Just wanted to let everyone know that I inherited an old Midlothian-founded
non-profit organization today called the Responsible Individuals for a
Greater Home Town (RIGHT) Group; it was free, and founder Arthur Nahatis
will come on board with me as an honorary member.

Attached is a short press release if any media outlet or propaganda factory
wants to use it.

The main goal is to promote, support, and elect conservative candidates to
public office, and as a subsidiary to that mission, community service would
also be stressed (that's secondardy to what the political stuff is about).

RIGHT was successful in getting Midlothian City Councilmen William
Hollabaugh and Dusty Fryer elected a few years back, and was also known for
giving out thousands of dollars in scholarships to local students (that, of
course, won't be happening until we can get RIGHT back up off the ground).

Anyway, if you'd like to join, just let me know; it's free (yay) and we'll
start having monthly meetings if the support grows...

Nahatis gave me his blessing to use the group name and logo, though I
haven't seen what the logo looks like.

So yeah, just let me know what you guys think. Like the Taxpayers Alliance
for Good Government in Waxahachie, RIGHT will attempt to get conservatives
and libertarians elected to office, and in turn, hope those guys don't turn
around and "stab us in the back," to para-quote Arthur Nahatis ;)

Our Midlothian ISD (where I'm running for school board) $80 million,
14-cent-tax-increase-if-passed bond election is set for Saturday, Feb. 7.

Aside from a citizen's group mailing postcards out telling people to vote
against it (we defeated a $99.95 million bond last year too), our paper this
week ran this huge front page story:

http://www.elliscountypress.com

I'll try to get a picture of the front page, because you just gotta see it
to believe it.

Drives the final nail into the coffin I think.

who's counting the votes, Joey?

The deal is here in NH.  :>)  Hand counted ballots, at the precinct tables, in full view, done at the town level.

click on: free_town_project@yahoogroups.com and join with those of us who are putting down roots.  We should have at least one, perhaps 2 target towns picked out by the end of this weekend.  No Zoning is the primary concern... and there are very few towns in NH like that.

We feel it is imperative to build prototypes for the rest of NH to see what a libertarian/constitutionist government will actually do, once in majority.

As far as I know, there are no deadlines involved in going to the
festival. There will be a deadline to pre-order the communal meal at
a discount, and a limited number of tickets available the day of the
meal. But no deadlines on the festival itself.

I think what I need is a specific um, calendar or whatever, of dates
...like, say deadlines to turn in my part of the money or whatever.

I totally want to go to New Hampshire, I really do. And today, I just got to
full-time, 40-hour-a-week status at the newspaper so I'm freakin' goin
nuts!!! That's about $500 every two weeks now, so I can possibly save half
that at least for the trip.

But I'll need specific dates as to when or who to get the money to...

The XTerra trip still sounds the most logical, especially if we got
three-four people heading up there. And heck, Gaby and Lauren could follow
us or whatever ...it'd be a convoy!

Gather the troops, then. You won't need to save anything other than spending
money. We'll cover
the gas to get you there, plus some money for food, plus put you up in the
trailer or cabin while in
Lancaster.

The dates the cabin will be available are from 3pm Sunday, June 20, through noon
on Sunday, June 27.
That means leaving Dallas on Friday, June 18, and driving 30 hours to get there
on Sunday.

You don't need to send the money to anyone. We'll get it to you.

Congratulations on the jump to full-time! Good job!

Gather the troops, then. You won't need to save anything other than
spending money. We'll cover
the gas to get you there, plus some money for food, plus put you up in the
trailer or cabin while in
Lancaster.

The dates the cabin will be available are from 3pm Sunday, June 20, through
noon on Sunday, June 27.
That means leaving Dallas on Friday, June 18, and driving 30 hours to get
there on Sunday.

You don't need to send the money to anyone. We'll get it to you.

Congratulations on the jump to full-time! Good job!

How about this one? I'm putting it in The Quill this month, but more exposure is always good :p ~Devera

Fellow Porcupines Desperately Seeking Alternative Forms of Education

(By Devera Morgan)

Across the country, a trend has been growing for more than a decade.  More and more parents are realizing that the public school system no longer offers what their children need.  Private schools offer an attractive choice, but most private schools are parochial.  As the number of parents seeking alternatives to public schools swells every year, parents are finding secular alternatives in short supply.

My husband Bruce and I are faced with this problem.  We made the decision to homeschool before our first child was born.  With our help, Gabriel was able to read before he was four, and could recite spelling rules I’d never learned in school.  Our goal has never been to develop an überkinder by pushing him to his limits, but rather a child who is equipped with the tools to follow his natural curiosity and to learn to the limits of his heart’s desire.

However, by the time Gabriel was five it was clear that we were not going to be able to meet his needs with our current methods.  With the birth of our second child Elizabeth and the start of our new business, Gabriel was on his own more often when learning.  Boredom was driving him away from wanting to learn, and our time with him became inconsistent.  In addition, we live in a sparsely populated area of Texas where he has no friends close by to play with on a regular basis.  We soon realized that what we were providing was not the best that we could do for him.  Fortunately, I had received an advertisement in the form of a CD-ROM in our local newspaper the year before.  It was for a private school ten miles away, with a system called Montessori.

After receiving that CD-ROM I did quite a bit of research on the Internet and I was amazed at what I found.  The Montessori system seemed to offer all of the things that the homeschooling parents wanted for their children!  Self-paced; self-motivated curriculum; an open-plan classroom where materials are out for children to choose what they want to do; and extremely small teacher-student ratios, thereby allowing teachers to focus on the students and not discipline!  Flabbergasted, I asked, “Why have I never heard of this?”

So now, after Gabriel has been in this system for a year, we reach a dilemma.  We have searched in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, and there are very few Montessori schools available; and those that we do find only offer “early childhood” programs, capable of educating children only through age six.

Where does this leave us?  Well I was hoping you would ask!

The only choice I see is to remedy this situation and take the bull by the horns.  I am currently trying to compile a list of resources and people who would either want to send their children to such a school or who would be available for teaching at, and possibly administering at, such a school.

Together, we Porcupines will give our children, through education, the means to lead fulfilling lives with liberty and freedom in their hearts and lifetimes!

We have been looking at real estate to establish the school in Coos County, N.H., around Gorham and Berlin.  To give or receive more information please contact me at Devera_Morgan@.../.

Wow, we just went to Two Rows last night for the first time. I didn't make the
connection that this
is also where we are meeting tomorrow until I was replying to this request from
Fox 4 news.

This is the reply I just sent to Rafael McDonnel at Fox 4 News:

Hello, Rafael!

Thank you for your request. We have a growing DFW group that meets every first
and third Saturday
of the month. In fact, we're meeting tomorrow at Two Rows in Dallas. This is
our "friendly"
non-business meeting, whereas the 3rd Saturday is more formal. You're welcome
to drop by. This is
from the announcement email:

The next meeting will be Feb. 7th, 3 - 7pm at Two Rows Restaurant &
Brewery
Address: 5500 Greenville Ave # 1300, Dallas, TX 75206
Phone: (214) 696-2739

Also, we have an email list that most of our folks monitor. I'll send out a
request to see if
anyone wouldn't mind getting in touch with you. We're a talkative bunch, so I
feel VERY confident
that you'll have plenty of volunteers!

I hope you don't mind that I copied my wife on this reply. She is usually more
available than I am
for answering questions, but feel free to contact either one of us.

There was a suggestion for a local game night...board games, cards,
that sort of thing. Any interest? Preference for time/place?

Regarding the road trip, if there are many people interested in
driving to the Porcupine Festival this summer, there was a suggestion
to rent an RV. Are the college students still interested in this
trip??

Ideas to help Joey with his school board bid:

donate $
put up signs
door to door campaigning
telephone campaigning
polling place campaigning
get a list of libertarian voters to contact
posting to local LP message boards/lists
letters to the editor, Midlothian paper
get voting record data from county for possible contacts
mail marketing
windshield marketing (to which there were multiple objections)
post fliers
Citizens for Sound Economy backing
LP backing
paypal donation on webpage
free Joey up to knock on doors

Questions:
What are the laws regarding where signs can be put up and fliers
posted?
Did Joey go to Midlothian schools?
What is CORE?

FSP DFW: Festival Trip: I'm still up for it; since I landed full-time status
just this past week, I'll actually have money to use :) Lauren & Gaby were
talking about a road trip of their own, and I'm not sure where they stand as
far as taking an RV. But dude, a pack of FSPers in an RV would rock socks.
That'd get some publicity I'm sure.

FSP/RLC/LP:

Campaign Needs:

$ - Money: believe it or not my campaign won't cost as much as it did last
year ('03: $1,000) because I still have about 120 yard signs left that need
to be put on stakes. My main focus this year is to get the deal on the 1,000
color brochures from my newspaper's printing biz ($160 is a HUGE discount)
again and also run newspaper ads. I'd only run ads in the Midlothian Today
paper, which is a libertarian-friendly publication (the other Midlothian
paper is owned by our archrival). Today's editor is actually a libertarian.

Stakes & Nails: $20 - $30
Brochures: $160 for 1,000
Newspaper ads: $300 (estimate)

Volunteering: I have a small army of Midlothian High School students wanting
to help again, but there will be a Candidate Forum the week before Election
Day on May 15; I'll need as many supporters there as humanly possible. Last
year there was a crowd full of Establishment and opponents. The Forum is
crucial, crucial, crucial.

Door-to-Door: I have print-outs of every single person who voted in last
year's bond election, both by ABC order (last name, first) and by
neighborhood streets; so instead of going door-to-door-to-door-to-door, I
have individual neighborhoods mapped out already (read: MAPSCO). I lost by
19 votes last year because I did this. Any vols I can get to help me do
that, or split up in groups to go door-to-door, would be great!

PayPal: I'd love to get that on my website, but am not sure how, or how much
it would cost.

Libertarian Party: Last year Ron Crickenberger sent me an e-mail after the
election apologizing for not getting help to me; I said that's okay, but if
the state LP especially wants to make some noise, they are going to have to
spotlight my campaign; I'm banking on several media publications and/or
networks to get in on this. When I win, I will be the youngest school board
trustee in the state. I'd actually think I'd have to be a member of Citizens
for a Sound Economy, but the LP and definitely the RLC would hopefully be in
it this year. In fact, the RLC was so supportive of my campaign more than
ANYBODY. Very fortunate for me, but the LP is still a factor in this race
(I'm a registered Libertarian).

Marketing: Going door-to-door is the best method possible, because I'm
actually talking to the People, or vols are spreading the message
personally. Fliers on windshields got maligned in this last bond election
because they were anonymous; we could actually do it, but with brochures or
something instead (having my name on it).

Laws: Signs can be put up 30 days before the election, though I have two out
in my front yard currently. Political signs are under a whole new category
and can be placed pretty much anywhere alongside the roadways, state or
other. Just can't block the view (my signs are small).

Resume: You can access http://www.joeydauben.com for the information and
yes, I did graduate from Midlothian High School in May of 2001. Not sure
what CORE is, but I am a now the director of the RIGHT Group, Responsible
Individuals for a Greater Home Town. Also, if you guys are planning any
publication and/or flier, please put my URL on there. That's critical this
year because of all the info on it.

If you guys wanted, you could show the people about homeschooling: also, if
there is anything on this site: http://www.joeydauben.com/EC.htm that you
could use (i.e., drug searches at local schools, etc.) then please feel free
to use them.

More parents homeschooling, superintendent says

Waxahachie feeling brunt of more private, charter schools

JOEY DAUBEN
The Ellis County Press

WAXAHACHIE - More parents are homeschooling their children or enrolling them
in area private and charter schools, the Waxahachie superintendent said last
week.

Because of the hundreds of students leaving public schools each year,
Superintendent Dr. Bobby Parker said the value of each WISD student
increases, resulting in the state government decreasing their funding.

Schools are funded based on their average daily attendance rate, and the
more students a district has, the less funding it receives from the state,
which means local property taxes increase.

Parker told a joint meeting of the city council and school board Thursday,
Jan. 29 that Waxahachie’s homeschool/private schooling of children rate is
double that of the national average.

"There are good and bad sides [to this]," he said.

"Waxahachie’s enrollment [actually] declined as a result of the private and
charter schools going up."

Waxahachie is home to dozens of private schools, and several state-funded
charter schools, he said.

However, the superintendent’s news is not surprising to one parent.

"People are just fed up," said Linda Gallegos, who has battled the district
over a series of controversial drug searches at Waxahachie Junior High,
Gallegos recently called for more parents to pull their children out of
public schools because of the increase in drug activity and the increasing
costs.

"They’re [schools] turning students into little salesmen," she said. "Kids
will ask their friends if they want to buy four sets of books, then there’s
pictures twice a year, and, it’s just getting to be [expensive]."

And because of privacy laws, school districts,

according to Parker, cannot ask where parents are

sending their children, or what type of curriculum to teach them.

"All they have to do is say we’re withdrawling, and that’s the end of it,"
he said.

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to post an update on the status of our student
organization for anyone who is interested!

We were approved for organization status at the beginning of the
semester. Since then, several of us (including gaby, austin, kevin,
and tica) have gotten together to brainstorm advertising ideas. We
came up with a design we really like (I plan to bring one to the next
meeting to show). However, the design is labor intensive because it
has several designs within it that need to be cut out. So gaby and i
organized a "cutting party" on this past sunday. We had a great
turnout, with sixteen people in total showing up for at least some
part of the process; a few people, like austin, stayed for over 8
hours helping us, and the average stay was about 3 hours. We got
about half of the 1000 total flyers cut and plan to have another,
smaller get together soon.

We plan to post these flyers on almost every apartment on campus, and
also on every board we can find at school. The flyers are designed
to get attention and we are expecting there to be a good number of
people interested in what we are doing.

We took pictures of the cutting party, and with those in hand, plan
to ask for a campus newspaper to publish a story about us soon.

Anyway, thanks for reading and we will see you next meeting!

I'll be in Austin on Saturday for the LP Executive Committee meeting to
