I don't remember what MrSID normally did. I don't see any icons for save or
print, but a right click of the mouse shows the functions are there and
useable.

Subject: [FHCNET] ancestry MrSID plugin

Does anyone know what happened with the MrSID plug-in on ancestry.com for
the 1900 census, etc images? For the past few days, whenever I try to view
an image with that plug-in, I cannot get the extra options for viewing.
I've had the plug-in for years and have tried doing both the "already have
the plug-in....." and installing it again if didn't. All I get is a zoom
in/out and a move option that doesn't give much flexibility for viewing.
Also, can't seem to save or print the images with any success.

If no one else is having problems, maybe I just need to uninstall it and
reinstall. Have not checked at the FHC if it's the same or not, this is on
my home computer. Will see if it's the same when I can get into the FHC
again.

Thanks, Patty

The agreement between the Church and Ancestry is that only official family
history centers (those that have gone through the approval process) may have
access to Ancestry.com. A list of these centers has been provided to Ancestry
by
FHCSupport. Locations that contact Ancestry that are not on the list of
official
centers will not get a free account. If you do not know whether your center is

We had a computer with CAV installed that was acting
slow. I deleted CAV and installed a copy of NOD32. It
found and removed a "trojan" virus.
I will probably put CAV back on it, but I just thought
I would pass this on for what it's worth.

Some "trojans" are closer to spyware and some A-V programs may ignore them on
purpose. What was the name that NOD reported?

I had quite a few people ask me for a copy of the scavenger hunt we had
done so I uploaded it to the fhcnet pages. It was for our meeting we had
around Veteran's Day, so the questions focused on that.

Hope it is helpful to people.

Russell,

Yes, I do see that the save and print options are available under right
click. But, to move around on the image doesn't seem to work as well as in
the past when you could click on the hand at the top of the screen. I've
written to ancestry and am waiting for a response back from them.

Thanks,

When our FHC was approved about 16 months ago, I asked why our unit #
started with a 4 instead of a 3. They told me that was because we were a
"computer only" FHC. However, that did not stop them from sending us a
modem, the IM software, and a film reader. We then started ordering films as
aggressively as we could to qualify for the 20/20/20 minimum required for a
digital imaging system.

I never did understand why they considered us to be a "computer only" FHC.

Here is a stupid question. Are some "computer only" FHCs considered
"unofficial" because they don't have a unit #, and they don't have a
"branch" certificate hanging on the wall?

I have seen such unofficial "FHCs" in my stake. When I first stumbled onto
an unhallowed computer in a clerk's office, I asked what is was for. They
told me they used it in their Family History Sunday School classes. As the
stake computer guy, I had to ask if I was expected to maintain this beast.

No? Then why was a "donated" computer, which was not church property,
sitting in a clerk's office? That's sort of like those computers you
sometimes see in meetinghouse libraries. They don't officially exist, so
they do not show up on the computer inventory, and the stake computer guy is
not obliged to maintain them. On the other hand, since they were "donated"
they can't be considered personal property either. Personal property must be
removed from church buildings at night.

Does the replacement for Mr. SID work with Firefox? If so, then the FHCs
can quit using the Internet Explorer and use Firefox which is faster and

And either not have a reader/printer yet, or the existing one needs to be
old enough or in poor repair. Even if you qualify under 20/20/20, you are
apparently out of luck if you were "blessed" to be one of the last to get
the conventional reader/printer.

Dana,

In a perfect world everyone would have a computer and a high speed
connection to the internet, along with a PDA and a cell phone. In the real
world, they don't. Not yet, anyway.

We set up a "bootleg" computer and printer in the clerks office two or three
years ago and we maintain it. We don't have a stake computer guy, so we've
always had to keep the clerk's computers running too.

There are three ward clerks (one from each ward) in our clerk's office. Only
with the installation of Open Office on the new Dells does the clerk now
have the availability of a word processor and a spreadsheet at church.

We set up the old donated pentium with a spreadsheet and a word processor on
it for anyone who wanted to use it. It's used to make agendas for baptisms
and other meetings, Sunday bulletins, prepare reports, write letters, etc.
Each ward had it's on folder on it for their own documents.

Perhaps with the new software now available on the new computers the need
for the old pentium will go away, but it has sure been filling a real need
for a lot of folks up until now.

>>> and use Firefox which is faster <<<

My experience is that while it's faster to load a page, it's far slower to start
up or even "switch to" when switching between programs.

At best it's "sort of" faster.

I should also mention that if any of you have installed Sun's Java to be able to
use OpenOffice (The d530 may have come with it), you should get an upgrade. The
older versions had a flaw that could be exploited, even if you were running
Firefox. Even if you were running Linux!

Story: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1009_22-5464872.html

Quite frankly I found Sun's upgrade painful. Not only was it a pain to find,
but it didn't seem to upgrade, but install the new version right alongside of
the old one. Ugh. Sorry, Microsoft's "Windows Update" got it right. Sun's
upgrade is nasty.

The two options available on the Family History Application form - if we
want to nitpick - are for either
     * computer-only family history center
     * family history center with film circulation (which, of course, also
has a computer)
As far as I know, those are the only two choices, and I was also under the
impression that, if the FHC is approved by the Family History department
and installed by the church, they're automatically official.

Question - Was the FHC open for patrons at the time? If so, how do you
prevent such an occurance from happening? Even if the door is kept locked,
you would have to admit a "new" patron. Evidently this individual seemed to
pose no threat when she first entered.
How about having one of those small video cameras that hooks into the
computer (I have one for talking to my kids online). We have a computer at
the staff desk where it could be placed atop the machine and pointed at the
entrance door to the FHC room, and there's lots of hard drive space. The
file could be deleted at the end of the day if there were no "events" that
needed to be saved.

I am not sure what good locking the doors would have done in this instance.
If you let harmless-looking people inside to do their family history, what
would have stopped you from letting in this woman? I bet even if the doors were
locked, she looked harmless and you would have let her in and she would have
robbed you anyway.

On the other hand, locked doors can help keep out nonharmless-looking strays
who are just out there testing doors.

"People who volunteer or work in offices and other places that are

I think the idea of a video camera is an idea worth looking at. The cost of
such equipment has come down in price and is no longer the expensive
time-lapse VCRs. It's possible that as a result of this we'll see the FM
group putting some in. It would have to be balanced against the patron's
comfort level of being videoed. The fact you put such a camera into such a
small organization suggests that a "problem" is likely. That's not going to
sit well.

From Rick Klemetson:

Opt Out!!!

Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to
track Yahoo Group users around the net and see what you're doing
and where you are going similar to cookies. Yahoo is recording every
website and every group you visit.

Take a look at their updated privacy statement:
http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy
http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy

About half-way down the page, in the section on ookies, you will see
a link that says web beacons. Click on the phrase web beacons. That
will bring you to a paragraph entitled "Outside the Yahoo Network."

In this section you'll see a little "click here to opt out" link that
will let you opt-out of their new method of snooping.

http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/beacons/details.html

Once you have clicked that link, you are exempted.

Notice the "Success" message on the top of the next page. Be careful
because on that page there is a "Cancel Opt-out" button that, if
clicked, will *undo* the opt-out.

From Russell Houghton:

I don't understand what the concern is. For one, I don't think this
is anything new. Second, it really doesn't disclose much.

I'd suggest: http://www.allaboutcookies.org/web-beacons/ and
http://www.allaboutcookies.org/email/

If you hold a strong position on privacy, then you should find out
about how to configure your browser. IE6 comes with tools to manage
cookies and Outlook 2003 will not automatically load images defeating
some information when used in emails.

I don't worry about Yahoo as much as some of the smaller guys who may
or may not disclose the information.

The biggest downside to Yahoo is to make sure you've oped out of their
marketing. Go to http://subscribe.yahoo.com/showaccount and make sure
that everything is unchecked. By default it will be checked. This
will reduce the amount of spam that ends up in your inbox.

Russell Houlton posted these comments to FHCTECH about the importance of
opting out at the http://subscribe.yahoo.com/showaccount page.

Even though I posted the original email, I agree with Russell that the above
mentioned page is more critical.
