Documents, Manuscripts, Maps, & Photographs

Manuscript Group 800, De Zeng Family (Geneva, NY)

Papers, 1729-1925, 1.75 linear feet / 4 boxes

Call Number: MG 800

Summary:

Correspondence, diaries, financial documents, land surveys, genealogical
notes, poetry, and photographs pertaining to the de Zeng family of
Geneva, New York, as well as allied families - Betterton, de Lancey,
ENDICOTT, Lawrence, Oehlschlagel, Rees, Reynolds, and Seward. The de
Zeng family was founded by Baron Frederick A. de Zeng (1756-1838), a
Hessian officer in the Revolutionary War who became a U. S. citizen,
glass manufacturer, and canal executive. His son, William Steuben de
Zeng (1793-1844), was co-owner with Joseph Fellows of a cotton factory
in Geneva, and in 1825 had a role in both the founding of Geneva (now
Hobart) College and in the effort to secure legislative authorization
for construction of the Cayuga and Seneca Canal. Of special interest
are: (1) an unidentified physician's notebook, 1729-1734, with medicinal
recipes, probably once the possession of Dr. Edward Cutbush; (2) an
historical list of masonic lodges until 1735; (3) a diary kept by James
Reynolds during a 1772 sea voyage from Philadelphia to England and back
aboard the Ship Mary and Elizabeth, James Sparks, captain, containing a
reference to John Woolman, a passenger aboard the ship; (4) a manuscript
copy of an account of scalpings by Seneca Indians during the
Revolutionary War; (5) drawings by Edward Cutbush, 1787, and by his
father, a shipyard carver; (6) field books of Seth Pease and a Mr.
Stoddard's 1799 survey of the 5,000,000 acre tract west of the Genesee
River for the assignees of Robert Morris (1734-1806); and (7) a log kept
May 22 - October 10, 1836 aboard the Ship Eunomus by its captain, GEORGE
W. ENDICOTT, on a voyage from Boston to Rio de Janeiro. Included is
correspondence of Aaron Burr (1756-1836), Edward F. de Lancey, Robert
Morris (1734-1806), Thomas Morris, James Rees, James Reynolds, Henry R.
Schoolcraft, Charles A. Seward, Clarence Seward, and William A. Seward.

Gift of Caroline F. Clark and Reginald E. Francklyn, 1973.

-------

Scope and Content Note:

The De Zeng Family collection pertains to Baron Frederick Augustus De
Zeng (1756-1838), who came to America from Dresden and settled in
Geneva, New York, and to many of his children’s families, most of whom
continued to live in Geneva. The offspring of the Baron and his wife,
Mary Lawrence, and in particular their son, William Steuben De Zeng
(1793-1844) and his wife, Caroline Cutbush Rees, represent the main
sources of the related families. The families included in the
collection are: Betterton, Cutbush, De Lancey, ENDICOTT, Lawrence,
Oehlschlagel, Rees, Reynolds, and the Seward family.

The collection dates from 1770-1925; the bulk dates span about a
century, from 1770-1870. The papers are organized by prominent family
members and are further subdivided by family genealogy and by various
document types. The papers of each family member are arranged in
roughly chronological order. Types of documents include: personal and
business correspondence, genealogical and biographical papers including
narrative histories and family charts, physician’s notebook, diaries,
family photographs, financial documents, legal papers, land surveys,
field books, ship’s log book, manuscripts, published essays, English
transcripts of German documents, hand-drawn maps, drawings, poetry, and
newspaper clippings including obituaries.

The collection not only documents the affairs of this extended family,
but provides information on the history of upstate New York at a time
when this region was still considered part of the "Old West." Materials
related to the development of Geneva include field notes surveying the
5,000,000 acre tract west of the Genesee River (1799); the development
of Hobart and Geneva College; the manufacture of glass, cotton and other
early industries; early efforts to contain the lakes with canals; and
correspondence reflecting the social customs from some of its most
prominent citizens.

Of special interest are: an unidentified physician’s notebook,
1729-1734, with medicinal recipes, probably once the possession of Dr.
Edward Cutbush; an historical list of masonic lodges until 1735; a diary
kept by James Reynolds during a 1772 sea voyage from Philadelphia to
England and back aboard the ship Mary and Elizabeth, James Sparks,
captain, containing a reference to John Woolman, a passenger; a
manuscript copy of an account of scalpings by Seneca Indians during the
Revolutionary War; a printed booklet of John Quincy Adams’ Fourth of
July oration (1821); drawings by Edward Cutbush, 1787, and by his
father, a shipyard carver; field books of Seth Pease and a Mr.
Stoddard’s 1799 survey for the assignees of Robert Morris (1734-1806);
and a log kept May 22 - October 10, 1836 aboard the ship Eunomus by its
captain, GEORGE W. ENDICOTT, on a voyage from Boston to Rio de Janeiro.
A significant item includes an article by F. L. Pleadwell (Annals of
Medical History, 1923) describing the life and writings of Dr. Edward
Cutbush who published Observations on the Means of Preserving the Health
of Sailors and Soldiers in 1808.

The papers also include letters and signed documents of: Aaron Burr
(1756-1836), Robert Morris (1734-1806), Thomas Morris and Henry R.
Schoolcraft.

3 12 Cartes de Visites: De Zeng, Seward, Endicott, de Lancey families
3 13 Cabinet Cards including: Caroline Rees Seward, Alice De Zeng

Seward, and Endicott, De Lancey, Seward and De Zeng families.
3 14 Photographs: various De Zeng and allied families including John
Endicott and Frederick A. De Zeng

4 3 Endicott family: sea voyage journal, 1836, poetry and prose,

First, I would like to WELCOME everyone to the first Endecott-Endicott Family Association, Inc. sponsored Focused Discussion Forum. This will be about Joseph Nation Endicott and Elizabeth Varner.

I would also like to remind everyone about our guidelines for this and possibly future Discussion Forums. You may want to take a quick look at them. They are posted on the Endicott_GEN.

We hope that you will find this discussion useful. And, I hope we all learn more about our Endicott ancestor Joseph Nation Endicott and his family.

Particularly of interest to me is source citations. And, I would very much enjoy learning more about Joseph Nation Endicott's service in the War of 1812. However, please don't hold back information if you do not have the source. Perhaps someone can verify it or maybe challenge it. We are looking for the best and most accurate information in our genealogy and Endicott family history pursuits..That's what it's all about.

Well...folks...here goes....my first contribution. Let's begin.

Cousin Susan

You are doing a GREAT job as Treasurer. 26 members to date. So far a good
representation nationally. Rome was not built in a day ....so, we are doing
good with the EFA, Inc. With the pending IRS work and incorporation in KY;
the Membership Development Plan in motion (9) nine volunteers so far to help
recruit members in their respective EFA, Inc. Regions (still working on
others); a pending EFA, Inc. newsletter; the NEW EFA, Inc. sponsored
Discussion Forum scheduled to kick off on February 1, 2003 at
Endicott_GEN@yahoogroups.com hosted by Cousin Kyle Elwood, EFA Inc.
Historian; and the great potential of our own EFA, Inc. web site being
thought out by Cousin Scott in California........I think, with the very fact
that we are so geographically dispersed, that we are doing just fine. Thank
the Lord for the computer.

Since Cousin Teddy Sanford, President.....our very capable and excellent
genealogy researcher, is quite occupied with the pending party in Iraq, I
have offered to help fill in....where I can...to help get the EFA, Inc. off
and running.

Always interested in feedback and help from others!!!!!

An Abbreviated Report on the Endecott-Endicott Cousins Reunion - May 31 - June 2, 2002 - Lexington, Kentucky

Cousins from nine states -- all of whom are direct descendants of Gov. John Endecott of Massachusetts -- gathered in Lexington, Kentucky, May 31 through June 2 for the first Endecott/Endicott Cousins Reunion. Though many had communicated with one another, some for several years, none had ever met. It did not take long, however, for them to become friends. And, in many cases, the physical similarities made it obvious they were all related -- even though distantly.

States represented included Washington, California, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, Florida, New Jersey and Kentucky. The fact that the numbers were small made it possible for the cousins to get to know one another better and to share not only family history but also personal and family interests.

Several arrived on Thursday night and began getting acquainted as early as the ride from the airport to reunion headquarters at the Ramada Inn Conference Center. They later joined other early birds for dinner and conversation.

Friday afternoon was a gathering time for the remainder of the group, and the three-day officially weekend opened with a dinner at Columbia's Steak House. Shortly after the group was seated, the restaurant manager came to say there was another Endicott couple in the bar -- R. Coleman Endicott, a retired Lexington attorney and his wife. (They had been invited to participate in the reunion, but had not responded.) They turned out to be originally from Eastern Kentucky, and apparently from the Samuel line being traced by Mel Endicott (Kansas) and Bill Endicott (New Jersey).

Following dinner, the majority of the group, went to The Red Mile for an evening of harness racing under the lights. We had a few winners and a few losers. Those of the "Samuel Line" returned to the Ramada Inn and were rejoined by Coleman Endicott. They spent until after midnight exploring the Eastern Kentucky and Virginia connections and looking for that elusive link to Governor John.

Saturday morning began with a breakfast, followed by a GENJAM at which each attendee shared his/her family history. Except for those of the "Samuel Line", most everyone present was a descendant of Thomas Endecott Sr., who came to Kentucky in the 1780s and settled near Cynthiana. Thomas Endecott and Sarah Welsh had nine children. Those attending the reunion were primarily descended from Moses (Elaine Endicott Herring), Joseph (Teddy Sanford Jr.), Thomas Jr. (Sue Endicott Alexander), and William (Gordon Harmon). Stories relating to parents, grandparents and other ancestors were told by various attendees. (Some of these will be transcribed at a later date from a tape made of the morning session.)

At the end of the session, the group decided to form the Endecott-Endicott Family Association, incorporating in Kentucky. Those attending the reunion all joined as charter members. Details on the goals and objectives of the association are contained in other documents.

Following lunch as Ramsey's members of the group took advantage of free time to visit points of interest in the area.

The Saturday evening banquet included a silent auction which included a number of items related to family history. The auction brought in $231 which will be used to provide funds necessary to incorporate the Endecott-Endicott Family Association.

Teddy Sanford served as master of ceremonies for the banquet, which was also attended by several Lexington "Endicotts" who had not participated in other reunion events. Teddy also gave a presentation on "The Historical Members of the Endicott Clan". These included Governor John Endecott, Joseph Endecott, Thomas Endecott Sr. and Joseph Endicott (son of Moses). A complete copy of Ted's presentation is available from him.

Also on the program was John Alexander, husband of Sue Endicott Alexander, who is descended from pioneer families who helped to found Kentucky's first permanent settlement at Harrodsburg.

The concluding event -- and perhaps the high point of the reunion -- was the Sunday morning trip to the Endecott Meeting House near Cynthiana. The Meeting House, founded in 1790 and the oldest house of worship in continuous use west of the Alleghenies, is also known as the Indian Creek Baptist Church. After many years of services only being conducted on the first Sunday afternoon of the month, the church is once again being used on a weekly basis as a mission church of the Union Baptist Association. Rev. Thomas Moore, the pastor, was most gracious to the Endicott group both during the services and afterward for photo sessions in the church yard/cemetery. (A photo of the group with Rev. Moore is scheduled to appear in the Cynthiana Democrat on June 27).

After a lunch at Kentucky Fried Chicken in Cynthiana, many hugs, well wishes and promises to keep in touch, the members of the group went their separate ways.

Can everyone please assist me by doing the following...

I would like to make a list of all Endicotts whose first or middle name
is Samuel or
middle initial is 'S.' and who was or likely was born in the 1700s.

Please include any titles, spouse names, parent names, dates of birth,
dates of death ,
children and sibling names that are known.

The purpose is to take another looksee for the elusive Samuel Endicott.
I am wondering
if this Samuel may actually be his middle name but that he 'went by' Samuel.

Thanks in advance for your help.

surprised at the
publication; that so far as he was concerned there was not a word of

Thought this might be of some help on Kyle's posting about  the Samuel's b. in the 1700s. And, the possibility of the Elusive One using a middle name...Samuel.

I use it quite often when researching parents.

Approximating Ages and Dates. Birth and marriage of parents can be approximated using the guidelines suggested in Beverly Delong Whitaker. Beyond Pedigrees, Organizing and Enhancing Your Work (Salt Lake City, Utah: Ancestry). pg. 48

To estimate a male's birth date when marriage date is known:
  • Marriage date - 40 years = beginning of years to be searched
  • Marriage date - 16 years = ending of years to be searched
To estimate a female's birth date when childrens' birth dates are known:

  • Birth date of last child - 50 years = beginning of years to be searched
  • Birth date of first child - 16 years = ending of years to be searched
To estimate a marriage date when childrens' birth dates are known:
  • Birth date of last child - 35 years = beginning of years to be searched
  • Birth date of first child + 1 year = ending of years to be searched
To estimate a death date when birth date is known:
  • Last date known alive = beginning of years to be searched
  • Birth date + 90 years = ending of years to be searched
" You can assume a generation span of twenty-five to thirty years. You can apply these formulas to known information to estimate dates of birth, marriage, and death. Determine a fairly wide span in which to search".

The list, the list owner(s) or its moderators do not benefit financially from this list and its activities."
  • It is requested that any information in the form of photographs, documents, images, etc. be transmitted to the DISCUSSION FORUM as a copy and paste to the text of the body of the mail with comments, as necessary, Attachments should be avoided IF at all possible due to the reluctance of some to open attachments.

8. Discussion on the parents, siblings and children of Joseph Nation Endicott and Elizabeth Varner is also encouraged. Any historical accounts of the life and times (timeline) of Joseph Nation Endicott/Elizabeth Varner and the history of places where they lived is also encouraged. Please provide references when used. Varner genealogical information is equally encourage where available.

It might be worthwhile having focus discussions on specific
Endicott ancestors.

For example, we are currently looking at Thomas Endicott and
his wife Sarah Welsh. Thomas also had another marriage which
generate offspring. A comprehensive, focused discussion might
help to clear up some variables and unknowns on each generation.
It would also help to add to our list group as we could invite
known researchers of each specific line to the list to
participate in the discussion and gain from it as well (who
are not already on the list).

I would be happy to arrange the first such focus discussion on
Thomas Endicott/Sarah Welsh(1)/Susannah Turner Young(2) as much
of the ground work for such is already started.

Is this idea of interest to the group?

Subject: Genealogy Group Focus Discussion on Thomas Endicott/Endecott &
Sarah Welsh/Welch
<http://homepages.rootsweb.com/%7Escismfam/endicott/archives/2720>

Hello,

This notice is being sent out to all genealogy researchers who have
been observed to have researched family lines that include or touched
on the family of Thomas Endecott/Endicott (born about 1737 and died
about 1827) and his first wife, Sarah Welsh/Welch. Thomas also had
a second wife that produced offspring.

The purpose of this notice is to announce that a focus discussion
will occur on this family and will discuss all details regarding it...

touching on all pieces of information in the possession of all
researchers participating that relate to this family, including
parents, siblings, children and other historical data.

This dicussion will be initiated on Sunday, April 21st, 2002 and will
continue until all information sharing seems to have exhausted
itself. The discussion will occur on the primary Endicott genealogy
forum located at:

http://www.yahoogroup
s.com/group/Endicott <http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/Endicott>

If you do not already participate in this forum (which currently
includes 89 Endicott researchers), you may subscribe to this e-mail
listserv by sending a blank e-mail to:

Endicott-

or you can go directly to the website and subscribe there.

It is the intent of this focus discussion that all researchers
interested will come away with substantially more data and more
accurate data than they had before...
that questions that have
lingered will be answered (and possibly more questions will be
raised).

This is the first such focus discussion on the list and, if
successful, will be followed by many more and will likely prove
to be a valuable tool for all participating Endicott researchers.

Those who plan on participating, please access all your data
relating to this family and prepare to share that information
and have discussion on this information starting this Sunday.
Be prepared to cite the sources of your information.

If you are aware of other researchers of this line that may be
interested, please feel free to invite them as well.

Hope to see you involved in the discussion. Best wishes.

Sincerely,

Kyle Elwood

Descendant of Thomas Endecott and Sarah Welsh via their son

Sorry about the delay in starting, hda to finish the
honey-do list before starting the Endicott list. ;)

Let's start by printing the information contained in Mabel
McFatridge-McCloskey's 1943 book. Regarding this information,
please submit to the list commentary on this information if
you have data that conflicts with this information in ANY way
or adds to this information in ANY way. Additional details
are desired, no matter how minor...
such as spelling differences.
Please also cite the source of your information if known.

Kyle Elwood

------------------------------

From Mabel McFatridge-McCloskey, 1943:

Governor John Endecott and wife Elisabeth Gibson had two sons,
one of which was Zerubbabel Endecott (born in 1635).

Zerubbabel Endecott married Mary Smith? in 1654 and they had
many children including a son named Joseph who was born between
1671 & 1672.

Joseph Endicott (Sr) (b 1672 d May 1747) married Hannah ????.
They had at least 5 children which included a son, Joseph (Jr).

In the genealogy document known as "The Endicott Family" by
Charles M. Endicott, Esqire of Salem, Mass. which was
written in the mid to later 1840s, Charles Endicott noted
that Joseph, Jr, the 3rd child of Joseph and Hannah, probably
never married and that there was no memorial of him. As
such, no further documentation occurred of his line in this
document.

However, as noted in the genealogy book "Some Descendants of
John Endecott, Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony" by
Mabel McFatridge-McCloskey, 1943, Joseph Endicott, Jr (born
about 1711 near Mt Holly, Burlington county, New Jersey and
who died between July 13, 1748, the date of his will, and
March 1, 1749, when the will was recorded) did get married.
He married Ann Gillam (Gilham), who was born in 1715, on May
19, 1736.

It is interesting to note how Joseph, Sr, handled Joseph, Jr
in his will:

-----------------------------------

New Jersey Wills. 4057. Will of Joseph Endecott, Sr. Dated
February 14, 1747. I, Joseph Endecott Senior of township
Northhampton, county of Burlington, in western division in the
province of West New Jersey, sick and weak of body, but of
perfect mind and memory---will beloved wife, Hannah, sole
executrix, the whole estate during lifetime. To daughter,
Elizabeth Delavoue living in Pennsylvania, 20 pounds; to
daughter, Ann Gillam, Northhampton, Burlington county, New
Jersey, 20 pounds; to grandson, Joseph Bushop, 10 pounds at
death of Hannah or when 21 years of age. To son, John, all
real estate at mother's death. At mother's death, all moveable
estate divided equally between daughters, Elizabeth and Ann.

To son, Joseph, Jr., 5 shillings and no more to be paid at
father's death. Signed: Joseph Endecott

The will was probated, May 1747.

Northampton, May 29, 1747. The True and Perfect Inventory of
all Goods, Rights, and Credits and all the Estate real and
Personal of Joseph Endecott Senior, Late of the township of
Northampton, county of Burlington, West New Jersey. Deceased.

To the Purse and Apparel: 27 Pounds 18 Shillings 6 Pence
13.66 Pounds and 13.5 Pounds to above intrest there on to
    this day.

To Warming Pan and other Article: 1 Pound 10 Shillings 6 Pence
To Chests and linens: 3 Pounds
To Chests and blankets: 3 Pounds 6 Shillings

To A Harpe and other articles: 10 Pounds 16 Shillings 2 Pence

The whole amounting to 104 Pounds 16 Shillings 6 Pence
Appraised by Thomas Haines, James Wicks

--------------------------------

Evidently the wife and sons were not altogether pleased with
Joseph Senior's will as the following seems to indicate.

On April 19, 1748, Joseph's brother, John, sold him 150 acres
of land for 125 English pounds (deed to follow). At Joseph's
death in 1749, the farm was sold to pay his debts and to perform
his agreement with his mother, Hannah Endecott. His wife, Ann,
was named as well. His children were not named in his will but
were mentioned in New Jersey Wills on page 4229 (will to follow).
He advised that they be taught a trade, since he had no property
to leave them.

----------------------------

Deed: Liber g. page 255. 1748 deed. John to Joseph, Jr.

This indenture made April 19, 1748 between John Endecott of
Eversham, county of Burlington, West New Jersey, Yeoman of the
one part and Joseph Endecott of Northampton in County and
privince aforesaid; Yeoman of the other part, Witneasth that
the said John Endecott for 125 Pounds hath sold to said Joseph
Endecott one certain messuage; Dwelling house, tenement and tract
or parcel of land with all and singular houses, out houses, barns,
stables, buildings and improvements, lying and being in
Northampton bounded by Thomas Wills on N. and E. by Benjamin
Brown on W. and S.--containing 150 A. (acres) together with all
and singular mines, minerals, woods, waters, Hawking, Hunting,
Fishing and the other Royalties, franchises, Powers, profits,
commodities, hereditaments, appurtenances--and all Estates and
rights of said John Endecott in the Property which said tract of
land said John Endecott became lawfully seized, by virtue of last
Will and Testament of his father, Joseph Endecott of Northampton
aforesaid deceased, who in his life purchased said land in part
from Robert Shaw who purchased the same of Henry Green to whom
the same was Surveyed by virtue of a good English proprietary
right to land in New Jersey aforesaid--and the other part from
Richard Brown as by the said survey and several deeds of
Purchase and last Will and Testament recourse being there to
had. Said John Endecott grants this deed to have and to hold
to Joseph Endecott.

In witness whereof:

James Wills John Endecott (his mark X)
Hannah Endecott (her mark) 4-19-1748
John Burry, Jr.

-------------------------------

Apparently, the surviving family members felt that Joseph should
have received the property. John sold his inherited interest in
the real estate to Joseph and his mother, Hannah, appears to have
financed the purchase (as the Will of Joseph, Jr. seems to imply,
see below). Perhaps Hannah encouraged John to sell it to Joseph
with the idea that he could have the money now rather than wait
for her death...
which could take, who knows how long. Alas, it
was not to be for Joseph, Jr., as he died within months of the
purchase. Joseph, Jr's Will follows:

-------------------------------

New Jersey Will. 4229 C.

July 14, 1748. I, Joseph Endecott of township Northampton and
county of Burlington in West division of Province of New Jersey,
Yeoman, sick and weak of body, ut of deposing mind and memory---

I leave my plantation wherein I dwell, together with all lands
and all my personal estate to be sold and monies arising there
from to be applied to pay my debts, funeral charges and to
perform my agreement made by me with my mother, Hannah Endecott,
and what remains I give the same to my dear and well beloved
wife, Ann Endecott, the better to enable her to bring up my
children and I advise said wife that she put out my children to
trades at suitable age, I having no estate to leave them.

Named wife Ann, Executrix and friend James Wills Executor.
Joseph made his mark, probably too ill to write.

A True Inventory of the Money, credits, goods and chattles
(probably supposed to be the word chattel) of Joseph Endecott,
deceased. February 27, 1749.

To his Purse and apparel: 6 Pounds 13 Shillings
To Credits: 6 Pounds 11 Shillings 5 Pence
To Beds and Furniture: 12 Pounds
To Pewter and sundry other things: 9 Pounds 10 Shillings 6 Pence
To Cows and sundry other things: 10 Pounds
To Meats and husbandry gear: 11 Pounds 9 Shillings 6 Pence
To a wagon: 4 Pounds
To corn on the ground, Plows and Harrows: 5 Pounds 17 Shillings
To Horses and sheep: 17 Pounds
To Hogs and hay: 6 Pounds 15 Shillings
To Cattle: 14 Pounds

Appraised by us. Michael Woolston, Thomas Budd

------------------------------------

The widowed, Ann Endecott, subsequently married Reuben Eldridge
on April 29, 1751. Documentation apparently existed in 1943 to
show that Ann was living in Juliustown, New Jersey on August 5,
1783 at the age of 68 years.

The family Bible of Joseph and Ann Endecott was, in 1943, in
the possession of Charles Endicott, Indianapolis, Indiana,
formerly if Danville, Illinois. It was published in 1735 at
Edinburg, Scotland. Charles Endicott is a descendant of
Samuel Endecott, third son of Joseph and Ann.

Data copied from this Bible, at Danville, Illinois on October
22, 1933 by Mabel McCloskey: "Thomas Endecott, son of Joseph
and Ann Endecott, was born March 27, 1737." (the horizontal
line at the top of the last 7 not distinct, but under a strong
reading glass was faintly discernable). All data copied.

The Bible also recorded the names of Joseph, Samuel, Barzillai
and Sarah.

I. THOMAS ENDECOTT was born March 27, 1737
II. Joseph Endecott was born June 8, 1738
III. Samuel Endecott was born February 5, 1741/1742
IV. Barzillai Endecott was born March 20, 1743/1743
V. Sarah Endecott was born December 6, 1744
VI. Prazillia Endecott was born December 9, 1746

I. THOMAS ENDECOTT (Sr) was a farmer. May have been a carpenter
too. Born March 27, 1737 near Mt Holly, Burlington county, New
Jersey and died January 22, 1831 in Smith township, Posey county,
Indiana. He married Sarah Welsh on June 19, 1759 in Burlington
county, New Jersey (New Jersey Archives I Ser. Vol. 22, New
Jersey Marriages) and lived near long bridge, Mt Holly, New
Jersey (Here Moses, Joseph and Aaron were born). THOMAS lived
near Mt Holly, New Jersey in 1763 (New Jersey Archives I Ser.
Vol. 24, Newspaper Ads). Shortly afterward, the trek southward
began. It seems probable that sometime was spent in Viginia,
however, by 1775 the Endecotts had settled in Surry county,
North Carolina near the Virginia border in the vacinity of Low
Gap. Near Low Gap is a stream called Endicott Creek which flows
past the old home of Governor Franklin of Revolutionary War fame.
Since there is no court record that THOMAS, Sr. owned land in
North Carolina, it seems likely that he followed some occupation
other than farming. Sarah died between 1790 and 1799. in Kentucky.

THOMAS then married Susannah Turner Young, a widow, on October 4,
1814 in Nicholas county, Kentucky.

New Jersey Archives S. I V 24 Newspaper Extract. Penna. Gazette.
V 24. p. 165. April 1763. "In gaol, Philadelphia, runaway
servant,
Jane Ratcliffe, from Thomas Indicutt, living near Mt Holly, New
Jersey come and get her or else she will be sold for 8 months
keep."

Sometime after 1763, THOMAS left New Jersey. From 1775 to 1786, he
lived in Surry county, North Carolina, as per pages 1 and 3 of the
pension papers of his son, Moses, who served in the Revolutionary
War. He may have lived in Virginia before going to North Carolina.,
Welmet Endecott, widow of Moses, stated on September 20, 1855 that
the Endecotts formerly lived in the the "eastern part of Old
Virginia"...
as per the pension papers, page 21. They then came to
Kentucky in 1786...
as per pension paper pages 7 and 8. Moses
pension papers, number 26645, from Kentucky; 25 pages.

The pension papers on page 8 quote: "that he (Thomas, Sr's son,
Thomas, Jr), with all his family, left Carolina about the year
1786 and settled in Kentucky where the family now resides...
some
in Bourbon county and others in Harrison county, close
together."
Sworn to on September 14, 1832 by Thomas, Jr Endecott in Harrison
county, Kentucky.

From Land Transactions section Mabel's book: Land transactions
of THOMAS ENDECOTT, Sr.:

April 1789, Edward and Sarah Mitchell, county of Fayette, State
of Virginia to THOMAS INDICUTT, county of Fayette, Virginia, 100
acres on Greer's Creek in Woodford county, State of Virginia,
for 60 Pounds. Witnesses, Barzillai Endecott, Aaron Endecott,
John Bailey. Recorded September 2, 1789, Book A. page 10 by
Cave Johnson, Clerk. From the 'Proof of Descent' section of
Mabel's book it is stated as Kentucky instead. These counties
are currently in Kentucky. Does anyone know what the status of
this area was during the transaction time period?

Book A. page 62. THOMAS and Sarah Indicutt, county of Woodford,
Virginia, to Henry Shous, 100 acres between Clear Creek and
Greer Creek for 100 Pounds. February 2, 1790. Signed, THOMAS

October 7, 1792, THOMAS ENDECOTT of Bourbon county, Kentucky
bought from Richard Young and wife Mary, of Woodford county,
Kentucky, 192 acres on Indian Creek in Bourbon county,
Kentucky for 70 Pounds.

August 17, 1798, James Scearce and Henrietta to THOMAS ENDECOTT
of Bourbon county, 50 acres for 45 Pounds between waters of
Indian Creek and Sycamore Creek and adjoining Hugh Wilson and
Moses Endecott.

That information is listed in the document about half-way through
and is in Mabel's 1943 book. Mabel had actually used the Bible as
a reference in the development of her records.

Tonight, I have spent several hours pouring over Kyle Elwood's
submission for the Discussion Forum which I think is a wonderful
idea. In Kyle's submission, there was lots of new material. I have
checked and doubled checked all of that data against The Endecott-
Endicott Family History, 2002 Copyright. I do, however have several
comments. I will for now outline them as it is quite late here and
the ole eyes are kinda blurry. These three are the first ones that
jumped out at me...
...

1. page 4. "Since there is no court record that THOMAS, Sr.
owned land in North Carolina, it seems likely...
...
." HAVE A CONFLICT WITH THAT. I believe he did. WILL ADDRESS
THAT ONE AT A LATER TIME with documentation of evidence of land
ownership.

2. page 5. April 1789. "Does anyone know what the status of
this area was during the transaction time period?" YES. MAYBE
page 252 (Kentucky Historical County lines...
.1788) and page 253 (Counties of Kentucky...
..1792) of The Endecott-Endicott Family History, 2002 Copyright by
Gordon Stewart Harmon) will help solve this mystery.

3. page 6. Siblings of Thomas Endicott, Sr.
II. Joseph Endicott notation. HAVE A CONFLICT WITH THAT. Have spent
several years trying to sort this out and other Josephs. I have five
(5) consecutive Josephs in my Endicott line. Cousin Teddy H. Sanford
(descendant of Richard B. Endicott b: 1814 Woodford County, KY...
.page 27 of The Endecott-Endicott Family History, 2002) and I have
kicked this one around for several years. Teddy finally bought my
case...
...
.I think...
.. And Teddy aint no pushover. He requires a tough sale. WILL
ADDRESS THIS CONFLICT LATER IN A DAY OR SO. Its an important one, but
the more I work on it...
the more confused I become. But, I think I finally have it.

4, There is considerable more data shown in The Endecott-Endicott
Family History, 2002 not shown in what Kyle provided on Thomas
Endecott and Sarah Welsh. Lots of more information on children...
dates...
places...
marriages...
deaths of death, etc. of the Thomas and Sarah descendancy.

This is good information to share and discuss at the Endicott Cousin
Reunion in Lexington KY May 31-June 2. It is on June 1 that we will
be having our GENFORUM for this very kind of thing. If any new
revealing information comes to light during the GENFORUM, I will pass
it on to the Onelist. Also still plan to submit a report to Rebecca
Shulmire post Endicott Cousin Reunion with photos. I will also be
attending the Endicott Family Reunion in Wichita KS May 24-26 while I
will be speaking at the Banquet on Saturday, May 25.

Gordon
...
.once again, Kyle...
great idea. Lets go folks...
.add to the discussion. This is what it is all about. Thanks.

Explanation of the Differences of Opinion Among Family Historians
and Genealogists

on

Joseph Endecott b: 1738 (Generation # 14)

and

Joseph Endecott b: 1775 (Generation # 15)

as shown in

The Endecott-Endicott Family History, 2002 by Gordon Stewart Harmon

A number of sources and reference material has been researched to
determine and compare what others have distinguished between Joseph
Endecott b: 1738 in Mt. Holly, Burlington Co., New Jersey and Joseph
Endecott b: 1775 in North Carolina. For comparisons, this author is
showing below what that researched has revealed.

While this source can not be authenticated, it does show Joseph
Endecott b: 1738 as wife unknown

Source 2. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/-
groves/d1053.htm
<http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/-%0D%0Agroves/d1053.htm> Also, this
source can not be authenticated, but
is shows Joseph Endecott b: 1738 as wife unknown

Source 3. Ted Sanford writes on April 17, 2001 "I am convinced
that Joseph (1738) went to Virginia and later North Carolina with his
brother Thomas (1737). When Thomas and his family left North Carolina
for Kentucky in 1786 after the Revolution, Joseph stayed on there for
another ten years and married Welmett Nation. That is why William H.
and Joseph Nation were born there before the family came on to
Kentucky. Notice Joseph "Nation", another reason to believe
that she was his mom. When Joseph did come to Kentucky, they lived
near the rest of the family, and that is how Moses and Welmett got to
know each other and married soon after the death of Martha Hill. I
don't think that Joseph (1775) has any part in this drama other than
his middle name was "Nation" after his mom."

Source 4. Bonnie Wilson's interpretation of Some Descendants of John
Endecott, Governor, Mass Bay Colony by Mabel McFatridge McCloskey,
1943 and revised 1959 shows Welmet Nation b: Stokes Co., North
Carolina 1792 married Joseph Endicott (1792?-1833)

Source 5. Jeff Scism in his Descendants of Welmet Nation shows that
she married Joseph Endecott b: 1770 and married abt. 1790.

Source 6. Family Tree Maker Report (FTM) (author unknown)
Descendants of Joseph Endicott b: 1738 shows wife unknown and Joseph
Endicott b: abt 1771 married Welmet Nation abt 1791.

Source 7. The Outline Descendant Tree 12-26-99 (author unknown) of
Joseph Endicott shows Joseph Endicott b: 1770 married Welmet Nation.

Source 8 Some Descendants of John Endecott, Governor of Mass Bay
Colony by Mable McFatridge McCloskey, 1943 shows that Joseph Endecott
b: June 8, 1738 with wife unknown and Joseph 6 b: btw 1770-1780 and
married abt 1792 to Welmet Nation. pp 185-186

Source 9. Gloria M. Cox in her "Into this Fruitful Valley"
states " this author, using her own research records and the
writings of Miss Mable McGlauglin published in the Indiana Magazine
of History as proof, believes the father of Joseph Nation Endicott to
be Joseph Endicott, the son of Thomas Endicott and the brother of
Moses Endicott. Mable McCloskey in her book "Some Descendants of
John Endicott, Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony" contends
that the father of Joseph Nation was the brother of Thomas Endicott.
Joseph Endicott, the son of Thomas Endicott, married Wilmot Phillips.
After the death of Joseph Endicott, his widow married Moses Endicott,
his brother. Since, according to McCloskey's records, Joseph
Endicott, the brother of Thomas, was born in 1738, and Wilmot, the
mother of Joseph Nation was born in the 1770s, there seems to be a
huge age difference. Joseph Endicott, son of Thomas was born abt
1761."

Source 10. The Endicott Family Descended from Governor John
Endecott, Massachusetts Bay Boston 1666 by Ralph E. K. Jones, 1935
states "Joseph of Nicholas County, Kentucky (1761-1830) married
Willmet Phillips in North Carolina. One of their children was Joseph
Nation Endicott (1795-1874), Benton, Illinois who married Elizabeth
Varner."

Source 11. In an email from Ted Sanford to Ann Metzler on April 30,
2001, he states, "In your generation directly following Thomas
Endicott/Sarah Welsh, I say that the next generation is Joseph
Endicott b: June 8, 1738 and Welmett Nation. He was the younger
brother of Thomas Endicott b: 1737 and traveled with him to North
Carolina from New Jersey and Virginia. When Thomas and his family
left Carolina for Kentucky in 1786, Joseph stayed on and married
Welmett Nation. This fits with the name of the second son, Joseph
Nation Endicott (1795-1874) who was born in North Carolina".

These are the only sources to date that have been found to help sort
out the differences of opinion on these two Josephs, namely
generation 14 and generation 15. As the reader can clearly see, there
remains a great difference of views of just how the two Josephs can
be sorted out.

In the author's own personal judgment, he believes that the
references used in Mabel McFatridge McCloskey's work of 1943 and
revised in 1959 are the most reliable, most thoroughly researched,
and documented resource that has been discovered to date. A thorough
explanation is given for the Joseph's of Woodford, Harrison, and
Bourbon Counties of Kentucky. Other sources have not as of yet proven
(and with documented proof), without a doubt, any difference than the
conclusion of the McCloskey work. Therefore, until which time,
evidence points to the contrary, this author has shown Joseph
Endecott b: 1738 and Joseph Endicott b: 1775 in their respective
order of descendancy and with their known or unknown wives and
children. The author welcomes and encourages additional information
to prove or disprove this order of Endicott descendancy and
association.

Subject: From the Endicott/Mullens/Mikels Genealogy Document-1930s
<http://homepages.rootsweb.com/%7Escismfam/endicott/archives/2739>

From the Endicott/Mullens/Mikels Genealogy Document-1930s:

The United Stated Census of Poey County, Indiana, for the year
1850, lists Absolam Turner Endicott as 33 years of age, he was
therefore born in 1817 and was ten years of age at the time
Thomas Endicott made his will, and Thomas must have been about
eighty years of age at the time of his son's birth. Land
transfers of record in Harrison County, Kentucky, support the
statement made in the will of Thomas Endicott that his sons by
his first marriage (to Sarah Welch) had received their portion
of his estate prior to the date of his will. It is probable
that he gave each of his children their proportionate share of
his holdings preparatory to his marriage to Susanah Young.
Thomas Endicott may have been born subsequent to 1737, as we
have no actual record of the date of his birth. Mrs. Mary
Lovering Holman, genealogist of Wathertown, Massachusetts,
having assumed he was born about 1737, after a study of New
Jersey records for 20 or 25 years. Mrs. Holman has been
engaged in the study of the Endicott family history under the
direction of Mr. William Crowninshield Endicott. After the
marriage of Thomas Endicott and Sarah Welch, his name entirely
vanishes from the New Jersey records. He was probably a
resident of North Carolina from that time until 1786, the date
of his removal to Kentucky. The Bible willed to Absolam Turner
Endicott, if in existence today, would undoubtedly give much
desired date to descendants. Thomas Endicott Jr., son of Thomas
Sr., and brother of Moses was living in Harrison Co., Kentucky
in 1834, deposition to that effect being on file with Pension
Department, Washington D.C., while Thomas, son of Samuel Endicott
served according to Ferrin's History, as Deputy Clerk of Harrison
County, Kentucky in 1832.

I am going to add to this discussion, details on the children
of THOMAS ENDECOTT, Sr and Sarah Welsh (phase one):

1. Moses Endecott, b 10-31-1759, Burlington county, New Jersey

------------------------

From Endicott/Mullen/Mikels Genealogy Document, 1930s:

----

(Contributed by Mary Emily [Mullen] Hensley, descendant of Sarah
[Endicott] Mullen):

Moses Endicott was born in Burlington County, New Jersey, in
October 1759. An affadavit made by him in March 1833, Harrison
County, Kentucky, states the record is an old family Bible now in
my possession.

He entered the Revolutionary War as a volunteer in October 1777,
and served three months under Capt. William Hardin and Col. Joseph
Williams. About March 1780 he entered a new service-packing lead
from Chilses mine on New River, Virginia, and was so employed until
a few days before the battle of Camden, when they heard of the
defeat of Gates while on the way to the mines--the trip was
abandoned. He was in several skirmishes with Tories near the big
glades on New River and on Reedy Fork of the Haw River. His
residence was in Surry County, North Carolina. A short time
previous to the battle of Kings Mountain his horse was stolen.
This prevented his participation in that battle. He was on foot
with the foot soldiers who went a different route in an attempt
to intercept a British Commander, Major Ferguson. He continued
in this service about six weeks, and was thereafter engaged
against Tory uprisings after the battle of Guilford Court House.
In the spring of 1781 he left the service.

Nancy Anne Miller, Lebanon, Indiana, gave practically the same
war record for Moses Endicott.

Susan DeLon, Russiaville, Indiana, descendant of James Endicott,
adds to the above facts the statement that Moses Endicott and
Martha Hill were married in 1784.

The Moses Endicott Revolutionary Service is on file with the
Pension Department, Washington, D.C. as he applied for pension
and it was granted a few months prior to his death in 1834. A
tablet placed on the wall of the Paris, Kentucky Court House in
memory of Revolutionary soldiers buried in Bourbon County bears
his name. The land owned by Moses Endicott was on the line of
Harrison and Bourbon Counties. The Endicotts left North
Carolina for Kentucky in 1786. Family tradition relates that
their guide was their friend and neighbor, Daniel Boone.
Treasure heirlooms in the hands of descendants in 1931 are a
compass and sunglass. These pieces were given to Abraham Miller
by Daniel Boone as a token of Boone's appreciation of the eleven
year boy's presence of mind and marksmanship. Abraham was
bringing the cows up at milking time and killed a panther that
was about to attack he and his herd. Abraham Miller married
Elizabeth Endicott, daughter of Moses and Martha Hill Endicott.
The compass is now in the possession of Claude E. Hensley,
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is the son of Mary E. (Mullen)
Hensley, while the sunglass belongs to her sister, Minnie A.
(Mullen) Alsbury of Yakima, Washington.

MILITARY RECORD OF MOSES ENDICOTT FROM THE WAR DEPARTMENT

He enlisted October 1777, served three months as private under
Capt. William Hardin and Col. Joseph Williams. Enlisted from
North Carolina, reinlisted March 1, 1778 and served until March
1781 as Minuet {spelling as listed in document} man under Capt.
William Underwood and Col. Benjamin Cleavland, enlisted from
North Carollina. Battles engaged in were skirmishes with Tories
near the big glades on New River and in upper part of North
Carolina and Reedy Fork of the Haw River. His residence was
Surry county, North Carolina. He was there until 1786. He
applied for pension March 12, 1833. His claim was allowed.
Residence at date of application was Bourbon county, Kentucky.
Born at Burlington county, New Jersey, October 1759. Married
first Martha Hill in 1784. Soldier married in Harrison county,
Kentucky, March 27, 1834---second time. His second wife's name
was Welmet Endicott.

----

One of the first acts of the ENDICOTTs was to establish a
meeting house. This still stands in Harrison County, Kentucky
and is located on land that once belonged to Moses ENDICOTT.
It is known as the ENDICOTT meeting house and was built about
1791. Will Clay ENDICOTT, Cynthiana, Kentucky, describes it as
follows: "The Indian Creek Baptist Church was built the year
after the ENDICOTTs bought land on Indian Creek. The first
records of the Cynthiana Christian Church contain the names of
members who took membership from the Endicott meeting house. It
could be no other than this church which I am told was
nonsectarian previous to 1840. The original log structure is
beneath the weather-boarding. The pulpit is at the back,
opposite to the center window. You will note there are two
doors, as was the custom in the early days--the men entered the
left door and the women the right."

Moses ENDICOTT left no will. Mrs. Mary E. HENSLEY, El Renao,
Oklahoma, states that he died suddenly, having suffered a stroke
of apoplexy {Kyle note: nowadays termed a stroke syndrome or
cerebrovascular accident or CVA}. He was a slave owner and had
promised freedom to a faithful old Mammy, but his sudden death
prevented the fulfilling of this promise.

Deed Book 14, Page 432, Harrison County Court Clerk's Office
records deed settling the estate and reads as follows: "The
said Moses ENDICOTT had as his heirs at law during his life
time: Joseph ENDICOTT and wife, Rebecca (CASEY), John A.
ENDICOTT and wife, Zerelda (NISBET), Jessie ENDICOTT and wife,
Sally (LOWE), James ENDICOTT and wife, Elizabeth (MILLER),
Abraham Miller and wife, Elizabeth (ENDICOTT), Moses ENDICOTT

Wow, another connection to the BOONES, Abraham Miller was a GGGreat
Uncle on
my Miller side, his Nephew was Abraham George Miller, Jr, My
GGreatgrandfather. Son of Abraham's brother George. George's Father
was also
noted as a participant in the Battle for Kings Mountain, the
Millers were in
Crab Orchard Tennessee, and set up a Blacksmithy on Little Doe
River at
Shelving Rock (Carter County, State of Franklin). When the Kings
Mountain
group needed horses shod, they did it. (My direct lines were always
with the
Boones, although I have no direct descent from them, several aunts
and Uncles
married Daniel Boone's siblings and Nieces and nephews- Crowley,
Dagley,
Miller, Peffley, Stover, and now another MILLER) There were 24
children of
John Miller, and many were staunch pioneers. (They were the FIRST
settlers in
Tennessee, Indiana-(Montgomery County), First in Mercer County,
Illinois, and
nearly the first in Linn County Oregon, ( Boones went with them in
1847)

Here is some of the documentation for the Kings Mountain references:

JOHN MILLER was a contemorary of the Boone family and apparently
Migrated
with Squire Boone (Daniel Boone's father) to NC and then to what is
now
Tennessee

Revolutionary War Soldier. Fought at Kings Mountain.

Copied from Descendants of George Miller, 14 Jun 1996 by Charmian
Poe:

John Miller, then residing in the Washington District, Virginia,
assisted in
establishing American Independence, while acting in the capacity of
Soldier
and Patriot, serving in the Colonial Army under George Washington
for eight
years. Historians note that "he shod horses of men on their
way to King's
Mountain." Later he settled his household on the Doe River,
Carter Co., in
East Tennessee. He and all his six children migrated into Wayne
County,
Indiana before 1810. He refused land grants saying he owed his
service to
his country.

Mary and John are buried on the farm of their daughter, Elizabeth
and Samuel
Stover, where they resided during their declining years: Today the
Stover
farm is owned by Ivan Clevenger and is on the Whitewater River near
Brownsville (Union County today but then part of Wayne County,
Indiana).

A History of Watauga County, North Carolina

John Preston Arthur
pages 57-59

Washington County--formerly
Washington District-...
The Farthing grant is to John Carter for 300
acres in the county of Washington, beginning on two white oaks
standing near
the path that leads across Stone Mountain to Cove Creek and on the
west side
of the Beaver Dam Creek. It is dated November 17, 1790, and is
numbered 947,
and recorded in the office of the Secretary's office, page 234.

For, when the
Watauga settlers set up house-keeping on their own hook, they had
named the
territory they had acquired from the Indians by lease and purchase
Washington
District, and in 1777, before they tried to secede, calling the new
State
Franklin, North Carolina converted Washington District into
Washington
County.
(Laws 1777, ch. 126.) Dr. Draper continues: "Thence from
Talbot's Mill to
its head, where they bore somewhat to the left, crossing Little Doe
River,
reaching the noted 'Resting Place,' at the Shelving Rock, about a
mile beyond
the Crab Orchard, where, after a march of about twenty miles that
day, they
took up their camp for the night. Big Doe River, a bold and limpid
mountain
stream, flowing hard by, afforded the campers, their horses and beef
cattle
abundance of pure and refreshing water. Here a man of the name of
Miller
resided who shod several of the horses of the party."

Even Homer and Dr. Draper Sometimes Nod.-- Notwithstanding all the
pains Dr.
Draper took to get the facts for his excellent "Kings Mountain
and its
Heroes," his failure to visit the actual scenes along the route
of the King's
Mountain men is responsible
for the error in the statement that the Big Doe River, flowing hard
by,
afforded the campers, etc., abundance of pure and refreshing
water." The
nearest point from the Shelving Rock to the Big Doe River is at
least one
mile
and a half where that stream flows through the crab Orchard, and
route to it
is over a rather high ridge and by a rough trail. But the Little
Doe, with
enough pure and refreshing water for all the men and stock then in
what is
now
Tennessee, flows within one hundred yards of the Shelving Rock, on
which
there
has been placed a bronze tablet about two feet square with the
following
inscription:

         First Night's
         Encampment of
          KING'S MOUNTAIN MEN
          SEPTEMBER 26, 1780.
           __________
        They Trusted in God and
        kept Their Powder Dry.
          __________
        Placed by John Sevier Chapter,
        D. A. R., 1910.

A Busy Forge.-- But he was right in stating that a man of the name
of [ John
] Miller
resided at the Shelving Rock and shod their horses, for Squire W. H.
Ollis,
of
Ingalls, N. C., furnished this identical information to the
Historical
Society
of New Jersey in 1872, saying that "Absalom Miller told me that
his father
lived at Shelving Rock in September, 1780, and shod the horses of
some of the
King's Mountain men while they camped under the Shelving Rock."
As most of
Sevier's men were practical blacksmiths, we may well imagine that
Johnson's
forge was a busy place early on the morning of September 27, 1780,
and well
up
into that day, and that, while some were shoeing the horses, others
were busy
at bellows and anvil, hammering out horse shoes and nails, thus
leaving none
of the available tools idle for a moment.

It has been pretty much documented that Thomas and his family moved
to Surry County, North Carolina about 1775. My Aunt Mabel in her
Endecott book stated that no record could be found indicating that
Thomas owned land there. This has now been proven incorrect. The
problem was that the portion of Surry County where Thomas lived (the
Lowgap area)was split off to make Wilkes County in 1777. This is
probably why Mabel could not find Thomas in the Surry County
records. In the Wilkes County 1784 taxlist, Thomas is listed as a
land owner of 100 acres. The following year, he is listed as a land
owner of 350 acres. Therefore, although they probably didn't move,
the
county that they lived changed. Someday, I'll have to search the
Wilkes County land records. After Thomas and his family moved from
North Carolina (about 1786) to Fayette County,Virginia (Kentucky was
not a state yet) in 1792, part of Wilkes County was annexed back to
Surry County. This gave the Lowgap area back to Surry County.
This information came from an article called "THE HISTORT AND
FORMATION OF SURRY COUNTY,NC" which can be found at
http://juliemorrison
.com/surry/history.htm <http://juliemorrison.com/surry/history.htm>
When the Thomas Endecott family moved to what is now Kentucky, they
settled in Fayette County, Virginia. In 1789, Woodford County was
formed from that part of Fayette County where the Thomas Endecott
family lived. Kentucky became a state on 1 June 1792.
Thomas sold his Woodford County property in 1790 and then bought
land
in Bourbon County in 1792 and moved there as did all his children
and
their families. His sons Moses,Aaron and Barzillai were listed on
the
Bourbon County taxlist in 1792. Samuel was listed in 1796 when he
was
21. Joseph was listed in 1797 when he was 21. William was listed in
1799 when he was 21. They all stayed in that general area for
several years.
That is all for now.

All - This is what I have. "Thomas Endicott followed his
children and
grandchildren and moved to Posey County at the age of 80 with a new
wife,
Susannah Turner Young, who he married on 4 October 1814 at the age
of 77.
Together, they had a son, Absolam Turner Endecott (b. 21 November
1815) when
Thomas was 78. Susan was from Virginia and her first husband was
William
Young by which she had one son, William (b. 1810). After her
husband died,
she moved to Kentucky where she married Thomas." (This is from
'The History
of Posey County" Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1886).

Kyle Elwood wrote:

From the Endicott/Mullens/Mikels Genealogy Document-1930s:
The United Stated Census of Poey County, Indiana, for the year
1850, lists Absolam Turner Endicott as 33 years of age, he was
therefore born in 1817 and was ten years of age at the time Thomas
Endicott made his will, and Thomas must have been about eighty years
of age at the time of his son's birth. Land transfers of record in
Harrison County, Kentucky, support the statement made in the will of
Thomas Endicott that his sons by his first marriage (to Sarah Welch)
had received their portion of his estate prior to the date of his
will. It is probable that he gave each of his children their
proportionate share of his holdings preparatory to his marriage to
Susanah Young. Thomas Endicott may have been born subsequent to
1737, as we have no actual record of the date of his birth. Mrs.
Mary Lovering Holman, genealogist of Wathertown, Massachusetts,
having assumed he was born about 1737, after a study of New Jersey
records for 20 or 25 years. Mrs. Holman has been engaged in the
study of the Endicott family history under the direction of Mr.
William Crowninshield Endicott. After the marriage of Thomas
Endicott and Sarah Welch, his name entirely vanishes from the New
Jersey records. He was probably a resident of North Carolina from
that time until 1786, the date of his removal to Kentucky. The
Bible willed to Absolam Turner Endicott, if in existence today,
would undoubtedly give much desired date to descendants. Thomas
Endicott Jr., son of Thomas Sr., and brother of Moses was living in
Harrison Co., Kentucky in 1834, deposition to that effect being on
file with Pension Department, Washington D.C., while Thomas, son of
Samuel Endicott served according to Ferrin's History, as Deputy
Clerk of Harrison County, Kentucky in 1832.

I wanted to make a quick note about the discussion group we
are currently in the midst of. I feel it will be a success on
at least two fronts. 1] the consolidation, enhancement and
accuarcy of information in researchers records and 2] the
growth and involvement of the membership of the list.

Since this discussion was initiated, the membership of the
Endicott genealogy list/forum has grown by 8 members! This
is great. I want to take this moment to welcome all new
members to the list and hope this tool will be valuable in
your pursuits of genealogy knowledge, new cousins and new
friendships.

Dated

Jersey, 20 pounds; to grandson, Joseph Bushop, 10 pounds at
death of Hannah or when 21 years of age. To son, John, all
real estate at mother's death. At mother's death, all moveable
estate divided equally between daughters, Elizabeth and Ann.

father's death. Signed: Joseph Endecott

The will was probated, May 1747.

I, Joseph Endecott of township Northampton and
county of Burlington in West division of Province of New Jersey,

and all my personal estate to be sold and monies arising there
from to be applied to pay my debts, funeral charges and to
perform my agreement made by me with my mother, Hannah Endecott,
and what remains I give the same to my dear and well beloved
wife, Ann Endecott, the better to enable her to bring up my
children and I advise said wife that she put out my children to
trades at suitable age, I having no estate to leave them.

Named wife Ann, Executrix and friend James Wills Executor.
Joseph made his mark, probably too ill to write.

The widowed, Ann Endecott, subsequently married Reuben Eldridge
on April 29, 1751. Documentation apparently existed in 1943 to
show that Ann was living in Juliustown, New Jersey on August 5,
1783 at the age of 68 years.

The family Bible of Joseph and Ann Endecott was, in 1943, in
the possession of Charles Endicott, Indianapolis, Indiana,
formerly if Danville, Illinois. It was published in 1735 at
Edinburg, Scotland. Charles Endicott is a descendant of
Samuel Endecott, third son of Joseph and Ann.

Data copied from this Bible, at Danville, Illinois on October
22, 1933 by Mabel McCloskey: "Thomas Endecott, son of Joseph
and Ann Endecott, was born March 27, 1737." (the horizontal
line at the top of the last 7 not distinct, but under a strong
reading glass was faintly discernable). All data copied.

The Bible also recorded the names of Joseph, Samuel, Barzillai
and Sarah.

I. THOMAS ENDECOTT was born March 27, 1737
II. Joseph Endecott was born June 8, 1738
III. Samuel Endecott was born February 5, 1741/1742
IV. Barzillai Endecott was born March 20, 1743/1743
V. Sarah Endecott was born December 6, 1744
VI. Prazillia Endecott was born December 9, 1746

I. THOMAS ENDECOTT (Sr) was a farmer. May have been a carpenter
too. Born March 27, 1737 near Mt Holly, Burlington county, New
Jersey and died January 22, 1831 in farm house in Smith township,
Posey county, Indiana about one and one-half miles south of
Cynthiana, Posey county, Indiana [source 1]. He was buried in
Smith Township, Posey county, Indiana [source 1]. He married
Sarah Welsh on June 19, 1759 in Burlington county, New Jersey
[New Jersey Archives I Ser. Vol. 22, New Jersey Marriages] and
lived near long bridge, Mt Holly, New Jersey (Here Moses, Joseph
and Aaron were born) [source 1]. THOMAS lived near Mt Holly,
New Jersey in 1763 (New Jersey Archives I Ser. Vol. 24, Newspaper
Ads). Shortly afterward, the trek southward began. It seems
probable that sometime was spent in Viginia, however, by 1775 the
Endecotts had settled in Surry county, North Carolina near the
Virginia border in the vacinity of Low Gap. Near Low Gap is a
stream called Endicott Creek which flows past the old home of
Governor Franklin of Revolutionary War fame [source 1]. Since
there is no court record that THOMAS, Sr. owned land in North
Carolina, it seems likely that he followed some occupation other
than farming. Sarah died between 1790 and 1799 in Kentucky.

"It has been documented that Thomas and his family moved to
Surry county, North Carolina about 1775. My Aunt Mabel, in her
Endecott book, stated that no record could be found indicating
that Thomas owned land there. This has now been proven incorrect.
The problem was that the portion of Surry County where Thomas
lived (the Lowgap area) was split off to make Wilkes County in
1777. This is probably why Mabel could not find Thomas in the
Surry county records. In the Wilkes County 1784 taxlist, Thomas
is listed as a land owner of 100 acres. The following year, he
is listed as a land owner of 350 acres. Therefore, although they
probably didn't move, the county in which they lived changed.
Someday, I'll have to search the Wilkes County land records.
After Thomas and his family moved from North Carolina (about 1786)
to Fayette county, Virginia (Kentucky was not a state yet) in
1792, part of Wilkes County was annexed back to Surry county.
This gave the Lowgap area back to Surry County. This information
came from an article called "THE HISTORY AND FORMATION OF SURRY
COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA" which can be found at:

http://juliemorrison.com/surry/history.htm

When the Thomas Endecott family moved to what is now Kentucky, they
settled in Fayette county, Virginia. In 1789, Woodford County was
formed from that part of Fayette County where the Thomas Endecott
family lived. Thomas sold his 100 acres of property on Greer's
Creek in Woodford county, Virginia on February 2, 1790 (Woodford
county Book A page 62) and then bought land in Bourbon county in
1792 and moved there as did all his children and their families.
Kentucky became a state on June 1, 1792. His sons Moses, Aaron and
Barzillai were listed on the Bourbon county taxlist in 1792.
Between 1792 and 1799, Thomas is listed on Bourbon county, Kentucky

tax lists (see http://www.shawhan.com/taxlist.html). Samuel was
listed on tax list in 1796 when he was 21 years of age. Joseph was
listed in 1797 when he was 21. William was listed in 1799 when he
was 21. They all stayed in that general area for several
years."

War. He may have lived in Virginia before going to North Carolina.,
Welmet Endecott, widow of Moses, stated on September 20, 1855 that
the Endecotts formerly lived in the the "eastern part of Old
Virginia"...as per the pension papers, page 21. They then came to
Kentucky in 1786...as per pension paper pages 7 and 8. Moses
pension papers, number 26645, from Kentucky; 25 pages.

The Moses pension papers on page 8 quote: "that he (Thomas,
Sr's son, Thomas, Jr), with all his family, left Carolina about the
year 1786 and settled in Kentucky where the family now resides...

some in Bourbon county and others in Harrison county, close
together." Sworn to on September 14, 1832 by Thomas Endecott,
Jr. in Harrison county, Kentucky.

From Land Transactions section Mabel's book, et al: Land
transactions of THOMAS ENDECOTT, Sr. include:

THOMAS Sr. owned 100 acres in Wilkes county, North Carolina in
1784 [Wilkes county, North Carolina 1784 taxlist].

THOMAS Sr. owned 350 acres in Wiles county, North Carolina in
1785 [Wilkes county, North Carolina 1785 tax list].

April 1789, Edward and Sarah Mitchell, county of Fayette, State
of Virginia to THOMAS INDICUTT, county of Fayette, Virginia, 100
acres on Greer's Creek in Woodford county, State of Virginia,
for 60 Pounds. Witnesses, Barzillai Endecott, Aaron Endecott,
John Bailey. Recorded September 2, 1789, Book A. page 10 by
Cave Johnson, Clerk. From the 'Proof of Descent' section of
Mabel's book it is stated as Kentucky instead. These counties
are currently in Kentucky. Does anyone know what the status of
this area was during the transaction time period?

Virginia, to Henry Shous, 100 acres between Clear Creek and
Greer Creek for 100 Pounds. February 2, 1790. Signed, THOMAS

October 7, 1792, THOMAS ENDECOTT of Bourbon county, Kentucky
bought from Richard Young and wife Mary, of Woodford county,
Kentucky, 192 acres on Indian Creek in Bourbon county,
Kentucky for 70 Pounds (Bourbon county, Kentucky tax records).

August 17, 1798, James Scearce and Henrietta to THOMAS ENDECOTT

From: "Into This Fruitful Valley" by Gloria M. Cox and
Carroll o. Cox. Revised edition, 1980 by McDowell Publications,
Owensboro, Kentucky.

THE BIG MOVE

Into this fruitful valley they had come. This mecca for those
seeking all kinds of freedom. George Rapp had sought it as
early as 1804 for his flock but didn't make the move until 1814.
Jonathan Jaquess had entered land as early as 1811. The
Rappittes had sought it as a place to live and escape religious
bigots. William Casey, Jonathan Jaquess, and other men for
economic reasons. Kentucky land titles frequently meant trouble.
Then too the United States Government gave land grants to many of
its soldiers for Revolutionary services. Jonathan Jaquess was
one of these.

Elizabeth Fraizer Casey's poor health and Indian raids kept the
families of the three Fraizer sisters in the Blue Grass region of
Kentucky until September 1, 1815. From then until 1820 at least
200 people from that area in Kentucky made the journey into this
fruitful valley. A few had come prior to the September group to
start preparing the way for the big move. The families of the
three Fraizer sisters started as early as 1811 to make the
necessary preparations for new homes. All were approaching age
and only two lived to make the journey to Indiana. Before her
death, which apparently occurred shortly after the birth of her
daughter Lucinda, Elizabeth Fraizer Casey made her husband
William promise to lead the group just as they had planned.
There were plenty of older children to look after the younger
ones.

Now this was no ordinary group of settlers. William Casey Sr.
had sold his land in Kentucky for $10,000. CASH! Jonathan
Jaquess had 1200 acres of good ground. Alexander Ferguson was
the school teacher. Their sons all had college educations.
Their daughters had married well. Stephen Eaton also was a
school teacher. Joseph Endicott the husband of Rebecca Casey
was an industrious young farmer. Joel Casey was studying to be
a doctor. James Rankin and Willian Casey, Jr. were reading law.
Jonathan Jaquess was the spiritual leader. William Casey, Sr.
was a musician. He insisted his daughters take dancing lessons.

Seldom has any county received two such settlements as Posey
County did. The 1815 Jaquess-Casey-Fraizer settlement and more
than a decade later the "Boatload of Knowledge" at Harmony.
Both had floated down into this fruitful valley on the Ohio [river].

In March of 1817 another group of equal or greater number came
from the Blue Grass region into this valley. This group again
centered around sisters. The Journey girls of French Hugenot
stock. William Davis laid out Cynthiana, Indiana in the same
manner of Cynthiana, Kentucky. His son John had married Nellie
Journey. Hannah Journey had married James Nesbit and they came
with their small children. James Nesbit was a farmer and
tanner by trade and was a staunch Methodist. Ralph Martin and
his new bride Audra Journey were included. Also coming were
Ruben Garten and Mary Journey and their two small sons. Family
tradition says that the mother of the Journey girls, Margaret
McGhee Journey also came to Indiana.

Before 1819 old Thomas Endicott brought his new bride Susan
Turner Young and her sons to a new home in Indiana. About this
same time his son Aaron Endicott and his family and his widowed
daughter Nancy Forrest with her small children also came to
northern Posey County.

The Eatons, Lowes, Estis, and Thomas Blackburn also began
appearing in Posey County court records by 1820. By 1830 more
Endicotts, Finch's, Clevelands had made the big move.

This fruitful valley was good to her children and they likewise
returned to it long and faithful service. From the first group
came Pamela Jaquess (same records say Permelia) who stood by
her husband John Schrader as he helped spread God's word
throughout the valley. William Casey Sr. served in numerous
public offices. Thomas Blackburn practiced law. William Casey
Jr. served in the state legislature as did James Casey Endicott.
Moses Endicott served as a county commissioner and an early
trustee. Joel Casey was a doctor and the first store outside
of New Harmony was run by a Jaquess boy who went to Henderson
and bought his goods from Audubon. Some of the other Jaquess
boys were preachers. James Casey helped found a town. Stephen
Eaton taught school as did Alexander Ferguson and his sons James
and Asberry. Elizabeth Ferguson married John Cooper an early
teacher and large land owner. James Rankin was an early judge
of Posey County. The second group produced Alfred Berry Nesbit
an early preacher. James Nesbit helped start a church. Ellison
Cahill (Cale) was a land developer. The Whitting brothers were
school teachers. Samuel Endicott was a doctor.

By 1850 everyone was related to one another one way or another.
Patrick Calvert had foru Endicott and one Casey in-laws. Three
Endicotts, brother, sister, and uncle had married a Nesbit. The
confusion had continued until at present time three out of four
persons living in eastern Robb, Smith Township and to some
degree northern Vanderburgh County have at least one common
ancestor and frequently three or four.

Even to the present time it is evident that the descendants of
those early settlers in this fruitful valley are returning part
of the goodness of it to it. There is an astounding number of
descendants who are educators, doctors, lawyers, judges, army
officers, preachers. A recent study shows very few drop outs
from society. Most of these descendants still consider duty to
ones God and country first. These are indeed comforting facts
in these troubled times.

May the seeds planted so long ago by those first settlers in
"This Fruitful Valley" continue to produce forever good fruit.

-----------------------------

From Endicott/Mullen/Mikels Genealogy Document, 1930s (contributed
by Mary Emily [Mullen] Hensley, descendant of Sarah [Endicott]
Mullen):

Moses Endicott was born near Mt Holly, Burlington County, New
Jersey, in October 1759. An affadavit made by him in March 1833,
Harrison County, Kentucky, states the record is an old family
Bible now in my (????) possession. Other sources: Moses pension
papers and source-1.

He applied for pension March 12, 1833.

From Endicott/Mullen/Mikels Genealogy Document, 1930s
(contributed by Mary Emily [Mullen] Hensley, descendant of
Sarah [Endicott] Mullen):

Mrs. Mary E. HENSLEY, El Renao,
Oklahoma, states that he died suddenly, having suffered a stroke
of apoplexy {note: currently termed a stroke syndrome or
cerebrovascular accident or CVA}.

Michael, thanks for the information you sent from page 1 of the
Endicott - Mullen Genealogical Book, which indicated that Sarah
Endicott married William Mullen in 1806. That gave me a starting
place. I have found that the parents of William Mullen are
Thomas Mullen, b. abt 1739 and Elizabeth Garrett. Thomas
assisted in establishing American Independence while acting
in the capacity of CAPT. , New Kent Co., VA Militia. 1770 (Reg
at DAR) Thomas and Elizabeth had 4 children: John, Selvan,
Thomas , and William (J.), Sr. . b. 15 June 1781 in Louden,

Hill; They were married 4 Oct 1805 in Bouirbon, KY: They had 7
children, 6 born in Ky, and one in IN.

only documentation I have found is in my cousin, Teddy
Sanford's "The History of the Endicott Family". To take some
of the burdon off Ted's shoulders, it is something that I have
committed to memory throughout the last 2 years of sporadic
research of my Endicott family...that means I have seen her
name in print as 'Gosling' often enough that my middle aged
brain managed to retain it. I realize this is not proof of any
kind, but for many of you our there in the 50-something age
group, its definitely worth noting. I have a suggestion for
the next subject:

Being from the Joseph/Moses/Welmette Nation Endicott line, can
anyone clear that up for me, with names and dates, as well as
who was born to whom? My ggGrandmother was Welmette Nation
Endicott Kight, daughter of Joseph Nation Endicott - son of

father, Joseph Endicott abt. 1792. Happy Spring, everyone!!

Hi Endicott cousins...
Has anyone ever checked out the "Kight Digest and List
etc? Given the fact that there were 3 or more marriages between
the two families in Posey County alone (Emily Endicott& Stephen
Kight) (Ezekiel Kight Jr. and Amanda Endicott) (William Franklin
Endicott and Rosanna Kight) (William Thomas Kight and Welmette
Nation Endicott), and many groups from both families migrated to,
and settled in Coos County, Oregon, gives these two families much
in common and seemingly, much to share. Are there any rules
against such collaberations? Have we all traded info through
private contacts with one another? Do you realize how many
Endicotts are at a Kight reunion and vice-versa?

Just a thought...

From "Into This Fruitful Valley," by Gloria M. Cox and
Carroll O.
Cox, 1980 Revised Edition, page 149:

"Much has been written on the early Endicott's so that this book
makes no attempt to do a genealogy other than the ones who
settled in Southern Indiana and Illinois. Historians and
genealogists differ on the ancestor of Joseph Nation Endicott and
his brothers and sisters.

This author, using her own research records and the writings of
Miss Mabel McGlaughin published in the Indiana Magazine of History
as proof, believes the father of Joseph Nation Endicott to be
Joseph Endicott, the son of Thomas Endicott and the brother of
Moses Endicott.

Mable McCloskey in her book "Some Descendants of John Endicott,
Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony" contends that the father
of Joseph Nation Endicott was the brother of Thomas Endicott.
Joseph Endicott, the son of Thomas Endicott, married Wilmot
Phillips. After the death of Joseph Endicott, his widow married
Moses Endicott, his brother. Moses Endicott died shortly after
his marriage and in 1850, Wilmot Phillips Endicott was living in
Harmony Township, Posey County, Indiana.

Thomas Endicott was born in 1735 in New Jersey and died in Posey
County, Indiana in 1831. He married twice; first to Sarah Welsh
in New Jersey and second to Susan Turner Young in 1815 in
Harrison County, Kentucky. Since, according to Mrs. McCloskey's
records, Joseph Endicott the brother of Thomas was born in 1738,
and Wilmot, the mother of Joseph Nation, was born in the 1770s
there seems to be a huge age difference. Joseph Endicott, the
son of Thomas, was born about 1761. Therefore, this author
believes that the Endicotts in Posey County were all descendants
of Thomas Endicott, Sr."

Kyle - Mabel sometimes made mistakes. I am from the line of
Joseph Endicott (1761-1827) and he did not marry Welmot. She
married Joseph Endicott (1770-1833), the eldest son of Joseph
Endicott (1738-1831), the brother of Thomas Endicott (1737-1831).
It is tough with so many Joseph's around. My Joseph (1761-1827)
married Nancy Faubion in 1786 and they had eight children. They
never left Kentucky with the rest of the Endicotts in the early
1800s.

Josephs mentioned below. Therefore, I did not include the below in

Joseph's attempting to sort thru them. I am a descendant of 5
consecutive Josephs which made it very difficult for me to sort out.
My conclusions are shown in The Endicott Family History, 2002...

A number of sources and reference material have been researched to
determine and compare what others have distinguished between Joseph
Endecott b: 1738 in Mt. Holly, Burlington Co., New Jersey and Joseph
Endecott b: 1775 in North Carolina. For comparisons, this author is

don't think that Joseph (1775) has any part in this drama other than
his middle name was "Nation" after his mom."

married abt 1792 to Welmet Nation. pp 185-186

Source 9. Gloria M. Cox in her "Into this Fruitful Valley"
states " this author, using her own research records and the

1761."

Source 12. In an email from Ted Sanford April 27, 2002, he states,
"Mabel made some mistakes. I am from the line of Joseph Endicott
(1761-1827) and he did not marry Welmot. She married Joseph Endicott
(1770-1833), the eldest son of Joseph Endicott (1738-1831), the

Josephs around. My Joseph (1761-1827) married Nancy Faubion in 1786
and they had eight children. They never left Kentucky with the rest
of the Endicotts in the early 1800s.

Since Joseph became a Quaker when he married Hannah Gossling in
1706, and one of their children, John, married Mary Gossling in 1728,
would there be a possibility of church records for either marriage,
or of Joseph's Baptism into the Quaker religion still in existance?
(Must have thrilled Governor John!)

Subject: Thomas Endecott- move from North Carolina to Kentucky
<http://homepages.rootsweb.com/%7Escismfam/endicott/archives/2877>

In 1786, Thomas Endecott and his family left North Carolina and
followed the Wilderness Trail through the Cumberland Gap and settled
in Fayette County, Virginia in what is now Kentucky. In 1789, that
part of Fayette County was split off to form Woodford County,
Virginia. In April 1789, Thomas bought 100 acres in Woodford County
described as lying on Greers Creek. On February 2, 1790, Thomas and
Sarah sold 100 acres, described as land between Clear Creek and
Greers Creek. Referring to page 37 of "DeLorme's Kentucky Atlas
and Gazetteer", Grier's Creek is located a few miles south of
Versailles, Kentucky. Clear Creek is also shown nearby. This the
area that Thomas and his family lived before they moved about 35 miles
northeast to Bourbon County where on 7 October 1792, Thomas bought
192 acres on Indian Creek located northeast of Cynthiana, Kentucky.
Kentucky became a state in 1792.

Kyle-

There is a lot of good information about Thomas on pages 40-42 of
Gordon's book that was taken from Ted Sanford's "The History of
the Endicott Family" that could supplement the data that you
already have. I particularly like the way Ted pinpointed the
location of Endicott Creek in the Lowgap area of North Carolina.

Wanda, are you on this list too?

I am always on the lookout for information about the elusive Welmet! If
Nation was her name from a previous marriage - and her true maiden name was
Phillips - that could be the reason we haven't been able to find her
anywhere as child named Welmet Nation, or a father for her.

One of my sources for Welmet Nation is the Endicott Genealogy equalivant of
the Gospel - Mabel McFatridge McCloskey's, Some Descendants of John Endecott
Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony.

I also have a copy of the Endicott/Nation marriage certificate - I will
attach it, but if it doesn't come through, will someone please let me know.
(Along with a suggestion of how to sent it along in a better way.)

However, there are some problems with this theory.

"...Wilmet Phillips might be the same one listed in the 1840 Warrick Co, IN
census in Ohio Twp and possibly the widow of James Phillips who was in Ohio
Twp, Warrick Co 1830. (Wilmet probably his 2nd wife)"

Welmet Nation married Joseph Endicott in 1792. Joseph died in 1833 and soon
afterward she married Joseph's cousin Moses Endicott. Moses Endicott died a
month or so after they married, in 1833. I suppose that she could have
married a third time to James Phillips after Moses' death, but she was in
her 60's in 1833, so that doesn't work out that she could be Wilmet
Phillips, 45 years old.

"In hh#154/154 (4 doors away) is Wilmet Phillips age 45 with Amanda 18,
George 15 and James 12. "

What year is this hh#154/154 census record from? Even though the names are
the same for Wilmet and Amanda, I don't think the ages fit for Welmet Nation
Endicott and her daughter Amanda Endicott.

Also the children of Welmet are:

William Harrison Endicott - b 1791

Joseph Nation Endicott - b 1795

John B. Endicott - b. 1797

Mary (Polly) Endicott - b 1799

Eliza Jane Endicott - b 1801

Samuel Endicott - b 1803

Emily Endicott - b 1808

Amanda Endicott - b 1812

Maria Endicott - b 1815

Elizabeth Endicott - b 1817

America Endicott - b 1818

No son George

No son James

Any thoughts or ideas about this?

Hi Sandra,

I am a little confused by this information. I am assuming these
individuals are connected
and progress backward, one generation at a time from son to father? (I
have edited it
accordingly, below so let me know if I am incorrect). If so, there
seems to be a
generation or so missing, between your father, Emmet Clinton, and the
next person
listed. Please clarify, thanks. (I edited what you sent as shown below.
  Is this correct?),
Our lines intersect at Moses Endicott (October 1759). Moses had a son ,
James
Harrison Endicott, b. January 29, 1794, brother of your, Jesse James
Endicott,
born 7-6-1785, whom I am a descendant of.

I would be interested in getting as much detail about your line as you
are willing to
share...and will do likewise (when my computer database is restored) if
you are
interested.

you live in? We live out past Battlecreek Golf course in south Salem).
