pin numbers for the ACC plug?
DataIN and Data OUT don't feature on the ACC plug, according to the
manual.

Thanks - Martin

Hi all,

Just installed the bhi dsp unit into my 817, having experienced the
one inbuilt in my old 706IIG I wasnt expecting much as I found that
one like others when using too much slope stations sounding like
listening down a drain pipe. Not so in most cases on the 817 unit, it
sounds pretty good even on the highest position (4) although it does
reduce noise in position 1 I find I usually leave it in either
position 3 for 2m & 70cm FM & some weaker hf ssb sigs & position 4
for strong hf sigs.
The auto notch is good in position 3 & wipes out heterodynes
altogether in position 4. I believe its a sound investment for the
little rig & would strongly recommend it to anyone suffering QRN I
suffer on hf from local interference & this thing wipes it out
completely with the exception of my wide screen digital tv which
still gets through on intermediate freqs but not as much as without
the unit. It works pretty damn good on fm & am as well completley
quieting all background noise on low & high strength sigs.

John G0VGZ
PS I have no interests in the BHI company except being a customer I
would strongly recommend you have the unit installed by an emporium
dealing with these if you are not competent with tiny SMT components
& have damn good eye sight & a steady hand. Otherwise its not oo hard
to install

    Pin Connections

Thanks Jonathon,
By cross referencing this to the Yaesu "connection-diagram", and the
data jack pinouts in the Pak-it reference, I've come to the conclusion
that this is the "rear panel view", and the larger gap is between pins
4 and 5.

I was rather surprised to find that the switching transistor for TX
Ground is rated at 1.5A, 160V. Very robust.

TO4E & TO4WW

One of the rarest DXCC entities is presently activated, viz., Europa
Island which is the largest of the Scattered French Islands of the
Indian Ocean. See http://europa2003.free.fr/ to learn more about
this island and the DXpedition. They will be QRV until 15 December
if all goes well. If you are trying to collect DXCC contects, this
is a good one to try to work.

They are working CW, SSB, and digial modes from 6-160 m. The ops are
excellent and have great CW ears!

If anyone works them QRP with the FT-817, then please post your
accomplishment. The WW CW contest is going on until the end of the
day (UTC). Speed is 35-40 wpm if you want to play. ;-) I worked
TO4WW about 0300Z on 20 m, but used a beam and 1 KW to break the pile
up. QRP later.

To optimize your chances of working this rare one, look at the
propagation predictions on their web site (see above) or use perhaps
the W6ELProp program to customize the prediction yourself. Also,
your odds on QRP go up if you try on a weekday and later in the
DXpedition (like the last week). Please notice that these guys work
split. If you are not familiar with this feature of the FT-817, look
in the manual or pages 64-65 in the "Pack-It Reference for the FT-
817." And as always, the best advise to working DX is the simple
rule to listen, listen, listen ... then pounce once you learn the
operator's habit (takes tailenders, moves up/down the pile, works one
part of the pile and then move, etc.).

Good luck es 72/73,
Barry - W4WB

Hi all,

I'm trying to locate the complete pinouts for the ACC connector on the
FT-817. I'm looking for something like the diagram on page 86 of the
Pack-it Reference, but for the ACC connector. I have several
documents, but can't locate my actual Yaesu FT817 manual.

I have the cables, and some of the pin numbers of the signals, but
it's not clear which is the proper orientation of the pin numbers to
connector patterns, and I don't have them all. I need the proper
physical location of the 12V, CAT in, CAT out, ground, and TX GRD
signals.

Thanks and 73,

Hey.

Is the feedback a function of SSB Mic setting or does it occur at all
settings?

I've noticed that reducing the mic gain stopped the feedback. Is
that all it takes?

BTW, I'm using an external antenna, not one mounted on the FT-817...

Bil,

For what it's worth, I've not noticed a difference in the noises I hear when
listening on
40 and 80 compared to running off a battery with the switcher unplugged. I'd be
more than happy to check for others if anyone is interested.

Are you more concerned about EMI from the supply? Or noise in the power feed
itself?

Not claiming this to be anything super, but compared to the $40 MFJ charges, and
the
reports that their supply is rather noisy, it seems like a good deal and it fits
my needs
well.

Well I used to trouble shoot for compaq (before Hp bought them) I
would unseat everything (cpu, mem, fan etc.) first. I know sounds
strange but try it. Check all the contacts on them (everything). If
they look good (ie. no burnt pins) reseat the cpu and the cpu fan
and try to start it up. You should get a beep or two because you
don't have any memory in yet. then turn it off then install the
memory again and try to boot up. If everything is good it should
boot up fine. you might have to get into the BIOS and just resave it.

tuner for the higher bands - people have reported reasonable results
with a set-up like that. It has been reported that you can usually
work one "classic" band either side - like 20 & 10 with a 15 - but
since propogation is headed down - I think I would concentrate on the
lower end of the range. You might also look into Diamond or Comet
antennas - they make some "multi-band" antennas that have
multiple "resonators" attached to a common mast - but I think the 40M
performance may suffer.

- the series of beeps is an audio diagnostic provided by the BIOS...
unfortunately, such beeps are rarely documented in writing for today's
'consumer' PCs... there are different meanings (hardware failures)
ascribed to the number, speed, frequency of the beeps...

- you *should* be able to boot to the BIOS, but if you cannot, assume
the CPU is fried... you can first do a Google search on your
computer's BIOS (or search through Tom's hardware site)... you
mentioned 'eMachines,' so you should easily find the info...

Dear computer members.
I was attempting to hook up an MFJ-1275 sound card interface to the
817(group content). I turned the computer on (an old E-machines 600MHz unit)
and the cooling fan for the CPU emitted a loud continuous squeal. I know
that fan had been dying for a while but kept hoping the computer would die
first.
I took the CPU out and went into town and got a new fan which was easily
replaced.
I started to plug the CPU back in when I was called away to deal with an
urgent (to them) problem.
I returned a couple days later and said - all looks fine and turned the
computer on. Needless to say I forgot about not full having seated the CPU
(it was not touching the contacts). I got a series of beeps and nothing
happened. The computer would not switch off. I unplugged the power cord and
began looking at the area I had worked on and noticed the unplugged CPU.
I put it back in and tried to start the computer but no luck. All I get are
beeps.
Things I have tried are
1. Letting it sit for a week hoping it would somehow reset itself- no louc
2. Removing the memory battery - no luck either.
Computer starts to run whenever the power plug is replaceded and will not
shut off with the front switch.
The question is, can it be reset or do I get to buy a new computer (had my
eye on a nice laptop for field use)?
I am in the Cayman Islands and computer shop time starts at US$90 per hour
just to open the unit.

Thanks in advance for your suggenstions and time.

DATA OUT and PTT are always "live." DATA IN requires DIG or PKT modes.

They're used for the PS/2 connections on PCs. You can cut the "tail"
off of an old mouse, and then trace the connectors with an ohmmeter.
That way you won't have to solder onto tiny pins. One warning: some
mice, like simple two-button ones, may not use all pins. Three-button
or wheel mice are more likely to have all six pins wired. Or you can
find an old PS/2 patch cord and cut it in half, to get two plugs with
pigtails.

Pin 5 but you may need to be in data/pkt mode. I haven't tried it.

They're standard mini-DIN connectors so available from virtually all component
suppliers.

Wide FM doesn't have selectivity. It's like a barn door.

Thanks for the reply Barry,
I did look back through the archive, but there are so many messages
withe the words failed and finals in that I would be there for days
reading them :)

I also seem to recall someone saying that it happened twice, but I'm
wasn't sure if I read it on here or I was told it over the air. If
it's only happened twice to one rig out of all the rigs that were
sold, then that can't be bad :)

Your comments on the sales figures are interesting.
There was a large number of initial sales here in the UK, but it
wasn't until prices dropped that the radio really took off.

I waited for what seemed like a lifetime before the price dropped
enough for me to buy one. I desperately wanted an 817, but the prices
kept high.

I wasn't stating that the rate of sales was the reason, I was just
wondering if that COULD be the reason.

As someone who worked in a production environment for most of the last
20m years, I know what happens when pressure is piled on by demand for
the product. I was just wondering if the same could be true for the
Yaesu factory.

You could put the resistor in the _microphone_ side of the connector,
not the rig side. I'd want to do it this way anyhow, so the rig would
remain compatible with stock Yaesu mikes.
