There's still space available in the hand-drumming workshop for beginning and intermediate players on Saturday, November 21, from 2:00 - 5:00 PM at the Carbondale Community School on Dolores Way.  Experience the vibrancy of African-inspired rhythms and the joy of playing in synch with others as we will touch on the three fundamental djembe strokes, and focus on rhythmic sensibility, fluidity exercises, and an African-inspired multi-part rhythm.
Workshop fee is $30.  Drum rental ($5) will be available for those who don't yet have their own djembe or ashiko, and MUST be reserved in advance.  Drums are also available for sale at any time, by appointment only.  The workshop fee, which is $15 less than usual, is a special offer tied to the "Go Green, Get Green" Carbondale Economic Stimulus program.  All workshop participants will be entered in a drawing to win fabulous prizes including an electric car, cargo bicycle, energy audit and installed attic insulation, automotive eco-oil and filter change and year-round tires, and more.

To register, please call Laurie at 970-963-2798.

Hello everyone --

ShimmyCon in Manitou Springs is less than a week away (24th
and 25th), and the preregistration deadlines are coming up! Mail
registrations must be postmarked Monday the 19th, and online
registrations by paypal must be received by Wednesday the 21st. If you can't
attend the workshops, consider attending the show Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
featuring the workshop instructors. see the website for details:
www.shimmycon.com .

We have had several questions about Shimmycon, the workshops, and
registration, and wanted to take this chance to answer some of them.
We recognize that with so many workshops and packages, it gets
confusing. We have updated the registration forms (both printed and
Paypal) on the website, http://www.shimmycon.com , in an attempt to
clarify things a bit. We also thought we'd take the time to answer
some of the most common questions that are coming up here.

Question: Can we combine multiple packages to take different workshops?
Answer: Yes, no problem! For example, if you wanted to take the
Saturday afternoon workshops and the Sunday morning workshops, you
would register for a Session II package for Saturday and a Session I
package for Sunday, total $80 prepaid.

Question: What if we want to take the morning workshops (or afternoon
workshops) both days? Can we buy multiple Session I or Session II
packages?
Answer: Yes, you can! The original registration form was not as
clear on that as it should have been and we are sorry. That's one of
the things we tried to fix. To take all the morning workshops (or all
the afternoon workshops), you would sign up for two Session I (or
Session II) packages, one for each day, for a total of $80 prepaid.
On the paper form, just circle both days.

Question: At what level are the workshops going to be taught?
Answer: We have encouraged the workshop instructors to make
their workshops as multi-level as possible, starting with basic forms
for beginners and adding complexity as you go for more advanced
students. That being said, of course, some topics may be more
accessible to beginners than others; please see the workshop
descriptions on the website (http://www.shimmyco n.com ). If you have
any questions about the level of a workshop, please contact one of the
sponsors, either Badia (badia@badiabdancer. com) or me, Neisa
(neisa@neisasalima. com), and we will try to answer your question
ourselves if we know, or contact the instructor to find out.

Question: Is there a children's price for the show?
Answer: Yes, we have added a child's ticket price, $7 in advance
($8 at the door) for children 12 and under, available on the updated
forms on the website. If you have already purchased a will-call
ticket at full price for a child, we will give you a refund for the
extra at the door.

Question: "ShimmyCon?" What kind of a name is that?
Answer: When Badia and I are not dancing, we also happen to be
gamers. Yes, we have our geeky sides. :) In geekdom (and other
places), when people of similar interests come together for a big
event, it is often called a Con -- short for "convention. " This
usually becomes a part of the event's name, such as ComiCon or
DragonCon. When Badia first brought up with the idea for ShimmyCon,
we spent a while trying to come up with a good name, and got nowhere
until another fellow gamer jokingly suggested "ShimmyCon," and it
stuck.

We hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, please let us
know. See you at ShimmyCon!

Subject: Shimmy for the Cure Update
phoenix_dancing@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi Everyone - Selayma and Phoenix here.  We are checking in with some news and follow up on 2009 Shimmy for the Cure.

First of all - we would like to thank all of you for the support in 2009.  Shimmy for the Cure donated $1000 to Network of Strength after all expenses were covered.  So far, this is the biggest year yet.  We are also working towards moving Shimmy for the Cure to additional states starting in 2010!  How exciting!  It could not have happened without the support so thank you!!!

Ben with OzOgraphy Studios has posted the photos from the Saturday show on his site.

 http://ozography.com/photography/belly_dancing/belly_dancing.html
Click on Shimmy 4 the Cure.

If you are interested in any photos - he is selling them for $20 each and 50% will go to Shimmy 2009.

With the idea of taking this Shimmy for the Cure 'on the road', we investigated if there would be any issues with the name.  The name 'for the Cure' is actually reserved for Susan Korman so we have felt it would be best to avoid any confusion with the name.  We have brainstormed for the past 2 months and come up with a name we feel will set us apart from any other national foundation.

As of now -- Shimmy for the Cure will be "Shimmy 2B Cancer Free".  Yes it rhymes too!  So do not be surprised as we transition websites, emails and more over to our new identity....it is still us!

Also – start watching for Shimmy 2B Cancer Free in California.  This will most likely be in January 2010.  We are growing and want to thank you all for the support!!

So we hope you have all had a wonderful summer!   We are working on finalizing our January preShimmy fundraiser with a show at the Dnote on Jan 23rd.   Instructors and classes to be announced soon.  Reserve you dates for the Shimmy 2B Cancer Free with Princess Farhana June 10th-13th of 2010.

See you soon!
