Important
message – from the Force NHW Manager
My name is Mark
Rendall and I am the Forces Neighbourhood Watch Manager. I am writing to let
you know that Sussex Police has a new Community Messaging system that is
currently being rolled out across Sussex and as such, the current
Community Contact email message sent out by Lucy Paffett will no longer be sent
out.
The data base we
currently have was going to be transferred onto the new Community Message
system but unfortunately, over half of the listings had no postcode or name
details which are required for the new system. As a result we will be emailing
everyone nearer the expected rollout at the end of November, via the old
community contact system, inviting them to go onto the Sussex Police website
and register their continued interest in a Community Message with their correct
details.
Sussex Police always
strive to improve its service and with this in mind the District Commanders for
Rother, Wealden and Hastings will be assigning their Neighbourhood Policing
Teams to send out the more focused Neighbourhood Watch messages to their
individual wards and assign someone in each District to send out a more general
Community Message to their District.
Should you require
the more detailed crime information please do not hesitate to contact your
local Neighbourhood Policing Team who can be found on the Sussex Police Website
by entering your postcode or call up on the 0845 number. They will be pleased
to put you in contact with your nearest Neighbourhood Watch coordinator or
assist you in starting your own scheme.
To contact Sussex
Police call 0845 60 70 999 or go to www.sussex.police.uk
or in an emergency call 999
Thank you for your
patience in this time of transition.

The event, run by Wealden Police, the Safer Wealden Partnership and Forest Row Parish Council will take place between 3 pm and 7pm at the Community Centre, Hartfield Road, Forest Row, will include displays and demonstrations of the latest crime prevention products.

Road Rage
Police are appealing for witnesses and information following a 'road rage' incident in Hailsham last night (Thursday August 5th, 2009), during which a 58 year old man was stabbed.
The attack happened at about 10.15pm when the victim, who is from Eastbourne, was travelling along the A265 towards Heathfield. As he entered the High Street he noticed a car behind him which followed him for about 10 to 15 miles. The driver was flashing his headlights, tailgating, and turning his headlights on full beam for long periods at a time.
As the victim approached the Hellingly turn off on the A267 which goes to Horsebridge he pulled his Honda over to one side and stopped; the other vehicle, a red Vauxhall, did the same. Both drivers got out of their cars and a verbal altercation took place.
The Vauxhall driver - who is described as white, approximately 6ft tall, about 20 years of age, with blonde hair which was gelled up, and wearing a dark jacket, jeans and trainers then stabbed the victim. A second man also got out of the Vauxhall, and a third stayed inside. There are no descriptions of either of them at this time. The vehicle registration is believed to be S**08 and there was a Heart FM sticker in the back.
The victim was taken to hospital suffering injuries and was released today after treatment. Detective Inspector Neil Ralph, from Wealden District CID, said: "This was a nasty attack which could have been far more serious.'
"We are keen to catch the person responsible as soon as possible. If anyone witnessed what happened, or saw the vehicles being driven before the incident, then we would urge them to contact police on 0845 60 70 999, quoting serial 2099 of August 6th."

Mobile phone directory
I do not normally include items such as this but thought I could make an exception. I was emailed by a CC member who stated that there is a new mobile phone directory compiled by the 118800 service whereby your mobile number can be obtained, much like your landline number in a telephone directory. However for the mobile phone directory there is a charge of £1.00 per number requested. You can elect to have your mobile number excluded. Please see this BBC web link to the story which broke in the media on June 9th 2009:

Phishing scam warning from Trading Standards:
Please be aware that the 'phishing' scams are getting more sophisticated. The latest scam reads as:
‘Important Information In order to make your online experience even more secure we have introduced a new security feature that allows us to detect unusual activity on your online account. If we detect unusual activity, we will call you to make sure that it's really you.
As a result, we need you to visit our online service site by following the reference given below and provide your urgent phone number where you can be reached anytime during the day.
(website link removed)
How does it work?
If we detect a sign in with your user name from another country we may decide to confirm that it's really you. You must provide your urgent phone number within 2 weeks from receiving this email otherwise you will not be able to use the online service until we contact you and complete additional security checks. This can be avoided simply by following our online service link above.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this action.’
What is phishing? Phishing is the name given to the practice of sending emails at random purporting to come from a genuine company operating on the Internet, in an attempt to trick customers of that company into disclosing information at a bogus website operated by fraudsters. These emails usually claim that it is necessary to "update" or "verify" your customer account information and they urge people to click on a link from the email which takes them to the bogus website. Any information entered on the bogus website will be captured by the criminals for their own fraudulent purposes.
How can I prevent myself being a victim of phishing? The key thing is to be suspicious of all unsolicited or unexpected emails you receive, even if they appear to originate from a trusted source. Although your bank may contact you by email, they will never ask you to reconfirm your login or security password information by clicking on a link in an email and visiting a web site. Stop to think about how your bank normally communicates with you and never disclose your password in full or personal information.
Please quote the relevant serial number and date if you are responding to a reported crime, if not, ask to report a crime and request the serial number.

Scams
This scam is quite interesting in that it has an added element which is different to those which I have seen before. It states that a jail term will result if the recipient doesn’t respond within a certain. My question is why does an FBI official have a ‘gmail’ email account and not an FBI one? This is most definitely a scam and should be deleted.
‘Subject: OFFICIAL WARNING
ATTENTION: Fund Beneficiary.
OFFICIAL WARNING FROM THE FBI FOREIGN REMITTANCE/TELEGRAPHIC DEPT.:
It has been discovered that your contract/inheritance/winning FUND was transferred to an unknown account under your name. This attempt was perpetrated by someone who claims to be working for you, and that you have given him due authority to have the FUND moved to the account.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) waded in after being alerted by the supposed bank. We investigated and found that there is a possible money laundering activity in play. The FUND (US$12,000,000.00) was found to be deposited in a bank in your name pending your consent to have it transferred. It was further revealed that initial FUND transfer originated
from Nigeria to England and now here in Bank of America in USA. These transfers did not follow due process in line with the international FUND transfer rules and regulation.
Consequently, we suspect this be a terrorism funding, drug related fund deposit and/or money laundering. As stated above, the FUND has your name on it; and you must have it cleared of any connection with any of these illegal activities. Be informed that FAILURE to have this cleared out will attract a JAIL TERM. We will not hesitate to visit the full weight of the law upon you if you do not clear this fund. There is every indication that you are involved in this shady deal.
Finally, you are expected to have the CLEARANCE DOCUMENT obtain from where the FUND originated from to have you and your fund cleared. Only then shall we release your FUND as clean money devoid of any illegality, and you will be free of any involvement. To this end, you are to contact Mr. Spencer Lulu of the Anti Graft Department of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (E.F.C.C.) Nigeria and have the DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY SEAL of TRANSFER (DIST) CLEARANCE DOCUMENT obtained. Contact him through this direct email address: …@gmail.com Note that you have 72hrs to obtain this crucial Documentation. This has to be cleared! You are warned!’
Australian Tax Rebate
A member of Community Contact has emailed in stating that they have received an email claiming to be from the Australian Tax Officer saying that the recipient is eligible for a rebate. There is a ‘click here’ button which takes the recipient to a tax rebate form where all their personal details including credit card, are needed in order for the rebate to be paid back to them. Dodgy tradesperson
Last week a female in Hooe had her driveway covered in tarmac by insistent tradesmen. Three males called at her home, unannounced, stating that they were there to shingle her driveway. The female explained that she had not requested this service however the three men carried on regardless and covered the driveway against the lady’s express refusal. The three men then demanded payment for the work. They managed to get a cheque for £950 from the lady who was quite distressed by this time. After the men had left, the lady went to her neighbour and Police and Trading Standards were notified.
The male who called initially was described as approximately 5ft 9 tall, slim build, short dark hair, smartly dressed wearing a navy coloured shirt, trousers and shoes. The other men wore hi-vis jackets. They were in a blue or yellow pick up truck.
This kind of practice though rare, does occasionally happen. If you find that someone is pressurising you into accepting work to be done at your property, even though you have not given permission, contact Police immediately. If you have been pressurised into parting with a cheque, contact your bank and get the payment stopped to protect the cheque from being cashed.
National Tackling Drugs Week
Sussex Police is backing National Tackling Drugs Week, (8-12 June), with a programme of enforcement activity across the Force area designed to keep up the pressure on those who supply illicit drugs in Sussex.
The week comes at a time when Sussex Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit is continuing to score some major successes against Sussex-based drug dealers.
Recent Home Office figures revealed that there were more drugs seizures in Sussex in 2008, relative to the size of the county’s population, than in any other police force area apart from London and South Wales.
As well as the enforcement action against drug dealers taking place across Sussex during the week, Road Policing officers will be undertaking additional road checks to test motorists for driving under the influence of drink or drugs. The officers will be aided by the use of an ‘ion track’ drugs-testing machine and a specialist drugs dog.
Sussex Police is also liaising closely with local Drug Action Teams across Sussex to work together to prevent the harm caused by illicit drugs and the criminality associated with it.
Posters and flyers are being circulated across Sussex explaining what the public can do to help.
‘Rat on a Rat’ is the Crimestoppers appeal: ‘Drug dealers ruin lives – tell Crimestoppers who they are. Call 0800 555 111 anonymously.’
Another poster, ‘Drugs destroy neighbourhoods’, is designed to help people identify the telltale signs of drugs activity in their neighbourhoods.
Assistant Chief Constable Nick Wilkinson said: “The people we are targeting are those who make money out of the misery being inflicted on families and communities by illegal drugs. Campaigns such as this enable us to engage with the public, focus our efforts and send out a clear message to drug dealers that we are coming after them.
“That said, although we’re giving our full support to National Tackling Drugs Week, this is very much a year-round activity for Sussex Police. The recent Home Office figures reflect Sussex Police's ongoing dedication to combating this kind of crime both around enforcement and intervention emphasising very much our commitment to Serving Sussex.
"Over the past two years we have dismantled a number of organised crime groups and seized significant quantities of drugs, with successes achieved at both local and Force level. For example huge progress has been made in Brighton & Hove with the implementation of Operation Reduction, which targets suppliers and also facilitates treatment for drug users. At a Force level, the Sussex Police Authority has provided significant funds to increase our capacity to target serious and organised crime.”
Just some of the activities for National Tackling Drugs Week across Sussex include:
The launch of the ‘RU OK?’ (an under 19’s Substance Misuse Service) youth projects’ arts project in Brighton & Hove. The arts project will be taken around all sixteen state secondary schools, with an interactive stand offering advice and information. Other activities in the city include various enforcement activities, an information stand at Churchill Square and an open afternoon at the CRI harm reduction service.
A wide range of initiatives across East Sussex include drug enforcement activity (including raids), an Open Day at the Hastings & Rother Community Substance Misuse Service and a service user photography exhibition in Eastbourne.
Activity in the North Downs area includes planned drugs warrants in Crawley, ‘Drugs Destroy’ leaflets being inserted inside every copy of the Mid Sussex Times and an information stand at the Carfax in Horsham on June 11th .
In Adur the mother of a drug user has given a candid interview to Adur Outlook which highlights the negative impact of drug use on families and local communities. An awareness road show to launch the week takes place at the Holmbush Centre in Shoreham on June 8th, and moves to Lancing (outside the police station) the next day.
In advance of the week in Worthing, Sussex Police officers and the Soloman Theatre Company joined forces to educate students at Davisons Girls School. The company performed 'Gemma's Wardrobe' to a key stage three group at the school on June 4th. The performance depicted a girl who is befriended by an older male who encourages her to take drugs and was followed by workshops to discuss the performance and the messages contained within it.
Other activities taking place in Worthing include the use of a passive drugs dog at various street locations within the town centre, the use of an ‘ion track’ drugs testing machine within targeted licensed premises and the trial of a new piece of equipment capable of detecting cocaine on a person's face.
Across Arun a number of drugs warrants are planned, as well as proactive ‘Rat on a Rat’ activity and outreach work.
There will also be ongoing enforcement activity at Gatwick Airport.

Scams
I have received several emails from scheme members stating that they have received in their inboxes variants of phishing scams. The common element with them all is that they are from people from overseas who need assistance to claim money from a will. Oddly the deceased is someone not connected to the email recipient and even stranger the emailer will generously cut the recipient into the spoils of the millions of pounds on offer once the obstacles are overcome and paid for, by the recipient of course.
These are all variants of phishing scams. A phishing scam is where an unscrupulous person makes contact via email, lures with a tale of woe intending that the recipient feels sorry for them and then the temptation of a large reward for assistance whereby the recipient is then meant to bite. Phishing scams are designed to tempt and draw people in and eventually obtain bank and other personal details and then the recipient will end up paying fees to release the money. Of course there never was any money to start with and the recipient is the one left out of pocket and the scammer is rubbing their hands together full of cash belonging to other people.
If you, a family member or someone you know is a victim of fraud, in any guise, call Police immediately on 0845 6070999.

The Police Property Act Fund
Wealden Police Community Support Officer Katie Breeds had the pleasure of handing over a cheque for £500 to the New Parklands Residents Association, following a successful application to the Police Property Act Fund. The money is to be put towards the installation of a new play area in the Parklands area of Maresfield. The fund is maintained by the sale of property which comes into the possession of Sussex Police, where an owner cannot be identified, and is used to support good causes within the local community.
Chairman of the association, Craig Black said "The NPRA would like to thank the Police for their generous donation of £500. The money will be spent on improving play provision in the Parklands Community Play Area by the purchasing and installation of early years play equipment and landscaping of other areas. The result will be a more inclusive and accessible play area that will benefit the whole of Maresfield."
PCSO Breeds said, "It is a pleasure for me to hand over this money as I know the NPRA are currently working hard to obtain funding for the new play equipment they are looking to purchase."

Sometime between 12:00pm and 6:00pm on Thursday 7th May, a ride on mower was stolen from a barn in Fowley Lane, High Hurstwood. The value of the mower was approximately £1000.
If anyone has any information about this incident they are asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 502 of 08/05/09 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Bogus Calling Warning
Over the past Sussex Police have had 13 calls in relation to a man who has been described as using befriending behaviour to gain entry into the properties of elderly and vulnerable people.
These incidents have occurred between 28th April to 7th May in Barcombe, Bexhill, St Leonards, Lewes and Seaford, all in East Sussex, but it is quite possible that he may have called elsewhere in Sussex or further a field in the south east.
The man has been described as being in his mid forties to mid fifties and of stocky build. He has also been described as unshaven or with a moustache.
To date, there is no suggestion that anything has been stolen but, whilst wanting to reassure local people that these incidents are rare, Sussex Police are concerned about the way this man is repeatedly managing to win the trust of some residents. On some occasions he claims to have previously left a business card at the address or that he knows the householder concerned before engaging them in conversation. Once in the house he identifies goods that he is interested in purchasing and actually offers money for them before leaving and saying that somebody will come back to collect the items.
Sussex Police remind residents to be extremely cautious about allowing entry of any strangers into their homes, for any reason, but especially if they are not expected. Stop and think! When you hear a knock at the door ask yourself whether you are expecting any visitors? Always ask for identification from any callers indicating an interest in buying any of your property. Make a note of the description of callers and any vehicles that may be outside at the time and never feel pressured into selling any of your property to anybody.
If you are not thinking of selling property prior to a knock at the door, why let somebody into your house if you do not know who they are? If you are at all concerned call Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 or via 999.
Although the weather is getting warmer, local residents are advised to please ensure that doors and windows are closed when they are not in the immediate vicinity to prevent the cowards that prey on our neighbours from being able to take advantage.
Residents with elderly neighbours are also asked to keep an eye on them over the summer months and help ensure that they are not targeted.
Anybody with information in relation to this series of incidents, either by having had a call themselves or who may have witnessed a similarly described male in similar circumstances are asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial number 1550 of 7th May 2009.
If the man described is you then you are also asked to contact Sussex Police as above so that we can discuss the matter and eliminate you from the enquiry.
Thefts from Outbuildings - Wealden Police advise the public to be vigilant
Wealden District is currently suffering a small, but significant, increase in reported thefts from garages, sheds and outbuildings. This increase is not isolated to any one particular area within the district, and items targeted for theft include garden equipment, such as petrol powered tools and mowers, off road motorcycles and quad bikes, saddles and other horse riding equipment. As the better weather approaches, such items are often stolen for selling on at boot fairs and markets.
Wealden Police are advising members of the public to be vigilant, and report any suspicious activity. It must be stressed that the Wealden District is a very safe place to live, with a low crime rate, but a few simple steps can drastically reduce the chances of becoming a victim.
Ensure that all property is marked so that it can be identified easily. Lock motorcycles and quad bikes with a good quality chain, and consider fitting a shed alarm. A baby monitor secreted in a shed with a mains supply will alert a householder of any activity.
Sussex Police offer a tack marking service, where saddles and other items of tack can be marked with a unique number, making identification far easier. A warning sign is also provided, thereby deterring theft. If anyone would like to take advantage of this service, they should contact their local Police Community Support Officer, the details of which can be found on the Sussex Police website.
Theft of heating oil is also a problem on Wealden. The oil tanks are often hidden from view, which in itself, makes them vulnerable. Tank owners are advised to consider additional security lighting. Owners might want to consider building a garden 'shed' over the tank. The shed can then be equipped with an alarm, thereby alerting the owner to any unauthorised access to the tank.
Two simple steps that can help greatly are marking your property and maintaining a record of your property. This makes the job of re-uniting it with its owner much more simple if it is stolen and recovered. The Home Office has recently introduced a new website, where members of the public can create their own secure portfolio of their property online. Police forces throughout the country will have access to the data, thereby making repatriating property a simple task. The website is www.immobilise.com or speak to your local PCSO about marking your property.
Wealden District Inspector Richard Allum said, "We shouldn't lose sight of the fact that the Wealden District is a really safe district in which to live, visit or work. My team are working hard to ensure that the area becomes even safer, and a few simple steps taken by members of the public can go a long way to achieving this. www.immobilise.com is an extremely useful tool for us and I would encourage members of the public to register with the site."
If anyone has any information about the people responsible for these crimes please contact the local police station or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
